Clercq 847 Batavia To His High Excellency the High Noble Grand Honorable Ruling Lord Petrus Albertus van der Parra Governor General and the Right Honorable Lords Councilors of Netherlands India etc. etc. etc. High Noble Grand Honorable Ruling Lord and Right Honorable Lords, Both via Malacca and Ceylon, and with the safe arrival in the roads here of the ships Vreede Lust and De Jonge Lieve, we have had the special honor to receive Your High Excellencies' letters dispatched in duplicate under dates of 15 September and 16 October of the past year, as well as 26 January and 23 April of this year. In our humble reply to these, we first of all testify with respect that we have taken, and shall further allow to serve, as a seal and guide for our actions in the master's service, the orders and recommendations contained in those missives; and in accordance 848 therewith, we have also not failed to write to the heads of the subordinate offices what was necessary regarding the not giving of salutes to foreign private ships. And furthermore, we have forwarded to the Lords and Masters per the ship De Jonge Lieve the yield of the 196 ells of silk grain-dyed fabrics sold here at public auction in the year 1769, having remained unsaleable on the island of Ceylon, which were sent hither for that purpose. We take the liberty to append a copy thereof to this letter, both for Your High Excellencies' honored consideration, and of our humble letter presented to the Lords and Masters per the ship De Jonge Lieve, to which, with the favorable pleasure of Your High Excellencies, we take the liberty to refer, both regarding the information provided concerning the proposed shipment of Cormandel cloths with the Ceylon return ships, and the notice given alongside it of the error committed in the billing price of the two bales of betilles ternalanes of 3 cobidos wide manufactured here as a sample. to always make known, with the returns or mint findings of all the parcels of gold and silver being minted, the number of Pagodas, Rupees, or fanums that they yield, as can be observed in more detail in the copies sent thereof as well as in the short extracts thereof inserted in our respectful letters; nevertheless, the order given by Your High Nobilities in that regard shall urge us more and more toward attentiveness concerning this point; we offer in the meantime to Your High Nobilities our humble gratitude for the request made to the Netherlands to provide this Government with 1000 marg of Gold of 15 carats, for the making of fanums, as well as for the forwarding of the European return of the Coromandel linens sold in the Netherlands in anno 1770, in order thereafter to make the distribution of the favorably granted gratuity. Concerning the ship 't Huijs te Krooswijk, destined for this Coast via Malacca and Bengal, the heads of the subordinate offices were also written to early on with the necessary instructions, and those of Jaggernaijkpoeram were ordered that, in case the time should advance too far before that keel appeared there, they should then, having loaded the packages lying in stock, let it sail directly onward hither without calling at Palliacatta or Sadraspatnam; while in the meantime having the bales that successively became ready at those factories transported hither by the chaloups, either so as not to let that vessel linger long there if it appeared early on this Coast and called at those offices, or to be loaded here upon sailing directly hither from Jaggernaijkpoeram; but it will already have come to the knowledge of Your High Nobilities from the advices of the Bengal ministers that, due to the late appearance of the aforesaid ship 't Huijs te Krooswijk in the Ganges, not until 29 January of this year, those ministers were under the necessity, instead of that, to allocate to this Coast the ship Den Tempel, which was already sufficiently ready to sail to undertake the voyage to the Indian Capital, just as that keel, having departed from the Ganges thereon on 15 February, still appeared rather prosperously on 5 March thereafter at Bimilipatnam; but from there to this capital it had a sad, adverse voyage of 4½ months, not counting the lay days at Bimilipatnam from 5 to 16 March and at Jaggernaijkpoeram from 28 May to 22 June thereafter, and after the loss of 5 anchors, namely 1 between Bimilipatnam and Jaggernaijkpoeram, and 4 between Palliacatta and Sadraspatnam, it did not arrive here in the roadstead until 27 August last; we have therefore, on account of that late appearance, resolved in our session of the 6th of this month, on the foundation of the reasons alleged therein, to detain that vessel until the ordinary time of the autumn dispatch of the ships, or 15 October next, and to send thereby to Your High Nobilities the report of affairs, of what has been performed here since the dispatch of our humble advices via Ceylon, besides that which is brought beforehand in this to the honored knowledge of Your High Nobilities. We flatter ourselves with the hope that Your High Nobilities will favorably be pleased to approve this arrangement made by us, the more so because we presume that that ship, in safe navigation, will arrive at Batavia at almost one and the same time, or