833 8611 The 17th of December The head of the English, as governor of the Castle, having been given the title of Honourable by the Director, his Honour also being able to observe: In the letter to the new English Chief, Mr. Price, and his Council, of which mention was made in the resolution of the 8th of this month, having been given, in his capacity as Castle Governor, the title of Honourable or Noble, in the hope and expectation that he likewise would make no difficulty in addressing the Director, as a Member of the High Indian Government, in the same manner, instead of the until now affected Worshipful or Respectable; the more so because the English Ministry at Calcutta has never hesitated to give that title to his Honour and his predecessors in the Directorate of Bengal, even when they were not recognized with the rank of Member of the Council of Netherlands India; but the named gentleman having seen fit, in the reply sent thereto, to follow the old footing, without paying heed to the notification of his Honour's promotion that was repeatedly given to him in abundance, as can be seen from the translation of that letter which is to be found among the translations; and consequently it having been judged that one ought not to allow this to pass unnoticed, as tending to 12 The 17th of December and having failed in that regard, the following decision is taken: the slighting of the dignity of his Honour's rank and to give themselves an air of superiority that one cannot acknowledge; and it having been resolved likewise to return again to the old titles, as was also done in a further letter to the said gentleman, to be found among the outgoing letters, and that letter having been delivered by the delegates according to custom; the written report submitted by them concerning their encounter in that regard was presented by the Director, being of the following content: To the Right Noble and Worshipful Lord, Louis Taillefert, Extraordinary Councillor of Netherlands India, and also Director and Commander-in-Chief of this Directorate. Right Noble, Worshipful, Commanding Lord, The undersigned Members of the Political Council, having been delegated by your Right Noble Worship to repair to the English lodge here, in order to hand over there the letter of this Ministry sent yesterday to the head of that Nation, Mr. William Andrew Price, and his Council, we did so while conveying your Right Noble Worship's compliments, whereupon the same was opened and read by Mr. 413 The 17th of December Geelvinck Price in our presence. Having subsequently sat for a short time, the said Chief asked us what reason there was that in the said letter he was only titled Worshipful or Respectable Lord, whereas in the previous one he had been named Honourable or Noble Lord; to which we gave him the answer that this was caused by the fact that their Honours likewise gave no other title to your Right Noble Worship, although your Right Noble Worship, being Director of Bengal, as well as all his predecessors there, had always been written to as Honourable, yet here until now, notwithstanding that in the meantime your Right Noble Worship had become a Member of the High Indian Government at Batavia, only as Worshipful; although we had made this known to their Honours both by letters of the month of March and by our most recent outgoing letter, and in the latter, since their Honours had communicated to us the erection of their factory into a Government, had given Mr. Price the said highest title without hesitation, in the expectation that their Honours would cease giving your Right Noble Worship a lesser one than that which he, for so many reasons as appeared from our previous letter, could expect from the courtesy of the English ministers; but having seen that this had not happened, we considered ourselves justified in giving his Honour again only that of Worshipful; whereupon his Honour answered that neither he nor any of his Council had properly understood that passage concerning your Right Noble Worship's promotion as Councillor of Netherlands India, and that he was unaware of anything from the previous letter of March, but that he assured us that from now on he would not fail, on the occasion that he happened to write to your Right Noble Worship, to give the same the title of Honourable, and that he would very much like to see that it be changed; to which we replied that we would gladly take our letter back with us again and give notice thereof to your Right Noble Worship, provided that his Honour would at the same time assure us that he also wished to change his last one, without letting ourselves into a dispute that Mr. Court, as we 82 633 from
