By the ships Bloemendaal on the 30th of September, Marienbosch on the 3rd, and Luxemburg on the 17th of October last, we had the honour of receiving, from the hands of Sea Captain Willem Marchis and Captain-Lieutenants Cornelis de Nijs and Adriaan de Graaff, Your High Excellencies' revered letters of the 10th and 20th of August prior, along with all their enclosures. We thank Your High Excellencies 6 No. 12. From Surat, the 4th of January, anno 1755. most humbly for the early dispatch and considerable cargo of the said vessels, which were also successfully unloaded, after proper satisfaction was first given through a public and state visit, which the deputy Ali-nawaaschan paid on the 5th of October at the house of the Director on behalf of the city governor Saffderchan, for the affront committed against the Honourable Company and described more fully in our Resolution of the 4th of September. We were particularly pleased to learn of the promotion of the Right Honourable Lord Jeremias van Riemsdijk to Extraordinary Councillor of the Indies, with which eminent charge we have the honour hereby to congratulate His Right Honour, while expressing our humble gratitude for Your High Excellencies' favourable communication, as we likewise show our due acknowledgement for the approval of the construction of a new hoeker named the Jonge Jacob, together with the chartering of the ghurab de Hoop, of the gifts account, of the expenses for the vessels, and of the purchase both of the garden of the departed Director Pecock and of the two galbats, the use that we make of these Surat, the 4th of January, anno 1755. latter being recorded each time by Resolution. Furthermore, we thank Your High Excellencies for the communication of the copy dispatches written to Ceylon, Malabar, Coromandel, and Bengal under the dates of 31 August and 15 November of last year, as well as 9 June and 11 July of this year, their contents being used for guidance and, insofar as applicable, obediently carried out. The claim of the absconded warehouse keeper Willem van Laar will be examined anew, and as many Persians and Arabs as possible will be taken into service on the prescribed terms, we having entrusted that commission to the Fiscal David Kellij during our session of the 19th of October last, just as we also took a decision on the 5th of the aforementioned month to have all weights and measures calibrated twice a year following the example of Batavia; we shall also henceforth always observe sealing the letters, putting the invoices along with the bills of lading in separate envelopes, and holding no more annual festivities at the expense of the Honourable Company. Passing herewith to the answering of the folio 9. Surat, the 4th of January, anno 1755. It is to be hoped that the profit account, which in the past financial year, due to the supply of a [illegible] of Cochin-China, cannot match that of previous years, nevertheless will not be unpleasant this year, and we trust, under Heaven's blessing, to be able to give Your Right Honourable Excellencies more satisfaction regarding this point, especially when matters in Basra, which has changed from a pirate stronghold to a trading post for the Honourable Company, are truly underway. Regarding the matter of the extracts from the Motherland concerning the affairs of Surat, we have the honour to insert them here. The Memoir left by the departing Director Schreuder to his successor, we have read with pleasure, both on account of its writing style, although here and there a little long-winded, and especially on account of its substance, containing considerations relating to the further expansion and improvement of trade in this region. We gladly give the aforementioned Director Schreuder the satisfaction that during his administration trade has flourished and increased more than before, so that in his last financial year 1749/1750 everything was sold out, and of no more than two shiploads from Batavia nothing more was to be found in the warehouses, by which the profits obtained on the sale amounted to a sum of f698335: 16:- or on average 149 percent, and the profits of the following

