Illustrious, Highborn Prince and Lord, and Noble, Highly Honorable Gentlemen, The ship Alkemade, having departed from Jaggernaijkpoeram on the 3rd of October following with our humble letters of the 7th of September last, with a cargo of ƒ779199. 9. — and having set its course for the Fatherland, we have no doubt that, according to our sincere wish, it will have arrived safely and without mishap at the desired harbor, and that our conduct, as well as that of the chief officers of Jaggernaijkpoeram regarding that vessel, may have the fortune of obtaining the respected approval of Your Noble, Highly Honorable Lordships. In this confidence, we take the liberty of enclosing herewith the duplicate of our aforementioned letters respectfully presented to Your Noble, Highly Honorable Lordships, along with copies of the letters addressed to Your Noble, Highly Honorable Lordships by the aforementioned servants at Jaggernaijkpoeram accompanying that vessel. Respectfully referring to these, we express our regret that that vessel could not have been dispatched with a larger number of fine linens, or that fewer coarse cloths had been included in the cargo, in order that the same might have been brought to the sum of 9 tons of gold, or thereabouts, as determined by Their Excellencies the Noble High Indian Government. However, this could not be done on account of the small quantity of fine linens held in stock at Jaggernaijkpoeram, because, due to the early change of the southern monsoon, the red linens or patterned goods that were ready at Nisampatnam could not be transported to Jaggernaijkpoeram early enough, and those that were already transported arrived too late, so that the greater part thereof could not serve for the return ship. Furthermore, we find ourselves obliged humbly to bring to the knowledge of Your Noble, Highly Honorable Lordships that among the cargo of the aforesaid return vessel Alkemade are to be found two bales of Pulicat rumals, checked Indian variety, No 101 and 102, measuring 1 7/8 ells square, but which, by mistake through haste, were stated by the Pulicat servants on the invoice as 1 ¾ ells and billed as such, and thus cost ƒ182. 14. — more than they actually should. Furthermore, we take the liberty to note herein that, with the safe arrival of the ships Woestduijn and Gijnwensch at the island of Ceylon, we had the high honor on the 7th of September and 15th of October last to find ourselves honored with the receipt of Your Noble, Highly Honorable Lordships' highly respected original and duplicate letters of the 18th of October, 14th of November, and 16th of December of the past year 1771, together with the enclosures that accompanied the first two aforementioned letters according to the register of the 6th of December. We offer our humble gratitude for the relief of uncoined gold dispatched for the benefit of this Government, both with those two vessels and via the ship Ritthem—the latter having been sent as far as the Cape and there transshipped onto the ship Gijnwensch. through Your Right Honourable Worships' favour, to erect and put in order for the service of the church here, which was sent in the past year via the ship 'slandswelvaren, we have written to the Ceylon ministers and requested them to send that man hither, if he should still be alive; upon whose appearance here, if he is not inclined to continue here, we shall deal with him as Your Right Honourable Worships have been pleased to command us, although he is not needed here, since the organist of this place, possessing the requisite capacity, has erected that organ with the utmost accuracy; whilst in the meantime we express our humble gratitude to Your Right Honourable Worships for Your most favourable care in that regard. Furthermore, there has been paid out to the Assistant Jan Willem Luijken the sum of ƒ322. —. —. counted for his benefit into the Company's treasury at the Amsterdam chamber. The extract received from the most venerated General Missive of Your Right Honourable Worships to Their Right Excellencies the Honourable High Indies Government at Batavia, dated 2 October 1771, having been respectfully answered by us in the margin, is inserted into the advices dispatched by us on this occasion to the aforementioned Honourable High Indies Government, to which we humbly refer ourselves, furthermore having the honour to note herein, with respect to the received Demand for Returns for the coming year 1773, that the same having been immediately distributed across this main settlement and the subordinate offices, the contracting thereof has already taken place, both here and at the offices of Sadraspatnam and Portonovo, for the prices last paid, not doubting that this will also have been followed up at the remaining factories of Palliacatta, Palicol, Jaggernaijkpoeram, and Bimilipatnam, though by reason of their great distance we have no definite report thereof as yet. Regarding the completed collection of the closed trading year 1771/2, we offer in all respect to Your Right Honourable Worships the formal answered demands, appended with two separate statements, according to which the procurement of the cloths and linens has amounted in total to a number of 2596 packs, being thus 11 ½ bales fewer than the year before; whilst regarding the distribution of the aforementioned new petition for 1773, we respectfully refer to the provisional answer to the same, which also accompanies this