to satisfy as closely as possible, indeed what could one have wished for more than that everything might have been fulfilled literally in order to convince Mr Blom, to which end one after all takes so much trouble regardless, and at least to remove this objection, just as cannot be unknown to all the members of this assembly who were seated at this table at that time, nor to Mr Blom himself, and furthermore can be evidently shown from the annex already cited earlier under No. 7, whereby expressly for the further refutation of this malicious assertion, the remaining stock on hand at the time of the determined fulfillment of this petition was made known according to its sorts: whether the late Director-General Michiel Westpalm of blessed memory is accused under this, when it is said that they were also dismissed by those of the general directorship etc., or whether it concerns the entire government, as both are indeed apparent, because he adds thereto that this dismissal took place by order of the government; it is certain that there is very much malice but little honor in making use of such openly fabricated accusations in an entirely sinister manner, when one otherwise knows no way to make amends and to pose a second untruth in one and the same breath, like this one: that the unfulfilled bales are the most sought-after on Bantam, in order to decry the conduct either of the late Mr Westpalm or of the entire government in this case all the more: that the latter assertion is now just as untrue as the first can only be seen from the returned goods, also to be found in a separate column in the aforesaid annexes, and from what was sold on Bantam in a full year compared with the specification and consignment from here, for then one will see that of the 26 bales of Bengal gerras sent according to the statement in the report, as many as 15 bales returned, which could not be sold there, notwithstanding that they fetched the highest profits, except for one bale of Coast parcallas, and even 5½ percent more than the fixed profits of 50 percent specified by Mr Blom, so that those may well be counted among the most sought-after, and thus one will find that the Bengal salempores and guinea cloth, common, bleached, which also belong among the most sought-after goods for sale among the natives and of which the latter here even at public auction sometimes fetched profits of up to 100 percent, were completely satisfied according to the specification of Mr Blom, but that of the former instead of 18 bales nothing could be sold on Bantam and thus the 4 unused bales had to be supplied to the garrison, and furthermore that of the latter, instead of six bales proposed by Mr Blom, only one piece is found accounted for in the return; so that all the pretexts with which His Honour seeks to cover his chimerical propositions, and the pretexts upon which he seeks to blame the unfortunate outcome, must soon collapse when one examines the essence of the matter and unmasks the arguments presented. One shall not dwell further on this section because it is vexatious and offensive that an entire body must go and vindicate itself against open untruths with which it is accused by a single member, and there is not the slightest doubt that the Right Honourable Masters will well understand the injustice that is done to the body of this government in this entire affair; Yet, however much of a disgust and aversion one already has for so many capital errors and false propositions as have already been brought forward in this respect to the charge of that advisory opinion, one must nevertheless continue a little further on that footing so as not to leave untouched the two remaining insinuations, which weigh quite as heavily, and also not leave anything in this fine advisory opinion that could mislead the Right Honourable Masters, without evidently demonstrating its absurdity and, where necessary, also its malice and falsehood: here then, Article 9. The fourth insinuation: "If it now please Your Right Honours to accept that assertion of the officials on Bantam concerning the doits as current truth, that, alongside many other matters, indisputably depends on the arbitrary discretion of Your Right Honours." This adjacent passage in repetition concerning the issue of the copper doits was answered earlier in this document under Article 4, and therefore a further reply is presently excused. As if one were accustomed to govern according to caprices and arbitrary discretion, and just to accept bare assertions from the officials without investigating what is best for the service of the Company and wherein its essential advantage or disadvantage lies; one might well ask what Mr Blom—of whose caprices and obstinacy in standing by his drafts with or without reason there are already so many proofs, and at the end of this treatise a remarkable sample will yet be disclosed—intends to denote with this expression and particularly with that of "many other matters", but then one would again have to place oneself on an equal footing with a man who in that respect is already so well known, and of whose singular sentiments the resolutions of this table have for many years already provided so many proofs; and therefore one shall leave Mr Blom in

