From Persia, 29 June 1743. cloths and only 5 pieces of perpetuanas were sold, to transport what was brought on 11 August and to send it towards Isfahan, in order to simply let them go for their purchase price, even if some loss on charges, etc., might fall upon them, in the hope that they might thereby alleviate the distress caused by the new English Company newly established at Gilan—concerning which we shall have the honor to inform Your High Nobilities further in the continuation of this—and make the stay difficult for those newcomers, which would also be well to wish for the Honorable Company's interests, since the crude Persians, who until now know no better than that the English and we conduct trade for our sovereigns, will thereby become too wise and much more arrogant; at least those new English neighbors and the countermeasures taken against them by our old competitors are the true motive that not a single piece of cloth, and of the perpetuanas only 5 pieces of scarlet at 165 mamoodis or f 70:2:8 the piece, or with 33 1/3 per cent, were sold. 87 From Persia, 29 June 1743. Also sold too dearly. there being for the present not the least hope of a market, the more so because the cloths sent are extraordinarily expensive, and by far not as good in quality or virtue as those sent hither in former times by the favor of Your High Nobilities; it being found upon calculation that if the ell were sold at 28 1/16 mamoodis on average, first a generous 50 per cent according to the books could be gained, whereas the fine English cloths are retailed by that nation by the English yard, which is 1 1/2 Dutch ells, at 27 and 28 mamoodis; with the perpetuanas matters stand similarly, for the piece is sold by them from 100 to 105 mamoodis, whereas those of the Honorable Company will have to be sold on average at 133 mamoodis or f 56:10:8 the piece, if 50 per cent after deduction of brokerage is to remain; but it is true that the Honorable Company's assortment is very superior in sort and quality, yet in width 1/8 covid and in length 5 ells narrower and shorter From Persia, 29 June 1743. In case of impossibility, a little leeway is requested. shorter than the English perpetuanas, to which the merchant pays considerable attention, as they sell them again upcountry to the tailors, for whom it immediately makes a great difference whether they can make 6 or only 5 cabayas from a piece; for at the sale the common man looks more to the cheapness than to the quality of the goods. But notwithstanding the aforesaid unexpected circumstance of our English competitors regarding the import and transport to Isfahan of such a large quantity of cloths and perpetuanas, we shall endeavor not to let those of the Honorable Company lie unsold; however, we humbly request, if it is not possible to stipulate 50 per cent for them, that we may then be permitted to use a little leeway and concession, and rather dispose of the same with a small profit than to expose them to ruin in this extraordinarily bad and all-destroying climate. From Persia, the 29th of June 1743 to return fine cassas, the painted lenços and also the ditto cambays are neither wanted here nor in Bassoura; but of the remaining sample cloths, some have been requested in our present outgoing requisition, because quite a sweet profit has been made on them here and in Bassoura, as we have just most humbly demonstrated to Your High Nobilities. The 712 pieces of fine cassas returned from Bassoura and Boucher, amounting to 712 pieces, are, in accordance with our resolution of the 11th of April—since no more than mamoodies 550, or f 23:7:8, or 41 13/20 per cent according to the books could be obtained for them—returned to Your High Nobilities (subject to your honored approval) by the bearer hereof, in the company of the 20 pieces of super fine Coast betilles sent back from the first-mentioned place, item 700 pieces of gingham drongam, and 176 1/4 lb of eaglewood, in accordance with the respected order, being unmarketable here. But of the 24 pieces of Bengal sample cloths, we have retained 12 pieces because they can still be traded at Spahan with a reasonable profit, until such time and season as some merchants will come to buy them, as soon as they shall be provided therewith by the favor of Your High Nobilities. Meanwhile, we most obediently assure Your High Nobilities that no trade goods will be ordered by us to be sent from one office to the other except those upon which one can securely calculate that, after deducting freight, risk, etc., a notable profit is still to be made for the Honorable Company, in order thus to comply with the true order of Your High Nobilities. But regarding the copper trade, of which Your High Nobilities do not wish us to refrain from entirely, we fear that there is little prospect; because since our competitors, the English and French merchants, negotiate heavily in it, the price of that mineral is daily rising through their bustle. A small quantity of 2600 lb at mamoodies 15 1/2 or f 6:4:4 the 6 lb of cake copper was offered to us here, but we dared not accept the same because of its excessive costliness; since upon investigation it was found that in Cormandel, according to the sales prices written from there, 36 1/4 per cent would be lost. Therefore, the same has also