311 The Merchant and former warehouse keeper Christoffel de haan must, in accordance with the formidable order of their High Excellencies contained in their honored letter of 30 November 1742, pay at buyout price for 6 lb or 2¾ per cent, being the excess validated shortfall beyond 2½ per cent or 5 lb, of the eaglewood sent unopened to bassoura on the ship Middenrak, which amounts, according to the bassoura return of the year 1736/7, to Mamoodis 264. — ƒ 112. 4. 2 Also, there must still be paid by him at buyout price 21 lb or 1 1/5 per cent approximately of packing yarn, which on the ultimate of August 1740 was found short in both warehouses, the same having been sold according to the gamron return of 1741 at Mamoodis 8 per 6 lb, which aforementioned 21 lb cost 28. — 11. 18. — As well as another 2425 lb of pepper or 1/3, since of the 8753 lb or 2 7/9 per cent validated on the ultimate of August 1740 only 2 per cent or 6328 lb were passed, the aforementioned 2425 lb of pepper costing at buyout price Mamoodis 7 7/20 per 6 lb, Mamoodis 2970 7/8 at ƒ 1262. 10. 5, set at 2970. 1/1 1262. 10. 8. From Persia under date 29 June 1743 state would be, in order to let the shortfall of goods to the amount of f147: 10:— be compensated to the Honorable Company by the one who is liable for it, so this was presented to the warehouse master who was serving at that time, Christoffel de Haan, and the ordinary commissioners, the junior merchants Gerrit Hendrik Perre and Egbertus Legrand, and they were asked whether they could conscientiously swear to the aforementioned, which was answered affirmatively with ease. Whereupon they, in full council, took the oath of purgation before the Commander, of which action, in the outgoing letter to their Honorable Worships, sending along an extract of this, proper prior notice was given, as well as the relief of the state of this directorate was requested once again. Subsequently, the presiding gentleman informed the members that the Surat ministers, by letter of 15 April of the past year, have made a request that 2 head of good stallion horses may be purchased for them, and since possibly shortly, upon the return of Mahamet Tackie Chan, or rather earlier, a favorable opportunity might arise, whether one might not safely proceed with the purchase of those animals. Thus, it was judged affirmatively; and furthermore, the dispenser was ordered to purchase, on a convenient and advantageous occasion, two of those animals for the aforementioned office and to secure them, in order to send them thither by the first English opportunity. Likewise, the gentleman Commander submitted for the consideration of the members the necessity to fill the post left vacant by the death of the provisional warehouse master Willem Allard van Jongstal. Thus, with equal votes, the second person, Christoffel de Haan, was elected thereto pro interim, to oversee the warehouses until the arrival of the merchant Honorable Cornelis Overschie, appointed thereto by Their High Mightinesses, since the provisional fiscal Emanuel de Poorter, upon being offered it, declined it, though with the request that upon the death of the just-cited warehouse master Overschie or the gentleman Jan Marcus, the rank of the expected fiscal Dirk Storm van Schravensande might be preserved by him through shifting, which request, being irreproachable, was promised to him. Meanwhile, it was furthermore approved upon the proposal of the presiding officer to let the aforementioned fiscal, in place of the deceased provisional warehouse master, make the transfer of the warehouses to the above-appointed warehouse master De Haan as soon as possible, so that we might be assured of its true finding, survey, and transfer. Regarding ships and yachts, the Lord Director took into consideration whether it would not be advisable, since the monsoon on Malabar had already expired, to direct the ship Duifje via Tuticorin to Batavia, in order to grant its dispatch as soon as possible, which proposal was approved by every member as being most beneficial for the Honourable Company. Therefore, its intended departure via the aforementioned place as soon as possible was determined and resolved. Furthermore, heed having been paid to the written request of the officers to enjoy advance wages for their crew, their request was granted, since the ordinary time that wages are advanced on accrued monthly pay had long expired, as was also the request of the sailor Jan Holm of Stockholm, gunner, who arrived in the Indies in the year 1740 with the ship Marseveen, to be promoted to quartermaster, the more so because the master of the mentioned keel, Willem Noseman, gave good testimony that he was a vigilant and capable person for that service, being moreover granted the ordinary wage of 14 guilders per month under a new three-year contract. After concluding the aforementioned, it was made known by the Lord Director to the members that recently, for several consecutive days, his highness Abol Hassan Khan had approached and earnestly requested on diverse occasions the loan of the sloop De Valk for the transport of grains to Julfa, situated about 30 miles from here, which until now had been declined under the pretext of leakage and weakness of the crew, and that the said small vessel, after the remedy of the aforementioned, had to be employed for fetching the sulphur earth lying ready for the Honourable Company on Qeshm. But since this Duke today, through the interpreter Abraham Sahid, made known to us with moving and urgent reasons the danger in which the Sardar found himself with his army due to lack of provisions, as well as that he, through the lack of ships and dhows, if we were unwilling to assist him, would be in no position to assist this general in this his dire need with the so desperately needed food, but