On 13 November, being ready to go on board, I received the Imperial requisition, two small samples of ray skins marked letter B, one ditto of areca fruit marked letter K, a small chest containing 33 samples of Chinese medicines marked from No. 1 to 33, together with a list on which these are named in Chinese characters, with the request that Your High Excellencies please send here next year one catty of each sort with their prices, as well as of the remedies specified in a further note, etc., also contained in this chest. The Governor also had three small cakes of opium delivered to me in order to present them to Your High Excellencies and offer them for purchase, having set the prices for what they call the 1st sort at ƒ330 or ƒ44: 10 per catty, the 2nd sort at ƒ250 or ƒ33 per catty. When I expressed to the interpreters, the bringers of this, my astonishment at the excessive value placed on this gummy substance, and told them that Your High Excellencies could make no bid on such an unreasonable demand, nor would Your High Excellencies condescend to do so, even if it were ever so satisfactory and virtuous, they informed me that the Governor had instructed them, the interpreters (probably having well foreseen my difficulty), that the Japanese had never traded in this, nor applied themselves to its preparation; that Your High Excellencies could safely make an offer next year if Your High Excellencies wished to purchase this commodity for the Honorable Company, and that he, the Governor, however low it might be, must and would be satisfied with it. Item, a sample of raw silk that would be obtainable at 4 taels or ƒ13: 4 per catty. Five sorts of Japanese ink according to the samples from No. 1 to 5, and one of black ink, of which one picul would be obtainable annually at the prices stated in an accompanying note. Three samples of sugar commonly brought by the Chinese according to the statement of the Japanese, of which we had the honor Anno 1792. 9 Register of the Marginals To the Resolutions of Japan 29 August Folio in answering the extract missive from the Fatherland of 11 December 1790 under A 175 to mention, I also take the liberty to offer to Your High Excellencies. On 16 November I set out to sea from under the Papenberg and, by God's help, am now steering for this roadstead without notable incident, except that when we sailed on 10 December in the Strait of Bangka alongside two English ships, towards evening we saw several baloos or vessels (supposed by all to be pirates) head straight into or under the shore between the first and second point, of which nothing was heard the next day; but on the 12th at noon, as we could get no further than below the first point due to a calm, thus in the narrowest part of that fairway, and had to anchor there alone (the English having gotten outside), again one after another up to four vessels appeared. Of these, most likely three, around 10 o'clock at night, came rowing and sailing without making any noise straight toward our bow (for the wind freshened a little then) to an improperly short distance, whereupon we denied them further approach by firing three shots with live ammunition—the more so as one could not see or perceive whether and by how many vessels they were followed, and a Palembang cruiser had made the wanton and violent acts known to us—and they sailed off close past us. We note with respect to the agreed delivery of 4500 of the same and 1800 stowage pieces to Captain de Freyn, that we, because it has appeared to us that in the delivery of those copper boxes a considerable abuse is made, have been obliged, in the dispositions upon that finding of the Japanese trade books from the years 1787/6 to 1788/9 of which we shall make mention in the continuation of this, to devise the necessary provisions against it, and according to which we order Your Honour strictly to conduct yourself. Because the Company, with the price increase of only 13 1/5 stuivers on the piece of the same, cannot subsist, the more so as that linen cannot be obtained except with difficulty, we therefore authorize Your Honour to make use of the return for the same proposed by the Japanese, if they do not desire to give a higher price, in order to test whether they are truly in earnest about this. Because the same, as aforementioned, loses over 55 percent, we have excused the shipment of that article for the future, if the funds can be found through other articles. Lead.
