From Surat, the 20th April Anno 1756 Batavia To the same as aforesaid: Although the hope is that the ship Visvliet will have arrived at the place of Your High Excellencies' Residence long before the arrival of this letter, and that our original reply to Your High Excellencies' successive esteemed letters, dated the 2nd of the past month, together with the separate letter from the Director and Second of the same date, will have been received with it, we accompany this with the duplicates of the same, whereby we hope to have the honor to render Your High Excellencies a complete report of what has been executed and has occurred here since our last formal description from 25th April of last year to the ultimate of March of this year in and with respect to the Company's services and interests, along with what must further necessarily be treated on this occasion, insofar as no mention of the former has already been made in our aforesaid recent and earlier letters of 22nd May and 25th December Anno passato, among which some points will appear to Your High Excellencies that ought to have been discussed earlier, but we request that Your High Excellencies, according to your usual benevolence, please consider regarding this that it was not possible for the first undersigned, in the short time of his presence before the departure of the ship Visvliet, to check the records in order to find the necessary light concerning matters of whose occurrence he had not the least knowledge or which he imagined had already been dealt with; whereupon having excused ourselves, we shall, concerning the ships, in the first place note: That the aforesaid vessel Visvliet, as well as 't Huijs te Boede, Middelburg, and Lapienenburg mentioned in the secret advices of the first two undersigned, having received their boats and sloops on board only on the 5th due to tempestuous weather, weighed anchor on the same day and left this roadstead; furthermore, that the three last-mentioned vessels arrived safely at Dendarajapour on the 8th ultimo. Having received on 27th July last a letter addressed to us by Captain-Lieutenant Hendrik Swart from Bombay on the 12th prior, for the communication that the rudder of his vessel, 't Huijs ten Duijnen, had broken on 27th June, at the estimated Northern Pole altitude of 15 degrees and 34 minutes, in a severe storm, which he had already encountered at 6 degrees and had remained with him until 2nd July, and the mainmast having sustained a large cross-fracture four feet higher than the upper deck, as well as, in addition, having suffered two severe leaks, through which the water rushed into the powder magazine like a sluice without it being possible to remedy this due to the terribly high sea, the officers had found themselves compelled to enter the harbor of Bombay, where, having been provided with the necessary supplies, as we have understood, they continued their voyage to Karreek in the month of October. The ship Lapienenburg was, as appears from our resolution of 29th October of last year, detained by us to serve for the trade in Bassijn as long as one still had some hope of being able to resume it; and what obstacles were encountered after the arrival of the present Director, in an early dispatch of that vessel and its two aforementioned traveling companions, sought by us with the utmost zeal and through all possible ways and means, has already been reported to Your High Excellencies in such detail in the aforementioned separate letter from the first two undersigned, that a repetition thereof in this seems superfluous; wherefore, with respect to the matter, we shall only further report the measures that were taken with relation to that vessel, consisting in this: that at the mentioned session of 12th November, being somewhat alarmed by the conduct displayed for some time by the regents toward us, of which further mention is to be made in the proper place, and considering the great embarrassment for cash money

From Surat, the 20th of April, Anno 1756. For cash to pay off their troops, a want from which both the Castle and City Governors suffered, the apprehension in which they found themselves that the blockade of the city would be converted into a formal siege, and the considerable quantity of returns we had on hand, which could easily kindle greed, prudence was judged to demand, and we therefore resolved to ship off as much of it as would be in any way possible, and since the three present ships still had their ballast in, to transfer it from Marienbosch, Luxemburg, and Lapienenburg, as it was also not deemed safe, under the prevailing circumstances, to bring ashore the copper, iron, etc., which we had intended to retain here. But the danger of a siege having remarkably diminished in the latter part of that month through the news received from the Deccan, it was thought fit at the session of the 1st of December to have a portion of the transshipped copper brought ashore, which was accordingly effected. Fearing to divert Your Right Honourable's kind attention too long from weightier matters, we shall not enter into a broad detail of some domestic and other orders concerning the ships conforming to regulations, which may be seen circumstantially in