Two days thereafter, to the sardar Thamas Beeq, report and speculation on 13 March, where Mirza Taggie, Elmomaleek, and vizier, and furthermore delivered his report in council on 5 July, having then on the question of the King's arrival plainly said, first 20 loads—usually understood as a burden for donkeys as well as other animals—prudence served that they should be sent to him for that purpose. Meanwhile, everyone looked out and longed for veritable news of the confirmation by the Turkish emperor of the peace treaty concluded at Bagdaat, conditionally struck between the pasha of that city on the one hand and the aforementioned Thamas Chan on the other, until one was informed in that same missive from the residents—although credible tidings thereof had already been obtained locally before—to their grievous sorrow, that instead of its ratification, a new war had been declared, the Turk being willing to ally himself with Sja Thamas, but by no means with the usurper. The latter also seems to have had little care in the matter, seeing that upon that warning, after having sent and escorted his family and greatest wealth to his village Gorassan, he peacefully departed again with 70,000 cavalry and 10,000 foot soldiers (as mentioned casually above) on the 14th of the aforementioned month of June from that royal stable, in order to attack the Ottomans and, if possible, make himself master of Constantinopolen. As a result, everyone now finds themselves once again in the greatest embarrassment, both in the upper and lower lands, and no less around Bassoura. Because of the poor prospects for the rightful king to the throne, people are even frustrated in wishing well to either of the contending parties, since the Turk, triumphing over Thamas Chan, will not only seek to obtain compensation for his suffered damages but moreover will put everything to the sword; and if the other enjoys that fortune, no one can expect anything good from one insatiable in thirst for wealth and blood. However it may go, money there must be, and his extraordinary memory serves to everyone's detriment, forgetting nothing in the world of what he has once ordered in that regard. Thus Your High Excellencies will find very movingly noted in the Spahan daily journal under the dates 23 and 30 October; 17, 22, 25, 26, 27, 29, and 30 November; 1, 4, 6, 8, 12, 14, 16, 17, 23, 26, 27, and 31 December of the past year; as well as 10 and 18 January; 12, 13, 27, 30, and 31 March; 2, 8, 20, and 30 April; 7 May; and 15 June of this year, to which we most obediently refer, subject to Your High Excellencies' favorable interpretation. Humbly continuing the report regarding Spahan, we dutifully submit to Your High Excellencies that since our accompanying humble last letter of the ultimate of September, concerning the outstanding claims and meager household effects of the merchant and former chief Nicolaus Schorer, nothing has occurred or been received, and therefore that state of affairs continues as before. During the laytime of the cited vessel there, two Bugis, named Samaal batavia and haros batoeakan, who were inclined to desertion and had already run away, were recovered after efforts made, on condition of leaving them unpunished for that deed. The first-named died in loco not long thereafter, while the other now sails over with the said ship, and for both those fugitives, or rather to their deliverers, 100 white shahis or ƒ42: 10. — was given as a recognition fee. Likewise, in passing the same, for the reason alleged by the ministers in the missive of 26 May concerning these rascals, it was also thought best to let them be exempted from undergoing any punishment. In the year 1724, the residents, having been presented by the then pasha abdul rheman with a red stallion valued at ƒ127. 10. —, which died of old age on 3 December of the past year, requested permission to write it off to the profit and loss account and to purchase another in its place. Whereupon, deliberating on this and seeing that this could be imputed to no one, nor could the purchase of another mount be managed without incurring comment, permission was granted to them for the writing off and the said purchase, as well as to sell, for the highest possible price, another ditto standing in the stable, now 17 years old, obtained as aforesaid in the year 1725 and then valued at ƒ425. —. —, and in its stead, observing the most necessary frugality, likewise to purchase one. In that same letter, those residents likewise mention that on the 10th of the said month of May, a new deputy governor arrived at the said place on behalf of the Baghdad pasha, and, having been ordered by him with secret orders to dispatch the previous ditto named Jbrahim Caja from this world by the cord after having deposed him from his office and demanded an accounting, this was nevertheless discovered by the common people. He was forcefully rescued when it was about to be carried out and brought from the prison to the captain pasha for his safety. The new deputy governor, dismayed over the affair and afraid of being attacked by the rabble, attempted to flee and broke a leg twice in jumping over a wall, it being supposed by the ministers that the factions arisen from this could well bring about riots and detriment. It is nevertheless a pleasant matter that the ministers have not been given cause for complaint by this or other incidents, since they enjoy the purchased privileges etc. with an affable intercourse with those regents, and therefore it may well be assumed that no disadvantageous change or infraction will occur therein. All the more do we flatter ourselves with that good hope, because the necessary measures, according to Your High Excellencies' venerated order, at the time of the departure of our humble homeland submission letters of 6 February and the ministers' accompanying dittos dated the ultimate of April thereafter, have been humbly imparted to His Excellency the ambassador Cornelis Calkoen, as we hope, to exert his power, having been urged, and having the intention to cultivate that correspondence on all occasions. It is evident that these troublesome times have done no good for the French either, as the Four Sisters, one of their private small vessels carrying a supercargo named Mr. St. Hilaire, also experienced; since after its arrival in [illegible] on the 4th of July, he, seeing he could not succeed here, set course on the 5th of August for Basra. However, some of the merchants trading to that and other places diverted him from that voyage, struck an agreement, and returned with it to this roadstead. Cornelis Adriaanisse of Amsterdam, sailor, for wanton insolence committed against his commanding officer, and sentenced on the 14th of the same month to be riveted in chains and to labor on the public works at Batavia or elsewhere for 10 years, furthermore half of his wages for the Honorable Company and the other half or further possessions for the fiscal, with expenses, executed on the 18th of August aforementioned. Jan van Steenderen of The Hague, sailor, for violent theft by breaking into the ship's hold of the Barbesteijn to steal the Company's copper pipes, apprehended and detained on the 13th of August, whereupon he was condemned on the 14th of this month to be punished with death by hanging and his corpse dealt with according to the custom here, with confiscation of his goods and credited monthly wages for the indemnification of the Honorable Company as far as possible, and further in the costs and expenses of justice, executed on the 18th of the same month following. Jan in de Betou of Rotterdam, sailor, as accomplice and receiver of the aforementioned theft, detained on the 18th of August, was likewise sentenced on the 14th of this month to be dropped twice from the main yardarm and severely flogged, as well as a fine of [illegible] months' wages for the benefit of the Honorable Company, and further in the costs and expenses of justice, executed on the 18th thereafter. Besoep of Batavia, Bugis soldier, for theft committed with violence in the chest of his own sergeant, arrested on the 25th of August, and condemned on the 14th as above to corporal punishment with branding and 10 years riveted in chains to be employed in the public works at Batavia or elsewhere, further the confiscation of his goods in favor of the victim of the theft, and in the costs and expenses of the court, executed on the 18th of the same month as before. Dirk van der Linde, cook, Frans Pietersz., sailor, Pieter Jansz. de Raad, ditto, and Claas van Bodegraven, ditto, for illicit and unpermitted gambling by night on the ship Barbesteijn, prosecuted by the fiscal here and just now condemned to be severely flogged before the main mast, except Dirk van der Linde in view of the fact that he is infirm, with forfeiture of 3 months' wages by the sailor Frans Pieters because he had acted as banker, and the other 3 each of 2 months, as well as forfeiture of the gambled money, according to their own statements to be verified in the court documents at No. 3: 36 rupees by the one and 10 by the other, or together 46 rupees, for the benefit of the deaconry poor at Batavia.
