By a vessel now departing by sea, I have the honor to present to Your Right Honorable, in a sealed chest, two sets of trade ledgers of this office for the year 1785/7, accompanied by two short statement accounts prepared from the aforementioned trade ledgers and two yields arranged according to the new improved model, from all of which Your Right Honorable will be pleased to observe that the net profits achieved at this office in the past financial year amounted to ƒ 6721: 18: -, and against this the incurred charges were ƒ 2933: 13: 8, so that this office in the past year came out ahead by a sum of ƒ 3788: 4: 8. In addition to the 200 taels of gold recently sent over, 150:-:- taels of this mineral, unsmelted, have since been received; I very humbly request that it may please Your Right Honorable to send a vessel here to collect it, so that it may be smelted before the departure of the ship de Standvastigheid and made ready for transport to Batavia; and as it appears from the accompanying memorandum that I have no more cash in the treasury, and virtually no arrack and rice in stock for the distribution of rations, I further very humbly request that I may also be supplied by that same opportunity with the cash, provisions, and necessities petitioned for in the accompanying requisition, together with such packages of linen as have been brought by the ship de Standvastigheid for this office, and as much salt as can be loaded into it. The soldier Johan Godfried Ketter of Vreeland, having completed his contracted term of service as shown by the accompanying certificate, most humbly petitions Your Right Honorable to obtain his release to the main settlement of Batavia with the ship de Standvastigheid, in which case I very humbly request that he may be replaced by another European soldier. The corporal in command at the post at Aijerhadje having sent here a Buginese soldier named Soema, who deserted from the said post in the month of May last, but voluntarily returned in the past month of November, and to whom the said corporal, in the hope of Your Right Honorable's favorable approval, disbursed the usual board money and rations for this current month; I very humbly request that this latter action, on account of the extreme destitution in which this Buginese found himself upon his return and because he has served since that time, may be favorably approved by Your Right Honorable, and that I may further be provided with Your Right Honorable's esteemed orders as to how he should be punished for his desertion and whether the weapons that went missing during his desertion must be reimbursed by him. Yesterday, the aforementioned Sultan himself having arrived here pursuant to Your Right Honorable's summons, I first attempted, by asking several questions ostensibly arising out of mere curiosity about everything that occurred at Moco Moco and the actions and present circumstances of the young warring Sultan, to see whether I could not discover something that would have given a legitimate ground for the accusation that Mr. Peirse has brought against him, but here too nothing appeared to me that could be brought to his charge, for he maintains To the Right Honorable Sir! To the Same as Above A few days before the return here of the two Padang Penghulus, Radja Lingang and Bagindo Radja, who had been commissioned to inspect the pepper gardens, the corporal stationed at Aijerhadje informed me that a tambangan bearing an English flag had put into Indrapoura and that he had thereupon immediately departed thither with a Bugis to investigate the matter and to make it depart again, but since the sultan had told him that he had no authority there, and that the guarding and keeping of the rivers and beaches in his land had been entrusted and commended solely to him, the sultan, by Your Honorable Nobility, he, the corporal, had found himself compelled, in order not to get into difficulties with the sultan, to return home with business unaccomplished. Having subsequently inquired into this matter with the abovementioned two Padang Penghulus, Bagindo Radja said, in the presence of Radja Lingang and several other Malays from here, without being contradicted by the latter, that it was true that during his stay at Aijerhadje a tambangan bound from Bencoolen for Poulo Page had been forced by contrary winds to put in there, and had still been there upon his departure; but that the sultan had instructed him to tell me that he would bring this vessel here himself, for the reason that the stationed corporal had been prevented by the sultan from inquiring into the cargo of that tambangan, and since those two Penghulus who had been present were better able to give a report thereof, I instructed them to report on this themselves to Your Honorable Nobility upon their return to the Coast, for I was quite certain that even if the sultan brought that tambangan here, matters would already have been so prepared by him in advance that I would not be able to get to the real truth, as the outcome now convinces me, since I have not been able to get anything else out of the Nakhoda who is now here with that tambangan, other than that, having departed from Bencoolen for Poulo Page with a cargo consisting only of: 18 pieces of ordinary bleached Guinea cloth, rejects or spotted 40 strings of English beads he had been forced by contrary winds to put into Indrapoura, that he had wanted to continue his voyage from there, but that the sultan, who had just then been summoned to Poulo Chinco and had no vessel ready himself, had requested him to lend him his vessel for that voyage; furthermore, that he had not disposed of anything anywhere of the small cargo he had brought along, and intended, as soon as he had brought the sultan back, to depart with it for Poulo Page. I therefore very humbly request Your Honorable Nobility's highly esteemed orders, whether I may permit the sultan to return home with this vessel, or whether I shall send the same with its Nakhoda up to the Coast. Meanwhile, I have made known to the sultan of Indrapoura in the most emphatic terms Your Honorable Nobility's indignation at such perfidious conduct of which he is accused, and threatened him with the punishment that the Company shall see fit to inflict upon him for such violations of the contracts. Upon receiving