The principal defendant attests never to have led such a manner of life, as is improper for an honest man, but always to have maintained good order in his household, and in case of disobedience of the said slave woman or his other bondspersons, he sought to bring them to reason with domestic punishments; declarations No. 1 to 6. But that it is a pure truth that the Officer Plaintiff, upon the unfounded complaints and impermissible accusations of the principal defendant's slave woman Jannetje, summoned the principal defendant, No. 22, and by many threats to make the principal defendant wretched, extorted the same slave woman with her child from the principal defendant for one hundred rixdollars, which the principal defendant was made to receive at the home of the messenger Wotky, and had to execute a deed of transfer there in the name of the said Wotky, and was only then permitted to take his two other slaves with him, is indisputable. The Officer Plaintiff now requests in his conclusion to your Honors to have the aforesaid slave woman with her child sold to the highest bidder, on condition that the defendant or his family should not be permitted to purchase the same slave woman and her child. Appeared before the Honorable Worshipful Council of Justice of this government the Landdrost of Swellendam Constant van Nult Onkruydt, prosecuting plaintiff on the one part, upon and against Elizabeth Rossouw, wife of the farmer Johan Fredrik Conradi, and the same Johan Fredrik Conradi as husband and guardian of his aforesaid wife, defendants. Article 1: And the prosecuting plaintiff caused to be submitted 2 That Your Honorable Worships having been pleased 3 to place into the hands of the prosecuting plaintiff a certain petition presented to Your Honorable Worships by the female defendant in this matter, as well as by virtue of the authorization granted by her husband mentioned in the heading of this document, 4 to the end of serving a report upon that petition. 5 That the prosecuting plaintiff, in fulfillment of Your Honorable Worships' highly esteemed resolution, also having submitted on 31 July of this year the same report, furnished with the documents annexed hereto in authenticated copy. 6 Upon which all Your Honorable Worships have been pleased to qualify the prosecuting plaintiff to act by virtue of office against the female defendant in this matter as well as against her husband, the burgher Johan Fredrik Conradi. 7 The prosecuting plaintiff, accordingly also by virtue of the same honored appointment granted upon his report, with respectful correction, has deemed it necessary to formulate this claim against the female defendant in this matter. Article 8: And whereas the crimes committed by the female defendant in this matter are twofold, 9 namely firstly: 10 in the mistreatment committed upon the female slave Jannetje of the Cape, 11 and secondly: in the calumnious injuries done in writing to the prosecuting plaintiff by the female defendant in her petition presented to Your Honorable Worships, 12 the prosecuting plaintiff will thus take the liberty also to deal with the same as twofold in this manner. 13 To substantiate the first-mentioned point or the first crime of the female defendant, it would be superfluous to demonstrate at length 14 the nature of the crime, 15 since the inhumane treatment was the reward for the faithful conduct of the female slave Jannetje, 16 as this clearly shines forth from the statement of the female slave, 17 and whereby the marks of the mistreatment which she showed to the honorable commissioners from this Honorable Worshipful Council 18 are speaking proofs thereof, 19 since even all impartial persons, having viewed the same mistreatment on the female slave on her way to lodge a complaint, 20 deemed the same mistreatment to be contrary to the laws, and for that reason also assisted her on her complaining journey, 21 as Your Honorable Worships can perceive all this, more broadly detailed, from the aforesaid annexed documents marked from Letter A to E inclusive. 22 So that it appears very clearly therefrom 23 that the defendant in this matter has committed an act contrary to the laws 24 and contrary to the duties of a Christian, 25 the defendant consequently has thereby incurred the liability to be extraordinarily punished on that account.

