Thus it appeared that the expenses this time, in contrast to anno 1789, amounted to ƒ 226. 5. 8 less, and that this reduction arose primarily from the fact that in the last book year fewer Sinhalese labberdoors from Colombo served on the carpentry yard and thereby the provisions to the same were saved, through fewer blacksmith coals consumed for the forging of iron and because in the last year no new goods instead of Friday the 23rd of January Anno 1791. Already on the 13th of October last, we were appointed by Your Right Honorable as commissioners and provided with everything necessary to be able to begin this work, but the dhonies of the Armane had not yet arrived, and we therefore had to wait several days for their arrival; for the commissioner who was charged by the English superintendent of Tirnevelli, Mr. Torin, with the affairs of the inspection on behalf of the Nabab, only arrived here on the 28th of October, being the Brahmin Nade Singe Raijer, and after he had brought the dhonies and the required people together, we deliberated with one another on how best to begin the inspection, and thereupon let, on Tuesday the 15th of November in the year 1791, the inspection dhonies, consisting of two of ours and two on behalf of the Nabab, depart for Patnamadoer, in order to be able to reach the first two or northernmost banks from there with greater ease, our dhonies being manned as follows. The dhoni of the undersigned with: 1 head mandarij named Jeronimus. 2 divers named Manuel Enrikoe and Santi Jago. 1 quartermaster, being the one from the sloop Gaele named Justinus Brand. 1 tandel named Saviel Mattijs, and 14 rowers. The dhoni of the native chiefs, being the oeloer saditalven Nicolaas George de Carralho and the pattangatyn minors Johan Sopes and Tomme Koettie, with: 1 bank mandanij named Saviel Pulle. 2 divers named Jose and Kroes. 1 tandel named Tomme de Kroes, and 12 rowers. In the afternoon we departed overland from here and arrived in Patnamadoer at nearly the same time as the dhonies. Wednesday the 16th, in the morning at sunrise, we put to sea with a light south-westerly wind, and by rowing and sailing arrived before eight o'clock at the bank Padoetan Markan paar, depth 6 to 6 1/2 to 7 fathoms of water. The visual landmarks are: The fort of Tuttekorijn West South-West 1/3 West. The beacon of Hare Island South-West by West. The south point of Kaswaris Island North-West. This bank is estimated to be 1/2 mile long and 1/8 mile wide, and lies 2 1/2 miles from Patnamadoer, the nearest shore. The wind was south and the work very manageable and advantageous. We began the inspection on the north side of this bank at quarter past eight and concluded it, after having been fully occupied there for three hours, at half past eleven at the south end in the following manner, namely: Koeritjanpaar, depth 6 1/2, 7 to 7 1/4 fathoms of water. The inspection began at the east end and, after we had been engaged in it for two hours, ended at the west side of the bank, with this result: The dhoni of the commissioners had divers go down from time to time 12 times along the bank, generally in 6½ fathoms of water, and obtained 9 live and 1 dead oysters. The dhoni of the native chiefs had divers go down 18 times in 6½, 7, and 7½ fathoms of water, and obtained 45 live and 12 dead oysters. The first dhoni of the Armane had divers go down 17 times at the same depths, and obtained 20 live and 14 dead oysters. The second dhoni of the Armane, whose crew had been exhausted by the work on the first bank, so that upon arriving at this bank they remained anchored in one and the same place without wishing to row up, had divers go down only three times, and obtained nothing but sea growth. Thereafter the oysters from each bank were put separately into bags and, duly sealed with the seals of ourselves and of the commissioners of the Armane, kept by us in the fort. Saturday the 19th, the 922 oysters from Waantieuw Aroepagepaak were opened in the presence of us and the commissioners of the Armane before your Right Honorable Commander, and the following pearls were found therein, namely: 136 pieces named Waddiwoe [illegible] pieces named Meelkallipoe kallipoe [illegible] pieces named otte moettoe 5 pieces named Tamedaijom 1 piece named kaijerel Friday the 18th in the morning before sunrise, we departed for sea and arrived by sailing and rowing at about 8 o'clock on the bank Waantieuw Aroepagepaak, at a depth of 6, 6½, 7, and 7½ fathoms of water. There were further added: 781 from Nageriepaak, 627 from Octie and Oedoedewiepaak, and 1122 from Klatipaak, making 3555 pieces in total, of which 2544 of 6 years 5 of 5½ years 831 of 5 years 172 of 4 years 3 of 2 to 2½ years. According to estimate, this bank is across and back ¼ mile long and wide, and lies 2½ miles from Tutukorijn, the nearest shore. The inspection began at nine o'clock at the north side of the bank, with the following result, namely: Sunday the 20th, we went out to sea again before sunrise with a calm southwest wind, and arrived at about nine o'clock on the bank Nageriepaar, at a depth of 7, 7½, to 8 fathoms of water. The visual bearings are: The island Allelande west-southwest; The fort of Tutukorijn west by north half north; The mountain Tannekoendel northwest by west; The high tree of the Ratten Island and the Bengoeloegoemalle west-northwest. Some small pearls named Poddiof gings, weighing 8¼ manjadies, to be seen in further detail upon demonstration. The thoni of the Native Chiefs had divers dive 20 times in 7, 7½, and 8 fathoms of water and obtained 174 live and 30 dead oysters. The first thoni of the Armane had divers dive 25 times in 7, 7½, and 8 fathoms of water and obtained 215 live and 37 dead oysters, and The second thoni of the Armane had divers dive 28 times at the same depths and obtained 209 live and 38 dead oysters. Having hereby reached the south end of the bank, after completing the inspection we departed from it at half past eleven, and subsequently had the thonis row to the adjacent banks, Octie and Oedoedewie paars, where we arrived past twelve o'clock at a depth of 7, 7½, and 8 fathoms of water. The visual bearings of the eye are: The island Allelande west-southwest; The beacon of Hare Island west by south. The inspection began past twelve at the north side of Octie paar and ended at half past two in the afternoon at the south end of the bank Oedoedewiepaak, with this result: The thoni of the Commissioners had 10 dives made in 7½ and 8 fathoms of water and obtained 104 live and 13 dead oysters. The thoni of the Native Chiefs had divers dive 22 times in 7, 7½, and 8 fathoms of water and obtained 190 live and 40 dead oysters. The first thoni of the Armane had divers dive 9 times in 7, 7½, and 8 fathoms of water and obtained 172 live and 23 dead oysters. The second thoni of the Armane had divers dive 17 times at the same depths and obtained 161 live and 19 dead oysters. These banks form one whole, estimated to be 3/8 mile long and fully 1/16 mile wide, and they lie 2½ miles from Tutukorijn, the nearest shore.
