to act defensively, to cover Cranganoor, to protect the Island of Baipin, and thus to prevent the enemy from breaking through any further, until having in the meantime strongly entrenched oneself before Cranganoor, opportunity and possibility might be seen to undertake something further. How, since the departure of our last letter to Batavia of 3 January, the entrenchment before Cranganoor has been brought nearly to completion, the drawing of which was produced, which fortification appeared to the assembly, according to its best knowledge, to be so strong that it would require a considerable force to master it and to break through there, all the more so since on that side one can be outflanked neither to the right nor to the left, as Cranganoor lies in a corner and is washed on the right and left side by the river. How in the meantime more and more great fear has been seen to take place with the kings of Trevancoor and Cochim, and it was clearly noticed that they will undertake nothing that looks in any way like an offensive, notwithstanding that a rumor is circulating, of which one has as yet no complete certainty, that the Marathas were about to descend upon the Nabab to take back from him some lands that he took away last year when the English were engaged with the Marathas, and that the Nabab's general Charder Chan has also in these days transferred authority to another, and as they say, is said to have been summoned to Sringapatnam, but has also taken our prisoners along. How he, the Governor, in order to test to what extent one could, in case of need, rely on Trevancoor and Cochim, informed their ministers in these days, who direct the affairs of war on this side: that our entrenchment is ready and everything necessary for the expedition is in readiness; that Charder Chan in person has turned northwards and even taken some of his people along, or at least that the troops of the Nabab have rather decreased than increased; that we are now intending to advance with our force to retake from the enemy that which he has taken from us, and whether they are now also ready to cross over and join together north of Cranganoor; and if not, whether they will not simply have their troops march northwards on the east side, or properly on the other side of the Cranganoor river, and make movements there, and also whether the coolies whom they have promised us have also been assembled. How they thereupon, after some evasions, finally declared that they had special orders from their masters not to go any further and to do nothing other than what they had done to this day, namely: to help prevent the enemy's further undertakings and even to resist by force of arms should he make movements to come south of Cranganoor, but otherwise not, with the anxious addition that if we march against the enemy and should drive him out of the Chettua region, the Nabab, who is a mighty prince, would then afterwards descend with his entire force and destroy all of Mallabaar, etc. How shortly thereafter the ordinary agent of Trevancoor came to inform the Governor that the king's minister had been suddenly summoned to His Highness, and that His Highness, having learned that the Honorable Company wished to act offensively and drive the enemy out of the sandy land, earnestly requested not to do so, for no reason whatever, before His Highness had spoken with him in person, and that His Highness was about to come here in person, expressly to speak with the Governor both about the present state of affairs and about several other matters of importance. How in the meantime the Batavia ship Groenendaal has arrived here, bringing the reply of Their High Mightinesses to the Nabab's letter of the month of May 1775, along with presents for the Nabab, of which the Governor immediately gave notice to the Nabab with an express letter through the channel of the new Governor of Calicoet. How a rumor has also spread that the Nabab wishes to declare the conduct of Charder Chan to have occurred without his orders, and that he has therefore ostensibly recalled Charder Chan. Upon which all of this was deliberated and taken into consideration, that in order to prevent all exceptions that might hereafter, by a turn of affairs, be made by the kings of Trevancoor and Cochim, it is equitable and even necessary to act by common counsel and to undertake nothing directly against their special request, at least as long as one is allied with them; that one also does not know what matters the king of Trevancoor might have to discuss; that besides this, a personal meeting under these present circumstances could generally be of use; that it is also known how discontented the Nabab has been that the answer to his letter written to Batavia has been delayed for so long, so much so that he had already let slip, according to the accounts of several foreigners who passed through here, that he would wake up the Dutch, without the Nabab having been willing to consider that

the ship the Princes van Orange had an uncommonly long voyage to Batavia, that the reply together with gifts having now arrived from Batavia, might very well provide occasion to settle matters. thus it was unanimously approved and agreed for the best service of the Honourable Company to persist still with our resolution of 19 November, to act for now only defensively, until the Governor has spoken with the King of Trevancoor and will have obtained a reply from the Nabab. Thus done, resolved and decreed in the Council of Mallabaar, at the city of Cochim, on the day, month, and year aforesaid, was signed: A: Moens, R: van Harn, P: E: Saffin, A: R: Schutz, A: I: Cellarius, and J: Vernede. Wednesday the 5th of March 1777, all present. After the members had taken their seats, the Governor presented a memorial which was read out and was of the following content: Honourable Sirs. Since a reply has now arrived from the Nabab, which we have awaited in accordance with our resolution of 20 January last, and we therefore now need to deliberate further with one another as to what we ought to do: I have deemed it necessary briefly to remind and demonstrate to Your Honours. How we, through the unexpected incursion of the Nabab's troops into Chettua and the conquest of Paponetty, resolved in our meeting of 13 October 1776 to make use of the assistance of the Kings of Trevancoor and Cochim, in order together with them to prevent