A little after sunset, all came to anchor at the signal of the flag-bearer, and we then saw that the boat also came to anchor with a grapnel near the shore, by no means doubting that when the ships set sail again, the said boat would follow as well. 740 The 12th November Having been enjoined this month to conduct an inquest into how the delinquent Hendrik Silbij, an Englishman by birth, who was condemned to death for repeated desertion, who had already been notified of his death sentence, and for that reason was kept without irons or bonds in the jailhouse on the premises of the undersigned’s residence, escaped from there at night between the 28th and 29th (when the undersigned was at the roads with the commissioners) of the past month around half past one o’clock, in order to perform his office and duty before the Court of Justice of this Office against those who might be the cause thereof through neglect of duty or otherwise; he has the honour to report that the soldier William Crasm Goulder, known in the Company’s books by the name of Willem Collens (see his declaration annexed hereto under Letter A), testifies that he was posted on sentry duty in front of the jail at one o’clock at night, at which time the delinquent had been lying on the ground there, yet being awake; that he subsequently, as usual, paced back and forth at his post in front of the door of the same, since some peons or native soldiers of the undersigned kept watch inside; that one of the same, around half past one o'clock, having gone, as he supposed, to the place destined for a natural necessity, being around the corner of the said jailhouse, had immediately returned and made known to him that the imprisoned Englishman had broken out, having managed to open a small door that opens out next to the privy and thus to escape, as will further appear to your Right Honourable and Worships from a certificate annexed hereto under Letter B from the peon Hassemchan, namely that he, the declarant, around half past one o’clock, not because he had to attend to a requirement of nature as the sentry maintained, but because he had heard a cracking sound as if a branch of a tree or something else broke, after having awakened his sleeping comrade to watch the prisoner in the meantime, had gone outside, to behind the jail 7 The 12th November behind the jail to see what was going on, and coming back had found that a small door beside or around the corner of the jail was standing half open, and looked inside and saw that the delinquent who had been sitting there was no longer there, and immediately gave notice thereof to the aforementioned Goulder, who also immediately raised the alarm, whereupon the sergeant on duty Ian Fredrik Erlich together with the corporal Thomas Ter Beek, as appears from their attestations given under offering of oath and annexed hereto marked Letter C and D, immediately arrived there and learned from said Goulder that the delinquent had escaped, whereupon said sergeant went in person as quickly as possible to the north-east gate, and had sent corporal Ter Beek to the south-west gate, but that neither of them had seen or encountered said Selbij. From all the above it is evident (subject to correction of wiser judgment) that the sentry William Goulder cannot be suspected directly or indirectly of neglect of duty, since he, standing and remaining at his post, could not possibly know what was happening inside at the back; that a very large branch of the tamarind tree actually broke that night, which lends great probability to the deposition of the peon Assemchan, who, having awakened his comrade when he went outside to see what was cracking, likewise cannot be judged to be guilty thereof, but rather the other, Maddencham, who, having immediately absconded, has thereby given cause to suspect that he fell asleep again instead of keeping proper watch, although it might also be that he was awake and is hiding out of an unfounded fear, since the peons are not accustomed to go inside the secret or privy with the prisoners, but remain standing outside in front of the door, to drive him out of the service after a sensible correction, which it does not appear that the first-mentioned has merited.
