A specification from the Commissioner Croonenberg. amounting to ƒ 9183:4:8, passed under approval. remitted to the brethren Deacons at Batavia, with and in addition to ƒ 12:15: for that stolen from the ship Bloemendael. The attorneys of the Lady Widow of the late Right Honourable Member of the Extraordinary Council of India Pecock having requested of us to be allowed to borrow a sum of ƒ 3000 from the Company's treasury, in order to be paid to her Honour at Batavia by bill of exchange, we did not dare accept more than ƒ 1500 of this, in accordance with your high respected letter of the 9th of October of the past year, the remaining drawn bills of exchange since the end of March 1755 until the end of March In the year 1756 being limited to only 1: on the Netherlands to the amount of ƒ 525:14:-. 9: on the High Capital of the Indies, mounting to 85073:5:-. ƒ 85598:19:-. and from other outposts none have been drawn on us. Regarding the aforementioned mission to Bassein and the Court of Poona, and the outcome of the same, the necessary having already been briefly cited in previous public and secret letters, it only remains to be communicated that we, at the meeting of the 7th of March last, passed, subject to your Right Honourable's esteemed approval, a specification of extraordinary expenses incurred by the Commissioner Kroonenberg, both at Bassein and during the journey up to Poona, at Poona itself, during the journey down to Bassein, and from there to Surat, amounting to ƒ 9183:4:8, since he necessarily had to incur the same From Surat The 20th of April In the year 1756. After we had for some time with great longing looked out for certain tidings concerning the outcome of the mission undertaken to Danda Rajpuri: mentioned at large in the separate letter of the two first undersigned of the 2nd of March last, and this one in the meantime having already been brought this far in preparation, we not only received on the 10th of this month a letter written by the Commissioner Kroonenbergh to the Director and given along with an envoy of the prince Jacootchan, dated the 27th of the same month, but also on the 14th and 15th current, his further advices of the 2nd and 4th previously with the ships Middelburg and 't Huijs te Boede, of which the copies, as well as his kept Daily Register, are transmitted as enclosures to the secret advices sent home from the Director and second in command, and which principally contain that our ships having arrived on the 8th of March on the outer roads of that place, the Commissioner could not immediately obtain permission to From Surat The 20th of April In the year 1756. And notwithstanding the agitations of the English. graciously treated by the prince. already a portion of the trade goods sold. to enter the harbour, because the letters sent by the correspondents of the Deccan merchants present here to announce the arrival of our ships had not arrived properly, so His Highness was as it were surprised by them; yet this was granted by him after the lapse of four days in a very gracious manner, notwithstanding the agitations of the English gentlemen, who, seeing that their scheme to bar us from the Deccan trade would be entirely foiled by a good success of that enterprise, made an express deputation from Bombay to persuade the prince by promises and threats to interdict trade in his land to us, which had not the slightest effect, because His Highness on the contrary had seven of his own war gallivats employed for the unloading of the ships, and granted ours all possible liberties, not desiring that any listing or inspection of the brought cargoes take place, but undertaking to settle with the Commissioner in person regarding the toll, without the intervention of any of the subordinate regents; that the merchandise having already been largely turned into money, the Commissioner provisionally remitted seventy-five thousand rupees in bills of exchange, negotiated at two percent loss, to be paid here in Bombay rupees, which have been accepted by the drawn exchangers, all except one of

From Surat, the 28th of April Anno 1756. A speedy sale of the remnants. Also, Lapienenburg will receive a cargo of rice, ordered by the prince to the castle governor in Surat. Importance of Danda Rajapore for trade. of one thousand rupees on a certain Ballagieram, who has received no advice from the drawer in that regard, and ten thousand rupees sent over in cash; that the merchants came down from the Deccan day by day, and therefore there was good prospect, notwithstanding our English friends, as soon as they had received a refusal from the prince, put all their wares at low prices in order by that means to divert the merchants from us, of selling off the remaining trade goods before the breaking of the rainy season, to which the prince contributed not a little by granting the merchants various prerogatives and having such proclaimed everywhere; that the commissioner, despite the passing of time, still flattered himself that he would obtain the necessary rice for the loading of the ship Lapienenburg, which was already in part, because the prince, although the export of grain was otherwise an illicit matter there, had promised to lend him a helping hand to that end; and that His Highness, not content with these public tokens of friendship, had furthermore recommended to the governor of the Surat Castle, who is a subordinate of his, to maintain a sincere friendship with the present Director, and to undertake nothing of importance except in mutual consultation; and lastly that this Danda Rajapore is not only situated even better than Bassein for traffic in the Deccan, or with the merchants coming down from there, but in addition, according to the unanimous opinion of the naval officers, is a splendid harbor in which the ships can winter with complete safety, as Your High Excellencies, if it pleases you, will see confirmed in more detail by