My Worthy Sir The suppliers of our Company have complained to me this morning that a sepoy of the Honorable English Company entered into the house of a weaver who was working for the Dutch Company, took with force and violence a piece of Naginapaats from the loom and carried it into the house of another weaver, whereupon all the other weavers went to Rustom Jessoe to inquire what the intention of such treatment meant, and that this Parsi allegedly declared that an order had been issued to work for no one else than exclusively for the English Company. I therefore find myself obliged to request Your Honor most strongly, that Your Honor may be pleased to prevent such treatment, which is not only without precedent, but even an infringement of our privileges, which grant us the right to an open and free trade. At the same time, in the capacity of a friend, I must not keep concealed from Your Honor that the orders, given to the weavers in such a manner that they shall work for no one until the coming month of January, have caused a very great outcry. I have myself questioned the weavers; they are currently with me, and if you wish, I can send them to Your Honor. Send. Our Director, Mr. Abraham Josias Sluijsken, having received his discharge from the administration of the affairs of the Directorate, with permission to return to his fatherland, and Mr. Peter Sluijsken having been appointed by our High Superiors to succeed him, we take the liberty to inform Your Honors thereof by this letter, at the same time that the first-mentioned requests permission to embrace the opportunity in order to solicit Your Honors to receive his sincere gratitude, not only for the manifold proofs of courtesy and attention with which he has been honored by Your Honor, Chief Mr. Griffith, and by each of you, Gentlemen, but also especially for the happy harmony and good understanding which has existed between the two factories during his administration, and of which he will always preserve the true feeling, while we solicit the continuation of that same desirable harmony, toward which we on our part shall contribute everything possible. Memorandum Examined Jn: Houghton stated in the Memorandum of Retrenchment are exactly the same as those set down by me in previous account balances for some years, and are attributable, as yet, to a reduced sale of cloves by as much as 54262½ lb, since the import from elsewhere has hitherto prevented them from being disposed of at the fixed prices; a reduced sale of nutmegs by as much as 27918 1/8 lb and of mace up to 2434:—. lb, which could not be obtained; furthermore, the lack of any sale of Japanese copper, of which, on account of its low price, not a single pound could be sold this entire financial year; and finally the interest on the negotiated capital, which reduced the profits by fully ƒ61365:11:8. While the increase in these profits, in comparison with the previous financial year, owes its origin primarily to a greater sale of cloves & powdered sugar. The expenses were determined in the Memorandum of Retrenchment and the general regulations on provisions for servants at about ƒ119500:—:—, which according to current value is now ƒ95600:—: The same have amounted in the past financial year to ƒ62829:2:8.