the further encroachment of the Nabab's troops as far as possible, to which they also offered themselves and even immediately sent a portion of their troops across to Aycotta. How the King of Trevancoor, in that engagement, very explicitly declared to our commissioners who were sent to him for that purpose, that he would not go beyond the defensive, and thus also could not proceed to act offensively against the Nabab, because he had not yet been attacked by the Nabab himself. How we addressed Ceylon for assistance and resolved to request some sepoys from Coromandel, in order, supported with that assistance by the power of Trevancoor, to be able to prevent the Nabab's further encroachment. How we, having obtained considerable succour from Ceylon, would gladly have wished to attempt, besides preventing the enemy's further encroachment, also to deal him a severe blow, and thus avenge the insult inflicted upon the Honourable Company by him; all the more so since the ministers of Trevancoor and Cochim had promised that their troops would then also make a movement, which made us hope that they were becoming truly earnest in checking the threatening danger through effective means, although it has since appeared that they would not have done so. How we in the meantime, while we had the necessities required for an expedition prepared and brought into readiness, receiving news from Chettua that this fort could hold out no longer, considered that the loss of that fort would be very detrimental to us in every respect, and therefore the preservation and relief of the same was absolutely necessary. How we, having attempted to do so, but the same having failed and Chettua having fallen two days thereafter, restricted ourselves solely to the defensive, namely to maintain Aycotta and Cranganoor, and to entrench ourselves strongly, in order to prevent the enemy from all further encroachment. How, the entrenchments having been completed, a test was nevertheless made as to whether our allies, if we should undertake something, would indeed march along, as the ministers had initially promised, at least to alarm the enemy on the eastern side. How they, upon that direct attempt, openly declared to have no orders to do anything more than that which pertains to the general defence. How the King of Trevancoor, being apprehensive that we would then advance upon the enemy alone, very explicitly and in a virtually protesting manner requested that we not do so before he had first spoken with me. How, at just about that same time, the reply from Batavia with gifts for the Nabab was brought here per the ship Groenendaal, of which I immediately gave notice to the Nabab. How we, believing that this letter might provide occasion to settle the matter, thereupon resolved to remain still on the defensive, until I had spoken with the King of Trevancoor and should have obtained a reply from the Nabab. would, and as I stood ready to speak further with Your Honor concerning the lagging of Trevancoor and the Nabab's reply, on 21 February a copy was received here of a letter written from Seringapatnam to the Taljetter for communication, stating that our two captured officers were about to arrive here in full decency, with a letter addressed to me. How on 25 February Lieutenant Stip and the bookkeeper Riberto arrived here, the former captured during the Chettua expedition and the latter at the surrender of Chettua, who informed me that two Cariacaars or mace-bearers had accompanied them as far as Calicout with a letter from the Nabab addressed to me, who were to follow behind, that our captured soldiers out of poverty and want had taken service with the Nabab, but that on the other hand the other people, with women, children, and slaves who had been at Chettua, taken to Calicoet, and detained there until now, had likewise obtained permission to come here, who have also since arrived with the letter carriers; that Stip and Riberto had been instructed by the Nabab in person to tell me that he gladly wished to continue living in peace and friendship with the Company, in the hope that the Company on its side would also wish to do so, and that I would further see his good intentions from the letter he writes to me; likewise that having been presented with a robe of honor, with 100 Ropias in travel money and 50 ropijen in betel money, they had departed in a palanquin, with orders to the Calicout Governor to send them as well as the detainees at Calicut here by express vessels at the Nabab's expense; likewise that they had been asked at Seringapatnam by the Nabab himself how much damage the Company had suffered during the past troubles; that they had answered that they could not state this; that Stip had been asked what he had brought from aboard ship on behalf of the Company and had lost; that his answer had been, men, weapons, and war supplies; that he had then been asked specifically whether he had not brought and lost cash belonging to the Company, that his answer had been, no cash; that he had been requested, not by the Nabab but actually by Charder Chan, to provide written proof of the latter, namely that no cash had been lost; and further, that Riberto had been asked what damage the Company had suffered at the surrender of Chettua, that his answer had been that he could not say so from memory, that he had subsequently been asked how much cash, gold items, and jewels belonging to the Honorable Company had been in Chettua at the surrender, and that he had answered rather less than more than 1000 ropias in cash, but no gold items or jewels; that he had also been requested by Charder Chan to provide proof of this latter, namely that there had been no gold items or jewels of the Honorable Company in Chettua; and finally, that the Nabab had said to Stip and Riberto that the Honorable Company seemed very indifferent toward him, since they did not even answer his letters. How on the 1st of this month the two letter carriers arrived here and delivered to me a letter from the Nabab in the Canarese language, which I had translated as soon as possible, and also managed to get translated with great difficulty, as there is only a single Banyan here who still somewhat understands that language, the said letter reading as follows: I have always lived in good friendship with the Dutch Company, and it is known to Your Right Honorable that the land of Chettua belonged