We have had the honor to receive Your Excellency's and Your Honors' missive of the 22nd of March last, serving in reply to ours of the 18th of February preceding, and thank Your Excellency and Your Honors for the communication given therein of the orders sent for the delivery to us for this year of a quantity of 700 chests of opium and 23000 maunds of saltpetre, which we accordingly have ordered our agents at Patna to receive from those of the Honorable English East India Company. We shall consider ourselves obliged to Your Excellency and Your Honors if, after the completion of the revision of the trial of Ensign Morris cum suis, we might be favored with its outcome, in order to be able, in due time, to give proper notice thereof to our superiors. We found ourselves honored yesterday with Your Excellency's and Your Honors' missive of the day before, containing the communication of the safe arrival at Calcutta of the Right Honorable Lord Charles, Earl of Cornwallis, and the assumption by His Lordship of the General Government on behalf of the Honorable English East India Company in Bengal, for which we hereby express our thanks in the most polite manner. We also request permission to sincerely congratulate His Lordship on both matters, and to wish His Lordship in all respects a happy and prosperous government, paired with all pleasures that can make life agreeable. We have had the honor to receive Your Excellency's and Your Honors' missive of the 11th instant, containing a request for tracing a certain person named La Cosse, who, according to the charges brought against him, is suspected of murder committed on a native; immediately upon receipt of that letter, we issued the necessary orders to conduct a precise investigation after the same, not only in our colony, but also on our ships lying down the river; however, according to the reports received, he was nowhere to be found, and we must therefore assume that he is no longer under our flag or protection. We have the honor to be with all high esteem, below was written, and was signed as before, in the margin, Hooghly, the 24th of December 1786. To the Honorable Lord Frederik Le Fevre, President, and the Gentlemen Members of the Council on behalf of His Majesty the King of Denmark at Frederiksnagore. Honorable Lord and Gentlemen, Whereas we have been requested by the Court of Justice here to transmit to Your Honors a ruling issued by that Court on the petitions of some of our inhabitants, by which attachment has been granted on the proceeds of a house sold in this place, formerly belonging to the estate of Captain Lasboom, with notice to the executors of that estate, Messrs. Duntzfeld and da Cruz, who reside under your jurisdiction at Serampore, to appear, if they see fit, either in person or by attorneys, before the said Court of Justice here on the 18th of this current month of October, in order to witness proceedings toward the decreeing of that granted attachment, we therefore take the liberty, in compliance therewith, to offer Your Honors a copy of the said ruling alongside this, with the friendly request that Your Honors may be pleased to have the same delivered to the aforementioned Messrs. Honorable Sir and Sirs, We have the honor to inform your Honors that the Right Honorable Charles Earl of Cornwallis arrived at Fort William today, and that, in accordance with the appointment of the Honorable Court of Directors, he has assumed the office of Governor-General of Bengal. We therefore request that your Honors will be pleased to make this event known to all persons acting under your authority who may have occasion to correspond with this government. Sir William Jones, one of His Britannic Majesty's Judges, having issued a warrant founded on the depositions of eight witnesses for the apprehension of the person named La Cosse, who escaped from a guard that was bringing him down from Dinapore to be tried in the Supreme Court of Judicature on suspicion of having murdered a native named Chingi, we request that, as an act of public and general justice, your Honors will cause inquiry to be made whether the said La Cosse is concealing himself at any of your factories or living under the protection of your flag, and that, in case he should be discovered, your Honors will cause him to be seized, apprising us thereof at the same time; whereupon the proper officers will be sent to take charge of him and convey him to Calcutta, in order that he may be tried in the Supreme Court for the heinous offence laid to his charge. We had the honor of receiving Your Highborn's esteemed letter of the 5th of this month and, in accordance with Your Honor's request, made known to Messrs. Duntsfeld and da Crus, as executors of the estate of the late Captain Lasboom, the seizure granted by the Council of Justice at Chinsura on the amount of the purchase money for Captain Lasboom's house there. We do not doubt in the least that Your Highborn will be pleased to take such measures as the circumstances of the case require, and we have the honor always to remain with high esteem.
