From Persia under date 30 9ber: 1733 that he will regain the crown, which God grant, but for my part I can hardly believe such a thing; in the meantime, nothing certain has been heard since the departure of the current ruler from here, which was on the date 20 8ber:, but now it is said that near Shushtar he has his hands full against the Arabs and Bakhtiari Lors, who, it is assured, are joined with one another with a firm resolution to resist him to the last man; and in these days some artillery and other ammunition of war have been sent to him from here by his order, while it is also said that many of his troops, both men and beasts, have perished from the cold. Further Extract Whereas two to three days ago from the other side I learned to my great astonishment that some horsemen have been ordered thither by the present ruler with orders to attempt to capture the English agent and Your Honour, I therefore consider it my duty to make this known to Your Honour so that the nets of this barbarian may be escaped in every way, for it would cause me nothing but mortal grief if something dreadful should happen to Your Honour, which God mercifully forbid. Honourable, Valiant, Wise, Prudent Sir and Respected Sirs, Since up to the present date we have not had the fortune to learn that our humble last letter of 21 xber: of the past year has been delivered to Your Honour, and now the small English vessel, the grab Success, is departing thither, we cannot, by duty bound, fail to direct this to Your Honour in all submission and also to send the copy of our aforementioned submissive letter, to which we kindly request you may refer. Before speaking of other matters, we must in all humility inform Your Honour that whereas the junior merchant and co-signatory of this letter has not had a healthy hour during his two-year presence at this place, and fearing that with the approaching cold season, humanly speaking, if he must remain without any medical aid, he will, if not lose his life, at least become incurable from a paralysis from which he suffers, and with other ailments contracted during his 16-year stay in the Persian directorship finds himself quite miserable; he has now resolved, after having previously presented his debilitated bodily condition to the first undersigned of this letter, and having made him consider and reflect in all conscience that no recovery could be hoped for here on the one hand due to lack of medicines and physicians, and on the other hand the extremely piercing climate entirely contrary to his nature, to request permission to make a voyage to your parts with the aforementioned English vessel, in order to seek his recovery through the help of physicians or else the mineral water of Ganjav. We have therefore taken this into mature consideration, reflecting that in our opinion there is no person who, seeing him beside us on crutches and lying flat in bed without the advice or aid of doctors, would not sigh or feel compassion for him; moreover, trusting in Your Honour's gracious mercy upon his own appearance there, in case death does not prevent it, under Your Honour's highly esteemed goodwill, we not only wish to join our request with his for obtaining Your Honour's favourable approval, but also humbly assure that he will very willingly submit, after convalescence and recovery of strength, to return in all obedience to this place, or to whatever might be imposed and ordered upon him by Your Honour. In the meantime, with Your Honour's approval, we have handed the second key of the cash box to the last undersigned of this letter, the provisional assistant Willem Slaars, so that until Your Honour's further orders and obedient commands, he may, alongside the first undersigned, be accountable for the cash in the subject case. Further, undertaking according to our bounden duty to render a respectful account to Your Honour of the principal occurrences since our above-cited humble last letter, we begin in all modesty with the trade, saying in that regard that it continues to make reasonable progress; for in the month of June last, two ships, namely one English and one French from Bengal, were here for trade. The goods brought therewith, consisting of upwards of 1200 packs of diverse cloths and linens, quantities of candy and powdered sugar, iron, pepper, etc., have mostly all been disposed of and transported away, and at present we are waiting for a new supply. For this reason we wish we may have the fortune, through Your Honour's goodness, to see our recently submitted demand for merchandise fulfilled, not doubting that we shall be able to dispose of the same profitably as well. Meanwhile, since our last report to Your Honour, we have disposed of the following of the remaining goods, to wit: 975 lb of nutmegs at the fixed price, and 29309 lb of Siamese tin at 39 mahmudis or 16 guilders, 11 stivers, 8 pennings the man of 25 lb, or the 6 lb at 9 4/15 mahmudis or 3 guilders, 19 stivers, 8 2/15 pennings, being the same price as the last and gaining thereon upwards of 58 percent. Thus remaining still in the warehouses, namely: 1598½ lb of nutmegs 3864 lb of fine Ceylon cinnamon 770 lb of mace, and 460 pieces of Coast chintz, to wit bedspreads. From Persia under date 30 9ber: 1733 shall cause to change we cannot to our regret refrain from requesting Your Honors, since there appear to be no prospects that the cinnamon and mace can be sold here, solely because the natives of this land make no use of mace at all and Malabar wild cinnamon, on account of its cheapness, is preferred over the fine Ceylon ditto, that Your Honors may be pleased to authorize us to send these two kinds of precious spices back to Your Honors by the first ship's occasion, assuring, however, in