at least not much later than the ship Vreede Lust, and moreover we deemed the detention thereof so much the more necessary on account of the critical state in which affairs on this Coast presently stand, so as not to withhold from the honored knowledge of Your High Nobilities that which might meanwhile occur here after the dispatch of this letter. We thank Your High Nobilities for the approval of our actions regarding the return ship Alkemade of the previous year, and we shall henceforth keep the order of Your High Nobilities regarding the alteration or rather enlargement of the water bay in the return vessels as a fixed rule and guideline without any deviation; we would not have proceeded to the same in anno passato if the skipper of that vessel, Jan van Eijsden, had not disapproved of the arrangement made at Batavia regarding the placement of the water bay, and thus absolutely insisted here upon that alteration made, giving notice that if such were not done, he would leave all the damage that might thereby come to the cargo to our account. The orders given regarding the ship De Jonge Lieve were strictly observed, and thus no more heavy ballast was loaded here either, which was also not necessary, since with the 50,000 lb of stones received as ballast at the Indian Capital, more than Alkemade had loaded, the lower layer was sufficient enough to turn the prow toward Europe thereon. Just as, in further compliance with the orders, one has not omitted to take the required care to have all the packages, both Indian and fatherland ones, that were in stock at the offices of Sadraspatnam and Palliacatta, successively transported hither as far as has been possible, not only to resort the linens here, but also, as aforesaid, upon the arrival of the ships at the offices, not to keep them delayed long or needlessly there.

854 We trust that, without being delayed, through these precautions the Jaggernaijkpoeram servants will be well able to dispatch the ships Vreedelust and De Jonge Lieve to Batavia and Europe on the day appointed by Your High Excellencies, being the 25th of this month. The first-named vessel Vreedelust, via the offices of Sadraspatnam and Palliacatta, having been dispatched on 20 July with 201 Indian packs, and the ship De Jonge Lieve with 712 bales for Europe, besides those for India which arrived after the departure of Vreede Lust to be transshipped at the Jaggernaijkpoeram roads, was dispatched from here directly to Jaggernaijkpoeram on 20 August, and was followed there on the 30th by the sloop De Walvisch via the offices of Portonovo, Sadraspatnam, and Pallia Catta, for the conveyance of all such homeland packs as might have arrived there after the departure of the ship Vreede Lust (by which we had everything that was to be found at the two last-mentioned factories conveyed to Jaggernaijkpoeram), as has been done this day directly from here 13 directly with the sloop De Nagtegaal, with the remaining bales that have arrived, having also dispatched a few days ago the thoni Johanna Maria with 50 packs, with which, as well as with the number of 400 to 450 packs stated by the Jaggernaijkpoeram chiefs according to their letters of 16 July last, which they expected to have ready and on hand for Europe by the middle of this month, the aforementioned return ship will be fully laden. Furthermore, in order to contribute from our side everything that may serve for the dispatch of both those keels at the appointed time, we have sent the clerks Fredrik Gronau and Petrus van Grol to Jaggernaijkpoeram and at the same time authorized the servants to summon one or two more clerks from Palicol for the speedy preparation of the papers, so that the chiefs will not again be able to use the multitude of paperwork as a pretext for the late dispatch of the ships, with repeated representations of the displeasure that was brought to Your High Excellencies in that regard concerning the 855 dispatch 856: dispatch of the ship Alkemade in anno passado. Furthermore, the aforementioned return ship De Jonge Lieve has not only retained the fixed number of [illegible] hands, but has even increased the same by placing thereon the relieved men from here and Jaggernaijkpoeram itself. Regarding the dispatch of the ship Vreede Lust, we have also strictly adhered to Your High Excellencies' venerated orders in that regard, for which its early appearance here, which was on 8 June last, afforded us an exceptional opportunity. However, since the Bimilipatnam chiefs had already been ordered in the beginning of this year to send over to Jaggernaijkpoeram, by all sloop opportunities, the piece goods gradually collected by them which might have remained over after the departure of the ship Het Huijs te Krooswijk, expected at that time from Bengal, or which had successively come in, for which purpose the sloops Anthonia Dorothea and Poeyoer were dispatched thither early on, it was thus 13 thus deemed unnecessary to send the aforementioned ship Vreede Lust further north than merely to Jaggernaijkpoeram, and it was ordered, once laden there, to undertake the voyage from there directly to the Indian capital, and in the meantime, on its voyage to Sadraspatnam, to call in passing at the stone