in hope of your High Noblenesses favorable approval, the above-mentioned shortfall of supplied necessities has been written off as caused without the fault of the authorities, with humble entreaty that they may remain relieved of the compensation thereof. While we humbly offer the unusable gunpowder to the very same per the Pantjallang De Snuffelaar, which is now proceeding to your High Noblenesses, which little vessel we, as soon as was possible, had transferred by Boatswain Claas van Dam, who had held command over it, to the mate Theodorus Toussaint, who arrived here per De Valkenaar, but having found ourselves obliged to have that small vessel somewhat repaired on account of heavy leakage, we thus most humbly present to your High Noblenesses the specification of what was spent on repairs to it, amounting to ƒ 407: 16: — which we humbly request to be permitted to write off in our trade books, as well as ƒ 413: 10: 8: for the two months' rations provided to this little vessel for making the voyage to Batavia, and we would have given him his dispatches even earlier had heavy south and south-east winds not made beating up to Crimata impossible, for it is unexampled here that a vessel can undertake the voyage to Java before the month of October without running the risk of drifting below this place due to the currents and winds, as the Company's vessels experienced in the year 1729, having returned here again on the 7th of September from a lost voyage, after having lost almost all their anchors and ropes under Crimata. And whereas the Pantjallang De Snuffelaar departed in the year 1778 from India's capital under convoy of the bark Den Arend and without sea charts, and this little vessel was thus destitute of them here, we have, in hope of your High Noblenesses' esteemed approval, taken three charts from the Pantjallang De Valkenaar remaining here, and had the same delivered to them, wherefore we respectfully request of your very goodness to be provided with the same again when opportunity arises. Concerning trade, this is not only beginning to decline sharply, but we can assure your High Noblenesses that it is going entirely to ruin here, because private trade is completely at a standstill and thus few or no products are brought down by the up-country people, whereby and because of the high prices at which both the jewels and the gold are, we have not dared to undertake a large purchase of diamonds, since from the reports received as an obligation regarding the appraisal of that stone at Batavia it is all too clearly evident that the same are bought here at a much higher price by the Bugis, as paying currently up to eight round reals for the carat weight of ordinary stones, and because it has appeared to the humble undersigned from the aforesaid report that the price of the large sorts causes the formidable difference of over sixteen percent, we found ourselves compelled, in order not to fall into the stagnation of that trade, to purchase gradually 132 1/6 carats of the smallest assortment, which we now respectfully offer to the very same and according to invoice and money amount to ƒ 2900: 4: — and since we have been unable to obtain the same for a lower price, we most humbly request your High Noblenesses to be pleased to be satisfied therewith, which we likewise are most humbly entreating regarding the Mempawah and Sanggau gold, which we have not dared to decide to purchase on account of its poor alloy and high price, as the humble undersigned cannot vouch for the low content, since by the reports gradually received here from the Assayer of goods the Mempawah or Pontianak gold has always assayed over nineteen carats, and this gold now recently could only reach 18 carats 11 1/2 grains to 18 carats 4 grains, although we nevertheless were obliged to buy the one as well as the other at ten Dutch reals per real weight, besides that the weight of round reals in use here is much lighter than the Company's mark weight, and that the humble undersigned would not only suffer heavy losses through the gold collection but would in the long run be ruined, as they are obliged along with others to follow the established market or otherwise resign themselves to being unable to obtain anything. gentlemen, regarding the gold sent over by the bark den Arend and the pantjallang De valdenaar, which upon examination was judged to be worth so much less than what it was purchased for here; having been counted into the Company's treasury by us pursuant to the honored orders of Your Right Noblenesses, we nevertheless make bold to respectfully implore the goodness of the same to be favorably relieved from this considerable charge, which tends to the ruin of the humble undersigned, as nothing further can be imputed to them than that, through an eager collection of that product, they sought to convince the same that they spared no effort or diligence to bring this trading post into a favorable light with Your Right Noblenesses. The same had to advance cash at their own risk to acquire the same, and suffered several bankruptcies as a result. Pepper, which is not cultivated at all in these parts, we are unable to offer to the same and to fulfill the demand received, as well as the wax, which during this entire year could not be obtained below twenty-four reals, and is thus considerably higher in price than Your Right Noblenesses' authorization for its purchase dictates. And although we have earnestly remonstrated with Sultan Sarieff regarding this chapter, and brought to his attention that no branch of trade whatsoever has been reserved for him, he seems to care as little about this as about all other matters, becoming from day to day more indifferent in his conduct. Regarding the cash sales, and principally of the bar iron, we can give Your Right Noblenesses as little favorable news as concerning the domains, which in a full year have yielded no more than 531 1/120 reals, as the notes appended hereto in all respect come to demonstrate. And