81 The 30th October In the city of Cochin Anno 1770 to add anything to it that is contrary to Your Highness's pleasure, so I can only hope that they will make a complete report of everything in writing. Yet, even if this does not happen in writing as completely as I think it could take place verbally, I nevertheless do not doubt in the least that Your Highness will otherwise already be informed of the true nature of the matter, if Your Highness has only had the goodness to let the Resident of Cranganore Lucasz come to you. For he had already been dispatched by me before Your Highness had even requested such of me. I have given him a short letter for Your Highness and the necessary proofs, and if Your Highness would only be pleased to inspect them, then I rest assured that Your Highness will immediately become convinced that the King of Cochin complains without reason, and that he, driven by nothing other than bad counsel, has fallen into such extravagance that he troubles Your Highness with his complaints. I Cochin The 30th October In the City Anno 1770 I know well that the King of Cochin will entertain Your Highness much in order to justify this bad step, but I also know that Your Highness possesses far too much wisdom to give credence to mere words; if the King of Cochin can show the least proof that I have ever borne him malice, or that in the present dispute I have asked more of him than that which is right and equitable, and lawfully belongs to the Honourable Company, then I may well suffer that Your Highness renounces your friendship with me. But if he is not capable of confirming his assertions, as I know he is impossibly able to do, then I also hope that Your Highness will treat him according to his deserts.