Now one comes to the resin wherein the fifth is enclosed, being properly the one that the writer of Bantam had his eye upon, when declaring his thoughts concerning the advice that is now coming to an end, and is thus no less remarkable in the latter than in the former. Article 10. To rewrite this adjacent section of the Lord van Imhoff concerning the resin by way of repetition would likewise be an unnecessary labor, seeing that such has already been committed to paper forward by the undersigned under Article 5, and it should therefore be left to rest there, subject to the highly wise interpretations of Your Honorable, Esteemed, and further Lord Principals. For Lord Blom is not ashamed to fabricate an entire history and bring it onto the field in a thoroughly vile manner, in order once again to present himself as someone who is uncommonly thwarted and contradicted, and who must always lose the case, however much right he has on his side. Thus run the words, which are too fine and too remarkable not to be inserted here: but meanwhile an incident has occurred that could not well have been foreseen, and is also not equally easy for everyone to understand, namely that on the day of the resumption of the oft-mentioned report, in the Council of India in Batavia, the price of the resin fell from 12 to 8 schellingen per picol; likewise, on the contrary, the Bantam price around that time, according to the statement of the servants in their letters, although over there is very little vent for its use, in less than a span of one and a half months, rose from 6 to 8 schellingen per picol, whereby then also said good intention of the undersigned was entirely and completely brought to ruin. The mysterious and obscure passage wherewith the late Lord Director-General Michiel Westpalm, who made the purchase of the aforementioned resin, seems most of all meant and accused of underhanded dealings and indirect conduct in that matter, solely to put a spoke in the wheel of that good man who has such good intentions for the Company, and to make his proposal on this subject fail, must necessarily be examined somewhat more closely, because the writer of this advice, to all appearances, imagines that he has expressed this fine insinuation very neatly and veiled through an incident that was not well to be foreseen, and is also not equally easy for everyone to understand. Yet everyone who knew the aforementioned late Lord Director-General Westpalm knows with how much integrity and sincerity he proceeded in everything, and these will therefore also be best able to judge whether he was capable of taking such an indirect path to wrong another, and through things that are not equally easy for everyone to understand, to cause the price of the resin at Bantam to rise and at Batavia to fall. This is what Lord Blom charges that energetic man, whose good zeal and faithful services to the Company will to all appearances long remain in a sweet savor, in a thoroughly shameless and no less untruthful manner, as shall now be briefly shown. For firstly, it is untruthful that the price of the resin at Batavia, as Lord Blom says, was for a long time consecutively at 14 schellingen the picol, and just before the beginning of this year fell to 12 schellingen. In March 1730, that resin was also purchased for 12 schellingen, and between the two there were only four purchases of 13 schellingen, and not one of 14, instead of a long time consecutively; then again of 12 schellingen throughout the entire year 1733, and not, as Lord Blom says, just before the beginning of this year. Untruthful and maliciously fabricated it is also that the price on the day of the resumption of his report, through an incident that was not well to be foreseen, or not equally easy for everyone to understand, was supposed to have fallen to 8 schellingen. For everyone who is not so preoccupied as Lord Blom will well be able to understand that no other mystery operated under this than that the late Lord Director, seeing with what evil intent, in order to rub a blemish onto the purchase at Batavia, this Bantam profit or retrenchment item had been brought forward, may at that time have bargained somewhat more closely, and perhaps a bit too closely, wherefore after his death one also had to give some increase again, which indeed is not difficult to understand, except for such as are accustomed to make use of such sinister tricks and improper ways, and who therefore as easily think evil of others as they themselves can be brought to it. Untruthful it is also that this price fell precisely upon the reading of the report, just as if it were something unheard of to buy resin for 8 schellingen at Batavia; for from the submitted summary of 30 years long it will be able to appear that from the year 1715 up to the present day the price has from time to time risen and fallen, certainly according to the supply from Palembang and other places, perhaps also from Bantam itself, which indeed is also very easy to understand, and in which intervening time the picol repeatedly was no more than 8 to 9 schellingen.