quarry Carieloer to take in as many hewn freestones as was left to the discretion of the authorities to load without damage. We hope that this small alteration made by us in the return dispatch of that keel may receive the venerated approval of Your High Excellencies. And since there is a lack of sufficient sloops on this Coast, both for the transport of merchandise to the subordinate offices and the bringing back of packs of piece goods hither, as well as other necessary and sometimes unforeseen operations, all the more because two of the vessels currently on hand, namely the Anthonia Dorothea and Poegoer, are entirely old and worn out, so that the considerable repairs that would need to be done to them to keep them in a usable state are not worth it, 857 worth doing, we most humbly request Your High Excellencies kindly to send us, for the service of this Government, two other sloops of 80 to 85 feet, and at the same time to grant authorization to sell the aforementioned two old sloops by public auction, since all the expenses incurred on them henceforth are merely needless, which is nothing other than patching up, notwithstanding that by loading the Company's precious goods into the same, one merely exposes them to accidents. Proceeding now to the formal, respectful reply to Your High Excellencies' much-respected missives, and the reporting of the matters regarding what has occurred and been executed in the service of the Honorable Company here since the dispatch of our last advices of the last day of December of the past year and 11 January of this year, we initially express our humble gratitude for the cash, merchandise, and other goods with which Your High Excellencies have been pleased to provide this Government, as well as for the favorable approval of all our proceedings of the previous year; and we flatter ourselves with a similar approval regarding that which we have the honor to bring respectfully to Your High Excellencies' notice concerning our actions herewith. Regarding the article of ships and vessels, the principal matters concerning the loading and dispatch of that vessel as well as the return ship De Jonge Lieve having been dealt with in our aforementioned short letter sent with the ship Vreedelust on the 10th of September last, we take the liberty to refer thereto, not doubting that our actions in that regard, all having been arranged in accordance with what was recommended in that respect, will carry Your High Excellencies' revered approval; just as we trust that the observed arrangement of the invoices of the linens being sent by private individuals with the ships will satisfy Your High Excellencies' intentions. Regarding the delivered cargoes of the merchandise etc. received by those two vessels, one has, at our sessions of the 14th of July and 20th of August last, when the general findings received thereof served, validated for write-off everything that did not exceed the general write-off regulation, and thus have charged the account of the officers of the ship Vreedelust, at the purchase price, for 97 lbs Dutch steel, and 10 bottles of rosewater, as well as 15 bundles of drum cords, 3 pieces of drumheads, 100 pieces of chamois leather sword frogs, 6 pieces of cartridge pouch straps, and 8 lbs of sewing thread, because, according to the sworn report annexed to the expense account of the commissioned military officers who were present at the receipt, all were found to be choked by moisture and entirely useless; notwithstanding that upon investigation it was clearly evident that those goods were completely good and new upon shipment at Batavia, and therefore must have been spoiled either on board ship or during shipment or transshipment at the Batavia Roads, by becoming wet, which had to be presumed or concluded from what was noted down by the said commissioned officers in their aforementioned report, namely that crate No. 37, in which the aforementioned armory goods had been packed, was poorly provided without tarpaulin or any other covering. For that reason, it was presumed that during shipment at the Indian capital it must have gotten wet between the shore and the ship; but on the other hand, those officers have been credited for 1552 cans of arrack api, against the purchase price of 28. 8. - old pagodas or f 127. 10 per leaguer, and 277 lbs Dutch iron, being that much delivered by them in excess after deduction of the permitted validation. And with respect to the ship De Jonge Lieve, no other excessive short weight appeared than 381 1/4 on 100,000 lbs of Japanese bar copper, making 5/8 per cent, of which 1/8 per cent or 125 lbs was validated for write-off, and the remaining 1/4 per cent or 256 1/4 lbs was charged to the account of the officers. Meanwhile, with respect to the goods found defective upon receipt, we shall in future promptly observe and comply with what Your High Excellencies have been pleased to recommend to us; and we would not have omitted to have the required examination take place regarding the armory goods received in the past year and reported as bad and worn out, had this not accidentally been overlooked; we therefore very humbly request Your High Excellencies for a favorable excuse concerning that matter. Regarding the collection of linens, we shall, through Your High Excellencies' goodness, continue to look forward to the return of the Jaggernaikpoeram linens that were sent from here to Batavia in the past year per the Vreedelust, as soon as they shall have been sold, whether at the Indian capital or in the Netherlands; just as we shall likewise await the outcome and the revered decision of the Lords and Masters of and concerning the sale of the Palicol chintzes that were likewise found bad upon examination; expressing meanwhile our humble gratitude for the favorable approval of our action not yet to allow the merchants of that factory to enjoy for the present the terms granted by Your High Excellencies in their revered missive of the 31st of May.

