Wednesday the 21st of April 1790. The captain of the Demerarij requested to hand over private money for Soeratte here to be used for the Company. Wednesday the 21st of April 1790 Aboard the ship Demerarij bound for Souratten, the following is to be shipped further, namely: from the west side 650 lb medium and lean Nutmegs, sprinkled with a portion as much as will be needed, as requested for this keel on the 22nd of June last 8500 lb Cloves in good, well-dried wooden chests. 3 soculs Mace, Rape or 2nd sort, and only in default thereof small or 1st sort. Underneath was written: Batavia the 1st of August 1789. Signed: P: H: de Haart A request having been made by the captain of the ship Demerarij, Jan Paardekooper, that a small chest with cash marked SA, which was given to him in Batavia for delivery to Soeratte, might be taken into the Company's treasury and sent with the open shipping thither to Director Sluisken, it was thereupon taken into consideration that one cannot burden oneself with the risk of sending it from here on private vessels, that the Company in the present circumstances has very urgent need of that money here, and consequently it was approved and agreed to accept that money here on account of the Company and to respectfully request the High Indian Government to have the amount thereof paid out in Soeratte; as well as to insert here the written report of the Honorable Chief Administrator van Spall, who had the aforementioned opened and received by judicial members, and a calculation of its value according to the local exchange rate, showing that the same amounts in total to 21559 rupees. Resolution to accept that money and use it for the Company. The undersigned Chief Administrator has, by the highly esteemed order of the Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed Johan Gerard van Angelbeek, Ordinary Councilor of the Dutch Indies, Governor and Director of this Government, received into the Company's great cash treasury, in the presence of two specially appointed members from the Council of Policy, the junior merchant and provisioner Willem van Haeften and the provisional junior merchant and pay bookkeeper Jakobus Adrianus Eversdijck, and in the presence of the sea captain Jan Paardekooper, commanding the Company's ship Demerarij, a small chest nailed shut and bound with rope, sealed in four places and marked SA, wherein we found the following: 1 bag containing one thousand Dutch Ducats 1 ditto ditto one thousand ditto ditto 1 ditto ditto three hundred and ten ditto ditto 1 ditto containing one hundred and four gold Persian coins or whole Rupees 1 ditto ditto two hundred sixty-two, as above, quarter Rupees 1 bag containing sixteen whole and six hundred eighty-eight half silver Ducatoons 1 ditto containing six hundred whole silver Ducatoons 1 ditto containing three hundred twenty whole and sixteen half silver Imperial Dollars 1 ditto containing two thousand silver Surat Rupees 1 ditto containing two thousand ditto ditto 1 ditto containing one thousand seven hundred and six silver Surat Rupees Of which, at the request of the above-mentioned captain, this certificate was delivered to him. Since the military Lieutenant Jean Louis Chateigner de Paradis, who, according to a secret resolution of the 11th of April 1782, was engaged by the Company to serve in that capacity during the war, departed last spring for the French Island and has remained there; it was, in consideration of the fact that he is not carried on the pay books but is only paid out of the treasury, approved and agreed to order on the instruction that he shall henceforth no longer be listed on the short troop strengths. The servants at Koilang having indicated by letter of the 7th instant that, for the clearing of the weeds on the rampart of the fortress and outside the same, in addition to the annually fixed 144 coolies, they had to employ another 412 coolies, because it had not been cleaned there for several consecutive years; it was, since the Governor declared that during His Honour's presence there in the month of October 1788 he had seen for himself that it was overgrown with weeds very heavily everywhere, approved and agreed to authorize the servants to enter the daily wages of 412 coolies, with the recommendation, however, to ensure that henceforth the fort be kept clean both inside and out. The report having been received which the commanders of the Militia and Artillery, according to the resolution of the 10th of August 1785, must submit monthly concerning the condition of the outer works of this city, it was agreed to insert the same below. The undersigned have the honor to report to your Right Honorable, Severe, Highly Esteemed that in the outer works the palisades are all properly greased, and that they are still busy deepening the outer ditch; for the rest, all is well. We have the honor to name ourselves with the dutiful highest respect, below stood: Right Honorable, Severe, Highly Esteemed, High Commanding Lord, your Right Honorable, Severe, Highly Esteemed very humble and obedient servants, was signed: G: G: Gebhardt and T: C: Heupner. The report having been received from the judicial members who, pursuant to the resolution of the 23rd of March last, in the presence of the Fiscal, saw an unserviceable towing rope from the ship Vreedenburg chopped to pieces, it is approved and understood to insert that report hereunder. Containing a request that he may be credited here for the rations found to be short and also spoiled, as appears from the annexed declaration, which records only shortages due to spoilage. The Honorable Company indeed allows specified write-offs upon the transport of those items, but not on rations, which ought to be placed by the ship's officers in such a manner that one can inspect them daily in fair weather in order to decant them into other casks or repack them if necessary upon noticing leakage. Secondly, the deficits on these rations surpass by far the specified percentage allowed on such goods during transport, which then have their place in the hold where one cannot reach them so easily. It does not appear here that such extra provisions are credited to the ship's officers for the sick, and it is certain that if this were done at the Capital, it would either have been delivered to them or mentioned in their instructions. Secondly, the rations of the sick continue to run, who cannot all make use of them, and thus what is needed can very easily be obtained therefrom. The expense account shows that for diverse medicines and surgeon's tools delivered from the dispensary there to the Chief Surgeon of that vessel, namely: For medicines . . . ƒ329. 11. In the expense account of Batavia, a charge is entered for what was delivered to the Military Lieutenant Louis van Manderen as extra provisions for Cochin: 8 cans, sea wine 1 ditto olive oil 3 cans, Dutch vinegar 13 lb ditto butter 12½ lb salted fish 6 lb wax candles.