From Surat, the 4th of January, Anno 1755 and that one is assisted with the necessary quantity of manufactures of the required quality from the Fatherland, the following year promised to be even greater; having meanwhile disposed of around four tons of treasure in all kinds of goods there with suitable profits. The bulkiness of the sugar, which is brought and consumed here in a great quantity, contributes very much to this; indeed, we guess that the sugar alone takes up three of the five ships. Sugar, when it yields ample profits, is good merchandise for dunnage and to fill remaining space, but it becomes disadvantageous, even in that case, when one employs one or more ships on its account. We do not put this forward as if we disapproved of sending sugar to this Directorate, by no means: the selling price of eight grosten per seer is a good price; but we are of the opinion that if one loads all the other merchandise besides sugar into three ships, so much space will still remain in each ship that it can be filled with a large quantity of sugar, and that, in order to send some three million and more pounds, one does not precisely need two more ships, and thus to employ five. At least this is certain to us: that in so far as one already employed five ships for that trade, the goods destined for the Directorate of Mocha must be loaded into the same, since Your Excellencies have resolved, upon the memorandum of the departing Director Schreuder, to let one of those five ships depart for Mocha, whereby the sending of a direct ship from the main castle to that realm can then be spared, without even other advantageous goods for Surat having to be left behind due to the loading of those goods for Mocha. For we rest assured that when Your Excellencies will have examined the aforementioned return, which we trust that Your Excellencies will do with the utmost attentiveness, From Surat, the 4th of January, Anno 1755 to send the ship away without company, but this year the ship Bloemendaal will sail for Mocha with freight goods, to which we, according to the order of the Honorable Company, will add such merchandise on account of the Company as can be disposed of there with the most advantage and must be missed here. Regarding the sale of the Bengal silk in Anno 1749/50, we have the honor to report that the same was received upon a price current sent from here in anno 1746 and an order made in Anno 1747 with the ships Wildrijk and Langewijk, but upon inspection was found not at all to agree with the prices and samples sent from here, as appears from the successive letters. No. 13. From Surat, 4 January 1755 ...trace. From the papers submitted on this matter, annexed here under No. 16 and 17, it appears that the parcel brought by the first-mentioned vessel was not only found to be, for the most part, of an inferior sort than was stated on the packing slips, but moreover, taken altogether, was charged very high, so that even if it had been sold for the prices apportioned from here, a loss of 7 3/8 per cent would still have been incurred upon it, according to the annexes under No. 16. The situation is just the same with the quantity brought by the last-named vessel Langewijk, which taken together was charged 9 23/32 to 54 2/32 per cent more expensive than the samples sent from here, except for the first sort which is set 8 per cent lower, as appears from No. 17. Consequently, the same remained lying unsaleable in the warehouses from 13 April 1747 until 28 October 1749, when it was finally sold and the notable loss mentioned in the text was suffered upon it. Two months after the sale, Their High Nobilities granted authorization for the sale of all unsaleable goods by missive dated 9 December 1749, this being all that we have been able to trace by way of elucidation regarding this matter. ...and Cochin China, as being the basis upon which the entire trade must be built, Your Honour will then, for the following year, have excused so many goods, and thus as much cargo space will have been gained as the trade goods for Mocha may occupy, both by reason of the negligible profits and the large losses suffered on some goods, such as on quicksilver, red lead, Dutch vermilion, etc., but especially the Bengal silk, upon which, on a quantity of 29,783 1/64 lb, amounting to a purchase capital of f 181,963:10, a loss was incurred of 34 1/2 per cent, being no less than f 62,781:9:8, whereas from here people have so often complained about not fulfilling our demand for that particular commodity, and it still yields a reasonable profit. From Surat, 4 January 1755 We shall dutifully sell the pepper, when it is sent to us, for not less than f 44:- per 100 lb, but for some years nothing has been brought of it, because our competitors... ...less, what prompted the servants to dispose of the same with such a notable loss, and therefore we must be informed of both matters at the very first opportunity, when we shall declare ourselves further on it. Regarding what was presented to us in the aforementioned memorandum, we must further note that almost all the sugar, along with several other goods, which the Company sells on the Malabar Coast, is collected from there by the English, Portuguese, and natives, and disposed of again in this Directorate at a reasonable profit, and that as a result, prices sometimes fall very rapidly. We observe that the sole cause of this is the lower prices at which the goods are sold on the Malabar