our resolutions of the 29th of October, 10th of November, 1st and 18th of December of the past year, and the 5th of January of this year, and of which we only deem it necessary to mention in this that: Requested supplies for the ships Luxemburg, Lapienenburg, and Marienbosch were furnished, beyond the pitch requisitioned for the first two named vessels, of which there was no stock. Among these were two brass culverins from the ship Bloemendaal given to Lapienenburg, as the two pieces of cannon placed in the cabin of that vessel, according to the testimony of our Master of Equipage, were so short that they could not possibly be used without greatly damaging the stern, and to Marienbosch the necessary catjang for the voyage, since it was not provided with it at India's headquarters, and Captain De Neijs, in our opinion not unjustly, maintained that he could not dispense with that provision for the crew. All the vessels on hand having been inspected and examined in the month of July last by specially appointed seafaring commissioners to determine what equipment, artillery, and other goods were necessary to be furnished to them in place of unserviceable ones or otherwise, a detailed report concerning this was submitted at our session of the 26th of the aforesaid month, which was inserted in the aforesaid resolution of that date. After resumption thereof, we resolved to have the necessary repairs and supplies made to the same with a frugal hand, except for the sprit-sail vessel Batavia, concerning which Your Right Honourable's authorization was first awaited; which, as far as we have been able to ascertain, was also essentially done. For which reason we resolved at the session of the 27th of January to pass the same account, amounting to a sum of f16,921:1:-, subject to the approval of Your Right Honourable, in consideration of the heavy and continuous voyages as well as the frequent damage suffered by the vessels and their rigging in the past book year, as mentioned in our successive letters, and especially that of May last. Of these, the hooker De Jonge Jacob was sent on a voyage to Cutch-Mandvi in October to transport grains, at the request of the Raja and the Company's broker there, on account of a great famine that had arisen there due to a two-year drought. It returned on the 25th of November with cotton, and on the 26th of February was sent thither again in company with the battila De Voorn, which belongs there, with the merchandise projected for that trading post according to the demand received, alongside a bale of silk for which the Raja had requested transport, so that it is expected back from there any day, unless the last-named vessel could still be spared there, regarding which we have demanded reports from the servants. From Souratta, the 20th of April, Anno 1756 Voyages with the smalschip De Jonge Susanna and other vessels made three voyages in the months of December and January to Brootchia to fetch return goods, the first voyage in the company of the war galvat De Waaksaamheid and the Battela, and the second and third with the said galvat and the decked horij De Lastdrager, after which, at the request of the city governor and the brokers, it was employed to convoy some vessels belonging to them destined for Sinde, with which, having departed from these roads in the company of De Jonge Jacob, that small vessel is also expected back within a few days. Meanwhile, in March, De Lastdrager and the also decked horij De Uijtwinner were sent again to Brootchia to fetch return goods, in company with De Waaksaamheid, the small galvat De Sultanpoerse Coelie, and the open horij De Broodrot, along with some hired vessels under their escort destined for Iamboeser to fetch cotton, all of which returned hither at the same time, except for one large hired horij with cotton belonging to the brokers, which, having a deep draft, became grounded at high water in the river of the latter mentioned place and had to be partly unloaded before it could be refloated. To retrieve this, along with the remaining cotton and some merchandise of the brokers that were at Iamboeser, upon receiving news that the governor of Cambais, Noevelij Moemetchan, 79 a Souratta, the 20th of April, Anno 1756 Batavia repaired had taken that place, which belongs to the Marathas, by surprise, two horijs hired by the brokers were sent thither again on the 22nd of the same month under convoy of both galvats and the Company's three horijs, all armed as well as possible, which at the same time, in passing, also escorted three hired horijs to Brootchia to load the cotton. They were ordered, on the return voyage, to remain lying off the Brootchia river, except for De Lastdrager and De Uijtwinner, which entered inside to fetch a cargo of return goods for India and to escort the horijs with cotton out to sea, from where the combined fleet must return back hither. The repair, or rather the renewal, of the smalschip Batavia has been finished these days, and it has been done so firmly and strongly that, barring unforeseen accidents, the Company will be able to have at least another eight years of service from it. This also indicates that in preferring the repair of that vessel over its disposal and the