notwithstanding that we have indeed earnestly brought it to Sultan Sarieff's understanding that the decline of trade is solely to be imputed to him, through the poor payment he makes to the merchant, and that by continuing thus and listening to no good advice the Company could impossibly establish itself here with fruit any longer, His Highness nevertheless becomes from day to day more indifferent in his affairs, promising indeed all good things whenever one is with him, but placing the same quite as quickly into the book of oblivion. Having also delayed the humble undersigned until now with promises of intending to think of discharging his debt to the Company, we very much doubt whether this will ever be fulfilled in an amicable manner, since he is currently so impoverished that he sometimes has nothing in his dalem to feed himself and his servants. We shall, however, not cease continually to urge him to pay, and, as far as our capacities permit, endeavor to see to it that the Company obtains its security, as we have therefore also credited his account once again for half of what little was profited from the leases, and at the same time debited it for that with which His Highness's account in the past year had been favored too early, on account of the profit realized from the payment on the sale of the rice and salt that had been projected for him, but was converted by us, and have carried this amount, to the sum of ƒ 394:12:-, pursuant to the honored orders of Your Right Noblenesses, to the Company's profit account. The bad condition and settlement of the Company's dwelling and warehouses, as a result of which no goods could any longer be entrusted to them, and one daily ran the risk during heavy squalls that the same would collapse (just as in the past year the dwelling of the humble undersigned did indeed collapse), may Your Right Noblenesses please not attribute to us, but rather to the marshy ground that is everywhere here, and extends inland for more than sixteen miles, the land here being constantly under water in the west monsoon. By this, everyone residing in these parts finds himself obliged, every two and at most three years, to undertake renovations to his buildings and to provide the same annually with a new roof, since, due to the heavy downpours continually falling here, they immediately succumb to rot, and nothing other than atap can be procured here for roofing. We have thus, in order to avoid great expense, proceeding in the most economical manner with the Company's servants stationed here, repaired the buildings and placed the same on ironwood pillars and a grating, so that one currently need not fear flooding, having also employed all the planks of the old factory for this purpose; but, instead of the decayed beams, having been obliged to purchase some new ones, as well as the pillars and the grating.

and we would have requested some merchandise from Your Right Honourables' benevolence had we been assured that trade here would revive again; in this current stagnation we would be able to find no market for it, nor any specie, unless it might yet please Your Right Honourables to authorize us for the purchase of Sangouw gold at eleven, and that of Mampawa at ten Rijksdaalders per thial weight. The list of general remainders of this office we present most humbly to Your Right Honourables, along with a note of the merchandise on hand here, which being drawn up according to the model received for its execution, we shall thus also meet the esteemed intention of Your Right Honourables regarding sales. Concerning native affairs, we note hereby that on the 5th of July last the Sultan's wife and children arrived here from Banjer, although her brother the Prince of Banjarmassing, according to rumors, took great pains to divert her from this journey, but having employed everything in vain toward this end, finally, being as it were forced to follow her desire, His Highness let her depart, without however giving any of his subjects along for escort, about which Sultan Sarieff appeared to be very dissatisfied at the beginning. But this princess, having been here not yet half a month, had already regretted having left Banjer, seeing her little bit of gold and jewels strongly diminishing from day to day, without her, any more than anyone else, gaining any influence over the mind of Sarieff to persuade him to another way of life, to which she daily attempts to persuade His Highness, and frequently falls into discord with him over it. Regarding Landak and Sangouw, we can report nothing else to Your Right Honourables than that the upper-country people now come down here very little, but mostly go to Mampawa to purchase Javanese products and other goods, as nothing is to be had at Pontianac, and the little that is still there is considerably high in price, because during this entire year only five Javanese vessels, and from other places none at all, have entered here. Submitting most humbly the answer of Sultan Sarieff to the letter and gifts received from Your Right Honourables, which were delivered to the court with proper solemnity, we also present to the same a little bamboo handed over by the prince as a gift, wherein according to his statement are ten reals of dust gold. With regard to foreign nations, we find it proper to inform the same that the rumors that spread here in the past month of July, that two English vessels had been seen off and on Sambas, and a few days after this news, being communicated to us by the master of the pantjallang De Valkenaar, which little vessel at that time was still lying outside on the bank, that a snow was cruising before the bank, which he could not identify as it showed no flag, we therefore immediately had our small entrenchment on Batoelaijang reinforced, in order, in case of any attack, to make the landing difficult for the enemy there. But on the third day, this vessel making sail turned to the north, and having heard nothing more since that time, we