Coast; for if one sells sugar on the Malabar Coast for 2 light stuivers and 14 pennings, and in Surat for four stuivers per pound, it is very well understandable that our competitors, natives, and indeed Company servants take advantage of this and seek their profit therein, and thus, as From Surat, 4 January 1755. The Swedes do not only go along the entire Malabar Coast, where they take in pepper, opium, and sandalwood, but also along the Malayan Coast in the Strait of Malacca, where they purchase tin for Spanish reals, or barter it for opium. we have said before, ruin the market for us by means of our own merchandise. Therefore, we judge that the selling prices at all the trading posts throughout the whole of the Indies must be set as uniformly as is in any way possible, or at least the difference should be so slight that, to such a notable detriment of the Company as now occurs, goods cannot be bought by others at one post and retailed at another. And when proper attention is paid to this, as we desire for the service of the Company, then we trust that all those or so-called Portuguese, English, and even Swedish ships will indeed stay away. For we can hardly accept as truth that the Swedes, besides sailing directly to China, would also sail to other places in the Indies to carry on trade there from one place to another; fol. 19 From Surat, 4 January 1755 The regents have consented to the construction of a new lodge, but not such a one as was designed by the former Director Schreuder. On the contrary, in the month of September last, they caused the foundations laid for it in his time to be dug up by force, and did not leave a single stone thereof in the ground, as they declare outright that they will never tolerate our making a fort there according to the plan of Mr. Schreuder, for which their fear of the construction of a new lodge has been caused by the English. In the past financial year 1753/4, the elephant tusks, as well as those recently we can hardly accept; and therefore we wish to be somewhat further enlightened on that matter. For the rest, with respect to the aforementioned memorandum, we can well conform to the authority which Your Honors have granted to the servants, both on account of the bad condition of the present one, and for reasons further given for it, provided that, to obtain permission for it, no great expenses will have to be incurred; while it pleases us that Your Honors have ordered the servants to make known in their letters the further matters appearing in that memorandum and deemed of service, so that customary deliberation and resolution could then follow thereupon. The elephant tusks, which serve almost exclusively for the trade brought from Batavia, have yielded a fairly reasonable advance, in From Surat, 4 January 1755. per 100 lb in the quantity of pieces in a picul, instead of 500, is the reason that the lot could not be sold. The domestic copper has rendered a profit in the two most recent years of 46 to 48 percent. As the return goods here become more expensive from year to year, we were thereby in the past year compelled to reduce the collection by 9 percent, and on some sorts to abandon 24 to 32 percent, because the suppliers, above the previous increase advance, namely the former 28 and the latter 50 7/8 percent, notwithstanding that the Portuguese and others annually bring a large quantity thereof, and this year alone about 150000 lb came from Goa, which however still lie unsold in the warehouses, the lack of heathen weddings throughout the whole of Hindustan during an entire year making this merchandise rather unwanted. The same reason operates much more strongly regarding the tortoiseshell, the price of which has fallen considerably for two years, which, added to the high invoicing, being on average calculated at 847 florins per 100 lb, brought recently by Bloemendaal, could not be sold. in this Directorate, we see that they are not much in demand, since the parcel brought by Kerkwijk and Bloemendaal, according to the servants' writing of 15 December 1750, still lies unsold, so that we cannot understand how one has seen fit to write with so much eagerness to have those tusks from the Fatherland, when one is not beforehand assured of a greedy sale and ample profits, and does not beforehand inquire after the prices of goods which one wishes newly to demand from the Fatherland, just as one now attributes to the high purchase price in the Fatherland of the red copper that the same would also not sell, while, even if the very same price of Japanese copper were offered for it, the same would nevertheless yield no more than 7 percent advance. As agreeable as the profits realized in this Directorate appeared to us, so cheerful it was also for us to see that the debts in Surat had been recovered.