... specifically permitted increase of three percent in May 1771, and furthermore no further contracting nor shipment of the Bethilles Ternatanes will need to be made, until one shall be furnished with your High Nobles' most honorable disposition concerning the sale of the 2 packs already sent to Europe for trial; meanwhile, nothing is neglected to continually spur the chiefs as well as the merchants to vigilance, to promptly fulfill the contracts made; just as all attention is used, that the traders regarding the permitted freight-free shipment of linens, in satisfaction of their debts, do not offend by employing for that purpose any funds that were entrusted to them for the collection of linens for the Honorable Company, which also has not come to our notice, as none of those traders has made any shipment thus far, except only the Bimilipatnam traders, of 9 packs of diverse linens, which according to the letter of the Bimilipatnam chiefs dated 12 August last were sent among other linens of the Honorable Company to Iaggernaekpoeram, for transshipment in the vessel Vreedelust, but one has as yet no notice that that vessel has put in there with them. The 48 bales of rejects that were sent hither by the Bimilipatnam traders in the past year, having been defective, holed, and mended linens, which were rejected during sorting both on the bleachfield and in the packing hall, have been turned into money here, and have together yielded an amount of pagodas 3580. 15. 60 with 4 percent agio, f16112:19:— according to the accounts of returns formed thereof, which we have the honor to present respectfully to your High Nobles alongside this, for which the merchants have been credited in their accounts in reduction of their debts. Just as is to happen in the same manner, both with an additional quantity of 49 bales, already brought hither to us from there with the ship Den Tempel, and with those that are still to be sent to us, as soon as they shall have been turned into money after the departure of the bearer of this. Meanwhile, we shall seek on all occasions to continue with the introduced method, to have as much as possible all the linens of the subordinate offices brought over hither, to be further resorted and examined here, just as has been done without neglect since that was brought into practice, and the chiefs were continuously notified and shown the detected defects in the linens, with the return of the unacceptable linens when they consisted of a small quantity of pieces, to be supplemented by other good and sound cloths; just as we also, on account of the lesser sound quality found in them, were necessitated at our session of 16 June last, upon resorting a quantity of 301 packs of linens from Jaggernaijkpoeram and Palicol, to accept 26 ditto from the first-mentioned and 30 ditto from the last-mentioned factory as third sort instead of the higher sorts stated by the servants, and to reduce the price accordingly, and in consequence thereof Jaggernaijkpoeram was charged an amount of f408. 8. 8. and Palicol f319. 15. for compensation, and the lesser return of the pieces fallen to rejects that are to be sold here was imposed for payment, to which we have had to proceed all the sooner, because from that it came to be proven how little reliance is to be placed on the promises that are continuously made that the soundness of the linens shall be improved, notwithstanding the so earnestly repeated admonitions regarding this so many times, and especially for some years past, in order that the Honorable Company may yet again, as before, convey its collected returns here on the Coast with profit, and to attain that, instead of all the reproaches for the future, the aforementioned means was judged of greater moment, to reduce the goods which were found so bad upon the resorting, by an appraisal of their effective value in proportion to the prices and quality of the good and acceptable sorts, to such lower purchase price as one deemed them to be worth. And although by that arrangement made to resort the linens here, some greater expenses do come to be caused, the same will nevertheless be of much use in the future, since the chiefs are thereby more or less brought under the necessity to be more attentive in accepting cloths than they have been for some time, thus improving the quality of the cloths, there is also hope that the profits upon the sale will fall higher, and thus amply outweigh the aforementioned expenses.