letter. As the Palliacatta merchants have finally refused the collection and delivery of the 7 packs of Bethilles Ternatanis demanded from there, for such reasons as are stated in our Resolution of the 9th of January of the current year and the dispatched advices to their High Excellencies of the 15th of the said month, extracts of which we attach hereto for Your High Noble, Highly Honorable's esteemed contemplation, we have, attempting to supply that deficiency, in accordance with what was resolved at our session of the 17th of June last past, had some sample pieces of that assortment made by the merchants here, and the same, upon examination against an old Palliacatta sample piece from the year 1727, having been found quite reasonable, both in quality and threads, although the latter, or the threads, were not found in all respects as fine as the Palliacatta sample was, there is nonetheless a great difference in price compared to that which was paid at Palliacatta, for a pack of 100 pieces, 30 long and 2¼ Cobidos wide, cost there 175 pagodas or 787 florins 10 stivers, but the merchants here demanded no more than 155 pagodas or 697 florins 10 stivers for it, thus giving a favorable or cheaper difference of 20 pagodas or 90 florins, as also 8 pagodas 8 fanams or 37 florins 10 stivers on a similar pack of 3 Cobidos wide, for the same costs 233 pagodas 8 fanams or 1050 florins at Palliacatta, but here only 225 pagodas or 1012 florins 10 stivers, consequently a difference of 11 7/16 percent on the first and a good 3 5/16 on the second assortment, on which grounds we resolved on that day to contract 4 packs thereof for a trial, namely two of 2¼ Cobidos and two of 3 Cobidos wide, of which we now take the liberty, by the bearer hereof, to send one pack of each, in order to perceive how the sale thereof in the Netherlands will turn out, the other half, or the remaining two packs, to be sent to Batavia at the disposal of Their High Excellencies. We have further, with the pleasure of Your High Noble, Highly Honorable, by this vessel granted passage to the Netherlands to the two sons of the merchant relieved to Palliacatta, the Secunde Nicolaas De Joncheere, by name Johan Pieter and Jacob de Joncheere, together with a Christian free boy, the passage money for whom the aforementioned De Joncheere has promised and undertaken to pay upon arriving at Batavia, whither he is to depart by the ship Vreedelueste, according to the esteemed pleasure of the Honorable High Indian Government there. Extract from the demand for returns from India for the year 1772, established the 13th of October 1770. We have for several years recommended to the ministers at Nagapatnam to send to us a proper answer to our demand, both for this and for the other linen-producing offices; but however earnest our recommendations have been, never have we had the pleasure of seeing our wish fulfilled in conformity with them. The answer that we have now lastly received merely contains the manner in which the ministers at the main office have seen fit to divide the fulfillment of our demand for the year 1770 among the subordinate offices, which in no way answers our intention. Although the collection of cloths and linens on the demands for the Homeland and India for the year 1772, compared to that of the year 1771, is now 11.½. packs less than the year before; nevertheless, on the respective demands in this now expired trading year, more has been satisfied than in the past year. For against the demands totaling 2757. packs, namely 1890. for the Homeland and 867. bales for India, 2592. packs have been satisfied; of which 1749. were for the Netherlands and 843. for the Indian regions; thus still short 165. packs, namely 141. for the Homeland and 24. for India. On the other hand, the year before, fully 350. 2/3. packs remained unfulfilled; and consequently, this year there is 185. 2/3. packs less of a shortfall on the demands than in the past year. And had it not been for the necessity of compelling the traders strictly to deliver a better quality of linens, whereby during the sorting of cloths various assortments were rejected and cast out as unacceptable, we would have satisfied the entire demand completely, except for the articles upon which the merchants claim an increase in price and which are mentioned in this justification. Nevertheless, we shall most dutifully remain vigilant that the demands are fulfilled as closely as possible in good and sound sorts, in order to remove Your Most Noble and Right Honorable legitimate complaints. Since in our humble provisional reply under date of 20 September of last year to this now expired demand we have served in all respects and demonstrated in humility how the linens were divided among the offices, we shall, to avoid repetitions and in the hope of Your Most Noble and Right Honorable favorable approval, hold to that and subsequently demonstrate to Your Most Noble and Right Honorable what and how much each of the offices has contributed toward procuring the aforementioned quantity for this year's collection; after having incorporated herein what the chiefs of the subordinate offices have set down and adduced in their respective answered demands for their justification, thus beginning with the main office at Nagapatnam, where 406 packs were assigned to the merchants for delivery, namely 166 for Europe and 240 for India; against this, 392 bales have been delivered by them.

