Per the ship The return ship mentioned in the margin the Princes van Orange. of this, consigned by Their High Nobilities for the Chambers Chambers Amsterdam and Zeeland, arrived here on the 19th of June of this Year, after making a very swift voyage; though however not free of defects; for we found here upon inspection, that its bowsprit was entirely rotted and decayed; so we had it provided again with a new one, which we trust will be made so firm and strong, that it will be able to continue the voyage from here to Europe therewith without the least anxiety. The reason why this ship is dispatched from here, and not from Northern Chormandel, your High Noble High Honorables may please to attribute 1 to attribute to the considerable remainder of piece goods, which we had on hand upon its arrival, consisting of 1562 bales for Europe. This, added to the news, which we had received from Paggernaikpoeram, that the bark de Liefde had already departed from there to this place on the 12th of July, with a considerable quantity of 265 packages of Northern piece goods, caused us, on the 31st of August, to resolve to hold said vessel here, disregarding the orders conflicting therewith, in order to be dispatched directly from here to Europe on the 15th of October; as is to take place tomorrow, with a considerable Cargo of

Meanwhile, we have the high honour to communicate with the deepest respect to Your Right Honourables, Highly Esteemed, the receipt via Ceilon of your highly respected Missive of 10 October 1775, accompanied by such Enclosures as are noted on the Register sent over of the same; and for which kind disposition we are infinitely indebted to Your Right Honourables, Highly Esteemed; in particular, we thank you highly for the communicated outcome of the Conferences held at The Hague between the Gentlemen Delegates from Their High Mightinesses and the Knight Sir Yorke, Ambassador Extraordinary from His Britannic Majesty to the State, concerning the matters that occurred on this Coast in the year 1773 in relation to the Kingdom of Tanjore; and we wish for the best of the Company, in whose welfare we take a particular interest, that the strict orders dispatched by the Gentlemen Directors of the English Company, on special command of His Britannic Majesty, to their Ministers in the Indies, to maintain an inviolable harmony and friendship with the Representatives of the Dutch Company in these Asian Regions, in conformity with the contents of the Treaties and the mutual interest of both Nations, will be somewhat better observed and complied with by the aforesaid Ministers of the English Company than used to happen previously, both here and in Bengal. Among the Enclosures of the aforementioned highly respected Missive was also received the Demand of return goods for the year 1777, so far as it concerns Coromandel, and we did not omit to send Extracts thereof at once to our subordinate Factories, under serious notification to the respective chiefs, to take especially care that the cloths requisitioned from their Office are completely fulfilled in virtuous weave, freed from the indicated defects; which we hope will be fulfilled by them, as is proper and fitting for faithful and honor-loving servants. Meanwhile, we will apply everything to that end from our side that will depend on our knowledge and power, in order by that means to remove at last the rightful displeasure which Your Right Honourables, Highly Esteemed, for some years with so much reason have had to conceive about the quality of the Coromandel return goods: a displeasure which has pained us sensibly; since it does not depend on our goodwill and power alone, but also on the fidelity and zeal of the chiefs, to cause the same to cease entirely. How matters stand with the procurement of linen this year on this coast, of this we have not hitherto been able to give a complete report to Their High Excellencies at Batavia, since the settlements of the merchants have not yet come in; however, we dare assure Your Right Honourables, Highly Esteemed, in advance that the intake succeeded rather better than in the past year, except at Pulicat, where no more than sixteen packages, consisting of 5 acceptable and 11 rejected bales, were collected. The cause of this intake, which is not worth mentioning, we have communicated in detail to Their High Excellencies in the letter now departing for Batavia, and consequently we respectfully take the liberty of referring ourselves to the report that Their High Excellencies will make to Your Right Honourables, Highly Esteemed, in that regard. It has served us as a particular satisfaction to see, in the introduction of the recently received Demand, that Your Right Honourables, Highly Esteemed, have already begun to perceive some improvement in the quality of the linens; we hope that the return goods brought by the ship De Both and those of the bearer of this will give even more satisfaction to Your Right Honourables, Highly Esteemed; at least we have spared neither diligence nor trouble for that, nor spared ourselves continually to admonish the chiefs in this matter to their duty; and we will continue on that footing, in order thereby to earn more and more the approval of Your Right Honourables, Highly Esteemed, in this principal point of the Company's trade on this coast. In the requisition pro Patria for this year, requisitioned by Your Right Honourables, Highly Esteemed, from Negapatnam, being 100 pieces of Bethilles extra fine and broad, we have assigned the delivery thereof to the Sadraspatnam merchant Goendhoer Baal Chittij, who undertook and delivered those cloths according to a sample selected by us, being 21 ½ cubits long, scarcely, and 2 cubits broad, which differs little in fineness from the old Pulicat sample, at 9 pagodas the piece; thus we now ship those cloths in fulfillment of the Demand among the return goods of the bearer of this, in the hope that we will thereby bring satisfaction to Your Right Honourables, Highly Esteemed, whom we at the same time request with all respect to inform us whether you will be pleased to be served with more of those cloths. tanes of 2¼ Cobidos wide, but these cloths did not turn out as well as the first; nevertheless, at his urgent request, we accepted them and likewise loaded them onto the bearer of this letter for the Netherlands; though with a reduction of 8 percent on the actual purchase cost, so that