In compliance with what concerns this in the Council of Policy on 14 January and 8 May of the year 1746, we, the undersigned members of the Council of Justice here, by order of the Right Honorable Sir Cornelis Jacob van de Graaff, Governor and Director in loco, etc., etc., etc., in the presence of the Captain of the ship De Twee Gezusters, Wouter Jacobsen, have tasted such 5 leagers of Cape white wines marked from No. 1 to 5 as have been shipped today in that vessel per invoice for the fatherland, and have found those wines good of taste and the leagers in good condition, the aforesaid casks being branded with the Honorable Company's brand, and from each of those leagers, in the presence as aforesaid, a bottle was drawn off, which, sealed with the Honorable Company's mark and numbered like the leagers, has been delivered to the said commander to serve as a sample. Thinking hereby to have properly complied, we let this serve as a humble report. Below stood: In the Castle of Good Hope, 7 February 1787. Was signed: V. Echten, C. Matthyssen. Agrees. E. Dimel, sworn clerk No. 11. 120 of the East India Company of the United Netherlands at Amsterdam Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed, High and Mighty Lords: Since my presence here, having found that neither with us nor with other nations were good sea charts of the southern coast of Africa available, and it having become known to me that the Sea Captain and Master of Equipage of this Government, Duminy, on his various voyages which he had made along those coasts and bays, had many observations and separate charts of the situation and direction of the bays and soundings of the Reef or the Bank of Agulhas, I required and earnestly requested of him, on the occasion of his voyage made in the past year to Mozambique, to make the further observations regarding that entire southern coast still lacking to him, in order to join all his separate pieces together and to be able to bring them into a general plan. To the 17 per De Twee Gezusters To Their Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed the Lords Directors, etc., etc., etc. 483. 484. Chart room In the Castle of the Cape of Good Hope, the 13th of February 1787. He has then gladly complied therewith and formed therefrom a very interesting chart, which I have the honor herewith respectfully to submit to Your Right Honorable High Mightinesses. And because I dare hold myself assured that the capes and bays of that entire region are brought on that chart to their true longitude and latitude, I dare flatter myself that thereby a substantial service will be rendered to Dutch navigation, and thus that this work will give some satisfaction to Your Right Honorable High Mightinesses. The aforesaid Sea Captain Duminy is further engaged in bringing each bay found on the aforesaid sea coast to a larger scale, with the addition of the anchorages and grounds in each of the same, together with a memorandum relative thereto, which I hope also to have the honor in due time to transmit likewise to Your Right Honorable High Mightinesses. With the ship De Schelde, on which the Honorable Mr. Boesses, at present here, is traveling, I shall among other papers further have the honor to send a duplicate of the abovementioned chart to Your Right Honorable High Mightinesses. The soundings of Table Bay and of the roadstead off or near Robben Island have also been made pursuant to Your Right Honorable High Mightinesses' venerated orders, and they are engaged in putting the same in final form on a plan of the aforesaid bay and coast specially prepared for that purpose, up to past or north of Robben Island, which piece I also hope soon to have the honor of being able to transmit to Your Right Honorable High Mightinesses. Right Honorable, Steadfast, Highly Esteemed, Highly Wise, Provident, and Most Generous Lords, High and Mighty Lords: Per the French private ship La Colonne Having had the honor, by our humble letters of the 10th of this month of November, dispatched per the Dutch private ship the Jacoba Maria and Lucia Theresia, which vessel departed on the 21st thereafter from this roadstead for the Netherlands, to give notice to Your Right Honorable High Mightinesses of the resolution that we have had to take; in order, besides the cargo of wheat and rice brought for this Government by the French ship Le Fabius from Isle de France, to purchase also on the Company's account a similar cargo from the captain of the French ship Le Consolateur, likewise transported from there hither: We now take the liberty, as in duty bound, further to advise Your Right Honorable High Mightinesses in that regard, that the abovementioned cargo of the ship Le Consolateur, consisting of 109,246 lb of wheat and 292,744 lb of rice, thus 401,990 pounds of wheat and rice together, at six Spanish reals per 100 pounds for both wheat and rice, has been received into the Company's grain warehouse here, and that on the amount of the purchase money, the sum of 24,119 Spanish dollars, to the captain of the aforesaid ship Le Consolateur, Pierre

487 Pierre Nicolas de Fleuriot, here, a sum of 12000 Spanish dollars in cash in specie having been paid from the Honorable Company's treasury, on account of the remaining 12119 Spanish dollars, making 72714 livres tournois, at 6 livres per Spanish dollar, pursuant to the purchase contracted with the said Captain Fleuriot, there have been granted the following ten bills of exchange on Your Right Honorable Excellencies, to be paid six months after sight to the same Captain Pierre Nicolas Fleuriot, or to his order, namely: 2 Bills of exchange of 10000 livres each, 20000 livres 3 ditto of 8000 livres each, 24000 livres Carried forward 44000 livres.