as well as in the year 1712, when it was worth 15 schellingen, and around February 1715 even 18 schellingen, as proof that one must pretend to be uncommonly ignorant or effectively want to be unable to understand that pitch can be purchased sometimes a bit higher and sometimes a bit lower, and that among other things it can also, without any surprise or circumstance that could not well be foreseen, fall at this place to 8 schellingen per picol. And truly it is furthermore untrue and very malicious to have inserted here that pitch would have been purchased so cheaply only during the reading of that famous report, that this Batavian price did not last long, and that after that time another 673 picols were bought in at this Castle at 10 schellingen per picol; whereas it can fully appear from the repeatedly cited annex No. 10 that not only during the reading of that report, or in March anno passato, 540 picols, but also twice thereafter, namely in June 492 and in August 500 picols had been bought in at that same price of 8 schellingen. Which two purchases, however, were just as well concealed by Mr. Blom in his advice as they are not found in the submitted defective extract from the cash books, as proof of the reliance one can place upon the assertions of that man, and of what detours he does not employ at the expense of truth itself, merely to be and remain in the right, if possible. Now, as concerns the rise at Bantam to 8 schellingen per picol, one will not dwell long upon that, because the passage found in that regard in the general letter of the servants of 26 May anno passado, and the referral described therein to this main station to deliver the offered quantity there and negotiate the price, is fully sufficient immediately to remove all ill thoughts that Mr. Blom wants to impress upon the reader of his advice through those enigmatic expressions, and thus one will also merely abide by that to make an end to these remarks. Article 11. Now one fairly asks which of the two has been injured in office and honor: the government, to which, according to the foregoing demonstration, so many untrue, false, and fabricated insinuations have been imputed, or Mr. Blom, who uses this expression concerning himself at the beginning of his advice because in the Bantam matter his wretched notions were brought to light and their error simply shown from the success of all the proposed undertakings. The decision is easy to make, and then nothing remains but to ask whether this may simply happen so freely and with impunity, and what reparation such an eminent body as that of this government must have in order to be restored completely to its integrity in that regard; which the Most Noble lords principals will in due time possibly decide and answer. Article 11. This adjacent question of Mr. van Imhoff, namely which of the two has been injured in office and honor, can, under the favorable pleasure of Your Honorable Lordships, subsequently be answered in the required order in the next and final article, along with a number of other matters. Article 12. Yet Mr. Blom will say: I do not include the debating of my wretched propositions concerning the pepper delivery, the sale of textiles, the disbursement of doit coins, and the purchase of pitch under it when I sustain that I have been greatly injured in office and honor by the matter, but rather the accusation that I had not acquitted myself well in my commission, and among others specifically also the article of the Bantam queen. It is very notable that nothing is found in the entire advice concerning this bad entry, and consequently also nothing that could serve as an excuse, notwithstanding that this passage in the Bantam matter is so energetic and speaks of things that effectively touch office and honor, as proof that one must not know much to bring against it; but Mr. Blom possibly [illegible] to certain just and well-merited reproaches regarding his conduct held at Bantam, after the reading of this advice in this meeting. Article 12. The answering of the adjacent prolix general description, dictated until the end of this writing, which distinct matters, in order to be understood in their true nature as required, will conveniently need to be divided under 2 separate points and thus replied to; regarding which the following then comes into consideration: First, regarding the utterly unfounded wonder of Mr. van Imhoff that the undersigned did not speak in his written advice of the matter written by His Honour in the repeatedly mentioned Bantam matter concerning the difficulties over the stay of Queen Ratoe Sarief at Bantam; and also that after the reading of the often-mentioned advice in the Council of India, in proof of what was noted therein, there was first produced a quite ample register with the annexes belonging thereto, of which the register had come over as

But this is an absolute truth, that the undersigned specifically never had any other order than to make known to the King at a suitable occasion, face-to-face in secrecy, the grievances of this Government regarding the stay of the well-mentioned Queen Ratoe Sarief in or at the Bantam court, yet under this condition, that in case the undersigned after his arrival from Batavia in Bantam should find her residing there in that case. Indeed, even now some gentlemen are pleased in public writings to wish to maintain against reason and equity, and therefore it also finally seems necessary that the aforementioned orders be produced, since particular interpretations or discourses in the case subject to the principal matter, according to the contentions of the undersigned, do not merit the slightest reflection. As far as the extracts are concerned, on the assumption that all the assertions made known by the Bantam commander of that time, Iulius Valentijn Stein van Gollenesse, in his successive separate letters addressed to this government, would be found to consist of pure and unadulterated truths, and on that basis it was at that time also maintained by the undersigned that the departure of that princess from Bantam was necessary, namely if the King, after a secret face-to-face talk, could easily be induced to agree to this; someone would have to be utterly deprived of sound judgment if, in reading through the secret resolution of 4 August 1733, he does not immediately discover that one is not at all satisfied with the person spoken of, being the person in question, for reasons alleged therein; that one would indeed wish to make use of it, but that because of the considerations adduced one sees no way forward yet; that one therefore wished that the King himself would dismiss her without further hearing, and that the Commissioner should encourage His Highness to that end, as