From Surat, the 27th of April 1762. The requested plans sent. The aforesaid plans are enclosed. The travel expenses of the assistant Mauw to Brootchia have been passed. [Margin: And will insist on a speedy answer.] to Bombay, to whom they would send a copy of our letter, and at the same time requested a plan of the one and the other. This left us very embarrassed, as we have no one here who understands such matters. But finally, the Secretary of our council presented to us a plan and a cross-section in elevation of each, which we approved in the session of the 16th of February after mature deliberation, though subject to the correction of wiser judgment, and on the 4th of the following month we sent them to the English Gentlemen with a letter. To this they replied to us in a writing of the 12th of that month that they were to send the said drawings to Bombay at the first secure opportunity, and would communicate the sentiment of their superiors to us as soon as they should be informed of the same. But to this date we have heard nothing regarding this, and after the departure of Noordbeveland we shall further insist on a speedy answer. Meanwhile we have the honor to present to Your High Nobilities a copy of the aforesaid plans among the enclosures, and wish that they may merit Your High Nobilities' favorable approbation. Travel expenses we have had none, except ƒ 50:—:—, which by resolution of the 10th of February 1756 were Copy sent. 145 From Surat, the 27th of April 1762. [Margin: But those of the factor of Jeger left to his own account.] Wherein the expenses on merchandise have consisted. granted to an Assistant going to Brootchia, and which we caused to be paid out from the Company's treasury there on the 26th of November to the Assistant Jan Hendrik Mauw sent thither, besides an additional ƒ 3:—:— for extra board. It is true that the factor of Jeger, who, as mentioned hereinbefore, had been summoned hither, upon his return to Brootchia sent us an account for the expenses incurred on the journey to and fro, but on the 16th of February we rejected it for reasons recorded in the Resolution of that date. The Expenses on Merchandise amounted as of the ultimate of August last, or in the past financial year, to a sum of ƒ 35,167:9:8, and after deduction of ƒ 9,380:9:8 which came to the credit of this account, still ƒ 25,787:—:—, among which are ƒ 20:12:8 from Ahmedabad for 200 canisters of powdered sugar weighed out there; furthermore, under the entry of debits and credits, we mentioned various items that were written off to this account. Of the Gifts, the ordinary annual ones amounted to: Purchase: At Surat - - - - - ƒ 7,253:3:— and At Brootchia - - - - ƒ 482:2:— Total: ƒ 7,735:5:— Sale: ƒ 8,289:1:8 ƒ 1,724:17:8 Total: ƒ 10,013:19:— And From Surat, the 27th of April 1762. The difference with the past year, both regarding the ordinary as well as the extraordinary gifts. Wherein those at Brootchia have consisted. And the extraordinary gifts since the ultimate of March of last year: Purchase: At Surat - - - - - - - ƒ 784:12:8 in goods At Brootchia – – – – – – ƒ 364:10:— in cash At Ahmedabad - - - - - - ƒ 679:—:— Total: ƒ 1,828:2:8 The first, or ordinary ones, were settled on the 5th of August 1761 and the 18th of March 1762, the Surat ones amounting to ƒ 5:3:— more in purchase and ƒ 40:10:— more in sale than the past year, and the Brootchia ones to ƒ —:12:— less in purchase and ƒ 9:13:8 more in sale, because matters could not conveniently be arranged otherwise with the goods. But that the extraordinary Gifts at this main office this year exceed those of the past year by ƒ 434:9:8 is caused by a piece of crimson-red homeland jewel, containing 69 carats, which, according to what is recorded in the resolution of the 15th of June, we could not avoid handing over to the Governor of the city. Those at Brootchia arise from customary presentational gifts presented on solemn occasions, and principally from a gift of 50 gold ducats, which we could not dispense ourselves from having offered to the Governor there, as he had informed the first undersigned, by letter to be found among the Translations, of the upcoming circumcision of two of his sons, and requested him, along with the entire Council, to attend the public festivities to be arranged on that account 147 From Surat, the 27th of April 1762. The tolls and revenues have rendered more than in the past year, and especially the private poll tax. [Margin: As also at Ahmedabad.] But those from the small seal less, and why. etcetera, as appears in more detail from our resolutions of the 12th of October and the 4th of November of last year. Those of Ahmedabad would not have amounted to more than ƒ 503:10:—, being the amount given away during the life of the late Factor de Bellon, as appears from our resolution of the 5th of October, had not the assistant Smit been compelled by the rulers to stay over for the Heathen New Year festival, on which occasion he was obliged to present the customary gifts, which, in the hope that those expenses would cease therewith, we also passed in our session of the 26th of November. The Tolls and other Revenues have yielded in the past financial year, some more, others less than the year before, having in particular: The Private Poll Tax yielded ƒ 5,693:1:— and thus ƒ 2,073:7:— more, the King's share having amounted to ƒ 3,369:17:—, and the Company having had for its portion ƒ 2,323:4:—, consequently ƒ 257:13:— more than in the preceding financial year. Against this, the small seal did not yield more in the past financial year than ƒ 308:14:—, being ƒ 896:14:— less than the year before, when, among other things, a large number of seals were used for deeds for a multitude of English deserters, many of whom subsequently deserted again, but which resource is now through