nevertheless continuously maintain good watch everywhere, so as not to be surprised unawares. Private trade, which has come to a total standstill here, begins to flourish more than ever at Mampawa and Sambas, as there have already arrived at the first-mentioned place this year upwards of fifty Javanese traders, besides a multitude of other vessels from the places situated hereabouts. Appeared before the undersigned commissioners, the mate Reijndert van den Bergh, commander on the pantjallang De Valkenaar, and the Sergeant Dirk Voelaart, in the presence of me, the secunde of this office, a bondsman of Sulthaan Sarieph named Lampong, Seram caste, who declared that several weeks ago he was asked by the soldier Willem Vroomhoff whether he would run away with him, that he would take a girl along and thus the three of them would go to Sambas; to which proposal, made to him often and repeatedly, the deponent consented half-heartedly about 6 to 7 days ago, though not intending to carry it out; that on that occasion the said Vroomhoff instructed him, the deponent, to come along the palisade of the factory after midnight, that he wanted to give him a musket for sale in order to provision themselves for the journey; which the deponent complying with, went along the palisade of the factory at night between 1 and 2, and after waiting a short while, the said Vroomhoff handed him a musket along with three grenadier caps, which he, the deponent, accepted and subsequently carried away and hid, but the next day the said Vroomhoff instructed him to sell it, which he also did to a Chinese from Taijang for three imperial dollars, having handed over 3 rupees to the said Vroomhoff, the caps remaining buried until yesterday when it became known that he, the deponent, had sold the said musket. We, the undersigned, Claas van Steenvoorden, assistant surgeon, and Claas van Dam, boatswain and commander on the pantchiallang De Snuffelaar, both stationed here in such capacity, declare in the interest of the truth and at the requisition of the Residents here, the Honorable Walter Marcus Stuart and Jacob Kaagman, that on the 18th of this month, in the morning between three and five o'clock, the flooding of the water tide increased unusually, and indeed to such an extent that notwithstanding all prior elevations made to the Company's residential and warehouses, and all efforts expended for the preservation of the Company's grains, nevertheless no more than 2073 lb of rice remained dry, and which were weighed and further stored by us as specially appointed commissioners; which, when so requested, we are at all times prepared to affirm and maintain under solemn oath. We, the undersigned officers, all stationed on the Company's pantchiallang De Valkenaar, namely the passenger Theodorus Toussaint, the quartermaster Johan Herman Wilhelm Bos, declare at the requisition of the commander Reijndert van den Berg of the Company's vessel De Valkenaar, that on the voyage from Batavia to Pontiana, due to continuous heavy storm weather, high seas, and excessive water that we had on the voyage, a part of the Company's cargo for the Pontiana factory has been spoiled, namely five thousand two hundred and twenty-eight pounds of rice, 1 barrel of breach powder, and one half-aam of lamp oil, burst due to the violent rolling. All the above we testify to be the pure truth, and being at all times willing and prepared, when requested, to be able to confirm the same under solemn oath. Signed: T. Appeared before the undersigned commissioners, the assistant surgeon Claas van Steenvoorden, and Claas van Dam, boatswain and commander on the pantchiallang De Snuffelaar, present me, second-in-command of this factory, the European arrived here the day before yesterday with the subjects of Sultan Sarieph, named Johannes Kleijn from The Hague, who declared and confessed that in the year 1776, as a sailor earning 9 guilders per month, he sailed out with the ship Mars for the Chamber of Zeeland and thus arrived at Batavia, where he was subsequently assigned to the ship Blijswijk destined for Ambon, which was shipwrecked close to Saleyer, and the surviving crew, having been saved by the Resident and subsequently sent to Macassar, among which number the declarant also found himself; and that, having arrived at Macassar, he performed his service as temporary assistant or helper with the artillery, and at the same time instructed the children of the Lieutenant Pilaat; that the declarant, in the year 1780, everything being in peace and quiet, being merry one day in the Bugis kampong, was made drunk by sagoweer, being a certain beverage, and suffered the fate of several others, both military men and sailors, and was taken by the Bugis in a prahu and further to Bugis territory, which, having become sober, he could not resist and had to comfort himself in his misfortune; that, having been there for about eighteen months, the declarant quietly slipped away with a vessel departing for Riau, in the hope of finding an Englishman there, as he had heard this nation traded heavily there; but having arrived there, to his regret, the requested assistance was refused to him by an Englishman, with the addition that a merchant was afraid of Raja Haji, in which distressing circumstances the declarant remained for about four more months, and seeing no way out, bound himself to an Arab named Sheikh Mosketti, who promised to care for the declarant as for his own child; whereupon they set their course from Riau to Sambas, and having arrived there after a few days, it was made known to the declarant at the last-mentioned place by the subjects of Sultan Sarieph that there were Europeans in Pontiana; having heard this, he immediately made himself ready to travel thither with those people, leaving the aforementioned Sheikh Mosketti behind in Sambas. Hereupon, the declarant was duly examined by the assistant surgeon mentioned in the heading of this document as commissioner and was found not to be circumcised.