The junior merchant and secunde of Palliacatta, Hendrik Scoffier, offers Your High Noblenesses his humble gratitude for the favor shown to him with the recommendations granted in his favor to the Lords Majors, for obtaining relief from the assessment imposed upon him on account of the Palicol chintzes sent to the fatherland in the year 1768 and sold there at a loss; until receipt of which one will in the meantime retain both his share in the allotted gratuity and that of his former secunde at Palicol, Johannes Camper. The merchants of Portonovo still continue in their slowness in delivering linens, without the representations and serious threats made to them having yet been able to have any good effect; we shall have to wait and see what they will do toward the end of the collection and the closing of their final account, as it seems to have become a custom with them to wait until the very last. But for now there is nothing else to do than to exercise patience, hoping that their debts will not increase, but rather decrease through the delivery of the still-missing linens for the monies advanced and received for that purpose, through the contracted 6 per cent, the result of which we will only be able to communicate via Ceylon, both with respect to this and all the other offices, as one will only then be able to see how the procurement stands and has turned out. The letters from the Sadraspatnam chiefs are also filled with complaints about the conduct of their merchants, especially about the trader Cheddeappa Chittij, who, having been urged with all force by the servants to deliver his portion or share in the contracted linens for the year 1773, concerning which he remained very deficient and nonchalant, finally being unable to help himself with any further excuses, declared his inability to provide the cloths contracted by him. This, according to their letters of 20 May last, compelled the chiefs to entrust the delivery of that share, according to a separately made contract, to the fellow merchant Andiappa Moddelij, who has also undertaken to deliver those missing cloths, along with his portion, of the required quality, the outcome of which will likewise show the result. For the rest, there will for the present still be no possibility to revoke the increased price on the coarse textiles, which is still maintained both at this office and Bimilipatnam, before and until the debts are finally liquidated; for if it is taken away from the traders again, it is certain that nothing more, or very little, of the merchants' debit will come in. Moreover, those of Sadraspatnam cannot possibly do without the prices currently paid there, because the linens in that region cost much more, so that a change in that regard in this juncture of times will give no small cause for concern, not only regarding the quality of the cloths, but also regarding their quantity. For experience has taught that the merchants derive little profit from the collection, and for the most part only do so for the glory of being Company merchants, for the sake of the protection and esteem that they obtain for it, and because they are therefore more or less respected by the natives through the credit that they then come to obtain. No doubt concerning the fulfillment of this year's contracts, except regarding the aforementioned assortments, and why. We express our humble gratitude for the redress made in the mistake committed here regarding the three bales of Salempoeris common unbleached, which were recorded from here as second sort instead of third, as they in fact ought to be and were also found to be such at Batavia. With regard to the general collection, we do not doubt in the least that this year's demands and the contracts made with the merchants will for the most part be fulfilled, except that the seven bales of Bethilles Ternatanes fine pro patria, and 1 ditto checked underpants ginghams for Ternate, at Palliacatta, remained unaccepted just as in the previous year, on account of the difficulties already brought forward for some years past; besides another 4 bales of Cambays, also for Ternate, because that assortment was last contracted for in the year 1762, but could not be delivered as required. Whereunto the chiefs were forced regarding the price of those assortments. Whereas, on the other hand, the chiefs were forced, for the checked underpants ginghams pro patria, to agree to the price of pa/o 253 with 8 per cent, or ƒ1138. 