From Persia, 29 June 1743 has been the Persians accorded such honor, or not. From Persia, 29 June 1743 of moneys newly dispatched for the realm. kept by the Commissioners for an emergency fund, whereas by them with the ship De Duijf to this place in various species were deducted mamudis 157421: ƒ6903:18:8, and as they indeed needed the said moneys for their daily expenses, we therefore approved that transaction in the session of 31 May; however, they shall also be ordered that whenever the treasury, through the trade, has a pretty penny to keep, they must then send those moneys by the first English opportunity to this place, in order not to be encumbered with cash in the event of an unexpected contingency. By the Commissioners, at the request of the lord Hassan Alie Beeq, two lanterns and a compass were taken from the ship De Duijf for the service of a new post made there for the King; and since those small goods were testified by the skipper Willem Nooseman From Persia, 29 June 1743 shall be ordered to have with the principal to be well spared, and such minor conveniences could not well be refused, it was therefore accommodated to them in the session of 31 May; yet the Commissioners shall be ordered not to be so liberal in the future with any equipment or other ship's stores, but that such requests must consistently be turned down. The Spahan Residents, along with their letters of 17 October and 2 November of the past year, have sent us a duplicate set of their trade journals of the year 174 1/2, which upon confrontation with the general ledgers corresponded in agreement; and having been resumed by decree of 16 January of the current year, the profit and loss account was found closed with an excess profit of ƒ23342:11:—; but on the other hand, the comparison placed at the front of the journal showed that the expenses of that book-year were such that after subtraction of the expenses, the profits amounted only to a small sum of ƒ2621:14:8. The expenses this year, as stated, were ƒ20720:16:8. And those of the past year or 1740/1 only: ƒ13973:19:8. Consequently, they are more this year by ƒ6746:17:—, amounting to ƒ20726:16:8. His Majesty also shows himself very disturbed and astonished that some lowland regents such as Imom Werdiechan, Alie Sulthoen, and the Sea Admiral Mhamed Tackiechan have dared to presume to cause so many troubles to us and our people, and that he, Mhamed Tackiechan, did not provide against this or make those evil doings known. The performance of their or Turkish faith introduced into his lands, as well as published in writing in the mosques, the reasons why he comes to do so, since he says he was raised from generation to generation in the Sunni faith, and now has found by experience that the same is the pure Mohametan religion, but that on the contrary the Shia faith was merely a religion composed by King Shah Ismael, which was supposed to have been devised solely by that monarch in order to find an occasion for war with the Turks, and because he wished to unite with them again, as well as to remove all contrary means, that therefore he ordered the daily prayers performed by the mullahs in the mosques, they shall have to add thereto Omar, Osman and Abubaker, which three are held by the Persians to be impostors, but by the Turks to be the true followers of Mohamed. This command has already, according to report received from Spahan dated 5 May of the past year, been published there and in almost all the cities of this realm, not without indignation and a great dismay among the common people, yet until now no one has been found bold enough to oppose this order; how it will go in the future must be awaited. The city of Musquetta, together with its castles and forts, practically impregnable to this nation, have finally been surrendered by the Musquet Imam Seyf bein Sulthoen and slaves to the notorious and sinister Mohamed Tackie Chan; which strongholds are kept occupied by two-thirds Persians and one-third Arabs; Seyf has been restored to his former rule; the King's fleet, which consists of 13 capital three-masted, and a large number of two- and one-masted vessels, has long lain in the bay of Mattra half a league west of Musquetta, where Mohamed Tackie Chan has also maintained his residence ashore; but now that cunning duke, with the aforementioned naval force to the aid of the Commander-in-Chief Calbalie Chan, has arrived at Sahaar, by which army commander he was regaled for a whole day and night, hospitably entertained, as well as fetched from the beach with an extra great ceremony and led into the camp. Whether he will now also get this remainder of the Arabs into his power through this must be awaited in time; at least the Hula Arabs have been completely eradicated by him, and the ship the Fatti Shahij, on which all their hopes rested, was lost near Cape Raselgate, having intended to flee to Mocha; only 10 to 12 men thereof, together with the head of the discontented, Sheikh Rhama, were saved, who immediately fled into the mountains, without it having been possible to discover them until now, despite whatever effort was made. Sheikh Abdulsheik, who had absconded with two ships of His Majesty and the wife of the old well-known Sheikh Rasjet, has also surrendered himself, together with the loot, which consists of very great treasures, to His Highness; according to the rumors, the wealth that the said duke conquered with Musquetta and Mattra together could hardly be named; the King was so gladdened by this conquest that he bestowed upon the courier who brought the news and returned these days, a very heavy robe of honor and 20 tomans in cash, as well as wrote an exceptionally friendly letter adorned with very much praise to Mohamed Tackie Chan. Persia, 29 June 1743 Continuation. Mhamet TackiecChan, who was Mustoufi-al-Mamalek, stayed his hand in extorting presents and money from poor people who had requests to submit to the King through their master. The remaining three will have to answer for the English ship purchase, since His Majesty (as is believed, through CalbalieChan) was informed by letter of the latest intrigue with the English and TackieChan. At least His Highness recently obtained an order to return the two ships bought for 6000 thomams to the English, or else to pay them back two thousand thomams, or 85000:—:— guilders, because according to what was written to him, those ships were worth no more. And in such manner, since one of the two, named Penbroocke, was dashed to pieces against the rocks during TackieChan’s voyage to Musquetta, the English and the said His Highness have consequently (though underhand) paid back the demanded moneys. And Generalissimo Calbalie Chan is still lying before the castle of Sahaan with a formidable army of 4 to 6000 men, without having been able to accomplish anything as yet. 2000 men