This account will find its settlement when these amounts, as is currently understood, are credited upon the first departing invoice to Batavia, in order to be cleared there with the permission of Their High Excellencies to the sequestrator; notwithstanding this account has since found its settlement through the collection and receipt of merchandise; these, along with the said negotiated moneys, can shortly be repaid out of the merchandise now received, as well as the adjacent ones, which shall also be paid first. 339. The 24th of December 1787. Thus disposed and placed in the margin on the day. Kuper requests to be readmitted into the service. Honourable, in the secret letter dated the 23rd of August Anno 1785, granted and calculated on each article of merchandise, in so far as the same during the course of trade, the month and year aforesaid, the books of the Honourable 1786/7, were sold, collected, transferred, and largely paid. Awaiting Your Honourable Worships' respected dispositions, I remain with the most complete reverence and high esteem, underneath stood, Right Honourable Worshipful Sir and Gentlemen, lower, Your Honourable Worships' very obedient servant, was signed, M:s Monté, in the middle, Souratta the 20th of December 1787. Was read the following petition of the former assistant Iohannes Kuper, containing the request that, for the reasons cited therein, he may be permitted to perform his service again until such time as he shall have had the opportunity to address Their High Noble Honours with a concurrently submitted petition to obtain forgiveness for his committed misstep and readmission into the service. To the Right Honourable Worshipful Sir Abraham Iosias Sluijsken, Director and Chief Commander of this Directorate, alongside the Council. Right Honourable Worshipful Sir and Gentlemen. Respectfully makes known Iohannes Kuper of Steenwijk, who arrived in India Anno 1773 as gunner's mate per the Honourable Company's ship Hoogkarspel 340 The 24th of December 1787. Which was so far granted to him, to perform service at one of the offices for the ordinary board allowance. To present his petition to Their High Noble Honours. Hoogkarspel of Enkhuijsen, and since in Anno 1777 was promoted to assistant at f 24.-.-; that through a concurrence of sorrow and adversities he suffered the misfortune of being removed from this Directorate shortly before the outbreak of the war in 1781, and ended up deep inland, such that notwithstanding his desire and longing to return to the same upon its restoration, it was impossible for him to do so, because he was detained by the natives from time to time and prevented from returning hither, but now having had the opportunity to do so, he takes the liberty to request Your Honourable Worships to permit him to perform his service as assistant again until such time as he shall have had the opportunity to address Their High Noble Honours, as he requests he may be permitted, in order to obtain from Their Highest Goodness forgiveness and reinstatement in the service, which generosity he will not fail to make himself worthy of through diligence and good conduct, underneath stood, Doing which, etcetera, in the margin, Souratta the 18th of December 1787. Whereupon having been deliberated, it was approved and understood to grant the petitioner's request, and to let him perform service at one of the offices for the receipt of the ordinary clerks' board allowance, in the meantime while his aforementioned petition shall be presented to the High Mentioned Their High Noble Honours with the letter now about to be dispatched, with the request to cast a favourable regard upon it, since his committed misstep did not occur out of any committed malversations and to evade punishment, and 341.
