Annex No a9 Copy I the undersigned Jan Christoffel Aucamp declare hereby at the requisition of the currently appointed former Bookkeeper Johan Jacob Fredrik Wagener as follows: That in the past year 1792 there were here on the Sneeuwberg two servants of the Company's contracted Butchers, named Hafner and Nauman, to buy slaughter stock. That the same servants showed a note signed by the Van Rheenen brothers (not having paid sufficient attention to the first names to be able to state them), the content of which I myself read out in the presence of the man Carel David Gerots and the Field Cornet Pieter Ernst Kruger, stating in substance that whoever wished to sell their wethers for twelve schellingen would receive payment immediately upon presenting the butcher's note, but that whoever demanded more for their wethers would have to wait six months for payment. That being in need of some goods, I then resolved to sell one hundred and, as best as I can recall, sixty-nine wethers, on the condition that prompt payment would be obtained. That the said Pieter Oberholster, having addressed the Company's butchers in the month of June of the same year 1792, received no payment, but obtained as an answer that he had to wait six months, namely until the month of October. That this resulted in the repeatedly mentioned Pieter Oberholster being forced to exchange the butcher's note for trade goods, and upon his return here he recounted everything in detail to me. Dregterland Copy Ship To the Right Honourable, Highly Esteemed Lord, Mr. Abrahaam Josias Sluijsken, Ordinary Councillor of the Netherlands Indies, and Commissioner over the Cape of Good Hope and its Dependency, etc., etc., etc. Right Honourable, Highly Esteemed Lord, Before I succeeded in being admitted as a citizen of the Cape, I dispatched a ship named Jean Bart, Capt. Gandron, the ship and cargo belonging to me, to the Coast of Bengal and Madras. When the said Captain had conducted my business there and was returning to Mauritius, he was overtaken on the way by contrary winds and, through lack of water, was forced to decide to call at the Island of Sumatra at Pedir, where he also immediately found everything he needed; but when the said Captain was preparing to depart anew, settling his affairs with the natives, they took advantage of the moment when the said Captain was drinking a coconut, [illegible] to plunge a poisoned dagger through his chest, which deprived him of his life; furthermore, proceeding on board, they inflicted the same fate upon the second captain, named Maiause from Bordeaux, as well as upon a part of the rest of the crew, while at the same time they plundered my ship. The Governor of Pulau Pinang, learning of this deed, immediately dispatched an English ship to rescue whatever he could; but nothing was found except the said ship with very few white men, which ship was subsequently taken to Pondicherry and there sold for the benefit of the underwriters. My correspondents in Europe, being Messrs. Cabarrus and Sons, merchants in Bordeaux, who were instructed to have the said ship insured, having informed me that this was done in London, I therefore take the liberty to submit to Your Right Honourable: how the war between France and various powers now utterly prevents all regular correspondence, but that I have all titles of ownership to present myself without fear, if I obtain permission to depart for London, to my creditors and to claim a capital sum which I intend to spend in Holland on the purchase of a ship to navigate in these seas, which offer a promising prospect to an industrious person. And that, although my trading does not place me in a position to have sufficient funds at hand for this voyage, seeing that I am obliged to leave a large quantity of merchandise here which cannot be sold in bulk, and it being known to Your Right Honourable how I recently dispatched the ship the Hoop op Welvaaren to St. Helena, I nevertheless now have the opportunity not only to proceed to the aforementioned island on an English fishing vessel, but also through other opportunities to send word thither in order to secure a sum for myself with which I intend to prudently provide for myself; wherefore I request the indulgence that my unfortunate situation leads me to hope to obtain from Your Right Honourable. That with the petitioners continually taking into consideration the better circumstances in which the colony and residents currently find themselves, since however much they had cherished the flattering prospect of working fruitfully toward obtaining those advantages for which a door was opened by the favorable disposition of the Lords Commissioners-General, they nevertheless find themselves up to now, on account of the intervening unfortunate war with the French, not only deprived of all those advantageous prospects, but must even determine, on the foundation of the reports received of the progress which the French with their war-equipped ships and privateers, alas, are once again making to the considerable prejudice of the Dutch East India Company in the Indies, that here locally one will soon see oneself deprived of the most essential necessities from the Indies, and through the lack of exportation of our country's products, the total ruin of the residents of this important settlement would quickly be the consequence thereof, if this were not provided for in one way or another. Dregterland To the to issue to his crew, who their grievances concerning this meager issue of food to them petitioner have been able to give ƒ That the petitioner, in order to remove these so legitimate grievances, has been compelled to deviate from the regulations established on the victualing list, and accordingly made such additional issues to the aforesaid crew as the petitioner deemed to be sufficient to be able properly to feed them. And we found those wines good of taste, and the leggers well conditioned, the aforementioned cooperage being branded with the Company mark, and one bottle tapped from each legger in the presence of the aforementioned, which were sealed with the Company mark, numbered as the leggers, and delivered to the aforementioned Captain to serve as a sample.
