Valko then the forward-coming 5443 received under obligation both the duplicate of the reply just given and the further enclosed letters; we thank most respectfully, not only for Your Honors gracious notice regarding the parish of the Companys ships Valkenisse, and Noordwijkerhout, but also for all the rest communicated therewith, and in particular for the copy of the most revered letters from Her Right Honorable severe, high and mighty authorities transmitted by those ships to Your Honors, from which we shall let that which pertains to this residency serve as a salutary guideline for us. On the other hand, we have noted with particular pleasure that your Honors had made an intention for the dispatch of the ship Noordwijkserhout with a solid cargo hither; which we wholeheartedly hope will have already taken effect by the appearance of this, since the Pasha seems greatly inclined toward a peace with the desert Arabs, with whom he has lived in continuous dissension practically from the beginning of his reign, showing himself so persecuting and vindictive that, after confiscating all his movable and immovable goods to the amount, so it is said, of 3500 purses at 22½ thom:s each, or in total 78750:- thomans, he had the very wealthy and well-known Sheikh Annes strangled; which compelled the likewise renowned Sheikh Mhamed Mana, out of fear that something similar might happen to him, to reside among his nation in the deserts, and there, as well as hereabouts, to inflict so much damage by all kinds of robbery and raids by way of revenge, until the Pasha was finally resolved to dispatch against him all his ready and newly recruited forces, consisting of about 6000 men, both cavalry and infantry, under the command of his own Kahya or second-in-command, alongside the Janissary Aghassi, who on the 20th of March last marched in divided troops toward the encampment of the aforementioned Sheikh Mhamed Mana, which was near the village named Tesahur, situated close to the river Euphrates, and after constructing some so-called entrenchments, after a lapse of three or four days, fought a brave battle, wherein the great, but not bold, Turks suffered a total defeat, and the Arabs gained a complete victory and possession of the battlefield, with about 5000 men having fallen on the spot on the side of the former, and of the latter possibly barely a fifth; so that the few remaining Janissaries and Pasha's musketeers returned practically naked, bare, and stripped of their weapons, together with the small remnant of cavalry without horses, also leaving behind both their aforementioned army commanders, and furthermore all their tents, ammunition, and further baggage: wherefore this city at present is so stripped of garrison and war materiel that the burghers, assisted by the other resident foreigners such as Armenians, Banians, Jews, and others, must guard the gates and walls: and notwithstanding this, the Arabs, in case they had directed their aim at this city, could take it at any time at their own desire without encountering the least resistance, since the dejection among these peoples has now produced such an impression of fear on their minds that the name of Arabs alone could compel them to flee and make way; at the beginning, or after the return of this defeated and entirely ruined troop, the Pasha seemed to want to exercise a stubborn revenge for this, but perceiving his power to be too small and the Arabs' valor too formidable, it appears as if he, as it were at the instigation of the most wealthy merchants and other townsmen, will finally allow himself to be persuaded [illegible]

5455 5449 -. 100 s Vallo than the aforementioned 144 moved to an accommodation and a firm peace, in order thereby to allow his subjects to enjoy a pleasant tranquility and the merchants a flourishing trade; which may God soon bring about in that irritable and self-seeking mind, so that commerce, so long impaired by those troubles and almost completely dead, may now attain that success which the appearances before the start of the said disputes, or to speak truly, the arrival of the Pasha, seemed to us so salutary and advantageous; yes, even to such an extent that everyone imagined there would not be enough merchandise found in Bassora to spend all the expected cash upon; but that this fortune has so turned, and merchants have stayed away, we must console ourselves along with all other merchants in the hope that the outcome will let us reap somewhat more favorable fruits from this approaching step. As regards that with the Persian, not the least certain report is heard thereof, and it is hardly mentioned any more, other than that a new rumor is now spreading, as if Thamas Coeli Chan were killed in a battle against the Turks, which according to our humble thoughts were well to be wished, so that at last through the death of that mercenary and bellicose nature, the completely ruined and calamitous condition of lands and peoples might attain a refreshing breathing space and restoration of the so long languishing bride trade, in which so many, but especially the Honorable Company and we, Their Honors' humble servants, have such a heartfelt interest. But that lord Pasha, to his own shame, had to withdraw his hand from that unreasonable conduct, as the Consul of that nation, Mr. Marten Frensch, upon that strict notice, de facto requested the supercargoes and captains of those mentioned vessels to proceed on board and make their ships ready to sail, assuring them at the same time that he would follow in person with his people that very same evening, in case that dispute was not settled according to his desire before sunset; which indeed essentially happened, as the aforesaid Consul not only returned from the Pasha with robes of honor, but moreover acquired a firman confirming the previous custom of 3 percent toll on their goods to be imported. 