to the Calicout territory, and when my troops marched in that direction, those of the fort of Chettua fired upon mine, so I do not know what reason they had for this, yet my men suffered no harm on that occasion: I wish nothing other than to live in good friendship with the Dutch Company, to which end I send back the people who were brought from there. How after the departure of my latest original via Calicout I expressly sent a duplicate through the channel of a Roman priest, who managed to deliver it into the hands of a Roman priest in Seringapatnam, which latter is occasionally employed there in the Portuguese language, and had the opportunity to deliver the said duplicate letter into the hands of the Nabab personally, and also to obtain a letter in reply to deliver back to me, which I then also received on the 2nd of this month and likewise had translated from the Canarese as soon as possible, reading as follows: I have received, read, and understood the contents of Your Right Honorable's letters. Between me and the Dutch Company a sincere friendship has always been maintained, and on my part I have hitherto made not the slightest change in that regard; the land of Chettua was mortgaged to the Honorable Company by the King of Sammorijn for the sum of 20000 Ropias, and that amount has already been collected by the Honorable Company, and as much more during the period of 10 years, and that land belongs to the Calicout territory; therefore Charder Chan went thither with my troops to negotiate on that matter, at which time my men were fired upon, for

That the few lands which are under sequestration with us from the Zamorin and lie indeed more than an hour on this side of Chettua, effectively belong in property to the Nabab, and which we must allow him to dispose of if he so desires, although we could ask for the remaining principal that is still lacking thereon; so that the Nabab, wishing himself to manage those small lands or houses, however slight they may be, can always place people there and even, if he wanted to have a stronghold upon them, build a fortress, and it would thus be in his power to disturb us continually from there alone, and thus from close by. That it would therefore be the question, if the Nabab should once absolutely persist upon Chettua and what we possess in the Paponetty district, whether it would then indeed suit the Company, for the sake of that remote small fort and those few lands in Paponetty, to maintain an expensive war against this Nabab, whose element war seems to be; considering that the revenues according to the statement of the trade officials, after deduction of the burdens of the conquest of Paponetty, calculated on average over the last five years, have amounted annually to a sum of only ƒ19572:8:-, and Chettua over the last five years calculated on average has annually been a liability of ƒ3731:3:—, and thus from both an annual income of only ƒ15640. 17: 8. That besides this, to march out alone without Trevancore and the Cochin ruler, one has this difficulty, namely a lack of coolies, as the Company here has no persons obligated to feudal service, but free people, who, being forced against their will to any service, run off immediately; as was seen when the troops of the Nabab recently made the first incursion, at which time the coolies around here did not even want to come to work at the city and in the roadstead anymore, but gradually began to absent themselves on account of the dread and fear which the native has for the troops and cavalry of the Nabab, and never had so greatly for any other princes; so that one even had trouble bringing them back with gentle persuasion, yet since then cannot get them for any payment, however large, to the north or further than Cranganoor; for which reason, for the throwing up of our entrenchments before Cranganoor and Ayacotta, one had to make use of Travancore and Cochin coolies, whom one requested for that purpose from Trevancore and the Cochin ruler and also obtained, because those entrenchments served for the defensive. That when the last war was waged against Trevancore, one still had several native princes at hand, like the kings of Tekkencour and Berkencour, Porca, and others, who, as all native princes deal despotically with their inhabitants, then assisted us with their coolies, which now falls away since these princes were subdued by Trevancore. That nevertheless, in order to march out, one absolutely must have coolies, at least for the field artillery with its appurtenances, cartridge boxes, hammocks for the wounded, for provisions and further unavoidable necessities, and without the same one absolutely cannot march out, unless one had the native rounded up by military execution and forced to do coolie service; from which coolies, however, one would have nothing else to expect than that, although covered in the field by military force, they would take flight and leave us stranded with artillery and everything. That in the good monsoon one also cannot rely on the river to transport anything of importance over the same, because the same in the good monsoon or dry season north of Cranganoor up to Chettua already becomes very shallow in this and that place, and even fordable; a matter too well known to demonstrate further, not to mention that even from here to Cranganoor one already gets stuck now and then, as one has experienced more than once these days in transporting the necessities from here to Cranganoor, to the extent that one had to send empty vessels after them in order to unload part of the cargo and make the vessels get afloat. to accommodate them, or if these were not needed there, to transfer them back to the municipality here; yet, when the enemy invasion took place and further breakthroughs were feared, they passed to the Company, to say nothing of other items up to and including coconuts, dried fish, oil, and firewood, which the first undersigned had laid in, so that we could have accommodated the municipality for a long time still, although this could not have been assumed by Your High Nobilities from our stated fear of provisions being cut off, by which we meant that our further supply of provisions would have been cut off had the King of Cochim openly been forced to take the Nabab's side and had we, without the aid of Trevancoor and Cochim, not been able to keep the Nabab north of Cranganoor; as an