now this pack, instead of costing the Company Pagodas 155: -, comes to only Pagodas 142:14: 32:, wherefore we trust that the lower price will amply outweigh the lesser quality of the aforementioned linens, and consequently the Company will gain rather than suffer a loss by this acceptance. The sale of merchandise in the most recently completed financial year was considerably larger in scope than that of the year before; but what profit we have actually made on this coast from the marketed merchandise cannot yet be precisely determined, as we still lack the returns for the months of July and August; however, we have the preliminary pleasure of informing Your High Excellencies and Most Honorable Sirs that from the received returns of merchandise sold at our respective factories up to and including the month of June, it can be roughly gathered that a profit of 3¼ tons will already have been made on sales along this coast, without including the profits from Nagapatnam. And this being all with which we have ventured to wait upon Your High Excellencies and Most Honorable Sirs for the present, we take the liberty with regard to the bearer of this letter to note that we have granted deeds, with a surplus of wages, to the Boatswain's Mate and Boatswain's Yeoman assigned thereto, who have served on this ship in the aforementioned capacities since the year 1775, dating from the day of their provisional appointment; and this for reasons expressed in the resolution of 20 September last; the extract of which being respectfully appended hereto, we request that the wages awarded to them may, on that account, be credited to their benefit. And although upon the dispatch of this ship, for want of fine linens, we could not comply with your very revered order, written by extract letter of the 8th of October of the past year to their High Nobles, the Lord Governor-General and Council of the Indies, whereby the cargo of a Coromandel return ship was fixed at 9 tons; we nevertheless hope that this cargo will meet your expectation; while we sincerely assure your Serene Highness and High Noble, Right Honorable Lords that in the future we shall, as far as is possible for us, take care that the cargo of a return ship comes somewhat closer to the quota. In accordance with our promises made in our previous respectful letter, we hereby offer to your Serene Highness and High Noble, Right Honorable Lords in a sealed small box, two three-image and two new Nagapatnam pagodas, together with 8 pieces of the fanums minted here, with two pieces of silver rupees struck at Jaggernaikpoeram. And whereas the chiefs there, in their letter of the 29th of November of the past year, to our utter astonishment communicated to us that they not only had 12 packs of ordinary bleached and unbleached first-sort guinees made after an English fashion, but even had sent off three packs thereof of unbleached guinees among the returns of the ship De Both to serve as a sample, without giving the least account thereof to your Serene Highness and High Noble, Right Honorable Lords or to us, we have deemed it proper to give communication of this imprudent conduct of the servants, over which we shall reproach them severely, to your Serene Highness and High Noble, Right Honorable Lords hereby. Of the Gold of 18 carats 5½ grains, brought to Ceylon on the ships 't Huis ter Meij from Amsterdam and Oud Haarlem from Zeeland for the service of this Government—namely from the first Chamber to an amount of ƒ 333,102: 13: —, and from the other up to 33,186 Flemish pounds—we have, since the Ceylon Ministers were authorized by your Serene Highness and the Right Honourable Gentlemen to retain that parcel in case of necessity, and they have written to us that they were short of Gold there, demanded only one chest for the minting of new Nagapatnam Pagodas, for which there is a great shortage here, in Sadraspatnam, and at Palliacatta. We therefore expect to receive the same shortly, or upon the opening of navigation from there; and with this relief, for which we respectfully thank your Serene Highness and the Right Honourable Gentlemen, we shall try to keep things going until we receive new assistance from Batavia. As to the reasons for this lower fulfillment, we, along with the servants, must for the greatest part attribute them to the tyranny of the English gentlemen to the North, who not only greatly disturbed and hindered our collection at Bimilipatnam and Jaggernaikpoeram, but above all at Palicol, by forcing the weavers in the country—where they, as allies or rather lawmakers of the Nawab, play the master—with canings to manufacture linens for no one else but them. We therefore hope that your Serene Highness and the Right Honourable Gentlemen will be pleased to bear with this small collection, for we know ourselves to be blameless in this regard, and we cannot complain of any neglect of duty on the part of our chiefs at the subordinate offices either. trading post, where in the previous financial year a profit of ƒ126657:15.— was made on the traded goods, has this year gained only ƒ72300:12:—, thus less by a considerable sum of ƒ54357. 3. —, which has been caused in part by the dearness of provisions, which were very scarce to obtain thereabouts in this year; because the inhabitants naturally had to abstain from matters that can more easily be spared and yet must be bought much dearer, but principally must be attributed to the staying away of the merchants from the country, who were otherwise accustomed to come trade there annually. The increase of the Palicol debts we can attribute to no other causes than to the impoverished state of the merchants and the tyranny of the English, especially that of the Resident at Ingeruw Mr Sattler, who went so far that none of the weavers living thereabouts dared to accept money from our merchants for the manufacturing of linens, for fear of being ill-treated. But because our chief Accama has complained about him up to three times to the English governor at Mazulipatnam, this has finally had the desired effect with the said gentleman, that he has arranged at Madras that a commission has been dispatched to Ingeram to investigate the acts of violence of that chief, so we flatter ourselves with reason that the same will cease before long, and our merchants will thereby obtain the opportunity to trade freely again; whereby we expect that their debts will also be reduced.
