After the reading of which, the Lord Director gave into mature consideration of the members in what manner to deal with the shortages shown therein, which have occurred within the period of 9 months, consisting of the following, namely: on 183647½ lb cloves, nails, short 161 lb or 3/8 per cent scant on 29611 5/6 lb nutmegs, short 262¾ lb or 9/10 per cent on 673961 1/6 lb Bantam pepper, short 32278 lb or 4 4/5 per cent on 909 lb Malabar cardamom, short 12 lb or 1 3/10 per cent ample on 4576 7/8 lb Ceylon coffee beans, short 76 lb or 1 7/8 per cent on 23104 lb iron, short 450½ lb hereunder sorting 200 lb rust on 592½ steel, short 5½ or 3/6 per cent on 9804 lb Siamese gum lac, short 173 lb or 1¾ per cent. Thus, after consideration of all the above-demonstrated shortages, after first the oath of purgation had been taken by the Merchant and Trade Bookkeeper Christoffel de Haan as interim warehouse master, as well as by the Fiscal Emanuel de Poorter and his authorized extraordinary commissioners Jacobus Weber and Frans van Lom, likewise by the ordinary commissioner Frans Canter, that they had not enriched themselves nor were about to enrich themselves with any of the shortages, and most principally with that of the pepper (from which the Junior Merchant and ordinary commissioner Egbertus Legrand was excused because he had continuously been absent from the warehouses during the inventory taking), it was resolved to write off no more than 2 per cent, or 13479 lb, on the pepper, but for the remaining 18799 lb to charge the deceased's estate at the purchase price at 7 7/10 mamudis per 6 lb, amounting together to 23028 29/40 mamudis or f 9787:4:9 2/5; and because the other shortages were reasonable and did not exceed the permitted allowance, they were all approved; but the 20 pairs of suffocated and cockroach-damaged shoes were charged to the account of the aforesaid commissioner and concurrently warehouse apprentice Frans Canter for f 72:13:8, since it had been his duty to take care of them; while, according to this resolution in conformity with the order, the 200 lb of iron rust was dumped into the sea by the Fiscal and two judicial commissioners, as the report submitted thereof has clearly made known, the insertion of which is excused because it was drawn up according to custom; but instead, space is granted to another ditto, which was submitted by the Senior and Junior Master of this Office regarding the sorting and packing of the good radix China in sugar and the burning of the bad radix China, according to our resolution of today, see: Report made and in all reverence submitted to the Right Honorable and worshipful Simon Clement, Senior Merchant and Director of this Direction and the jurisdiction thereof, together with the respective Council. Further, the Commander communicated to the members how the Merchant and Trade Bookkeeper Christoffel de Haan, the idle Under-Merchant Gerrit Hendrik Terre, and Ensign Wilhelmus Lindeman came to request that their written petitions addressed to Their High Excellencies From Persia, dated 29 June 1743. to obtain their discharge from this region might be forwarded to the aforementioned Their High Excellencies in Batavia among the Honorable Company papers with a favorable recommendation, which request was granted to them; their requests will likewise be forwarded to the headquarters among the Honorable Company papers. We, the undersigned, declare and certify that by order and in the presence of the Merchant and First Resident Abraham van Suchtelen, we have repacked the aloeswood remaining here in the Company's warehouses for return shipment on the vessel 't Duifje, and after its accurate weighing to the ship's officers found that a quantity of 181 7/6 lb of aloeswood remaining in these warehouses on the ultimo of August last was now found on the scale to be no more than 176 1/4 lb, and consequently short 2 1/3 lb or about 1 1/4 percent, which diminution must certainly have been caused by the rotting, splintering, and crumbling to which this fragrant wood above all other goods is subject and singularly prone, and moreover that the same must have dried out in this burning climate due to the fierce hot winds that blew very strongly through here in the last of October just passed; as we can attribute this loss of weight to nothing else, and so that we have set down everything concerning this according to the pure and sincere truth, we are also always ready, if required, to further confirm this our writing under oath. [illegible] which cited reasons were considered fundamental by the other council members, and having been further extensively considered and reconsidered, it was decided by the joint council to let the small vessel Dreijfje depart as soon as possible in God's name via Tuticorin to Batavia, with the aforementioned value of 3 to 4 tons of treasure, both goods and money. However, the gentleman commander declared that honor and reparations could not bring him to this, since Their High Noble Excellencies were pleased to clearly order by letter of 30 September of the preceding year that the money of the brokers, along with all the other cash of the Company held here in stock—and of which there is reason to believe that it often meets with bad employment—must be sent thither by the first shipping opportunity, even though this could not occur without the known loss of money, retaining only as much thereof as is needed for daily expenses; wherefore, to avoid the said suspicion, which he feared might increase to his soul's sorrow if any money remained here, he therefore fully persisted in the resolution of 11 April past, even though in his conscience he could not oppose the concept of the honorable members.