From Surat, January 4, Anno 1755 We have been pleased to learn that all the contracted returns, both for the Netherlands and for India, on the requisition for 1750, have come in, with the exception only of four packs of piece-goods and 37 bales of cotton yarns pro Patria. We hope that the servants, through their attention and vigilance, will not only succeed in this manner yearly, but will also be in a position to obtain the goods so early that they can be sent to Ceylon and loaded there into the return ships. But even if the time should already have advanced so far that those goods could no longer catch the return ships in Ceylon, we still find no reason why those packs should not be forwarded to Ceylon, since those packs would arrive too late in Batavia to be dispatched with the shipment of that year to the Fatherland, which amounts to pretty much the same thing, namely, whether they must remain lying over on Ceylon or in Batavia until the shipment of the following year. Yet when those goods are delivered on Ceylon, the Company has the advantage therein that it saves the risk of the voyage from Ceylon to Batavia. For we judge that such precautions must be observed to the utmost, just as care must be taken regarding the time of the departure of the ships, so that it does not take place when the season has advanced too far, which recently caused the stay of the ship Zeelandia, and now again very probably of Hogersmilde, through which the Honourable Company has suffered a very significant loss. And therefore the Surat servants shall absolutely have to be bound, if the season has advanced too far, to always keep the ships for overwintering, whether at Bombay or at Bouwnager, wherever is best situated. The sailing day of the last ship having been fixed by Their High Excellencies at the latest on April 30, we shall most obediently observe that order, and in case any ships should be forced to winter here due to the passing of the season, we shall, with the approval of Your Right Honourable, choose the best and most suitable place for that purpose. Henceforth we shall send all returns to Ceylon and not to Batavia, but directly to Patria, and we shall endeavour, if not all, at least as much of them as possible, to be dispatched in time to be transported to the Fatherland with the Ceylon ships, rather than having them delivered from Surat directly to the headquarters. Our competitors wanted to have 32 percent more and would not even determine a price for the cotton yarns. However, we have not sat still, but have made a collection of returns in Amed-abaad and Brootchia, which we have examined collegially and found to be virtuous. This year we have been more fortunate than our competitors, which makes us hope that Your Right Honourable will be pleased to be satisfied therewith, the more so because we at least come to satisfy the demand for cotton yarns at reasonable prices according to the circumstances of the times, and for less. From Surat, the 4th of January 1755 amply their portion, and are now as little esteemed by the Government as they were previously feared, which is the reason that they have concluded a contract with Nanna the prince of the Sewas, but in accordance with highest received orders, just as we shall postpone the celebration of any birthday until further orders, so we thank you for the favor of being permitted to celebrate the same at our own expense. It is surprising, since they certainly ought to have known and understood better the interest and custom of that Nation in such cases, and especially should not have colluded with them at a time when they seize the opportunity to ruin Surat, and to thwart the interests of the Company by meddling in the arisen troubles; and to join with the Governor and the Sewas, and thereby commit all kinds of outrages; yet it is to be hoped that time will show that all this will cost them dearly. The matter of the ships furnishes us with nothing special, except that, in dutiful observance of Your High Honors' very respected order, we shall endeavor to effect their speedy dispatch as far as possible, the Fiscal being ordered to examine closely the journals, especially those of late arrivals or those that have had a long voyage, and to make all further possible investigation to discover to what the cause of their late arrival is to be attributed, principally whether they were detained by providing convoy, making unnecessary and even forbidden calls at places, delaying longer than necessary at those where they had to call according to orders, etc.; furthermore whether the ship's officers bring or take along any private goods in excess of the Regulation, as well as whether any private sugar or other goods have been sold or taken on board along the way by them, or by the passengers and other crew members; upon which findings we shall cause proceedings to be taken against the offenders, those expenses may not be charged to the account of the Company, but everyone will be obliged to bear them himself. and From Surat, the 4th of January in the Year 1755 The homeland returns will be sent to Ceylon, and regarding the wintering, one will punish the carelessness of the ship's officers. and respectfully report thereof to Your High Honors. Notwithstanding the decline in the price of tortoiseshell, we would still have disposed of the parcel recently brought by Bloemendaal with a small profit, had it been charged to us at the same price as in previous years, or at 500 ps per picol; but these two points differing too much, we were obliged to keep that horn until better times, in order to try to negotiate a more favorable price for it than what is presently offered to us. The order to sell the Ceylon cinnamon henceforth no higher than f 4:-:- the pound, and on the other hand the Japanese bar copper no lower than f 90:-:- the 100 lb, we shall dutifully obey. Circumstances and consequences of the dispute that arose from this, we shall, to avoid prolixity, respectfully refer to the account inserted in our Resolution of the 4th of September last, and merely say in conclusion that the Regents would not rest until they had dug up that stumbling block, namely the old foundations, and cleared it out of the way. To the old Lodge nothing worthy of mention was done in the past financial year, and we shall most obediently comply with the prohibition of any further repairs to it; yet at the same time we find ourselves obliged humbly to request Your Right Excellencies that we may be permitted to carry out such unavoidable repairs as shall be utterly necessary to save this building from collapsing, and the Honorable Company's servants residing therein from accidents. Since there is no longer any room left there or in other rented dwellings for personal accommodation, we were obliged to rent a small house for the three recently arrived unmarried junior merchants near the Lodge for Ropias 9 or f 13:10:- per month.