well as provide the required report of his findings so that further orders could be given according to the circumstances of the time; for wanting to rob a king of his consort against his will and inclination, and that on the basis of private discussions held within this government without the least specific written order, is something that, in the case of the executor, could by all impartial minds be recognized and regarded as nothing other than the greatest imprudence in the world, on account of the grave consequences that would notoriously arise from it, of which the preliminaries would never bring about anything other than mutual hostilities between those of the Company and the King, and those discords would never subsequently be decided except by means of an open war between the Company and the King, at the mutual expense of blood and treasures, in order through such onerous paths and costly means to bring matters back to their present advantageous state, both for the Company and the realm of Bantam, regarding which an ample description has already been given earlier under Article 1 by the undersigned, to which the same will therefore respectfully refer for the rest; to say nothing of what occurred during the taking of the aforesaid resolution in full assembly, which will still be fresh in the memory of many of the present members, when Mr. Blom, who now clings to such a fine denial, on the contrary unhesitatingly and with the usual thoughtlessness boasted that he would soon get that woman into his power, despite the fact that this project was not presented to him as so easy, but on the contrary the difficulties residing therein, both with respect to the said Queen and her faction, were faithfully pointed out to him by those who had knowledge and awareness thereof. to cease citing all such passages from which the falsehood of the present assertion can be manifestly deduced, one needs nothing other than what Mr. Blom himself admits in his report concerning that letter, when he says: in all those aforementioned sentiments (understand this: that the execution of our order in her regard was not necessary) I remained until the receipt of the letter of the date 14 December last, in which I find Your High Nobilities, for reasons that are not yet too well known to me, continuing in their previous sentiment to describe the state and truth of the Bantam court, its lands, and subjects, as if everything there, through the malicious government and violent treatments of the king, both regarding the royal family and his further subjects in Bantam as well as Lampong, had been brought into the greatest confusion, and just as if thereby the pepper deliveries to the Company, both from the Bantam lands and those of Lampong, were completely lost, etc., such being known, among all others, under the secret resolution of 4 August; item to persist therein in the demotion of the said princess from the court of Bantam. How then can one now deny without any shame that there was no qualification to must or may accept that woman into the Company's protection? If one insists on the exact words, and if one must spoon-feed everything word for word to such a commissioner, then he seems to be right; but does the greater not imply the lesser, and does it not speak for itself that, while attributing everything for the most part to the ambitious humor and bad conduct of the aforementioned Queen Ratoe Sarief, indeed even on the foundation of all those maliciously made statements by His Honor, he tries to transfer this to the account of the undersigned, even seeking to magnify this as a matter of whose consequences a further accounting should be given in due time, since in the said and enormous pretenses that princess had not dispatched from Bantam to Batavia, if someone is recommended to effect the demotion or expulsion, he may at least let no occasion pass when he can obtain that subject himself without any trouble; so it is and remains true that Mr. Blom conducted himself in a wholly unaccountable manner in all of this, and that he is the cause of all the inconveniences that might be caused by the stay of this princess, both for the state of the Company at this place and at Bantam. service of the Company, and to answer in writing and very fully the following questions: firstly, whether the Queen, since his presence, had by her conduct deserved to be removed from Bantam; secondly, whether her remaining at Bantam was also harmful; thirdly, whether it was advisable to carry out our order regarding the Sultan concerning her; and fourthly, whether there was any likelihood that the Sultan could be persuaded to remove his aforementioned wife from the court, or from Bantam, according to the express desire of this government. At the same time, consisting of notorious untruths known to everyone in Bantam and Batavia, are all the assertions that his Honour has been pleased to make in his aforementioned writings to the charge of the above-mentioned Queen Ratoesarief, just as if she, as previously stated, were a princess of very bad conduct in and around the court, towards the court grandees and subjects, and also that she formally held mastery over the King her consort, and thereby knew how to bring about and execute all evil matters, execute and carry out according to her pleasure, and the like. Where it is also of singular remark that by Mr van Imhoff, among all the descriptions which he has made in the past spring and autumn and at present to the charge of the aforementioned princess, not a single special point is found alleged anywhere from which could be deduced and confirmed wherein the frequently mentioned princess had exceeded her bounds. For to merely fight, as it were, in the air with one's own fantasies, perhaps based on erroneous private reports from malicious people, and thereby without the least appearance or proof of truth to want to make such a princess suspected by Your Honourable and High Respectable Council; not only to say that she is a princess of an ambitious, greedy, and malicious disposition towards those of the court and subjects of the realm, that is not enough, but it requires formal proof, which will never be found. to know and to do, not the least thing was undertaken that could serve to comply with the aforesaid order, until the day of his departure, when it was indeed ridiculous to go and converse with the sultan about such matters which ought to have been suggested to him four or five months earlier; yes, when such a fine execution could do nothing but harm, both with regard to the king, in whose eyes it surely must have been laughable to hear a man speak in such a manner, who three days earlier had had the finest opportunity in the world to do that which he now