Wherewith, after attentive review, it was understood to express satisfaction; As also to note down here the rebate fallen on the printed linens accepted on the 3rd of this month, being as follows: Corges 9. — Chintz broad ordinary of 9 Wisas for Macassar, as: 3. 2nd sort and 6. 3rd ditto 8. – Chintz narrow ordinary of 6 Wisas for Batavia, all 3rd sort 4 — ditto Sironj of 6 ditto for ditto, 2nd sort cotton 10. pieces of patolas of 5 hastas; of which 31. and 10. and 10 pieces 2nd sort, and 21. — pieces 3rd ditto 4. and 10 pieces cotton patolas of 6 hastas, all 3rd sort The fallen 397. 421 The 5th of April Decided to divide the cloths that do not fully meet the sample into 2 sorts The previous method of not determining the sum or percentage of the rebate on a fixed basis, but according to how one judged the difference with the sample or the defects to be large, having been found difficult and subject to several inconveniences, because a singular and almost impossible attentiveness was required in order to appraise cloths of the same quality equally to within one percent when they were presented for acceptance on different days, and not sometimes to rebate slightly more or less on the one than on the other of equal quality, the Lord Director has considered means to remedy this; and has therefore, as the best and most certain way to prejudice the Honorable Company as little as the printers, proposed to divide the cloths that do not fully meet the sample into two sorts, thus to declare as second sort those that are slightly below the sample or a little worse than the first sort, and as third those that differ more, but are nevertheless still acceptable, as well as to set fixed prices on both these sorts, and all that cannot reach the 3rd sort 398. The 5th of April Upon the proposition of the Lord Director and for the reasons given thereof, it is approved that the southwest bastion of His Honor's dwelling, and to regulate the rebate accordingly to reject entirely and return again to the suppliers; wherewith the assembly decided to fully conform, as well as to remind the bazaar commissioners once and for all that the second and third sorts of the assortments for the Fatherland must always be packed for the Indies, under the necessary notation on the packing slip. Thereafter it being presented by His Honor that in the whole courtyard there is no suitable place to hold meetings, since this is not possible in His Honor's cramped dwelling without being able to be overheard from all sides, for which reason one has also hitherto been obliged to meet on the adjoining southwest bastion, that during the hot or dry season one has indeed been able to manage there, but that in the approaching bad monsoon in cold weather this will be impracticable, as one will not be able to stay there on account of rain, wind, and cold; that besides the aforesaid bastion there is also no place that could be appropriated for this purpose except at great expense, since one would be obliged to make an express apartment for that purpose, which under the present state of government here would be subject to much difficulty, His Honor proposing

His Honour's proposal therefore, to avoid trouble and expenses, to enclose with planks inside and out the aforesaid gallery, which is covered from above with a terrace or flat roof but is sufficiently enclosed, and to put glass windows therein, as well as to shut it off on the side of the outer gallery with a door, whereupon that place would be fully suitable for the aforesaid use, it was, after consideration thereof, unanimously concluded to conform to the above proposition and to convert the same into a formal resolution. Upon resumption of the letters written hither by the Ahmedabad servants on the 21st of February and 29th of March, along with their enclosures, there first occurred the sale made by them in the past month of the last 100 canassers of powder sugar at f 26:5:12 the 100 lb free money, yielding an advance of 62 3/8 percent, as can be seen from the following insertion: Sale of sugar powder to the merchant, weighed out on the 16th of March Anno 1759: Purchase encumbered with expenses Sale after deduction of brokerage, Tul and make in cash Profit The hundred pounds and percent f 16:2:11/16 f 26:5:12 f 10:3:2. 62: 3/8. 411. 435 The 10th of April Having been warned that they concerning the completed mission to Poona must be careful to charge nothing for which the Junior Assistant Von Schmidt could not take the oath. It having been resolved on the occasion of a mission undertaken by the Rajapore Commissaries Sanderus and Van der Sleyden to the Court of Poona, and the expenses caused thereby, to warn them that in their specification to be sent thereof they should be careful not to enter any penny for which they, or the Junior Assistant Von Smitt employed on the commission, could not take the oath if required; subsequently, also upon their assurance given in that regard by letter of the 25th of the aforesaid month, that they could jointly swear to the expenditure and disbursement, the aforesaid specification amounting to ƒ5528:15:— was validated to their credit on the 5th of April following, provided that sufficient security be given for restitution in case the High Indian Government should not be pleased to pass the same; regarding which the said Commissaries having requested by letters of the 17th of that month that the one might stand surety for the other, but this having been flatly refused to them according to the resolution of the 28th ditto for reasons mentioned therein, and it nevertheless appearing from their trade books that they have brought to account the aforesaid sum as actually received from the treasury; 412. Furthermore, a Report was resumed from the Honorable Head Administrator concerning various errors discovered upon the closing of the trade books, being of the following content: To 426. 445 469 The 24th of April would presumably have heard what His Honour recently did in the case of the broker Mantchergie, who, upon his remonstrance, was released again on the very same day he was arrested; that what had occurred regarding this was solely the fault of Mantchergie, because on that day, while entertaining a great number of people of his nation, some sepoys of the Naib addressed a certain Parsi—who, according to ancient custom, had not yet brought any gift to their masters on the occasion of his installation in the government—for some greens, and this person had refused them. High words arising from this, Mantchergie's brother had come out of the house and cursed the sepoys, with Mantchergie standing at a window encouraging him, whereby his brother finally went so far as to strike the Naib's people, and that thereupon orders were given to apprehend him along with several other Parsis and bring them before the Naib, on which occasion some Parsis under English protection were also arrested, but subsequently released again. Thereupon Mantchergie, possibly heated by drink, had immediately gone to the Naib himself, uttering many improper words, among others: "Who is Faroschan; what, would he dare have my brother apprehended?" and similar things, and had also spoken very boldly at the house of the Naib himself, which, having irritated the latter, caused him to keep him under arrest as well. To which we replied that, concerning the case of the shipment, we were not instructed to speak of it, but that, since His Honour brought it up, we could assure him that there had been no intention whatsoever to curtail the Regents in their rights, nothing other having been shipped than cash, which pays no toll, and that the bad response given to the deputies of the Naib, who were sent to prevent it, was caused by the total ignorance of the Moorish language on the part of the Master of the Equippage Falck. 45 The 24th of April Falck, not understanding the said people and hearing talk of a Parwana, thought that there was a Parwana, and that they nevertheless wished to hinder the shipment, and therefore had proceeded with it.