argument for our decision, namely to prevent the further advance of the Nabab's troops together with Trevancoor and Cochim. From our letter of 2 January it appears how much Nelij, gunpowder, and further ammunition was at Chettua, and that this quantity of gunpowder from 6- and 3-pounder pieces must therefore have been expended unnecessarily and without consideration, although, after we received knowledge of the shortage of gunpowder there, two days before the surrender of the small fort, as many as 100 shots were fired in a single afternoon, and during the siege very little cannon fire was used by the enemy, only after the failed expedition to relieve it; so that it appears that confusion, along with the mutiny of the men and the fear of so many troops, which had already grown to over 8,000 and had already begun to bring up the storming ladders, was indeed the main cause of the fort's surrender, as has since become apparent; for Chettua is only a very small fort with four demi-bastions. That although all hostilities of the Nawab have indeed ceased, one has nevertheless still obtained no answer, neither to the letter of Your Right Excellencies, nor to the last letter of the first undersigned, notwithstanding that this letter was sent and delivered in duplicate. So that the Nawab, having seen that he cannot so easily break through south of Cranganore, undoubtedly delays his answer this long in order to see how his affair turns out with the Marathas, who still keep him troubled and stand against him in the field above Patna, the Nawab's place of residence, without us yet knowing with any certainty how far one or the other party has advanced, due to the manifold varying reports; or perhaps, that having now occupied what we formerly obtained from the Zamorin, and which the latter has always wanted to dispute with us, he now behaves as if the matter were thereby settled. That the apostate Chief of Chavakkad, named Ayderoos Cutty, who according to our letter of 5 May had united with the Zamorin Nairs, has dared to trust himself no longer at Chavakkad, but partly out of fear and partly due to discord between him and a chief of the Zamorin faction, has quietly sent his family to the south, and immediately thereupon also retired to the south, without it being rightly known where he stays, although it is believed that he might be in the Travancore Kingdom, and that the King would wink at this, as if we know nothing of Ayderoos Cutty. That the Zamorin Nairs, not having been able to get over the hurdle, have again retreated into the woods and into the mountains, yet still continually carry out raids and sorties, although in this month a raspaal of sepoys, as it is so called among them, being a troop of 700 men, has come down from upcountry to Calicut, supposedly, as is claimed, to relieve others who will go back upcountry, of which departure one as yet hears nothing, so that this reinforcement has undoubtedly come down to help further restrain the rebelling Zamorin Nairs. It was indeed a close thing, or the Zamorins might possibly have carried it quite far, had they not, through the Nawab's tributary northern princes of Kolattiri and Kadathanadu, been forced to send auxiliary troops on the Nawab's orders. To which was also added that the Paliath Achan, or the Cochin first minister of state, a mortal enemy of the Zamorin House, under pretext of covering his northern places against the outrages and raids that are to be expected on such occasions, also sent some of his Nairs northwards, who were then, as it were, forced by the Nawab's ministers to offer joint resistance. The first undersigned, in accordance with what was already previously noted by him in his last separate letter to Your Right Excellencies of 5 May last, could then already perceive to some extent that the Paliath Achan does not know which way to turn, in order on the one hand to keep the Nawab as his tributary lord as a friend in a covert manner, and on the other hand to hide his past intentions from us and the Travancore. In my separate dispatch of the 5th of May, I had the honor to inform Your High Nobilities that it was then thought that the French had sent an embassy to the Marathas to request a place on the Maratha coasts in order to establish a lodge there; since then, I have learned more specifically that someone was indeed at the Pune Court for that purpose, and specifically to request a port on the Maratha coasts, but that the English Ministry at Bombay, having caught wind of this, immediately, through the Agent who is always at the Pune Court on behalf of the English, had it declared in the most emphatic terms to the Maratha Government that if they, the Marathas, should enter into the slightest engagements with the French, they, the English, would then de facto again choose the side of the pretender Ragaboij; and that the French, therefore, would not have achieved their purpose, although it is nevertheless believed that a small French ship was permitted to winter in one of the Maratha ports this bad monsoon, solely because the monsoon had passed and the vessel had some defects, on account of which it could not put to sea. The letter from the Marathas mentioned in my aforementioned last separate dispatch of the 5th of May has since been delivered to Travancore, but was held suspect by this ruler, either as a ruse of the Nabab to see how one here would behave upon the receipt of such a letter—being, according to information obtained, of roughly the same content as that addressed to the king of Cochin—or else as a practice of one or another Maratha vagabond to obtain some presents upon delivering such letters, which Travancore thinks could easily take place in this case, because many native rulers, instead of signing their letters, only validate them with their seal, which seal is not known to the kings of Cochin and Travancore, so that the king of Travancore has detained the deliverer of the letter; while I have also received news from the Lord of Vlissingen that the letter intended for Negapatnam was not delivered there. Meanwhile, I would gladly hold an oral conference with the king of Travancore, for which, especially since the hostile incursion of the Nabab's troops, I have very much longed, out of fear that all matters are not properly or adequately presented to the king, as it is even a custom with this king not to read his letters himself.