report that a prahu kolek had entered the river of Baijang, coming from Benkoulen and belonging to a Baijang Malay named Radja Dare, and that the same had brought along as passengers three Chinese from Bencoulen, in addition to two women and a child, I immediately sent two Buginese soldiers thither, providing them with a letter to the Penghulus of that settlement, in which I warned them to keep the aforementioned kolek with its cargo and passengers in secure custody until further orders from Your Right Honourable Sir, or else, should they not find themselves able to do so, to transport this vessel and the people brought over with it to this place under the supervision and guard of those two Buginese soldiers. However, those Penghulus of Baijang cared little about this, and and instead rather permitted a riotous mob that had banded together, among whom were even the two Penghulus Makoedoeng and Jan Pongoulou, to take this vessel and the Chinese directly under their protection, and helped the latter to launch the same into the water in the sight of those Buginese, telling them that they had to leave that place immediately, for the Resident of Chinco had nothing to command them. When it was represented to the other Penghulus by those Buginese that, by permitting all this violence, they would make themselves liable to punishment before the Honourable Company, they excused themselves by saying that it was beyond their power to resist it, for Radja Dare had many close relatives and a large following in the settlement, and they feared that a general riot would be stirred up by them if they wished to send this vessel to Chinco in accordance with my requisition; nevertheless, they did not even deign to answer my letter sent to them. According to the suspicion of the Buginese, this vessel has set its course northwards; of the Chinese aboard it, they can only state the name of Bappa Jong, with his wife and a small daughter. The Malays who brought them over are named: Radja Daret of Baijang Silewe of the same Malim Poeti of the same Parmata Alam of Kinarie. I

To the same as before The day before yesterday, via Baijang, Your Honorable's highly respected letter of the 29th ultimo was brought here, and having perceived from it that it has pleased Your Honorable to provisionally approve the recently sent Price Current of the linens brought by the ship De Standvastigheid for this office, with authorization to surrender the same to the native population for the prices offered for them, I shall regulate myself accordingly in the sale of those cloths; and I shall also take as a dutiful instruction Your Honorable's esteemed recommendation to demand henceforth, on account of the meager profits derived from them, no more gerras or armozeens than are strictly necessary for the convenience of the native population, and to prevent them from seeking the same in other places; for which reason the gerras were already excused in the most recently dispatched requisition for Poulo Chinco. While I have the honor, pursuant to Your Honorable's esteemed order, to report that since the departure of the ship De Standvastigheid, the collection made here consists of circa 100 thails of unrefined gold, 17000 lb of black winnowed pepper, and 2670 lb of sappanwood. 164 Having been informed by the Sultan of Indrapoura, both through a Malay letter and from the verbal reports of a minister expressly dispatched hither by him for that purpose, that about 150 persons had arrived in his land, among whom were 40 men and the remainder women and children, being according to the aforementioned verbal as well as written statement for the most part formerly subjects of him, the Sultan, but who had from time to time departed to the land of the Sultan of Moeo Moeo, and now, on account of the helpless state in which they were left by the last-mentioned Sultan during his disputes with his son, had found themselves compelled to return to their native land. Right Honourable Sir, Having been informed this evening by a note from the post-holding corporal at Aijerhadje that a Dutch Company ship was off Indrapoura, I have the honour to inform Your Right Honourable of this as soon as possible, while sending a letter from the officer commanding thereon, addressed to Your Right Honourable. From the note which he sent to me, it only appeared to me that the name of the above-mentioned ship is the Cornelia Adriana, and that of the commanding officer thereon Christiaan Reepslaeger, but from the verbal reports of the bearer of this, who has been on board this ship, I have further understood that the same had been destined from Batavia to Timor, but had not been able to make that voyage, that its captain was deceased, the ship was very leaky, and the officer now commanding thereon found himself compelled to steer with the same toward Padang and to request Your Right Honourable for assistance. Awaiting Your Right Honourable's most esteemed orders, I shall provisionally send a native vessel from here to meet the frequently mentioned ship, in order to show the same the passage to this roadstead. I formerly acquainted you I know nothing more regarding the transaction alluded to but from the gentlemen of this place, being myself absent and at Marlbro. To convince you Messrs. Perroot and Lightburn have mistated the affair of the benjamin to you, I enclose you the oath of Lieutenant Lewis, which you will find clear and determinate regarding the quality of the benjamin and the marks, etc. In addition thereto, I will acquaint you with the real state of the facts related to me here. Dion Chumpah had been very useful to the gentlemen here, at, and some time after the capture of Tappanoly, and they wished on that account to shew him some favour. He represented they could not serve him more than by assisting him with 100 chests of benjamin, which he was to dispose of to the best advantage and to return to Natal with an assortment of merchandise calculated for the place; any profit arising from this venture was to be for his, Chumpah's, benefit. After I had clearly informed myself from him as to the true circumstances of this benzoin, he passed an affidavit to me that this benzoin was never sold to Tjampa nor paid for by him, but was delivered to him with the intention as Your Honor had informed me by letter.
