Appended to the long invoices are the declarations of the ship's captain and of the commissioners concerning the bottom stowage of four cases of sample pepper laden aboard the ship De Gerechtigheid. There are also to be found therewith the declarations of the seaworthiness and proper loading of these ships, separately executed by the captains and captain-lieutenants. We have on this occasion instructed the usual commissioners for the branding of the chests and cases, etc. of the passengers and other persons crossing over on these ships, to state in the list they normally submit which private freight goods in chests, cases, or casks they have likewise branded; of which two copies shall be delivered to each of the captains so that, pursuant to the order, they may be handed over to the commanders of the State's ships upon meeting them. For the purchase of fresh provisions and other necessities on the homeward voyage, we have caused one hundred and seventy-five Mexican dollars to be issued to each of the captains of these departing ships, and have also caused to be handed to them extracts from Your Right Honourables' order by letter of the 22nd of December not to call at any foreign ports without necessity. The passengers and other persons crossing over on these ships consist of the following, namely: On the ship De Gerechtigheid: The Director of Surat, Mr. Abraham Josias Sluijsken, who upon his request made to that end was discharged in the most honourable manner by Their High Excellencies the Supreme Government of the Indies at Batavia, with retention of rank, pay, and baggage, taking with him five free servants, one of whom only as far as the Cape. The two English military lieutenants who arrived from Surat, named John Alsager and John Charles Sheen, who each paid one thousand rupees, or f 1500 Indies currency, for passage into the Company's treasury here. The Lutheran candidate and son of the former Chief Administrator of Nagapatnam, Johnson, named Johannes Gualterus Johnson, the usual passage and board money having been paid for him at Colombo. The son of the late Administrator of Jaffanapatnam Jan Jacob Gilbert, named Jacob Cornelis Gilbert, for whom the passage and board money has been paid at Colombo. The youths Adriaan Reinier and Johan Jacob Weinsheimer, for whom the usual passage and board money has likewise been paid here.

2099 The young son of the First Clerk of Surat, Gratiaen, named Abraham Josias, aged 6 years, for whom the passage and board have been paid here: On the ship Drechterland. The Lieutenant in English service, named John Goodsman, who arrived here from Tutukorijn, for whom the passage money to the amount of one thousand Rupees, or ƒ 1500., has been paid here. The young son of the junior merchant at Surat, van Albedijht, named Christer Maxemiliaen Godfried, aged 9 years, for whom the customary passage and board have been paid here. The son of the late junior merchant and cashier of Jaffna, Lebeck, named Hendrik Justus Lebeck, for whom the passage and board have been paid at Colombo. The youth Rudolph Fredrik Cornelisze, for whom the customary passage and board have been paid here. Furthermore, there are traveling on these ships the wives of the sergeant of the Regiment de Meuron, Lodewijk Gres, and of the soldier Iohan Coenraad Bode, who is traveling home as an invalid, named Anna Francina Perleriin and Emmetje Crijstie; the latter on the return ship De Gerechtigheid, on which her husband has been placed, though without having paid passage 3. or board, because according to a notification from the Ceylon Government she has affirmed having already paid this in the Netherlands for the outward and homeward voyage. The first-named woman has likewise not paid passage or board, either for herself or for her three children, among whom is an infant, but she has bound herself, whenever your Right Honorable Worships should require such from her, to pay the same then, and the deed of the notarial obligation thereof is attached hereto, the said two women and children remaining further without expense to the Company. The Ceylon Government has also permitted the bombardier Iacob Karon, who is crossing on this occasion, to repatriate. Furthermore, three deported non-commissioned officers are going to the Netherlands on the ship Drechterland, mentioned in a separate name list, and we hereby comply with the order of the Ceylon Government by reporting to your Right Honorable Worships that on account of their bad behavior and continuous excessive drinking they are unfit for the Company's service, and at their own request E 2308 are departing for the Netherlands. Furthermore, several invalids have been sent to us by the aforementioned Ceylon Government, who are likewise now crossing to the Netherlands and are listed in the name list of invalids attached hereto. On the ship Drechterland, there is also traveling the soldier of the Regiment de Meuron named Polveij, according to the verdict of the court-martial of the said Regiment, sent over to us for that purpose, and of which the papers in a packet have been handed to Captain van Eps by written warrant, to be delivered to him himself upon his arrival in the Netherlands and not earlier. Also, the said captain has been ordered that he may not be allowed to go ashore at the Cape, in accordance with the aforementioned verdict. Among the freight goods permitted by the Esteemed Ceylon Government and crossing on these ships, there are also a small box of cardamom from Malabar plants, and a small box of of sandalwood from the sworn clerk Pieter Cornelis de Vos at Colombo.
