Demands and whatever could serve to convince the Sarkar, and we were fully strengthened in this by the statement of the agent of the Sarkar that he was convinced that the fishery could no longer be continued, considering moreover that it was not possible to compel a body of foreign people in an open country, we thus agreed with the Moor man to cease the fishery. The oysters, which together amounted to a number of 26823, had been separately stored under the supervision of the servants of both parties, and as Mr. Torin by letter of the 30th of April had proposed to sell these oysters publicly and add the proceeds to the lease sum, this took place pursuant to the order of the Chief on the 3rd of this month, the said oysters having fetched pagodas 388 19/20 at the sale; after which, on the same day in the afternoon, after the superintendent of the English, Mr. Benjamin Torin, was now fully convinced of the impossibility of continuing the fishery any longer with any success and of the necessity of having to cease the same, according to his qualification and by order of our commander, in our presence the flags of both parties were struck outside in the camp as proof that the fishery had come to an end, and one also immediately saw the dhonies, which had remained behind only out of fear of the Sarkar, return in all haste to their homes. Lastly, we add to this that since this time no expressly qualified official of the fishery from the Sarkar had arrived, the fishery was managed entirely by us alone without the intervention of the people of the Sarkar, but that we, only in accordance with the arrangements made by the Chief in cases where it could be useful for the future that an official of the Sarkar had assisted therein, made use of the servants of the Sarkar who, although found here without any public qualification, also willingly allowed themselves to be employed as much and as little as we wished to make use of them; that since no one has now come who has demanded a separate bazaar for the Sarkar, and as of old there has been no more than one bazaar without distinction of people, which was entirely under our jurisdiction, while the complaints and disputes among the people of the fishery without distinction of jurisdiction or caste were settled by the renter. Our endeavor in the execution of this commission has been to earn the good pleasure of our commanders; should we succeed therein and should our actions meet with the approval of Your Right Honorable, it would honor us to the highest degree, and we would persevere with all diligence to give proof of the high esteem and loyalty with which we have the honor to be, Right Honorable High-Commanding Lord, Your Right Honorable's humble and dutiful servants, D. v. d.