Sadraspatnam, against the 361 packs assigned to that office, being 218 for the Homeland and 143 for India, delivers 344 packs, of which 201 are for Europe and 143 for the Indian Regions, and consequently there remained unfulfilled 17 bales for the Homeland, consisting of: 4 packs of ordinary unbleached Salempoeris 6 packs of ordinary bleached Guinees, and 7 packs of ordinary unbleached Guinees The Chiefs say that the three merchants who trade under surety, and are obligated to pay 10 percent from the funds received for the textile trade toward reducing their old debt, find it difficult to deliver the aforementioned sorts of textiles, because there is otherwise no profit on them, the more so because they must deliver everything for Europe in 1st and 2nd sort, and that if 3rd sort might have been accepted, they would have completely fulfilled the requisition. Portonovo has completely fulfilled the 159 packs allocated to that residency, being 91 for the Homeland and 68 for India. Furthermore, the servants hoped that upon receipt in the Netherlands, the textiles would remove the complaints which Your High Noblenesses, the Highly Esteemed, were pleased to make regarding the previous textiles; and they flattered themselves further that the cloths now fulfilled would bear witness to the zeal and attentiveness with which they strive to perform the dutiful service of their highly honored paymasters. Jaggernaijkpoeram has, of the 732 packs assigned to that factory—namely 663 for the Fatherland and 69 for the Indian regions—supplied 636 bundles, namely 579 for Europe and 57 for India; thus 96 packs remained unfulfilled at the said factory, of which: 84 packs for the Fatherland, namely: 61 packs of checkered Indian-type rumals. 1 pack of all-glass betilles. 7 packs of ordinary bleached salempores. 15 packs of ordinary bleached guinees. 12 packs for India, of which: 4 packs of checkered rumals for Batavia. 4 packs of ordinary bleached salempores for Amboina. 2 packs of ordinary bleached salempores for Padang. 2 packs of ordinary bleached salempores for Adjerhadja. The chiefs of the said factory say, with respect to the 61 packs of checkered rumals delivered short of the demand, that without a price increase there would be no possibility of hoping for a full fulfillment of that assortment in the coming year; but since Their High Excellencies the High Indian Government at Batavia have currently been pleased to grant a 10 percent price increase, the merchants promised to deliver this article as well as other assortments in the coming year. Bimilipatnam has completely fulfilled the 478 packs assigned to that factory, of which 237 were for the Fatherland and 241 for India, which were fully delivered by the chiefs of that factory, and thus met the demand. Having thus shown in detail for each factory how many and which linens are lacking from this demand, adding the reasons why their non-delivery occurred, we hope that Your High Noblenesses and High Worships will also be satisfied with this; and we proceed further to show to what extent each article has been fulfilled, what is lacking from it, and how the collected cloths have been distributed and to which Chamber they have been addressed via the return ship Alkemade, which departed from this Coast for the Netherlands, as well as what was sent from there to Batavia with the ships Leekerlust and Vreedelust, and what further could serve for the elucidation of Your High Noblenesses and High Worships, thus coming in the first place to the article of Calliatour wood. What we have just said concerning the aforesaid article also finds its application to a multitude of other varieties, such as the fine rumals of Palliacatta, and other varieties of rumals in particular, as well as the diverse varieties of chintz. The prescriptions and instructive orders which, we believe, were laid down with all possible clarity in our previous demands, have been equally little followed by the respective servants on this Coast, and the causes to which this must be attributed have likewise been kept hidden from us. We therefore explicitly desire that henceforth, as often as our demands are either not fulfilled at all, or only partially, or if there is a departure from the instructions which we have given in the particular respects, the reasons that gave rise to this must then be distinctly explained to us, in order that we may take our measures accordingly; the servants at the outer factories shall have to convey the necessary reports regarding this to the ministers. Meanwhile, we hold as repeated here what we wrote to you in our demand of the year 1762 under the matter of Bengal. For the rest, we cannot pass over in silence that the printed cottons of guinees and salempores, as far as the ones sent most recently are concerned, have very much decreased in quality in some varieties, those from Nagapatnam having satisfied very poorly, while due to the great inequality between one piece and another, a difference of 20 to 25 percent has been found. The fine salempores are very ordinary, and even so bad that the 18-punjam salempores from Palicol, which cost 549 guilders, 13 stivers, 8 pennies per 100 pieces, can be sold for a higher price than the fine ones, the purchase cost of which amounts to 565 guilders, 15 stivers, 8 pennies; the difference in quality being the sole cause thereof. As this provides striking proof that in the collection, the sorting, as well as otherwise, no attentiveness takes place, or that this work is handled by unskilled persons, we expect that the necessary provision will be made in this regard, and that so important a matter of the Company's trade will henceforth be directed with greater attention.
