The inland offices provide nothing unusual regarding financial matters, as there have been no receipts other than what we remitted thither in accordance with what was communicated in our previous year's description. These funds served to defray the domestic expenses, since there were no other outlays, and are detailed in full accountability in the memoranda of the employment of money received from there, appended to the aforementioned ones of the Head Office, being the usual monthly report rendered to us in this regard from Kassembazaar by letters dated 4 May, 4 August, 22 September, 16 November, and 8 December 1789, item 5 March 1790, and from Patna by those dated 1 April, 15 June, 14 August, 2 September, and 7 November of the previous year, as well as January and 4 February of this year. 79. to add thereto, that the lesser amount of the charges on the whole is to be attributed to the decreased operations in this Directie, the successive arrangements and changes made regarding some of the fixed expense items, and indeed mainly to the changed times and circumstances in comparison with those when this memorandum was formed. This one thing and another being the reason and demonstration of the necessity that this document, for the intended purpose for which it was arranged for this Directie, can be of little or no further use, it appeared necessary to us to make such changes therein as accord with the present state of the times. And because the recently received extract from the general resolutions of the Castle Batavia of 22 August 1788, by which it was ordered by circular to revise the memorandum of retrenchment, also tends to that end, we have resolved after the departure of the ships to appoint a committee and have the same examine item by item with the required accuracy and report to us what the expenses charged to each of them consist of, in order to form another memorandum thereafter that is applicable to the present time, which document we shall in due time have the honor to offer to Your Right Noblenesses. 186. Just as took place in the year 1788 in respect of the office at Kassembazaar, we have likewise, at our session of 28 May of the previous year, made a reduction in the servants' wages and ordinary monthly warehouse expenses at Patna; and the former, for which Cr: 225: 12: 29/25 was entered, was fixed at fr: 125:-:-, and the other, which usually amounted to fr: 42:-:- and fr: 43:-:-, set at fr 35:-:- per month, thus judging the one and the other sufficient now that nothing was being done at that office. The Resident Boomgaardt indeed requested of us by his letter of 2 September, dealt with by resolution of 13 October, the retention of two linen sorters and a gunny writer instead of the permitted sercaar, whereby the first-mentioned expenses would have been increased by fr 23: 4:- per month, but we refused this, and at present no more is brought up for those expenses than the stipulated amount. 80. § 87. In order to purge the trade books, with reference to the avoidance of unnecessary expansion, of all such items as could be cancelled from the same—which had already been taken into consideration by us in the year 1788, but had not been carried out for reasons recorded in the resolution of 8 May of the previous year—we assigned on that day to the junior merchant Heyning and the auditor Dolle the commission to examine the said books with the utmost accuracy and, in a detailed report, to submit to us the distinct entries appearing therein that were to be regarded as superfluous and useless, and thus could be cancelled from the same by a proper settlement. This report was presented at our session of 13 October, by the resolution of which date the same was recorded along with our decisions taken thereon and placed in the margin, which we shall briefly cite here so far as necessary, while requesting regarding the previous matters to be permitted to refer thereto.
