Notice of such merchandise, provisions, and other goods as have been purchased here at this main office from the first of October 1788 to the last of August 1789, showing their quantity and prices, to wit: [illegible] were married in the year 1769, and at that time, in accordance with the well-known order, executed a solemn deed to raise the children issuing from their marriage in the Reformed religion, had, notwithstanding this engagement, raised their children in the Roman Catholic religion. § 263. Because, as appears from the report submitted thereupon by the Merchant and Fiscal, Mr. Jan Willem Hendrik van Rossum, which was inserted in the resolution of the 9th of March last, it could neither at the secretariat nor among the papers of the church council be discovered what punishment is established against the violators of that law: we have therefore decided to deport the said soldier Ernhard as a sailor at ƒ 9.- a month, and to put the wife on water and rice in the custody of the jailer for the period of one month and have her sweep the streets daily, as well as to have their three daughters taken to the orphanage, 190. punishment determined for those who do such. to be instructed in the truths of the Reformed religion. § 264. In order in the future better to maintain the aforesaid order that children from marriages between Protestants and Roman Catholics must be educated in the first-mentioned religion, we have on the same day decreed that when parents who act against this law are of rank, the father shall be dismissed from the Company's service and banished with the mother from this government, and that this latter shall also take place regarding respectable burghers, but that non-commissioned officers and commoners of the militia, artillery, and navy shall be punished with running the gauntlet or degraded and sent away from here in the lowest rank, but their wives, for a determined time according to the findings of the case, 191. further arrangements regarding that. In the resolutions of the 26th of June and 7th of September 1789 are inserted the six-monthly reports of the Curator ad lites, showing that the balances of the estates accepted by him have been properly transferred into the Company's treasury, as this was further proved by the report of the special commissioners who examined the accounts, inserted in the resolution of the 25th of September.

An orphan boy has been found infected and placed at Paliporto. Four assistants deserted and delivered back again. Lepers. Section 323. A name list is transmitted of the lepers who are maintained at Paliporto; the orphan boy Johan Rijk mentioned therein was, after examination, found to be infected and, according to our resolution of 23 December 1789, placed at Paliporto. Section 324. The deserters are shown below and on a separate list; the number of the same consists of 8 Europeans, 5 Topasses, and 1 Easterner. Section 325. In the beginning of this Section 27, we have already reported that four assistants deserted from here and were delivered back again by the English of Baroe. Desertion of a quartermaster and lately three sailors. Also a soldier. A captured sailor who was captured in 1776 has returned. Section 326. Furthermore, a soldier who deserted from here in the month of October has also been returned to us by the Dewan of the King of Travancore. Section 327. On 14 February last, a quartermaster and three sailors deserted from here with a ballang, who were not overtaken again and, according to rumour, arrived at Anjengo. Section 328. The sailor Christiaan Dirksz Lus, who was taken prisoner of war in the year 1776 before Pettua by the Nabob Haider Ali and has since been in service with him and with Tipu Sultan, returned to us on 14 December 1789. has been entered in the armory, from which we note here: That among the remainder of 5788 firelocks, there are only: 1841 serviceable ones with bayonets; 450 (the report says between 400 and 500) that still need to be sorted and are mostly without bayonets; 235 that must have new stocks; 1728 that must be repaired in locks and brass fittings; and 295 that require repairs to the stocks, locks, and fittings. However, all these firearms are already so old and mostly so worn out in the service that they quickly become unfit for use again, whereby the work in the armory is very much multiplied, which otherwise, in case of war and especially of a siege, presents a worrisome prospect because one cannot rely on such bad firearms. §347. We therefore hope that it will merit the approval of Your Right Excellencies that we have decided to make an order for new firearms all at once, partly to avert the danger that accompanies such bad firearms, but partly also to observe economy; for we shall probably be able to sell the old firearms to the Malabar rulers without considerable, perhaps even without any loss, and the work in the armory will thereby be so noticeably diminished that the extraordinary workforce will be able to be discharged. §348. Although, after making our ordinary requisition and the request made therein for five hundred lasts of rice, we found an opportunity to contract with the Portuguese merchant Laurero for six thousand bags of Bengal rice at 5¼ rupees per bag, as noted in our resolution of the 11th of this month, into which the written contract is inserted; yet we do not dare firmly rely on this to reduce the request we made, since crop failure or prohibition of export in Bengal, and shipwreck or other sea disasters on the voyage always leave the outcome uncertain; besides which we need more than five hundred lasts, and our requisition for it was limited to only one shipload, because we also counted on such private purchases as this one from Laurero. §349.