construction of a new one in its place, to which one would not have dared to proceed without Your High Excellencies' explicit authorization, the best course was chosen, although it does not agree with the opinion of the commissioners for the inspection of that vessel, upon which we relied in our letter of the 22nd of May of the past year. From Souratta, the 20th of April, Anno 1756 Two hired horijs taken by the pirates Recovered pursuant to agreement made For the sums mentioned in the text In continuation of what was communicated in our respectful letters of the 25th of April of last year regarding two hired horijs taken near Diu on the voyage to Ketsmandvi, we have the honour to report: that having considered in our session of the 10th of March 1755 that the vessels had been rented to us under the explicit condition that the Company would have them convoyed on the outward and return voyages and would secure and protect them against all encounters with pirates, without which condition, both because of the danger of the fairway and the prevalence of pirates even in the Gulf of Kets, no vessels were to be obtained, we decided to have the one, which had been carried off by the Sanganian pirates, ransomed by the Mandvi factors for the lowest price possible, and to have the other, which was seized by the Sultanpore Coolies but recaptured by the vessels of Sidi Saban, bought free here. The latter indeed succeeded for a sum of f 1050:-. However, all efforts made by the Mandvi servants to obtain the restitution of the first having proved fruitless, the owner attempted this by another path with the prior knowledge and consent of the retired Director, Mr. De Roth, and finally achieved his objective in the autumn for a sum of f 2250:- which we consequently, in the session of the 26th of February last, decided to have the factor hand over to the native employed for that purpose, as well as 81

From Surat, the 20th of April, Anno 1756. Disposition on the delivered cargo of the ship Bloemendaal in Mocha. Item on that of the said vessel upon its arrival here, and on the delivered cargo of Marienbosch, Luxemburg, and Papienenburg. that the said ƒ1050 be charged to the account of merchandise expenses. Concerning the delivered cargoes; first came up our resolution of the 20th of September of the past year for the write-off of the shortfalls on the delivered cargo of Bloemendaal in Mocha, consisting of only 3 per cent on the powdered sugar, 3 7/80 per cent on the cloves, and 4 1/2 per cent on the nutmegs, provided that the cargadoors properly take the oath of clearance regarding the spices, which was subsequently carried out, as shown by what was noted in our resolutions of the 18th of December and the 28th of this month. At the first-mentioned session, a finding having also been submitted concerning the cargo delivered here from the said vessel, it was decided upon according to the tenor of the Regulations, and consequently understood that the ship's officers be charged in account with the found underweight of 9 1/12 per cent on the sapanwood and 1 3/4 per cent on the gum myrrh above the permitted write-offs, and on the other hand to credit them with the amount thereof on the iron and spelter, for which they had accounted for the full weight. Likewise, at the session of the 15th of October, deciding on the findings of the delivered cargoes of Marienbosch and From Surat, the 20th of April, Anno 1756. Regarding the spices, the lead, the steel, etc., the beer, the cloths, and the velvet. and Luxemburg, alongside some discharged goods from Papienenburg, it was approved to pass the shortfalls on the spices, amounting on Marienbosch, for the cloves, to 7 per cent, for the nutmegs, to 10 per cent, Luxemburg, for the cloves, to 6/8 per cent, for the nutmegs, to 8 per cent, Papienenburg, for the cloves, to 1/4 per cent, for the nutmegs, to 9 3/8 per cent, provided that the usual oath of clearance was taken by the ship's officers, which was properly performed, as evidenced by what was noted in our resolution of the 7th of March last; furthermore, to charge the ship's officers of Marienbosch in account for 7/2 per cent on the lead, and those of Luxemburg for 1/4 per cent on the steel, found to be deficient in excess of what may be validated according to the Regulations; on the other hand, to have them credited for the lesser amount of the shortfalls on various goods below the permitted write-offs; to write off four barrels of Anker beer from Marienbosch and four barrels of Swaans beer from Luxemburg, brought in sour and spoiled, as evidenced by secretarial declarations among the annexes to this; furthermore, to have counterbalanced in the books 5 pieces of red cloth in a case No. 6 received by Marienbosch, in place of which 5 pieces of black cloth were found; three pieces of Dutch velvet and two pieces of cloth brought by Luxemburg, alongside three pieces of cloth by Papienenburg, very creased, stained, and damaged by moth, From Surat, the 20th of April, Anno 1756. The native resin, the benzoin, and the Japanese bar and plate copper. being unfit for presentation as gifts, to be sold at public auction to prevent further decay; as for the rest, all the native resin from Marienbosch