10. –. per bale; the same price which the merchants in the year 1780, according to the chiefs' letters of 25 February of that year, had demanded for it, for which they agreed to supply promptly the demanded bales of that assortment according to the samples sent over. However, we could not consent to that added price increase as being without special qualification from Your High Nobilities, because, pursuant to what was noted in our Resolution of 12 March following of that year, it had already been rejected, and this was also approved by Your High Nobilities. what shall be observed with regard to the arrears of the Merchants of the adjacent factories. state, concerning their being unable to report where the English in the north collect and obtain their fine yarn, notwithstanding the investigation they conducted at Visiagapatnam, Ingeram, Maduapalem, and Mazulipatnam, which causes us, not without reason, to suppose that the Merchants, either do not wish it to be known, or that the person who was employed for that inquiry made little or no effort, or else lacked sufficient skill to execute it. With regard to the Arrears, we shall observe in dutiful compliance that which was recommended regarding the Bimilipatnam and Jaggernaijkpoeram merchants concerning their claims on and what those of Bimilipatnam have alleged and requested in that regard. continuation. on the former chiefs of those Factories, Pieter Abrahamsz: Bronsveld and Fredrik Jan Koovenaar; the Traders of the first-mentioned Comptoir finding that their aim—to charge to the account of the Honorable Company, if possible, that which they have to claim from the said Bronsveld, pretending that the amount of their aforementioned claim was taken by the said former chiefs from the funds certified to them upon delivery, both in linens and money—would not succeed according to their wish, have, according to what was communicated by the chiefs in their letters of 20 February last, requested that they might be permitted to deduct 5 instead of 7 percent on the disbursements made to them, in satisfaction of the arrears of why their request was rejected. and under what desire and what view is held in that regard. of the said Chief Bronsveld, so as thereby not only to make the satisfaction of that debt somewhat more bearable for them, but also, according to the declaration of the chiefs, to encourage those traders toward the speedy liquidation thereof; but we have rejected the same, as granting such requests usually only gives rise to many other capricious requests, and required that they persist in paying the contracted 7 percent until their remaining debt, in which their aforementioned claim amounting to f 16596. 10. 8. or pa/o 3688. 2. 60. is included, should be finally paid and liquidated; by which we think it will remain, and in time that troublesome matter will also be settled. But the Jaggernaijkpoeram Merchants are not so manageable concerning their claim of pa/o 6533. 8¼. or f 29400. -. 15. on the former chief of that factory, Fredrik Jan Lovenaar, because continuation. because, following what was communicated by the chiefs in their letters of 9 April and 19 August last, they would by no means allow themselves to be moved to accept the means so favorably suggested to them by Your High Excellencies in Your most venerated letter of 16 October 1772 for the liquidation of that entry; the greatest obstacle that presents itself in that regard, according to the aforementioned latest writing of the servants, is that among the 21 Merchants of that factory there are only four who were capable of making any shipment of linens for their private account; therefore the chiefs, on account of the inability of the other Traders to profit individually from that valuable favor, attempted to persuade the aforementioned four wealthy merchants, Weem Walleesalingam, Mamedie Enketakistna, Batjoe Amaija, and Batjoe Triwengalam, to take upon themselves the settlement of that debt, and to contract with the other Merchants in that regard, to which they appeared somewhat inclined as if under constraint, but they came forward with such hard conditions regarding their insolvent fellows that could not possibly be accepted; without their being willing to be convinced by the chiefs' demonstration of the groundlessness and unfairness of their desire, aiming at nothing other than their own self-interest, obstinately declaring that if it could not be otherwise, they would rather pay their portions and leave the others to their own affairs. continuation. further considerations concerning the freight-free shipment of 8000 pagodas to be applied towards the settlement of the aforementioned debt, the liquidation of which could thereby be effected considerably sooner than if it had to result from a shipment of goods belonging solely to the merchants, which would drag on for three or even four years; to which they further add that if that trade should happen to turn out badly for the merchants, they would not lack difficulties to keep the discharge thereof lingering, whereas, on the contrary, the freight on the proposed amount, regardless of whose goods they may be, being projected and designated as a fund for that purpose, would be obtained from the shipment with two ships departing from there, in which there would be space enough for the private goods; and