would have to watch with open eyes that such a precious army were destroyed by hunger, which however could be prevented through the loan of the sloop, so that if this came to the ears of his majesty, that monarch would certainly not fail to take revenge for it; whereas we now, through the so many and great services, could on the contrary be fully assured of his majesty's favour and affection, as well as that his brother, lord Mahomet Tackiechan, upon his return here would not fail gratefully to acknowledge the services rendered over some time now, toward the fulfilment of which he, the Duke, would also not fail to set everything possible to work in our favour, constantly reminding his brother of our loyal service and promise of reciprocity; and as for the sulphur, that he would have the same delivered on board the ship De Duif by his own people and vessels, etcetera; wherefore his Honour now considered himself obliged to disclose the aforementioned request to the members, and to request their good counsel in the matter. However, to our painful regret, it was seen that in this year only 18588 florins 16 stuivers 4 duiten profit was made there. The expenses amount to 9498 florins 8 duiten. Consequently, only a net surplus profit of 9090 florins 15 stuivers 12 duiten. The expenses in the year 1740/1741 amounted to 20792 florins 5 stuivers 12 duiten, And in this year only 9494 florins 8 duiten. Therefore, this year less expenses by 11297 florins 11 stuivers 8 duiten. From Persia under date 29 June 1743 for refreshments for the people and another mamudis 560 for vessels to fetch drinking water for that ship, according to a written request presented by those authorities to the residents, because their boat, due to the great distance thereof, was not capable of bringing enough of the water being consumed daily; therefore, after consideration of the necessity thereof, the one and the other have been passed for write-off. From Persia, dated 29 June 1743. Of this, 1 per cent has been validated for the ship's crew and the remaining 6 7/8 per cent, with the dust also accounted for, is to be satisfied at cost price. From 45½ lb or 1 7/8 per cent, the 37½ lb or 1/16 per cent dust are counted therein, for the reasons given regarding it, since with excess all was delivered ashore in good condition and therefore also as such stored in the warehouse, besides also the following which has been sent hither without weight and purely by count, and consists of the following, namely: 1 bale of chintz ambersia, containing 150 pieces, both according to the invoice turned out undamaged. 1 chest of pattern cloths, containing 36 pieces. Cloves, according to the invoice: 5000 lb. And thereof found net at the scale: 4643 ¾ lb. Thus it falls short: 356 ¼ lb. Set down at cost price, yielding the dust gathered from it together with 7 1/8 per cent net, and regarding which the ship's officers come to offer very probable reasons, namely that this precious commodity was first exposed to the great heat of the ship's hold during its transport from Gamron hither, and thereafter also in the entirely open unloading vessels to the burning heat of the sun, sometimes for as long as five and even six days during its unloading, and on that account must have suffered shrinkage; over and besides that its chests, although they were still repaired on board before its unloading, nevertheless through the rough handling of the boat crews and coolies drew very much apart, and even some of them with broken lids were brought ashore here in the company of the European commanders of the vessels by the usual coolies of the warehouse, so that much must have been scattered and lost in the unloading vessels and during the carrying up through their opened cracks; not to mention that during its handling with pouring, garbling, and bringing to the scale (contrary to all our precautions applied according to our ability) some may still have been crushed and flown away through its common dustiness; and finally, above all that (as appears from an annexed declaration), an amount of 278 lb, or rather 5 3/15 per cent of pure clove dust, is found under that underweight, so that when this is deducted therefrom, on this entire quantity of cloves (apart from its dust) only an actual underweight of 1 3/40 per cent amply appears to be shown; and which deficit the ship's officers most humbly supplicate that, in consideration of the reasons given for it, may be validated to them. The nutmegs shown here beside state according to the invoice: 4000 lb. And the weight here net: 3954 ¾ lb. Consequently too little: 45 ¼ lb. Or rather, an actual shortage of only 7 ¾ lb or 1/10 per cent has occurred, or rather fully 1 1/8 per cent, under which the dust coming forth from it is also included, and on this account the same reasons regarding its shrinkage are presented as were resolved for the cloves, since its chests also came ashore here with open seams and cracks, and consequently much of its usual lime, both through the working of the chests during their dispatch into the unloading vessels and the carrying up of the same, must have come loose and blown away through their open places; besides that this spicy fruit was found to be already somewhat suffering from mites, and which also caused that, during the pouring and delivery, a quantity of 37 ½ lb of dust, yielding on its entire quantity only 1/16 net, was gathered and prepared for dispatch; so that when that dust is deducted from its entire shortage, it actually appears that only 7 ¾ lb or about 1/10 per cent was lost, and therefore the ship's officers hope to remain free from being charged for the same, this being validated along with the aforesaid 278 lb or 5 ¼ per cent clove dust, which shall be sent to Batavia at the first opportunity according to the esteemed order.