who had been sent out by him under the Lar Khan Ala Werdie Chan on reconnaissance and to collect contributions, were surprised at night by the Arabs, and all except 10 to 12 men, who saved themselves by flight, were massacred. This caused very great consternation in the Persian army, but good courage among the Arabs. The said general was so embittered by this encounter that he declared he would rather die before he would abandon the castle. By his order, chappars have been sent in all directions to recruit men and bring them to him; many gardens have also been laid out by the army with all kinds of vegetables, so that from this it may well be inferred that he is not yet minded to depart so quickly, although we believe that the vehement heat will indeed constrain him thereto and grant the Arabs their freedom. A few days before the arrival of TackieChan, the Arabs, numbering around 12,000 men, also took a chance by night on the rearguard of that general’s army, burned very many tents and baggage, and likewise massacred a number of sleeping Persians. But as soon as the sardar and the men were mounted and had marched against those birds of prey, they took their retreat to the mountains with great haste, leaving behind everything and about 2 to 3000 men, both dead and prisoners, of which latter some have already been sold here as slaves. How this enterprise will now turn out further must be awaited from time to time, but we hope for the best for the welfare of the Honourable Company. According to the rumours, Mhamed Tackie Chan has obtained secret orders from His Majesty to arrange that here, at Congo and Boucher, in the latter part of September or the beginning of October, he has so many ships in store that 12,000 riders, with their horses and baggage, can obtain transport, since, as is said, he intends to pay a visit to the Qatif Arabs in order thus to punish them for the assistance they gave to the Huwala Arabs at the time of their rebellion. 185 From Persia, 29 June 1743 via the Cornelia the outlays of the interpreter are refunded to him were properly remedied, at a cost according to the specification submitted by the purveyor of 872 mamudis or ƒ 370:12:— and which expenditure, being unavoidable but very necessary, was admitted by us in the resolution of 16 January, on which day it was also approved to have paid to the interpreter Ibrahim Sahid 368 mamudis or ƒ 151:8:— because he clearly demonstrated in a specification drawn up thereof that this expenditure had occurred in the reception and escorting of departing and arriving grandees in the service of the Honorable Company; and as some highly necessary repairs to the Honorable Company's lodge had been made by the purveyor, he therefore presented at the session of 17 March his half-yearly repair account amounting to ƒ 2462:10:8: together with the report stating the remedied defects, and of which report we have already had the honor to offer the copy via the Cornelia most obediently to Your Right Excellencies according to the forwarded report. From Persia, 29 June 1743 the purveyor is authorized to purchase 2 head of stallion horses a stallion horse arrives and as these accounts upon review were found not to be too excessive, and each of us was furthermore an eyewitness to the actual remedying of the items listed therein, this expenditure was consequently approved for settlement; and furthermore, according to the resolution of 1 April, the purveyor was ordered to do his best upon the arrival of Mohamed Tackie Chan or at any other opportunity to purchase 2 head of fine stallion horses between 2 and 3, or else 3 to 4 years old, of a good height, for the Surat directorate, as those ministers requested this of us by letter of 15 April of the past year. Your Right Honourables having most obediently been informed that the claim of the Honourable Company on account of the estate of the late head of Isfahan, the Merchant Nicolaus Schorer, deceased, upon the inheritance of a deceased Armenian merchant Khoja Melik, currently still amounting to Thomans 18:– or ƒ 765: —: —, and which the attorneys of the said Armenian in turn transferred and assigned to this Council upon the widow of the Honourable Company's late interpreter Francois Sahid; therefore, during the meeting on the 27th of January of the current year, it was deliberated and approved to order the Isfahan residents by outgoing letters to render all possible assistance to the aforementioned attorneys, to the end that they may speedily settle their outstanding affairs with the said widow, so that the estate of Schorer, and through the same the Honourable Company, may obtain its lawful share of the said Thomans 18:–. From Persia under date 29 June 1743 Resolution taken in the Council of Policy at Gamron, Wednesday 31 October Anno 1742. Upon the summons of the Honorable Commander, the members of the Council having appeared and taken their seats at the usual meeting place, His Honor made known that the vessel the Cornelia was now ready to continue its voyage to Batavia; wherefore the minor letters of this day's date, which are directed to the Honorable High Mighty Lords Majores and their Right Excellencies the Lords of the High Indies Government, and concluded via Malabar and Ceylon to the Fatherland and Batavia, were to be dispatched by the mentioned vessel; and he submitted them in this session for exhibition, revision, and signature according to ancient custom. Mention was also made here regarding the inspection and mustering of the frequently mentioned vessel De Cornelia, in which, according to the report submitted by the fiscal and two judicial commissioners, no private trade was found and upon its mustering also no absentees, but it was seen that the keel had a draft of 17 feet at the fore-stem and 19 feet at the stern; and since that report showed that the commission had been completely fulfilled and had attained its conclusion according to the orders, on that account its insertion was deemed unnecessary. From Persia, dated 29 June 1743. the entire mass was subject to underweight, which decision will be communicated to the Commissioner in the outgoing letter; likewise, that for the sufficient reasons given for it, the refreshments supplied to that vessel up to m=s 922 at f 391.17:— were approved by us, as the poor deckhands stationed thereon certainly needed such because of their frail bodily condition; and secondly also because this supply did not go beyond the rule or custom:— The specification received from there for the months of April, May, June, July, and August was, upon examination and according to the testimony of the trade bookkeeper Christoffel de Haan, found not to be excessive but according to old custom, amounting in ordinary charges to m=s 2831 at f 1203:3:8 and in extra ditto to 809 at 343:16:8, or together m=os 3640 at f 1547:—:—.