That the ship's council, having subsequently interrogated the persons who had been apprehended that morning, thereupon resolved by resolution of 18 July to first execute by summary execution nine individuals, namely 1st François de valbonne, 2nd Martin Blavegnar, 3rd Anthonij Feij, 4th Iean Babtist Janim, 5th guilliaume vivant, 6th Nouel outers, 7th Etienne Nerret, 8th Jean Pierke Richet, 9th Nicolaas du Croux; the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 9th being soldiers of the Honorable Company, the 6th a house carpenter, and the 2nd, 5th, 7th, and 8th soldiers of the Legion of Luxembourg. And these same nine individuals were then also immediately put to death on board with the cord, while furthermore upon closer investigation two others, by name franciscus van der voerder and Iaan Michiel visser, both soldiers of the Honorable Company, as accomplices of those previously executed, were likewise sentenced to death by the same ship's council, and this sentence was immediately carried into execution. That thereafter the seven remaining, by name Elias de Costa, Tobias Blas, franciscus verbrugge, michiel Princenrade, Jan grebel, franciscus valeran, and Jan van kruisen, who, although not convicted, were nevertheless under vehement suspicion of having taken part in the same conspiracy, were seized both at that time and some days thereafter and held in custody in order to be surrendered upon arrival here to the Honorable Council of Justice. That in the meantime, having met the national squadron under command of the Honorable Sir Wiertz, the ship's council had resolved once again to transfer the same six suspected mutineers, one of them by name franciscus Falevan having in the meantime died, to the same. That further, during the transport of the same six persons to the warship, a certain soldier in the service of the Honorable Company and named Jean Babtist Dupui, amid various malcontent gestures in the presence of the sailor Lambelin, had stated to fellow soldier Simon Raimonde that the Captain, along with all the officers, were a bunch of rogues! As no small suspicion arose against him, Dupuis, from this, he, the Captain, had immediately caused the same to be seized as well and likewise delivered as suspected mutineers into the hands of the Commander of the national warship. The Right Honorable Sir Governor and the Honorable Council of Policy here, immediately upon this report, reclaimed the same aforementioned seven suspected prisoners from the said national warship and by resolution of 1 November 1786 resolved to place them, along with the documents of the aforementioned ship's council of the ship De Jonge Frank, into the hands of the officer of justice, the plaintiff, in order to be brought to trial before this Honorable Council after proper further information and examinations. That as the aforementioned 7 prisoners upon their arrival at the Cape, on account of their indisposition and weak condition, were entirely unable to be properly questioned and interrogated, the officer of justice, the plaintiff, therefore, with the foreknowledge of the Honorable Lord President, had the same transported to the Hospital here, so that whenever they might recover or improve, they could be examined before Commissioners from this Honorable Council in conformity with the said resolution of the Honorable Council of Policy; however, shortly thereafter, three of them, namely the aforementioned Tobias Blas, franciscus Terbrugge, and Ian Grebel, came to pass away. That in the meantime, the officer of justice, the plaintiff, having inquired into all the circumstances concerning the remaining four prisoners, Michiel Princenrade, Ian van Kruis, Elias de Costa, and Ian Babtist du Puis, with the said authorities of the ship De Jonge Frank, and having carefully examined the documents supplied with respect to them by the aforementioned Captain to the Right Honorable Sir Governor, it appeared to the officer of justice, the plaintiff: That the principal accusations against the four aforementioned prisoners, or rather the reasons why they were considered suspect by the ship's council and placed in custody, consisted of the following: That the 1st mentioned, Michiel Princenrade, is said to have asked the boatswain of his ship, named Iacobus Schelleman, on 15 July, and thus one day before the revolt took place on that vessel, how far they were from Cadiz. That he, Princenrade, upon the counter-question from him, Schelleman, as to why he wished to know this, is said to have answered: that if one could rely as much upon the Germans as upon the French, one would indeed want to steer the ship to Cadiz; while from the discourse further held on that occasion by him, Princenrade, with that boatswain, it became not unclearly evident that he, Princenrade, not only had knowledge of the imminent heinous enterprise, but that he himself had indeed consented to it and sought to win over the aforementioned boatswain to his interests.
