It is approved to send the 50 Lasts of wheat per Vreedenburg. damaged sugar, have increased by as much as ƒ1208:9:8, above those which arise from the household etc. having amounted to ƒ63408:2:8, so that this office, notwithstanding all the aforementioned disadvantages, has still yielded a profit to the Company of ƒ290980:6. Further, as the aforementioned trading journals are now on the point of closing, the members of this assembly, Wiardi and Pepere, are commissioned to inspect the same. Hereafter, the Director submitted a letter received by His Honour the day before yesterday from the Ceylon Ministers, dated the 28th of October last, containing a request, firstly, to provide them at the first opportunity with fifty Lasts of Surat wheat, and secondly, to have the ships returning from here call at Cochim in order to take in the rice procured there for Ceylon and convey it to Gale, with the exception, however, of the ship that brought the returns for the fatherland. Whereupon, deliberation having been held, it was first approved to send the requested 50 Lasts of wheat per the ship Vreedenburg, and subsequently it was taken into consideration to what extent 183 The 5th of December, Anno 1789. Yet the second request, for the reasons mentioned herein, is excused. To persist with the resolution of the 27th of October last. to discharge quickly when it appears and to to what extent one would and could comply with the aforementioned second request, as the ship Berkhout, if one manages to dispatch the entire demand for the Indies, as the assembly will leave nothing untried thereto, will be laden with over seven hundred packages and bales belonging to the Company, and then additionally with 3 to 400 packages of private individuals on freight, and will therefore have no room left for the conveyance of any noteworthy quantity of rice, besides the fact that the ship itself would become far too burdened by this upper cargo, while above all this the assembly fears that it might be taken very ill by Their High Honours that, outside of the utmost necessity, a ship carrying a value of three tons of gold was employed for the conveyance of a trifling quantity of rice from one place to another; it was approved and agreed to persist with the resolution of this assembly of the 27th of October last, and to dispatch the ship Berkhout directly to the capital without letting it touch at any places, but on the other hand, to discharge the ship De Schelde quickly when it appears, and to send it to Cochim, 184 The 5th of December, Anno 1789.
