And in whose place I made an adoption into the house of Maddatiel Caijmaal, and the adopted person having passed away, for lack of an heir, some covetous people took advantage of that opportunity and sold the estates of that house to others in a clandestine manner, wherefore those of Coesiekatto and I had taken those lands to ourselves. But now recently, the said Coesi Catto, corrupted by money, sold some lands in a secret manner, and subsequently used his utmost efforts to have those lands turned over by the buyer, while in the meantime the said Koesicetto in January of last year had the crop that I had sown cut down, for which reason I, using reprisals, had his crop harvested. 1771. Thereupon Coesikatto went with his complaint to the Resident of Paponettij, who, on the mere say-so of the said Coesi Catto, had all my lands seized and prohibited. Previously, my uncle had leased a garden to one of his vassals, to which Coesi Kattij laid claim, saying that that garden belonged to him; and to that end, making his grievances known to the Resident who departed in 1770, the latter had the matter investigated by impartial arbitrators, who rendered a verdict that that garden did not belong to Coesikattij, but rather to me. Thus I was placed in possession of the same. But the present Resident pretends that that garden belonged to Coesikattij and not to me, thus attempting by seizures as well as otherwise to destroy that garden. The land named Pottencoesij belongs to me, and my uncle has leased the same out. Now the Resident pretends 1771. The 23rd of February. In the city of Cochin that the said land should belong to Coesikattij, to which end the Resident constrains all my subjects and forbids them to pay any lease rent to me, and moreover the Resident torments all those people in an unreasonable manner. All these impertinences the Resident commits merely upon the denunciation and instigation of certain untrustworthy Moors and a certain Alemballato Narana Pattre, who have been admitted by him, in a Conquest where under the governance of your Right Honourable Sir the inhabitants dwell as safely and peacefully as ever in any place in Malabar, whereby your Right Honourable Sir enjoys great praise and renown; but through the tyrannies of the Resident, neither I nor the inhabitants have any peace in the land. Furthermore, they said that His Highness had derived great joy from the receipt of the ola from the Right Honourable, whereby notice was given to His Highness of the departure of the Right Honourable Lord Governor and the accession of His Honour to the supreme administration of this Coast, denoting a sign that the Right Honourable wished to live on good terms with His Highness; that such was also the true intention of His Highness, yet that there might well be wicked people who would seek to mislead the Right Honourable and sow discord between His Highness and His Honour. Therefore it was the request of His Highness that Cochim His Honour would not give credit to those evil reports before and until he should make a careful investigation. The Right Honourable Lord Commander, having heard all this, thanked the King first of all for the congratulations offered on his accession to the administration, and said at the same time that it was very dear and agreeable to him to hear such good sentiments from His Highness, giving assurance that the Right Honourable's endeavour would be none other than to do justice to everyone and to act with modesty, especially toward crowned heads, for whom His Honour always had respect, particularly when they remain within the bounds of reasonableness and conduct themselves royally, namely keeping their word and attending to the welfare of the inhabitants. 407 The 19th of April In the city of Cochim Friday before noon the Sarwadakariakar of the King of Travancore named Coemara Poesa arrived within this city, and made known to His Right Honourable that his master, having understood the departure of the Right Honourable Lord Governor Senff and the assumption of the supreme authority of this coast by His Right Honourable, had expressly ordered him to undertake the journey hither and therewith to congratulate His Right Honourable. For which courtesy the Lord Commander having thanked him, he added further to the same that His Right Honourable had not failed, according to old custom, already to communicate the assumption of the administration by a letter to His Highness, which had been sent through the address of Jonanda Mallen together with the requested pepper passes, but he replied thereto that that letter had not yet been delivered there when he took his leave of the King. 1771. The 19th of April In the City of Cochim 1771 Furthermore, that courtier said that his master's desire and wish was nothing other than to maintain unalterably the old friendship and harmony between him and the King of Cochim and the Honourable Company. His Right Honourable answered him thereto that his master would perceive no change in that regard on his side, as His Right Honourable's intention is nothing other than to live in good harmony with all the friends and allies of the Honourable Company as long as the same did not fail in the contracts. Further, speaking of the delivery of the pepper, the said Sarwadakariakar promised that his master would not fail to fulfill that which His Highness had already caused to be assured to the Lord Commander. Furthermore, His Right Honourable brought up the article of the old debt of Attingal, under the declaration that His Right Honourable knew very well that his master had not settled that account, nor could he show any proof, repeating on this occasion everything that His Right Honourable had already made known in that regard through messages, and that His Right Honourable once again advised His Highness not to remain wavering any longer regarding it, but rather to come straight out, as otherwise His Right Honourable would have to do something that His Highness would not like to see, and yet would have to. But then the Sarwadakariakar answered that his master had ordered him, Cochim The 19th of April In the City in case His Right Honourable might again urge this so strongly, then just to confess straight out that that old debt of Attingal had not been liquidated up to now, wherefore His Highness was resolved to pay the same, provided that His Right Honourable were to grant the King a term of 10 years, within which His Highness would settle that amount with the delivery of pepper. It is true, said the Sarwadakariakar, that his master had formerly undertaken to show to the previous rulers with proofs that that account was liquidated and thus His Highness was not obliged to pay a single doit more thereof, but now during the administration of His Right Honourable, His Highness did not wish to occupy himself with pretexts, because His Highness had heard that His Right Honourable was so straightforward and had a disgust for reserve, and more other praises and compliments of which His 1771. 