5455 5449 remained in the broker's hands, nor in the Company's treasury, other than the small amount shown above, which I, after the news of the death of Mr. Heij, gathered in with all caution: although that did not have to be the reason that I did not send the trade books of this office off in due time, as they had always been lying ready with their annexes long beforehand, as has already been said: For I can declare before God upon my conscience, and calmly swear, that I had no suspicion, much less any evidence or foreknowledge of all this secret trade or of the broker's inability; but there was no other secure opportunity than solely that with the aforementioned Captain Robberts, and I hope that this delay will already have found its excuse with your Honors for the reasons stated above. Therefore, in my humble opinion, the book and account of our old pious broker [illegible] and the testimony of the creditors, together with the further proofs, or handwritten testimonies of the creditors, which are sent herewith under No. 14 in a sheet with their translations, will find full admittance and credence with Your Honours, the more so because Your Honours are also fully aware of the man's honesty and good nature. Your Honour will undoubtedly have already discerned what amount of the vacated estate of the Honourable Mr. Heijs with its appurtenances and dependencies will, after accounts pro and contra are settled, clearly come to enjoy. In all my anxiety and oppression of mind, it has still afforded me singular satisfaction that the executorship thereof has been assigned to the Honourable Commander Rochad, together with Mr. Heijnitsz, wherefore I still nurture great hope that I, through their equitable actions, assisted by Your Honours' noble protection, shall be delivered from my sweating anguish; especially if the old broker, and consequently I myself with regard to the Honourable Company, may in all reason be granted the right of preference upon the estate in every case, toward which would then principally contribute the deceased gentleman's monies at the Orphan Chamber of Batavia, if not mistaken, still standing there, together with his pay accounts, auction proceeds, and whatever else. This being prepared this far for dispatch, it is heard that the commissioners sent out on the 27th of the last past month of April regarding the matters concerning the peace between the Turks and Arabs are expected to arrive tomorrow or the day after tomorrow with the peace contracts, in order to be ratified by mutual sealings, truly to the utmost joy of every resident of this city, though not to the best satisfaction of the Pasha, because the party outside, as is learned, has prefaced some conditions, the granting of which must turn out much more to the disgrace than honor of him, the Pasha; since he started his dispute like a roaring lion and now comes to end the same like a bleating sheep: yet God be praised that the harmful consequences of both those extremities have thereby come to cease, and now afford us hope for a wished-for success in matters concerning trade. The English private ship the Carolina, or its captain Abraham Robbartsz, to our singular obligation, safely delivered to us on the 27th of July last Your Honors' duplicate secret missive dated the 19th of April prior, accompanied by a general one dated the 10th of June thereafter, with such enclosures as its register indicated. The original of the first-mentioned was likewise delivered to us a few days later by another English opportunity via Bassaidoor, from which it was revealed to our particular joy that Your Honors had been pleased to regard the matters concerning the deceased Chief Dames Hey, of blessed memory—made known in a private missive by the first undersigned of this letter to the present Honorable Chief Koenad—as relating to the Company's interests, and also to uphold them as such. This wise decision was the desired outcome in an affair in which the Honorable Company was not only substantially interested, but had itself even been subject to great danger of a formidable blow to its precious respect. We are gratefully obliged to Your Honors for the precaution used in arresting the two Banians Natta and Wissendas as substantial partners of the broker Moeltjant, and we would have followed that example here with respect to the last-mentioned upon Your Honors' highly esteemed order, were it not that a multitude of compelling reasons had restrained us from doing so. First, considering the non-despotic power we possess here to arrest anyone who, through a confluence of debts, virtually had to be regarded in this case as a hostage at the disposal of his creditors; secondly, we could have run the risk of ourselves suffering something disadvantageous from the side of the rulers, as we, just like all other inhabitants here, are in fact considered nothing other than fellow dependents of their grotesque government, and on that account unauthorized to execute anything of an authoritative nature; besides which we would undoubtedly have had to interpose ourselves as guarantors for the outstanding or due debts to the amount of 103,000 thomans, because by so doing we would have assumed full disposal over the debtor and thereby postponed the creditors; and furthermore, here in our dwelling, with such a person and his entire family—who, being inseparable from him, would also have had to be accommodated here—we would have had to endure an unspeakable nuisance and continual lamentations.