For the free navigation and trade there presently seem to be no interested parties, so that the same is again standing still and affords us no material to report anything thereof. How matters stand with the General Charges and Profits in the past book year 1760/1 in comparison with the preceding one, will clearly appear from the following specification: The General Charges and Expenses amount At Souratta ƒ127822: 14: 8 At Brootchia ƒ 5131: 18: — At Amed abaad ƒ 5321: 4: — 10453: 2: — ƒ130175: 16: 8 Against this, the net profits and advantages, obtained both through trade and otherwise, amount to a considerable sum of ƒ805449: 7: — so that the former being subtracted from the latter, it appears that this Directorship in the latest book year 1760/1 has come ahead by an amount of ƒ671733: 10: 8 And in comparison with the previous book year 1759/60, when the profits and advantages amounted to only ƒ766787: 18: — and against that the charges and expenses ƒ187069: 7: — consequently the profits only exceeded the charges by ƒ579718: 11: — 149 From Souratta the 27 April 1762 In the latest passed book year 1760/1 there was gained ahead more by a sum of ƒ87454: 19: 8 Furthermore, the actual balances and debtors, both at this Main Office and elsewhere, as of the last of August, produced an amount of ƒ1077803: 13: — And the creditors ƒ26476: 1: 8 So that the net state of the Honorable Company in this Directorship at the closing of the books of 1760/1 amounted to a notable capital of ƒ1051327: 11: 8 With respect to the comparison of the charges against the Memorandum of retrenchment: The same, as stated above, in the last passed book year 1760/1 amounted to ƒ138275: 16: 8 Yet according to the Memorandum they should yearly only amount to about ƒ111500: —: — And they therefore exceed the aforementioned Memorandum still by ƒ26775: 16: 8 Although the same in comparison with the previous book year 1759/60, when they exceeded the Memorandum of retrenchment by ƒ68969: 7: — are now less than then by ƒ42193: 10: 8 The Trade Books being about to be closed, the Honorable Head Administrator duly gave notice thereof, From Souratta the 27 April 1762 and at the session of the 16th of February served a report regarding some small differences discovered during the closing thereof, upon which we also on that day made dispositions as can be seen in the margin of that paper, two members of the Council being at the same time appointed to examine the same and serve a report, which came in on the 18th of March, and nothing being mentioned therein that required any disposition, the books were subsequently examined in our meeting and found correct, the same going with the bearer of this to Your Right Excellencies. Likewise on the aforementioned 16 February we acted regarding another report from the Honorable Company's Administrator concerning two entries that were charged to this Directorship by invoice, all these papers going over in copy among the appendices, so that we take the liberty to refer ourselves with all respect thereto. 751 From Souratta the 27 April 1762 from Souratta pro patria in the year 1760/1 brought into one volume. Perhaps they will await the return of their fleet in order to act with greater impact then. Meanwhile, they are very encumbered and embarrassed with the merchandise brought to Bombay by five ships arriving from Europe in the month of February. Notwithstanding this, they have purchased the cargo of three Portuguese ships recently arrived at the aforesaid island from Macao, as has been stated above under the sales, and the cargo of the fourth ship from Macao, which is valued at 4 lakh rupees, those of Goa also offer to them for sale. It is likely that they will endeavor to gain possession of that as well, if only for the sugar, with which they cause us great undercutting. From Souratta, the 27th of April 1762. 