been turned down. But in the outgoing letters, we shall order the servants of Bassoura and Boucher strongly to endeavor, upon any occurring opportunity in that trade, when they can see or calculate any profit thereon, not to refrain from it, but that they shall prefer that mineral over the Persian coin specie. The 4000 lb of Ceylon coffee that remained here has been traded by us at mamoodies 8 the bild, which is at 98 per cent gross profit; and the Bassoura servants, according to their letter of the 28th of February, are also of good hope to sell the 2000 lb recently sent to them shortly with an excess profit of 50 per cent. But the Boucher commissioners, by letter of the 30th of January last, make difficulty regarding its speedy vent, because upon opening some bales, they have found those beans to be entirely brown and poorly conditioned, whereby the hope given by them in the letter of the 7th of October has practically vanished, because, as they say, the merchant is deterred thereby, and consequently there is no longer any demand for it. The 1736 7/8 pounds of Java coffee beans that had been lying unmarketable at Bassoura since the year 1739 were finally traded at mamoodies 14, or f 5:19:— the man of 25 lb, which is with 17 3/8 per cent profit; and 309 pounds of Japanese camphor at mamoodies 116 23/309, or f 49:6:10 1/180 equal weight, which is with 56 1/5 per cent ample profit; which we most obediently trust will not appear displeasing to Your High Nobilities, wherefore we flatter ourselves with a gracious approval. Among the trade annexes, two pieces of copies of protocolaire accounts successively under the ultimate of February and the 31st of May are respectfully presented to Your High Nobilities, held with the Honorable Company's brokers regarding the state of the cash (being their honored account), by which latter Your High Nobilities are clearly shown the contents of the Honorable Company's cash up to that date, which according to the books comprises a nominal capital of mamoodies 1434907:— or f 609835:4:8. From Persia the 29th of June 1743 A petition having been presented to His Majesty to be permitted to conduct the free silk trade on the old footing, it was impossible to know what would follow upon it. If such were now permitted to us and all cash had presently been returned to Batavia, the Company would sometimes be obliged to take up money at a higher interest. Secondly, that the aforementioned person, upon receipt of the Basra letter dated the 29th of March and the European war news mentioned therein, felt constrained to persevere in his previous opinion, because (which God forbid) such a small vessel might easily fall into enemy hands, and thus in an irresponsible manner a severe blow could be dealt to the Company. Also, upon rereading the resolution taken on the date of the 7th of June 1741, such cogent reasons were found to have been alleged by skipper Jan Verstraten regarding the impossibility of a ship departing in this monsoon without being exposed to extraordinarily great danger, that there was reason to abandon the departure for the present. Let alone to expose, in addition, such a considerable capital on such a small charter, poorly manned, and that at this time of the year, to such danger as had been reviewed in that resolution, were it not out of consideration for the license so benignly granted recently by Your High Nobilities to be allowed to dispatch the ships without regard to the monsoon. On which account he found himself obliged to persevere with the dispatch of the ship, stating that he could also give his consent to send with the same 3 to 4 tons of treasure, all in all calculated, but no more, since the remaining funds could be sent without any peril upon the departure of the Batavian ship expected here, whereby Your High Nobilities could then, as well as presently, be set at ease regarding the state of the treasury. These alleged reasons were considered by each member of the council to be fundamental and well-founded, and after further deliberation, weighing and re-weighing, From Persia the 29th of June 1743 and having also read over once again with great attention the relevant passage from the aforementioned letter, it was thereupon resolved by the members of the council to let that vessel depart as soon as possible in God's name via Tuticorin for Batavia with no more than 3 to 4 tons of treasure, goods and cash counted together. However, the authority fully persevered in the previous resolution of the 11th of April for the motives cited therein. Meanwhile, the interested parties hope and wish that if Your High Nobilities will please take into favorable consideration the pressing motives which caused them to resile from the repeatedly mentioned resolution of the date of the 11th of April, their prudent precaution, exercised in the subject case for the well-being of the Honorable Company, will be praised by Your High Nobilities rather than if they had acted recklessly with the Honorable Company's money. We have, in our humble report of the 31st of October, brought to the honored notice of Your High Excellencies that between the Commandment of Malabar and this Directorate a certain difference of ƒ 147: 13: — arose pro dato, for such reasons as were humbly expressed therein. But now we