Item, the submitted invoice per the ship the Duijff stands more fully recorded in our resolutions of 31 May and 11 July past, and whereas the Commissary van Schoonderwaert, in these his letters of 7 October, brought forward his grievances concerning the charge of 3502 lb of wheat dust to the amount of ƒ411: 2:-, and at the same time excused himself that in his opinion this could not be charged to their account, since neither by letter written to him about it nor at the inspection of the delivered cargo of the sloop the Volk had any grievance been made by the Storekeeper or the Commander of that small vessel; wherefore he hopes that he would be released from it, and whereas that charge could then be assigned to no one else than the Merchant Christoffel de Haan, who was functioning at that time as Storekeeper, unless he could justify himself; therefore, the question was put to him whether, if required, Persia under date 29 June 1743. From he would be able to affirm by solemn oath that neither by him nor by any of his subordinates, nor with prior knowledge on his part, had any dust, sand, or filth been introduced into the said grain; to which he replied in the affirmative with ease, adding that he could at all times confidently swear to the contrary that upon receipt from the sloop into the warehouses the wheat had been exceedingly dusty (although the committee members had omitted to make this known at the inspection), which had indeed been the principal cause of the shortfall of 2252 lb. Hereupon it was unanimously resolved, for the present, to excuse His Honor from his tendered oath as well as from the aforementioned debit provisionally, and on the contrary to have our adopted resolution dated 11 July aforesaid take effect, which should also be communicated to the Commissary in reply. Furthermore, the Honorable Commander brought forward how all the khans residing here, with open hands and eyes, had already for a long time and still daily expected a welcoming gift from us, since that burdensome ceremony had already been performed a few days ago From Persia under date 29 June 1743 by our English neighbors, the Banyan, Moorish, Armenian, and Jewish merchants, and they had therefore already many times had the Commander addressed through the interpreter Abraham Sahid; yet he had until now continually put them off with flimsy excuses, but since this could now no longer be done, His Honor had therefore resolved, to avoid their displeasure, to make this known to all the members, as well as that in his humble opinion it was highly necessary for the well-being of the Honorable Company to gratify at least the most prominent of the 10 khans presently here with a small gift, and most particularly the Sardar of these Low Lands and son-in-law of His presently reigning Persian Majesty Nader Shah, the Khan Kalb Ali Khan, because he had conditionally refused the gifts presented to him in the month of June upon his departure for Phargonet until his return; and since that proposal was judged by everyone on the council to be necessary and reasonable, it was therefore decided, in conformity with a draft now submitted by the Commander, to have the following delivered.

231 From Persia under date 29 June 1743 should repair to this artillery and there, whereas the new ditto Erasmus van der Meulen has been appointed in place of the gunner Abraham van Giften who recently perished in the water, take an exact inventory and in that regard make a written report anew to Your Honours whether such ammunition goods as were present in the time of him, Van Giften, are still present, so we, the commissioners, believe we have conducted ourselves obediently in the manner aforesaid and found the goods to be as is more fully specified. From Persia under date 29 June 1743. and ƒ24 per month on a five-year engagement, but which time being now already well expired, the petitioner turns to Your Honours with humble entreaty that he, through your noteworthy goodness, may be honoured with such an increase in salary as Your Honours shall deem him worthy of; as also that it may then be granted to him, the petitioner, to pay into the treasury an amount of ƒ277: 15: 10, or counted in Persian mahmudis, 617 23/32 mahmudis, which he has outstanding to his credit on three retained pay accounts, in reduction of his debit to the estate of the former Isfahan chief, the Honourable Mattheus van Leijpzigh, for the benefit of the Honourable Company, provided his currently running account may be credited for the same. From Persia under date 29 June 1743 having genuinely been lost due to severe weather and not through the negligence of the crew, so that the fault was to be imputed to no one; therefore the commander was released from that accountability, and on the contrary, with the approval of the council, the purser was ordered to purchase such a similar vessel at a reasonable price at the request of the said commander for the service of the sloop; since furthermore by His Highness Mhamed Tackiechan, in writing, through his brother Abol hassanChan, an oral request was made, to the end that this small vessel might once again be sent loaded with grain to Choersagoen, 26 miles from