93 The 20th of January in the city of Cochim as having been specially instructed on this matter, with a shrug of their shoulders and making some confidential and guarded gestures, gave it to be understood that the Right Honourable, who was still ailing at the time, was not only very vexed about that incident and had grown worse because of it, but also, as they could perceive from every circumstance, intended not to let the matter rest there, but either to take satisfaction himself de facto or else first to demand striking satisfaction directly from His Highness concerning it; and that they feared further consequences in this case, as they knew the Right Honourable, on the one hand, to be good-natured and accommodating, but, on the other hand, absolutely resolved not to permit the slightest infringement upon the Company's authority, but to risk the uttermost on it and not to rest before he had satisfaction. Whereupon Coemara Poela pulled them aside and requested that they would please catch the Right Honourable in a good mood in the year 1772 The 28th of January in the city of Cochim to dissuade him from any undertakings, not even to express himself about it, much less to write to His Highness concerning it, before he had investigated the matter and conferred with the Right Honourable. On the 30th of January in the city of Cochim Anno 1772: on which occasion it may easily have happened that a container was plucked from a tree and a small bundle of tobacco was lost; to all of which Ananda Mallen further added that if his Right Honourable were willing to have the matter investigated, he would find it to be so, requesting that this incident nevertheless be considered a misunderstanding. His Right Honourable said to all this that Ananda Mallen must either be very well instructed by Coemara Poela or indeed very well trained himself to give the matter such a spin, but that he might well have refrained from an expression which his Honour will never hear or tolerate, namely that his Highness had at first intended to counteract the sale of the Palcatcherij tobacco himself in one way or another; that his Honour knows of no other way than the Company's prohibition, and that if the Company did not wish to prohibit it, his Honour would like to know what other manner of prevention remained. Two ships belonging to my master have been to Bengal, of which one has sailed out to sea from the port of Ravena and the other from Calcutta, and have undertaken their journeys hither, according to letters from the Nakhodas appointed thereto. I have understood that 107 The 6th of February in the city of Cochin, Anno 1772: that two gurabs and five galwats of the pirates have passed to the south. Therefore I have prepared two letters and sent the same per a thoni under the care of Chetty and Pakoro to Cochin, containing instructions that when they arrive at that latitude and perceive no pirates at sea, they should then continue their voyage as quickly as possible; and if they should perceive that the pirates are roaming at sea and, being anxious to proceed on their course, they should then write me a letter about this so that I might provide them with a safe conduct.
