The skipper Jacob Rijsik having already raised difficulties on shore concerning his projected cargo, and stated that he feared he would not be able to stow everything, we the undersigned were commissioned by the Council of Policy to proceed on board and inspect how matters stood, with orders, in case the remaining 21 bales of linens should be left over, along with the wheat and other small items destined for Cochin and Ceylon, to then take as many bales of kapok out of the ship as would be necessary to stow the said articles; also in such case respectfully to inform Your Right Noblenesses thereof by a supplementary letter. Consequently we have the honor to bring to the knowledge of Your Right Noblenesses in all humility that, pursuant thereto, we proceeded on board the Noord Beveland. To the same as before. And From Surat, 30 April 1762 and found that everything, and particularly the hold, was so full that not a single package more could be stowed therein; wherefore, after having made an estimate of the space, we had 111 bales of cotton out of the 800 that were therein taken out of the hold, containing 39534 lb gross and 38504 lb net, as Your Right Noblenesses will be able to see more fully from the enclosed note, if it please you; against which we loaded back into it 436 bags of wheat at 5 maon each, 121 bales of linens, 5 bales of damaged spices and dust thereof, and 6 small cases of various sorts with gold and silver botidaars and allegias, satins, red sealing wax, and indigo, with which the cleared space was again filled in such manner that of the extracted kapok not a single bale more could fit in, so that we sent the aforesaid 111 bales back up with the vessels in which the aforesaid goods had arrived, and therefore no more than 689 bales were shipped in the Noord Beveland; the cost of the returned bales at the bottom of the invoice of that amount having been deducted by the second signatory. Also, European and Indian piece goods are bought and sold there by yards and guz, the guz there being equally large as in Bombay. Coins Gold Ducats in species and gold rupees maintain approximately the Surat rate there, rising and falling depending on whether much or little of those species or other gold is brought in. Silver and Other Coins Bombay and Surat rupees are most current there and can always be spent without loss, but one also sees a type of rupee called Kaliani chehra, meaning as much as Kaliani coin, which are of a lower alloy and therefore cannot be exchanged for Surat or Bombay rupees except with a 2 to 3 percent discount, Kaliani being a place not far from Bassein where the same were minted when that city was still under Moorish rule. The bazarucos, which are minted both here and in Bombay, also circulate at the same rate as on those islands. Of these Cutch mahmudis, 105 pieces weigh 1 lb, or 61¼ pieces 1 seer; they cannot be spent in Halar except with a loss of at least 8 percent, sometimes running up to 25 percent. 1 Halar mahmudi is current only in that kingdom, and fetches there 2/5 rupee, or 12 stivers Dutch. Foreign coins are not current there, but are accepted according to the silver exchange rate, which falls or rises in proportion to imports and exports. Copper 1 paisa is 4 areca nuts in Cutch, but in Halar 251 [illegible] 32 in a seer. In Halar 1 paisa fetches 28 badams, or almonds, also more or less, as it fluctuates. 54½ paise weigh 1 lb Dutch, thus there are Weights Coarse weight 1 bahar is 105 lb or 15 frazils. 1 frazil is 27 ditto or 10 maunds. 1 maund is 1 29/28 lb. The fractions of the maunds are calculated at the large scale only down to 2½ maunds, or fully 1 lb, and not less, being the smallest weight used there in the weighhouse or alfandega. The weight in the custom house is to the advantage of the buyer, who most times for the frazil, which ought to contain 27 lb, receives 28 to 29 lb; the reason from which this difference originates is that the weights of 1 to 4 frazils are large stones sewn around with gunny in which much dust settles, and when the gunny is worn out, these stones are patched again with other gunny, without removing the old; in addition to this, the weighers very easily let themselves be bribed by their co-religionists, and manipulate the balance at will, which the government condones.