Therefore, I recently went specifically to Coilan, having departed on the 16th of this month and returned on the 22nd thereafter, under the pretext of going to inspect the southern Residencies, and in particular to see how far the repairs to Fort Coilan have progressed (pursuant to the authorization granted for that purpose by Your High Excellencies in a separate missive of the 30th of September 1773, which had proceeded gradually and is now almost completed), in the hope of enticing the King of Trevancoor, who resides only twelve hours from Coilan, to a verbal conference, all the more so as I knew that he had long desired to meet me. This would have succeeded now as well, had not His Highness indeed been very ill, and moreover found himself in circumstances that I shall have the honor to mention presently. Nevertheless, His Highness had me very kindly complimented, expressing his regret that, while I was precisely in these parts, he was unable to speak with me on account of his illness. Upon which I sent a confidant with a letter to be delivered into His Highness's own hands, with a compliment regarding the arrangements that His Highness had ordered throughout his lands to facilitate my journey, and in which I likewise expressed my regret that we could not meet, the more so because I needed to speak with His Highness about matters of weight concerning the prosperity of his Kingdom, which ought to be negotiated by ourselves in person, unless His Highness had a trusted Minister upon whom he could securely rely, requesting that he send such a person to me without further delay, just as His Highness had already promised me some time ago to send one of his principal Ministers to me. Thereupon, the King had my envoy come to him, opened the letter himself, read it himself, and subsequently spoke with him alone, while everyone else had to remain outside (a rarity never before seen with this monarch), and gave an account of the circumstances in which His Highness has found himself for some time and still finds himself, with instructions to report everything back to me. This envoy returned barely an hour before I was to write this, and has reported to me on the King's behalf: That the King has already for some time been very ill and languishing, without truly knowing what ailed him, which illness was of such a nature that he felt omens of death more than once and thought he would immediately expire. That the King repeatedly consulted the Brahmins and the scholars among them regarding this, and as they were unable to discover the cause of this illness, His Highness finally had to presume that he had been bewitched (it being an accepted truth among the Malabars that anyone wishing to have more than ordinary influence over another knows how to employ a so-called magical charm, whereby the other person is as if blinded, believes and does everything he is told, and subsequently surrenders himself entirely and blindly to the promoter of that scheme). The King eventually believed this so firmly that he began to develop some distrust toward his Prime Minister, who enjoyed the most ardent favor with His Highness, indeed had virtually a carte blanche with the monarch, and held complete sway over His Highness, yet also knew how to keep all other court dignitaries and servants at a certain distance from the Court and permitted no conversation with the King except in his presence. That this Prime Minister, having undoubtedly noticed that the King was beginning to harbor some suspicions about him, although His Highness had not yet made it apparent to him, nevertheless passed away very suddenly these past days, or rather was unexpectedly found dead, or, as is the general opinion, is said to have poisoned himself. That immediately thereupon an investigation and inquiry was made, and among other things it was discovered that in the King's pillow various items were found which the natives consider to be an infallible charm and blinding agent. That it was then also discovered that this Minister had performed various matters in the King's name of which the King had never known. That His Highness was finally convinced by all circumstances and discovered evidence that the aforesaid Minister had indeed played this trick on him. That His Highness has thereupon already caused four prominent persons, who belonged to this Minister's faction, to be put to death.