here, where His Highness aforementioned lay with the King's Fleet, because they were in lack of that food, provided that this was the last service he would demand of us, and whereby his brother Tackiechan was greatly, indeed more than ever, obliged to be beholden, etc.; and although all arguments in refutation were employed by the authority, everything was nevertheless fruitless, that duke remaining firm in his request, while offering From Persia under date 29 June 1743 to also render us all possible services, and since we clearly saw that there was no arguing against this pressing request, but that upon refusal much trouble and vexation was to be expected from it, whereas the journey was after all short to make and all troubles could be surmounted, it was therefore unanimously resolved, willy-nilly, to grant once again that small keel for the service of the realm, in the hope that friendship would thereby be preserved, and that we, upon the arrival of the ship Duijffje, will remain freed from lending it. Consideration was also given to the request of the assistant and pay bookkeeper Anthonij Schoffier for an increase in rank and salary, since his term has expired and he is a person of good promise, therefore the same was advanced to bookkeeper at f 30 per month under a new three-year contract. Just as also Sergeant Ian Michiel Blaauw, since his term expires, on account of the good testimony of his officers, was at his request favored with f 24 per month under a new three-year contract, while on his written request it was further granted to him to be allowed to exchange such ms 134 2/3 at f 60: 12 as the same has to his credit on 3 accounts into cash, since this accords with the highly praised orders. Subsequently, the necessity of having to appoint a gauger again was presented to the members by the Commander, since Assistant Frederik Beeling, who had performed that service, had passed away on 11 November last, and as that post could not comfortably remain vacant for long, but needed to be filled by another person; it was thus approved to choose in his place the co-assistant Galenus van Oordt, who was immediately summoned to the meeting, and after he was informed of his duty, the oath prescribed for this purpose was administered to him according to custom. Yet, since one was still uncertain what reprisal the Commissioners had obtained regarding the insult suffered in the persons of their servants with the imprisonment and the extortion from them by force of 90:—:— tomans, described more broadly in their letter of 5 November 1742, therefore one could not arrive at any firm conclusion in this matter, because the Commissioners were already ordered by us in the letter of 15 December, whenever, according to the written order sent to them from His Highness Mhaniet Tackie Chan, they obtain no proper reprisal and receive restitution of the said tomans, to break camp from over there to avoid further extortions and insults and to come hither with the ship De Duif; thus for those reasons it was thought fit provisionally to dismiss that person until a further occasion. The affairs of Bushehr being concluded, the Honorable Authority made a beginning with those of Isfahan, and first brought for rereading the writings received on 8 November last, which were dispatched hither previously on 17 October, the same being accompanied by the trade booklets of the year 174½, which after comparison were found to balance and agree with the general ledgers, whereby to our regret we came to see From Persia under date 29 July 1743 that the expenses this year, mounting to a sum of ƒ 20720:16:8. whereas those of last year, namely 1740/1741, were only ƒ 13973:19:8. thus in this financial year more expenses: ƒ 6746:17:— The profits this year there amount to ƒ 23342:11:— whereas in the year 1740/1741, since there was no trade, nothing was gained: ƒ —:—:— Consequently this year more gained there: ƒ 23342:11:— The expenses subtracted from this at ƒ 20720:16:8 there still remains a net surplus profit of ƒ 2621:14:8. From Persia under date 29 June 1743 might be kept, but because these expenses have already been charged to their account according to our resolution of the ultimate May of the past year, it was therefore merely deemed appropriate to strictly recommend frugality to the residents once again, as has already occurred several times, in the hope that we may thereby see the burdens change somewhat in the future. Because no consideration at all was given to the written petition presented to this council by the provisional head Aalmis, nor to the declaration made by letter that, due to poverty, it would be impossible, indeed completely out of his power, to be able to pay the m=s 8907: — at ƒ3785:9:8 which he has squandered on 4 entertainments, and which, as just stated, have been disapproved and ordered that these funds must be refunded to the treasury, but rather to his request: that whenever we might not be able to resolve thereon, his humble request and transmitted petition might then From Persia under date 29 June 1743 be crowned with a favorable recommendation and forwarded to their High Right Noble Excellencies. It is also answered in the cited letter