And in conformity with the weighing memo received from Batavia, the same chests were weighed out there to the ship's authorities at gross: lb. 1223. Hence a gross underweight of 6 1/4 percent or: lb. 76. Anno 1788, the 5th of January Finding on the delivered cargo of the Honorable Company's ship De Geregtigheid, as follows: By the Junior Merchant and Warehouse Master Egbert Nicolaas Wiardi, the merchandise, gift goods, haberdashery, writing materials, and other items listed per invoice of this vessel were received in the following manner: Opened and unpacked today and found in accordance with the packing slip enclosed therein and the items listed in the invoice, except: Large-format Dutch paper entered as: 4 reams or 80 quires. Received usable: 20 quires. Received unusable: 60 quires. Total: 80 quires. Large-format French paper entered as: 1 ream. Received unusable: 1/2 ream. Short: 1/2 ream. Respectful reply to the juxtaposed finding by the undersigned, namely: This French paper is fully as large as imperial paper. For Dutch paper, when issued and unpacked, one sheet of French is calculated against two sheets of large-format Dutch; and regarding the quality or defect, and whence the latter arose, I cannot fathom, since the crate in which the paper was unpacked was found well conditioned. It was approved 20 The 5th of January Anno 1788: Both ships are unloaded. if the Geregtigheid were detained a month longer one might perhaps have been able to fulfill the Indian Demand sufficiently. to make all possible haste to load the said ships. further, the sailing day fixed for the 10th of this month. approved and resolved to offer the same to Their High Excellencies, and moreover most urgently to request of the same that it may be sent both in quantity and quality. Taking into consideration that both ships Alblasserdam and De Geregtigheid, now unloaded, are in a condition to receive cargo again, and that, in view of the circumstances of the times and the ever-increasing rumors of war, it does not seem advisable to deviate in the slightest from Their High Excellencies' order, according to which the aforesaid both ships must depart together again in order to remain combined until Cape Comorin, notwithstanding that, according to the assurance of the Linen Suppliers, by detaining one of them for the period of only One Month, one would be enabled to fulfill the Demand for the Indies fairly completely, which, due to a lack of money caused by the non-sale of the Cloves and the late arrival of the ships, has hitherto been impossible, it was thus approved and resolved to make all possible haste with the reloading of the same with what is now ready and can still be procured, and to fix the sailing day for the same on the 10th of this month, in the hope that that time will be sufficient to get the bales 21. 27. The 26th of January Anno 1788. His Honour gives notice that no one undertakes to repair the water tank for less than 900 rupees. The Director, having informed the meeting how His Honour, pursuant to the resolution of the 11th of August last, having made inquiries both with the Modi and with the equipage overseer Masser regarding the cost for which they would undertake to make the water tank under the house of the aforementioned equipage overseer completely watertight and to repair it, on condition that if any defects should again be found in it within the period of the first three following years, or if it did not remain watertight, they will have to repair it again at their expense, had found that these people would undertake the said work for nothing less than 900 rupees, giving as reason that it is impossible to make the cracked wall watertight in such a manner that it does not let water through, but that it would be necessary to build a new wall two feet thick around the entire tank and provide it with a new layer of plaster; consequently proposing to the meeting to appoint and authorize a committee from among its members to have the frequently mentioned tank accurately 28. The 26th of January Anno 1788. examined after a prior exact investigation by the master masons into the substantial defects of the same, Hinder promoted to Bookkeeper. Piper and Roeff appointed to this tender. and thereafter to contract out the repairing and making watertight of the same to the lowest bidder; whereupon, deliberation having taken place, it was approved to embrace the aforementioned proposition of the Director, and to appoint to this committee the members of this meeting Piper and Roeff. Regarding Godfried Hinder, who was promoted on the 5th of December 1784 from Corporal to Junior Assistant at the wage of 16 guilders and a contract of 3 years, it was approved, in view of the expiration of his aforementioned contract, to promote him to Bookkeeper at 30 guilders and a new contract of 3 years, and this out of consideration that the aforementioned Hinder gives complete satisfaction in the duties, first of second and now of first clerk at the warehouses, which he has respectively served since the re-establishment of the Directorate, and that, as this post has always been given to a Bookkeeper, it also now seems necessary, especially since the warehouse master has already been indisposed for more than a year and suffers from a great weakness which renders him almost completely incapable of concerning himself much with his duties, to thereby give the first servant under him in the aforementioned trade warehouses somewhat more 29. 31. The 4th of February Anno 1788: thereof, to contract out to the lowest bidder, served the following written Report. To the Honorable Respected Sir Abraham Josias Sluijsken Director and Chief Commander of this Directorate Together with The Council. Honorable Respected Sir and Gentlemen! In compliance with the Political Council resolution taken by Your Honors on the 26th of this month, the undersigned, as specially appointed commissioners, assisted by two native master masons, went to the residence of the sub-lieutenant and equipage master Masser and there inspected the defects of the large water well or rather cistern, 16 feet long, 18 feet wide, and 24 feet deep, beneath the residence of the aforesaid servant, serving for the conservation of rainwater and to always be provided with water in the shipyard in case of need or danger, which, according to the Resolution of the 9th of May 1785, was contracted by the late Captain Lieutenant and equipage master Jan Lotsz to renew, build up with masonry, plaster, and make watertight again for a sum of six hundred rupees, on condition that he would be answerable for all defects and repairs that might occur or be necessary thereto in the first five years after its renewal, and upon completion the said sum was also, pursuant to the resolution of the 10th of June of the said year, paid from the treasury to the equipage master Lotsz. After a careful inspection was carried out by the said master masons, we asked each of them separately to what extent the best possible and least expensive remedies should be effected thereto. The 4th of February Anno 1788: The master standing under English protection declared thereupon that he could accomplish this in no other way than by chipping off and entirely removing the old plasterwork, likewise raising it on all four sides with a wall of two feet in thickness, as well as breaking up the foundation by one foot and sealing it again to an equal height of one foot. Which the second master mason, who has already for many years performed the work of the Honorable Company, likewise declared he could do in no other way. We have the honor most humbly to inform Your Honors that the difference between these two master masons consists merely in this: that the first-mentioned would not accept the repair thereof for less than a sum of nine hundred rupees, without wishing to bind himself in any way whatsoever after the completion of the work for any subsequent defects that might arise. In contrast, the second master mason demanded a sum of nine hundred twenty-five rupees, under these conditions: that he shall be answerable for all defects and repairs that might occur thereto in the first three to four years after its renewal. For the rest, we have entered into no agreement whatsoever with the said master masons. However, since the equipage master Masser has offered to perform the repair of the said cistern for the sum of four hundred rupees, and that he was willing to bind himself to be answerable for its defects and maintaining it watertight in the first three to four years, we therefore take the liberty to inform Your Honors of this and leave its contracting to Your Honors. We hope to have complied with the honored intentions of Your Honors, while we take the liberty to sign ourselves with deep respect.