wanted the king to do, and who, on the contrary, had even been a mediator and had done his best to keep that woman in Bantam and to reconcile him with her again; as well as with respect to Ratoe Sarif or the queen herself, who, now having been reconciled with her husband through the good offices of the Lord Commissioner and thus also restored to her full credit, will certainly have been vexed by this passage, and will not have been able to hear with good grace that she stood in such bad standing here with the government, whereby nothing but bitterness and resentment could be aroused in the mind of a woman as ambitious as she, since one may well assume that the king will have communicated everything to her that had been proposed to him concerning her person. Which declarations then seemed completely strange to the undersigned, as running entirely counter and contrary to his intention, which tended to nothing other than to reassure this government through their advice, by declaring nothing else than all that which they had generally heard from others during their presence in Bantam regarding the said Princess her conduct, and had even experienced in person both at court and in the fortress Speelwijk. Which by the undersigned, after taking reading of that fine report, was presented to them by word of mouth, though without success, which aroused strange misgivings regarding those people in the undersigned; who in addition recalled the speculative behavior of those people for some time previously, and pondering such against and with various fabricated malicious rumors that, in the case of the commission in Batavia, were divulged by a bunch of shameless street rabble along stoops and benches during the absence of the undersigned in Batavia, allegedly from private news that had arrived from Bantam, thus at that time aroused, as mentioned, quite strange misgivings in him regarding the behavior of the said three people, and it was understood that above all this, by virtue of yet various other preceding circumstances, there was not much to boast of or rely upon regarding their conduct and candor with respect to their master's service; which, upon the return of the undersigned to Batavia, was also somewhat more closely discovered, among all can be shown in some measure as by a small sample, namely from the revelation of a secret, mentioned in the adjoining writing of Mr. van Imhoff, which belonged to no one else's knowledge than to theirs and the undersigned, who was also not bound to give an account to this government of his impertinent encounters regarding those people, as having not the least relation to Your Honors' orders, and for that reason alone has left the said advice and enclosures outside of the commissarial papers, which the undersigned trusts will be held as satisfactory by Your Right Honorable Worships, and whereas for the rest Mr. van Imhoff posits very near to the end of his much-mentioned writing, as it were, this question, namely whether the undersigned, according to his assertion, has been injured or not, after His Honor had previously shown himself aggrieved regarding 6 points, whereby the government would have been insidiously attacked through the contents of the advice of the undersigned, according to the thoughts of His aforementioned Honor; such as: Firstly, because he had described the Lampong false news under the title of street gossip in his advice; A second, because he continues to advocate the sale of textiles on the Company's behalf in Bantam, against the sentiment of the government; Thirdly, that he is said to have maliciously made known that poor sale of textiles in Batavia in the latest five years, on false grounds; A fourth, that he continues to advocate the disbursement of copper duiten in Bantam; Fifthly, that he has advocated the purchase of native pitch in Bantam, and explained how it truly went with its purchase in Batavia in the year 1734; Sixthly, that he is said not to have acquitted himself well in his commission, namely in the matter that he had not caused the Queen Ratoe Sarief, according to the wish of the government, to be dispatched to Batavia; and The seventh, that he is said to have withheld from the government from his commissarial papers the written advice that he had required from the Bantam Commander van Gollonesse, the Senior Merchant Lambert van Gessel, and Merchant van Wognum, continuing upon the said Princess her conduct. The time is currently far too short to have extracts collected from the said resolutions and to submit herewith the passages of which Mr. van Imhoff pleases to speak, since amidst the daily service of the undersigned, only an interval of 8 days has been left, both to compose these rescripts and to have them copied with their additions and dependencies, and therefore the undersigned, with deep respect, requests his excuse for the present from Your Right Honorables. And at the same time that he for the present may suffice with briefly noting down here from his memory which points they essentially are that Mr. van Imhoff Imhoff has pleased to take as the foundation for the injuries which he has sought to impute to the undersigned, in office and honor, by the compendium of the aforementioned nine articles, which all originate from the contents of the said successive resolutions, initially in the year 1729, or shortly after that well-known praiseworthy election of Mr. Durven as Governor-General. Since which time until today, both within the government and outside of it, all confusions confusions and wretched treatments have had their beginning and principal continuation, up to this day, particularly in Batavia, where at present almost all capital matters and their treatment, taken in their coherence, begin to look more and more like an absolute chaos, which in the continuation of this will, in passing, be somewhat further gathered. Yet to remain for now with the aforementioned intended text, Your Right Honorables may please to know that the undersigned, according to the opinion of Mr. van Imhoff, is of such unfortunate, poor capacities and sentiments in his master's service as specified above, which then principally, according to that assertion, would have to consist in the following: First, because, as is known in the Netherlands, in anno 1729, for his share alone in the government, he could not agree that that on Cormandel the Mughal was to be made war upon on the Company's behalf, in order to prevent the ruin to which trade throughout the entire Mughal empire would otherwise indisputably be subject, from which sentiment all the impertinences that have since successively been inflicted upon the undersigned in the government, more or less, have obtained their essential and fundamental origin.