regarding the objection that could be made, namely that this permitted freight 887 and what was requested regarding it. free shipment of 8000 pagodas was only that which was sent from there annually, and thus the only thing remitted was the freight that the Honorable Company would not otherwise receive, the chiefs further add that the above-mentioned four merchants annually had as many cloths manufactured as their means in any way permitted or as they could prepare, and which were sold by them for shipment to Batavia, which they estimate at an annual sum of 20,000 pagodas; and the aforementioned 8000 pagodas being deducted therefrom for the shipment for their aforementioned claim, only 12000 pagodas in goods would then remain for sale for them, and consequently fewer goods to be shipped on freight, and thus the Honorable Company would likewise enjoy less freight in that case, concerning which proposition 8 how much the general debts amounted to in 177½. assurance of the reduction thereof and under which headings. of the chiefs we respectfully request Your High Nobles to be pleased to decide with Your most venerated approval. Concerning the reduction of the general debts, which at the closing of the books of the past trading year 177½ still amounted to a sum of ƒ205547:14, we renew herewith our so frequently given assurances that no effort will be left unspared towards their further diminution, and finally their full liquidation; and thus to give Your High Nobles all satisfaction in that regard, of which we hope that our efforts this year may also not be in vain, but that we shall also be able to supply the most sincere proofs of our zeal and attention regarding an article of such importance, since 8 increase of the surety to facilitate the speedy settlement as much as possible, upon the instances made for that purpose at our meetings of the 2nd of February and 24th of March last, the sureties of the Sadraspatnam merchants Goendoer Baal Chittij and Maddhoese saselam Chittij were each increased by another 1000, or from 2000 to 3000 pagodas; both because the guarantors were found to be sufficiently solvent for this, and also to enable those merchants, through a more ample advance of money, to better pursue the procurement of cloths with greater vigor for their share, since otherwise, where other merchants obtain more money, they would notoriously have to fall behind regarding the delivery of their quota, according to the report of the chiefs alongside the aforementioned merchants; wherefore we have to that end, and in order to letters 888 letters of the 8th of March of this year. charges on account: the Palicol settlement, condemnation of the same to a year's liability regarding the increased debts. why it had to be left at that, and what was recommended to the chiefs concerning the minting; as they conducted the examination solely by touchstone, therefore it could not turn out as accurate as when the assay was taken and handled in the European manner; and although these reasons could not fully satisfy us, we nevertheless had to leave it at that, because nothing else could be done in this regard than to recommend to the servants the utmost care and attention concerning the minting, with the reminder that however ignorant one might be or become in that respect, nevertheless good supervision would contribute not a little toward keeping the minters and others, to whom the same was entrusted or through whose hands it had to pass, within the bounds of loyalty and duty, and to remove all opportunities for committing fraud, especially when they notice that their doings are being checked. Of the 7248 pieces of Siamese ticals, or in weight 429 marcs 2 ounces 10 engels, received in the past year from the Indian headquarters and sent to Jaggernaikpoeram for minting into rupees, 459 pieces were returned hither by the servants alongside their letter of 24 March of this year, on the grounds that the minters had declared that they could not mint the same without great loss; namely: 139 pieces or 7 marcs 6 ounces 7 engels with a loss of as much as 20 percent, and 320 pieces or 17 marcs 7 ounces 9 engels with a loss of 50 percent; to relieve the Honorable Company thereof and to free it from that loss, we offered the same for sale to the money changers here, and upon their bid made of 5½ new Nagapatnam pagodas or 22 guilders 18 stuivers 7 penningen per marc troy, in conformity with our resolution of 18 May last, ceded the same to them on 2 months credit, thus yielding, instead of the aforementioned loss upon minting, a profit of 18 percent, as further appears below; namely: 25 5/40 marcs troy cost according to the Batavia account 537 guilders 9 stuivers — penningen or 119 pagodas 10 fanams 30 kas, and were, as said, sold for 15½ pagodas per marc troy, 141 pagodas 11 fanams 56 kas, thus yielding a profit of 22 pagodas 1 fanam 26 kas or barely 18 percent.
