Furthermore, from a report annexed to the findings, the validity of the discovered clove dust was shown to us by two similar instruments: the one concerning the inspection upon arrival of the ship Duijfje, as well as during the general unloading of the found pepper dust to a quantity of 3553 1/2 lb., which, according to the order, was dumped into the sea and thrown away; as also another concerning the dust found in the sample bag sent along from Batavia. All of which documents, because of their importance, are granted space here; and first, the declaration concerning the cloves: Today, the 8th of November, in the year 1742. We, the undersigned, Cornelis Sonneveld, book- and warehouse keeper of this office, and Hieronimus Winder, ship's bookkeeper stationed on the Honorable Company's vessel the Duijfje, declare and certify that, owing to the absence of the junior merchant and second officer Willem Dumee and the master of the said vessel Willem Noseman, by order and in the presence of the merchant and resident chief here, Abraham van Suchtelen, successively, or rather since the 5th of October until the 6th of this month, when the cloves from the cargo of the aforementioned ship the Duijfje were brought to this wharf, we purified the same of their extraordinary dustiness before they were brought here to the scale; and subsequently, from the entire quantity of 5000 lb. invoiced from Gamron, having been enclosed in 40 chests, with all possible care, attention, and caution, we accurately gathered an amount of 278 lb. of dust, making 5 3/5 per cent, and properly packed it into a double canvas bag, furthermore sealed its tied top with the Honorable Company's and our seals, and also handled everything concerning this carefully and with the greatest attentiveness; and because this contains the pure and upright truth, we are at all times, whenever such might be required, prepared to confirm this statement of ours under oath. Thus handled, and the effect thereof declared in the Netherlands Office of Bassoura, on the day, month, and year aforesaid. Was signed: H. Winder and C. Sonneveld. On this day, the 30th of November 1742, we, the undersigned, Willem Dumee, junior merchant and second officer, and Hendrik Dideloff Bak, assistant at this office, declare and certify that by order of the merchant and resident chief Abraham van Suchtelen, we proceeded on the 3rd of October last with some sieves, for lack of pepper tarpaulins, on board the ship the Duijfje lying at anchor in this Euphrates River; and there, in our presence as well as in the presence of the abovementioned stationed master Willem Noseman and chief mate Albert Verstraten, on the 4th of October last, had the crew make a start with the sifting of such pepper as had still remained for this office after the unloading of 108,000 lb. at Bender de Boucher, out of a quantity of 250,000 lb. shipped at the Island of Onrust for this directorate and weighed into the vessel; and wherewith subsequently, upon its complete discharge on the 24th of this month, the work being finished, it was found by us at the scale that from this entire parcel an amount of 3553 1/2 lb. of natural pepper dust had arisen, which, pursuant to the highly revered order of Their High Excellencies the Most Honorable Gentlemen at Batavia contained in their highly valued missive dated 6 November 1741, was thereafter dumped into the sea in the presence of us all. Having declared this according to the pure truth, we are also ready, if required, to confirm the same further under oath. From Persia, dated 29 June 1743. And with five different private seals, both of their Honors there and of the mentioned ship officers, found properly and undamaged sealed at the head and bottom, a canvas sample sack of pepper, which according to the packing note found therein was to contain a gross weight of 74 lb. And which, after deduction of the sack, which here weighed on the scale 3 1/4 lb, A net weight of 70 3/4 lb. However, here on the scale, the pepper and dust together was found by us to be net only 66 3/4 lb. From which had to be sifted in excess dust 1 3/4 lb, And during this sifting and handling was further lost 1/4 lb, Subtract for that together 2 lb. Thus remains in deliverable pepper 64 3/4 lb. Consequently yielding in underweight and dust together a net weight of 6 lb, Percent 8 1/4 scarce. This then having been so inspected by us and treated with all possible accuracy, we declare this our writing to contain the pure truth, and therefore we are also always prepared to confirm the same on oath. Herewith the affairs of Basra being concluded, after which the Commander proceeded to those of Bushehr, who first submitted for consideration the request of the Commissariat to obtain authorization for the garbling of cinnamon, which request having been taken into consideration, license thereto was granted to the same whenever this was highly necessary, yet such as accords with the most recently received highly esteemed order of their High Excellencies, namely, when the same is mildewed or mixed with thick and useless wood, but not to have the coarse picked out from the fine cinnamon, as was done to our painful regret by our brokers according to what their High Excellencies stated by letter of 30 November 1742. Meanwhile, as was further accepted as communicated, that the restitution of the 90 tomans previously extorted from the broker Natta and the Commissariat's first servant Sjambe, who at the same time occupies the office of interpreter, on account of a claim made against them, as was set down more circumstantially in our resolution of 16 January last, had taken place; and furthermore heed was given to the persistent request of the assistant there, Huijbert van Poot, for his discharge from this directorship, whereupon it was approved and resolved to postpone the request of that person until the new Commissiant shall depart thither, when one of the available clerks will be sent thither to replace him. 379 From Persia under date 29 June 1743 Of the shortage found here of 2¼ per cent, dust and sweepings counted together, 1 per cent was credited to the crew and the other 1¼ per cent placed to their account at cost price, and 19 lb of dust was returned to Batavia; meanwhile only 1 per cent was passed, and the other 1/100 per cent shall be dealt with as stated, as what is shown here cannot be credited because it does not agree with the orders of their High Excellencies, but the same shall also be from package No. 659, slightly stained, regarding which the ship's officers can allege no other reason than that this must already have occurred prior to receipt. Being 2½ per cent, with the officers citing as the reason for this deficiency that it must have been caused, partly by heavy drying out, and partly by the poor condition of the chests, through the cracks of which something occasionally sifts, besides which 3 to 4 chests were also found to be extraordinarily dusty, from which a quantity of 19 lb of dust was collected, which was left uncounted. — Of this 1 13/40 per cent, the ship's officers Nutmegs according to invoice in 30 chests net 5000. — Here at the scale - - - - - - - - - - 4931. ½. Being 1/100 per cent, of which the officers allege as reason that this must certainly be due to the loss of the lime that covers and adheres to them, as well as drying out in a hot hold, crushing, etc. Being 3 3/32, the officers are not Cinnamon according to invoice in 40 bales lb net 3200. — Here at the scale - - - ditto lb 3327. – From which deducted tare at 6 lb per bale 240. — Comes to net lb 3087. — Therefore short - - - 113. — An oath of purge having been taken. Of which 3 3/32 per cent, regarding which the officers come to allege as reason that this deficiency must notoriously have had its origin in the heavy drying out of that aromatic bark in a hot hold and the spilling of the powder that fell here through the poor packaging of gunny sacks.