have the honor to notify that the same has been decided upon the wise request of the Right Honorable and Most Respected Lord of Gollonesse, made by letter of the 14th of January, since the then serving Warehouse Master Christoffel de Haan, and the ordinary appointed Under-Merchants Gerrit Hendrik Terre and Egbertus Legrand, confirmed the truth of the findings of that packing under solemn oath in the meeting on the 11th of April. Having been requested by the Surat ministers by letter of the 30th of August of the year 1741 for the delivery of the goods still missing from the previous requisition, being only 12 chests of Shiraz wine and 50 lb of puni-mellen, we exerted all our ability to that end, and finally on the 23rd of March of last year an English opportunity was found by which the said wine was dispatched. From Persia, the 29th of June 1743. Said wine is charged back to this Directorate. Yet, to our greatest surprise, the said ministers sold that cargo there publicly at a loss of ƒ 140: 6: —, which, together with a carboy broken during the voyage amounting to ƒ 36: 19: 8, making together ƒ 177: 5: 8, was charged to this Directorate by letter of the 8th of July 1742; under the pretext that those beverages are only demanded annually as emoluments for the rulers and for the entertainment of the native governors. On which account those ministers say they cannot see fit to take for their account any goods that were requisitioned from us by their predecessors five years ago; but since that liquid was not supplied out of our own initiative, but at their request as humbly stated above, we consequently resolved at the meeting on the 16th of January last to debit that amount back to the said Directorate, together with the reasons therefor, as has already taken place by letter of the 11th of April last, resting in the hope that this action of ours may be justified by Your High Excellencies. From Persia, the 29th of June 1743. Trade books. The received Basra books were found in order after resumption. Regarding the excessive reductions allowed to them. From Persia, the 29th of June 1743 named and credible Armenian merchants, together with a petition directed by him as well as a humble Sahid to your High Excellencies in all humility for the relief of the aforesaid mamoodies 2500 at f 1062:10:–; and since the same is an unprecedented case, and one which any person might expect whenever falling into the hatred of the government, while moreover the same befell him in the service of the Honorable Company, we therefore join him in humbly beseeching your High Excellencies for a gracious remission. Meanwhile, we have ordered the servants to complain to His Highness Agmed Basja about that godless conduct and extortion at a favorable opportunity and when no difficulties might reside therein, since if such were not done, those self-seeking and God-forsaken regents would only be encouraged to commit more such, and possibly even worse, tyranny against the Honorable Company's servants with impunity. Having brought to your High Excellencies' respected knowledge in our recent detailed report the authorization granted by us for the repair of certain horse equipment, likewise the exchange and sending hither of the old copper tools remaining at that office, the same was also executed by them, there having been spent for the repair of a cutlass with silver mounting mamoodies 115 or f 48:17:8; besides this, f 19:2:8 was lost thereon in melting, etc.; and for the purchase of 6 pieces of new and the repair of 3 old copper works, likewise the repair of 5 pieces of horse equipment, there was spent in all mamoodies 549 or f 233:6:8; and as we cannot conceive otherwise than that necessity caused these expenses, the same were therefore also passed on the 11th of April. And further, the servants' current salary accounts were debited at 9 stivers per mamoodie for such mamoodies 2467 at f 1048:9:8 as they received in two installments from the treasury; and whereas various defects on the Honorable Company's lodge there were noticed under the last of August, and which according to the statement of the secunde Willem du Mee and the bookkeeper Cornelis Sonnevelt are to be remedied by an expenditure of mamoodies 1150:– at f 488:15:–, they came to request authorization concerning this; and since it was assumed by us that these defects merely required a necessary repair, permission was therefore granted to them for that purpose, as well as to be allowed to have such defects repaired for mamoodies 800 or f 340:–:– as were caused on the 13th of March by two heavy earthquakes, likewise extraordinary downpours, hail, etc., since the necessity was corroborated by a report dated the 4th of April with an offer of oath; upon another report of the annual inventory of the Honorable Company's real assets remaining there under the last of August past, it having been found that the copper drinking kettle of the horses came to require some repair, and for which they requested permission, the same was granted to them by letter of the 19th of April; at which time it was also accepted as communicated that, upon receiving the honored order of the 30th of September of the past year, the comparison of the ordinary against the standard weight took place and no defects were discovered.