how the residents of Spahan were compelled, in order to nullify a certain pretext of having to present 12 pieces of broadcloth, to present the aforementioned Governor Hattum Chan and his cousin Goeloedeet with gifts to the amount of f 204:18:8 at cost price and f 528:4:4 at selling price, as the gift list inserted here below further indicates. Account of gifts consisting of the spices to be mentioned: pepper, cardamom, chintz ambersia, moeramath, and batidhaer, which have been given at this time to the governor of this city, Hattem Chan, and his nephew, his mace-bearer; seeing that they made a request for 12 pieces of broadcloth for the king, as also that the Honorable Company traded in this here, but as this was denied by His Highness, he took it ill and said to monsieur Elias, the Honorable Company's interpreter, that this was for the king, and marveled that, since we were only servants of the Honorable Company's employees in Gamron, we dared to refuse him, whereas at Gamron he had never demanded anything but what was granted to him. But despite all that was told to him by the said interpreter, he would give no credit, and said that such excuses were known to him to be quite otherwise, etc., saying further that the interpreter should only see to bringing this to him towards evening. to Persia under the date of 29 June 1743. to grant permission for its return hither, because it is better that it be done thus than that the same lie suffocating in the warehouses over there. By the aforementioned letters the said ministers come to excuse themselves regarding the extraordinary dearness of the dry capers and further drugs purchased in the year 1740, with the assurance that in truth those goods were not to be obtained for less than what was made known in the invoice at that time, and that no miscalculation or error was committed therein, but rather that the same were bought and assessed 13 percent dearer than by them by a Muscovite resident and a French doctor named Mr Galiber, and that up to a quantity of 70 cargas with which they then departed for Muscovy; and since this is true and certain, their Honors wish to hope that they may be and remain liberated from the ill suspicion that their High Noble Mightinesses have conceived regarding this matter. That the introduction of his High Nobility, the High Noble, Right Honorable Lord Johannes Tedens as Governor-General had been effected, the said servants also came to inform us; but since instead of sending us an original signed resolution thereof, as they were ordered by letters dated the ultimo July of last year, they sent us a sworn statement, and this is contrary not only to our order but also to the esteemed order of their High Noble Mightinesses, it was therefore approved and resolved to send the said statement back thither, and to refer them to the ancient examples of their predecessors and to the introductions of their High Noble Mightinesses, the Noble, Right Honorable Lord Governors Mr Dirk van Cloon, Abraham Patras, and Adriaan Valckenier, done in the expectation of obtaining thereby a satisfactory original signed resolution. And since the servants requested orders on how to act, the decision was therefore made to hand these affairs over to the Honorable College of Justice as belonging there, since we in this council dare not meddle with such affairs; no doubt such orders as the nature of the matter requires will be established and given by their Honors. Yet since none of us could maintain that this had been caused through carelessness or through the negligence of the skipper, but solely through God's weather and wind, the same was consequently discharged from any compensation for this, and the lost items were approved to be written off. And as the cargo had become wet for the most part because of the said heavy weather, this was immediately reported to the aforementioned Duke Abol Hassan Chan, with the request that he please send vessels for unloading as soon as possible, as otherwise that small vessel ran the risk of bursting from the swelling of the grains, etc. But notwithstanding this, the naib of the city, Mhamed Bacquer Beecq, came in the name of the oft-mentioned Chan, or governor of this city, to request that the said small vessel might resume its journey once more to Musquette as quickly as possible with the grains on board, since His From Persia, under date 29 Iuny 1743 His aforementioned Highness had sailed thither with the King's fleet. Further, under Your Honors' permission, we refer to the report made regarding this in anno praeterito and believe hereby also to have complied with Your Honors' intention, wherefore we dare to assume the name of being and remaining, below stood, Honorable Commanding Lord and Lords, lower, Your Honors' obedient and dutiful servants, was signed, Willem Antonij van Jongstal, and Elias de Poorter, in the middle, in the presence of us, signed, Cornelis Bijlevelt, Coenraad Logeman, and Pieter Roeloffsen, in margin, Gamron this 10 September 1742, alongside the head, exhibited and served in the Council of Policy at Gamron the 12 October 1742, signed, Jacobus Bijlevelt, secretary, agrees, was signed, Antonius van Nes, sworn clerk.