a report and a chart annexed thereto, handed over to us by Sea Captain Boudewijn Moole, and to be found among the enclosures to this, as well as two copies of letters received from the prince, and the draft reply of the Director, to be dispatched upon the return of His Highness's envoy. From Surat, the 28th of April, Anno 1756. Board wages and rations of the soldiers and sailors prolonged on the old footing until the first of April. The domestic matters which have not already been treated here before under other main sections and are worthy of a special citation in this, consist only of the following; namely: The decision taken in our session of the 2nd of last month to allow the provisions of ordinary and extra board wages and rations to the common soldiers and sailors, on account of the continuing dearness of provisions, to proceed on the previous footing until the first of this month, which we hope Your High Excellencies will graciously accommodate, as it was strictly necessary in order not to make those people suffer want, and by an untimely execution of the orders on this point not to give cause for such consequences as were nonetheless seen to result when it was finally deemed time to proceed with it, and which, although acted upon before the eyes of the entire Council, we have reserved for the separate letter of the two first undersigned for reasons that are sufficiently plain from the nature of the matter. The drafting of a regulation for the servants at Cutch Mandvi on the footing of Broach, pursuant to our decision of the 15th of June Anno 1755, on account of the repeated complaints of the factors regarding the impossibility of subsisting, which was incorporated by Resolution of the 24th of July following. The authorization granted to the servants of that factory, in accordance with the special permission of the Raja, to fly the Company's flag from the residence of the factors, and to that end to requisition the necessary materials from here, according to our decisions of the 22nd of September and 21st of October of the past year. The making of the necessary changes and expansions in the instructions for the ships at the Surat roadstead, in view of the altered state of affairs and further orders received concerning some points, in our session of the 19th of August Anno 1755. That of the 5th of January last to authorize the administrators, the Master of Equippage, and the Dispensier, in view of the then exorbitant dearness of foodstuffs and other necessities, which it was hoped would soon diminish somewhat, for the present to deliver the requirements in their administration at the market price, but without charging the usual commission of five per cent thereon, and, on account of a lack of arrack, to purchase two leagers at the lowest price that could be

The English gentlemen of this place, having at their head a certain Mr. Ellis, being the very same who, at the time that he was Resident on behalf of their Company in Bassora, gave such convincing proofs of the good heart that he bears toward the Dutch, and of his desire and readiness to cultivate mutual friendship and harmony, by assisting the Turkish Governor with word and deed in the acts of violence and vexations to which our people at that time became subjected, are at present, because of the news of the success of their arms against the Angrians, more than ever spared and courted by From Souratta, the 28th April Anno 1756. The shroff Narrendas Laaldas having died, his brother Sieuwdas Laaldas has succeeded him as the Company's assayer of money. At the request of the officers of the ships Leekenburg, Lapienenburg, and Middelburg, we have provided each of them with a crew of 50 instead of 25 Moorish sailors, as they assured us that they genuinely needed that number for the daily ship's work, and we maintained that in such cases we might well deviate from what was ordered regarding this in Your High Excellencies' respected letter of the 20th of August 1754, the more so since we were in uncertainty whether the disabled men from the last-mentioned vessel, to the number of 26 in the hospital, will indeed have convalesced before its dispatch. From Surat, dated 20th April A:o 1756 could or would bind, and preferred to sleep at night in the villages on the other side of the river, so it happened almost daily that the servants of the Governor came to demand a smaller or larger number of workmen from the mody, whom one could not flatly refuse, but had to consider oneself fortunate if one could repeatedly keep the people together and at work by means of a present, although this did not always succeed and one was frequently, however reluctantly and in the thickest of the labor, forced to yield the demanded number of workmen for fear of worse. Also, both high and low servants of the Durbar and the Castle, together with many of the principal and most distinguished inhabitants, as well as some qualified foreigners, especially the Priests, both Moorish and Heathen from time to time, but the priests almost daily, came to inspect the work, whereupon the mody, in order not to bring any base shame upon the Dutch Nation, could not avoid entertaining them according to the custom of the country with Betel and rosewater, and to give the first and last mentioned, according as their station required and one had more or less need of them, presents in addition, in order thus to keep them friendly; there having also been found on the Company's yard, from the day that the work was resumed until the revetment was completely finished, both from the Castle Governor and from the deputy governor Alij nawaaschan, a body servant and some peons of each as continual supervisors, whom the mody was forced to pay and to give to each twice as much as they otherwise earned. The same applies to the strong liquor that was provided to the workmen in rainy weather and when the cold made them cramp, both day and night.