1 copper mortar with an iron pestle, 1 copper saucepan, 2 matching lids, and 1 skimmer under the administration of the surgeon, to be exchanged for new ones. The specification of all these repairs, exchanges, and renewals has not yet been submitted; but that which, according to our resolution of the 13th of January of the past year, was repaired, exchanged, or renewed by the purveyor, having been presented on the 8th of April following and amounting to ƒ 726: 13:—, we approved on the last-mentioned day. Just as we also did on the 5th of August last with respect to two specifications: the first amounting to ƒ 65: 15: 8, namely ƒ 19: 11:— in cash and ƒ 46: 4: 8 from stores, being the cost of a new money chest for the main treasury in place of the one sold as old and unserviceable according to the yield mentioned above; and the second amounting to ƒ 51: 14: 8, of which ƒ 22: 8: 8 was in cash and ƒ 29: 6:— from stores, being the cost of a small cabinet for the preservation of secret papers, made pursuant to the resolution of the 20th of February of the past year. The specification for the completion of 4 twelve-pounder gun carriages, amounting to ƒ 1561: 5:—, having been presented to us for approval on the 16th of February last, but appearing to us somewhat excessive—since the aforesaid amount, added to the sum of ƒ 682: 13:— already spent thereon previously, as appears by the resolution of the 7th of October 1760, would together make a sum of ƒ 2243: 18:—, so that each twelve-pounder gun carriage would come to cost ƒ 560: 19: 8—we returned that document to the master of the equipage with orders to recalculate the same, as in all likelihood an error had been committed somewhere in the specification of the cost. But on the 18th of March the same account was resubmitted without the slightest alteration, accompanied by a report in which the said employee gives reasons for what he had charged; and as there was particular surprise at the great quantity of iron consumed for the gun carriages, he testified orally that, to assure ourselves of his honesty in this matter, the ironwork of just one carriage might be taken off and weighed, and the rest calculated accordingly. However, we did not deem it advisable to proceed with this, partly because the costs, if confirmed, would thereby be further increased, and partly because that operation could not be carried out without causing damage to the carriage and its strength; for which reason we approved the said specification, which, together with the report, is to be found among the appendices, on the aforesaid day. From the secretarial declaration annexed to the report of the master of the equipage regarding the goods lost and rendered unserviceable during the fire at the English wharf, inserted in the resolution of the 16th of February, it having appeared that the fire engines are of no use whatever without leather hoses, we take the liberty humbly to request Your High Excellencies to provide us with them, as they cannot be manufactured here, and at the same time to add as much of the necessary grease for their maintenance as shall be deemed appropriate in a country where the penetrating air dries out everything, no matter how carefully locked up and preserved, together with instructions on how that grease must be applied if a special method is required for it. The greater the danger of fire is here, the more we must redouble our humble entreaties in that regard, and also that it may please Your High Excellencies to send us, in place of the defective one being sent over, another serviceable and strong fire engine, together with a second one with all its accessories and attachments, especially several pistons and washers, since none of that equipment can be manufactured or repaired here. The news that the Governor of Brootchia was now having new rupees struck himself, and that consequently the old ones previously current there could only be spent at a loss, and many people would no longer accept them at all, had already been known to us for a considerable time when the Brootchia employees, by letter of the 22nd of April of the past year, notified us thereof, and on that account requested to be released from the 2 percent which was previously credited to the Company's benefit on the new Surat siccas; which request, being in accordance with equity, we granted them at the meeting of the 24th of the aforesaid month. But he has changed his mind regarding that matter since then and has made no use of our permission. The said skipper also informed us in the last few days that on the outward voyage the quantity of an entire leaguer of his arrack ration had leaked out, leaving him unable to reach Batavia with the remainder. Wherefore he not only requested that this shortage be supplied here, but also that arrack be provided to him as a ration for the Moorish seafarers. We granted him both, but as our supply will barely suffice for the garrison, etc., we were compelled, through the representation made, to purchase strong drink for the crew, buying 5 leaguers of local liquor for that purpose, of which 1560 cans are calculated for 130 heads of Moors and 420 for the Europeans. In order to fulfill the promise made earlier under the subject of vessels regarding the new small vessel for Bengal, this is further accompanied by a copy of a report concerning how much more a rounded stern will cost than a flat hoy stern; and since the rough estimate thereof amounts to 1680 guilders, we have decided, in the expectation that the final outcome may turn out somewhat lower, to have a rounded stern built on the new small vessel for Bengal, and to instruct the Master of Equipage above all not to make that vessel any larger or more spacious than the...