411 The 19th of April In the City of Cochim Right Honourable did not desire to keep record; and as a proof of His Highness's true and sincere intention, he did not wish to keep this matter lingering any longer. The Lord Commander, having heard such, testified that it was very dear and agreeable to His Right Honourable to hear this resolute decision of His Highness, but it being to be wished that the payment could take place within a few years; and since the said Sarwadakariakar strongly insisted thereon that the fulfillment could only take place within the time of 10 years, as otherwise it would fall too heavy upon His Highness, His Right Honourable promised the same that His Right Honourable would write on that point to the advantage of His Highness to Their High Mightinesses at Batavia and ensure that it was arranged in that manner. It being further resolved that concerning this matter His Right Honourable would write a letter 1771. Cochim to the King of Travancore, and that His Highness in answer thereof would send a written assurance, as a proof that the old debt of Attingal would be settled, in the manner aforementioned. Furthermore, the Sarwadakariakar addressed His Right Honourable concerning the trade of the Jaffnapatnam tobacco, declaring that that trade should belong to His Highness alone, with the request that His Right Honourable would give orders that the tobacco brought here might be delivered only to His Highness. His Right Honourable answered thereto that he could do the King no pleasure in this, that the trade is free, and that if His Highness is pleased to be the sole master of the tobacco, His Highness can be that of himself when His Highness offers the highest price to the people, but that His Right Honourable cannot bring himself to compel the inhabitants to sell their tobacco to His Highness. Saturday morning, according to the draft ceremonial, the deputies went at 6 o'clock to the ordinary palace of the King of Cochim at Mattancherij with the orembai; the King having been fetched and brought inside, His Highness was received at the steps by the Right Honourable Lord Commander, and thereupon led to the audience hall, where seats having been taken, and the compliments having been paid from both sides, the King requested that he might speak a word with His Honour alone; the gentlemen members thus having been requested to go into an apartment, His Highness related with a sort of shame how needy he was, what grief he had suffered for some time now, and how the Right Honourable Lord Governor Senff in the last days of his administration had formed a claim against His Highness regarding the limits of this city, which he had already possessed from time immemorial; and although he had shown his clear proofs and titles of ownership to His Right Honour, His Right Honour nevertheless had not been willing to grant a hearing to them, nor pay the slightest reflection to his condition; therefore, having heard that His Honour was to come hither as Commander, he had exercised patience in everything, and had already reported concerning these disturbances to His Honour by letter; wherefore it was the request of His Highness that His Honour would write in favor of His Highness to the High Government at Batavia, and see to it that His Highness might again be reinstated in his old possession, all of which was brought forward very tediously and with continuous digressions of words. To this the King replied with a cheerful countenance that he lived in the expectation that the High Government at Battavia would restore him again to his old possessions and properties, since Their High Mightinesses were fully aware under what circumstances and in what impoverished state His Highness found himself. The Honourable Lord Commander answered him on this that if His Highness held such good expectations, he could all the more excuse His Honour from writing in His Highness's favour. After which the Honourable Lord Commander followed with some friendly expressions, and once more assured His Highness of his peaceful nature, so that His Highness was very glad and declared that during this visit he had received all satisfaction from the Lord Commander, indeed more than His Highness had imagined. Subsequently, the King very kindly requested on behalf of his commander, the Paljetter, that the notice that had been issued against him declaring him a rebel might be withdrawn, since His Highness was fully convinced that he had undertaken nothing against the Honourable Company, and in case he might have done so, His Highness, whose subject the Paljetter was, would have him punished according to his deserts. But the Honourable Lord Commander, not yet intending to comply with that request, diverted His Highness from this point, replying only that all things do not proceed as easily and quickly as one sometimes imagines, and that His Honour was sorry that His Highness interested himself so much in that Paljetter. Thereupon the King touched that string no further, but nevertheless made another request to His Honour, that His Honour would please not accept the reports of evil people, since here on the Mallabaar there were many instigators and harmful instruments who sought nothing other than to cause disturbances between the Honourable Company and the King in order to play their own game under that cover, for one turbulent person was quite capable of throwing the entire kingdom into unrest, as the outcome showed. His Honour commended the King's request and assured His Highness that such a sort of people would find no hearing with him, as His Honour well knew how one ought to deal with such people.