and Luxemburg was transshipped into Papienenburg and remained there, as it can currently not be sold here for anywhere near the cost price, and there is no room in the warehouses to let such voluminous goods lie; and since 1079 lb of ordinary white benzoin in 12 bundles was listed on the invoice of Papienenburg, and the ship's officers had indeed delivered that number of packages, but containing 959 1/2 lb of black benzoin, besides two loose pieces of white benzoin weighing 17 lb, it was resolved to demand a written explanation from Captain Lieutenant Zillkens in this regard; which, having arrived at our session of the 5th of January, we deemed satisfactory, and thereupon decided to leave the matter at rest pending Your Right Honourables' further disposition, but in the meantime to charge the ship's officers in account at purchase price for the additional shortfall found beyond what may be validated according to the Regulations. Since our previous report, another 244 packages have arrived, whereas only 206 are now lacking in total from the quota of this head factory, which we hope will be completely delivered inside before the departure of the last ship. Because of the exorbitant prices that, as appears from our resolution of 22 September and 10 October, continued to be demanded at the factory of Ahmedabad for the chintzes, cotton patolas, tapekankanias, as well as the unbleached or blue and white cloths, it was resolved in the last-mentioned session to refrain entirely from putting the same out to tender there, as a result of which only 20 packages in total fell to the share of this factory, which are completely fulfilled. However, it was deemed fair and therefore approved to relieve the merchants of 96 corgies of white linen which they had caused to be made in stock in the hope that a contract would be made, since they were offered at passable prices, namely: those of 18 wiesa or 1440 threads at rupees 147½ or f 215 the corgie or the twenty pieces ditto 16 ditto 1280 ditto at rupees 110. f 165 ditto ditto 14 ditto 1220 ditto at rupees 102½ f 153:15 ditto and to contract for the preparation at rupees 7 or f 10:10 per piece. Yet because one cannot obtain large quantities in that manner without it becoming known and having an even more disadvantageous effect, and the hope that one had to obtain a part of the required 3000 bales in Brootchia disappeared upon the receipt of a letter from the factors, containing that everything that was to be had there had already been bought up in small parcels by the English together with the Company's brokers and suppliers for ƒ195:- the candil, and nothing more of those wares was to be obtained for money, since the severe drought, through want of rain, had completely burned the new crop in the field, one was obliged in January last to resolve to conclude a contract here with the Company's brokers at the aforesaid high price of ƒ204:15:- the candil, without stipulation of quantity, whereto they were absolutely not to be moved out of fear of not being able to procure more than one thousand bales, and provided that one should have that wool fetched on the Company's behalf, without their expense, from Brootchia and Jamboesier, or from such other of the sea places in the gulf as they should specify. From Surat, 28 April Anno 1756 Text scarcity of the radx pootjoek could be bargained for at that price, of which only 315 have arrived, as cotton in that region likewise grew daily more expensive and scarce due to a lack of rain; on which account the factors had deemed it advisable to accept a good quantity which the brokers had purchased this year, and the net amount of which they could not yet state for reasons as given in the, at f 187:10: the candy, but because that cotton with the expenses would come to stand at nearly f 215: —, which is a very unheard-of price for that sort, we have, for those and further reasons to be seen in our resolutions of 25 October, decided to disapprove that purchase and leave it for their own account. We thought proper to retrench several items therefrom that were entirely unknown in previous specifications, and to reduce some others that had been taken too high, in such manner that the first-mentioned remained at only ƒ 2316:4:8, the second at ƒ 178:12:8, and the last at ƒ 1628:4:8. Against which the said De Bellon, in accordance with his interests, submitted arguments that are cited in our resolution of the 22nd of September; however, we deemed that our part ought not to defer so much thereto as to proceed to any alteration of the said decision, although we have no reason to suspect that the said De Bellon profited himself in the least thereby, or did not truly disburse what was charged, having been misled according to the circumstances by the Company's brokers, who seem to have magnified somewhat broadly the necessity of the extraordinary disbursements made in order to avoid all misfortunes of plundering, fire of the caffila, and danger to his life. Wherefore we could not refuse to present to Your High Nobilities, alongside this letter, a request addressed to the same by the said De Bellon to obtain a favorable decision in this regard, with two From Souratta, the 28th of April, Anno 1756.