the meantime that we shall not slacken in making our utmost effort to endeavor to sell the same here. Having informed Your Honors in our above-cited respectful last letter that the contents of our cash box consisted of a sum of m:s 142309. or ƒ60481„6:8, we can now communicate to Your Honors that the same, through the sale of the merchandise mentioned 415. Since our frequently mentioned last letter, confirming news has arrived here concerning the peace concluded between the Ottoman Porte and the King of Persia, on condition that the Porte would return Tebriz, Kirmanshah, Hamadan, and Hawizeh to the Persians, and retain for itself all the places situated on this side of the River Aras, namely Erivan, Nakhchivan, Tiflis, etc.; but in the month of June last, a chaush of Achmet Pasha of Baghdad arriving here brought news that the Persian realm general Thamas Kouli Khan, not having been satisfied with that peace made by the King, had broken it again against the will of His Majesty, having notified the aforementioned Achmet Pasha by an envoy 417. From Persia under date 30 9ber: 1733 to be on his guard, for he would come to visit him. This unexpected news Achmet Pasha immediately communicated to the Court and requested reinforcements, which being sent to him, an army of 50,000 men has already been gathered in Baghdad and a similar one near Erivan, with orders, because the season has already passed and winter is at hand, not to take the field; yet being attacked by the Persians, to act defensively until the coming summer, at which time both armies, which are to be reinforced with some thousands of European troops, shall have to march, seek out the Persians, and proceed offensively. In the meantime, one neither hears nor knows where Thamas Kouli Khan is staying, but indeed that King Thamas is not very pleased with this action of his, and had excused himself regarding this incident to the Turk as being otherwise From Persia under date 30 9ber: 1733 inclined to keep his word and concluded contracts. On the 10th of the just elapsed month of July, the Governor of this city, named Abdullarrehman Pasha, deceased after an illness of 20 to 25 days; the following day, the government was entrusted by decision of the Captain Pasha and other notables of the city to the Kahya of the deceased until further orders from the Court; but on the 30th of the same month, a prominent Agha of the Baghdad Governor, the frequently mentioned Achmet Pasha, arriving here, bringing an order that this place has been given by the Court to that lord together with Baghdad, and that he must be received and obeyed as deputy, the government was transferred to the said Agha on the same day; and on the 24th of this month, this news having been confirmed by the Kapıcı or court messenger with a firman, Achmet Pasha on that very day was 418. From Persia, dated 30 November 1733 On 8 March, a Moorish ship belonging to the Moorish merchant here, Omar Tjelebi, from Zouratte, carrying: 20 bales of indigo ditto 70 ditto of cotton 30 bags of ginger 40 packs of diverse linens and some sappanwood; departed on the 29th of the same month. 8 May, an English small vessel named the Success Gurab, laden solely with Chinese porcelain from Bombahia, which is the bearer of this letter. 29 June, an English small vessel named the Fame, from Zouratta, laden with: 200 packs of diverse linens 40 bales of indigo some bar iron and some porcelain; which vessel is still lying at anchor here. 22 July, a Moorish ship belonging to the aforementioned Moorish merchant Omar Tjelebi, named Alahie Zalee, from Zouratte, with: 190 packs of diverse linens 10 bales of indigo 20 bags of gumlac and some ginger and steel, which, together with the Moorish ship also arrived on the 22nd of July, as mentioned above, named Gogai, laden with: 30 bales of cotton and 30 packs of indigo, is also still lying at anchor here. Under the date of 27 August last, with the departure from here of the English vessel the Success and the Junior Merchant Carel Koenad, we had the honor to write to Your Honors in all reverence, and although we do not doubt its good delivery, a copy thereof nevertheless accompanies this according to custom, to which we refer in all submissiveness. As a continuation, we shall state that since, on the ultimo of the aforementioned month of August, we closed the trade books of this station according to custom, we are sending a set thereof with this to Your Honors, in the hope and wish that the same, upon examination, will be found free of errors, and that we shall have the honor to learn Your Honors' satisfaction concerning them. And although on a few third-party merchandise items remaining at this station, a net sum of 4850:2: florins was profited upon sale according to the attached account of proceeds, the books at this station have nonetheless been closed with a deficit of 6544:5:8 florins, owing to the larger amounts of money remitted and the heavy loss of 21278:18 florins suffered thereon. This causes us sorrow and would weigh even more heavily on our hearts were we not assured that Your Honors, in your customary goodness, will not attribute this to our poor neglect or negligence, but rather to the circumstance and fatal events that have prevented any ship or ships from being sent hither for over two years. However, since in the aforementioned financial year no gifts whatsoever were given to the governors or to anyone else, the other expenses of this station were, on the contrary, only 6346:10:8 florins, and thus 17:5 florins less than the preceding year, so that Your Honors, by the enclosed comparison of the lesser and greater expenses of this station, may observe this if you please. And as to the inventory enclosed herewith showing what kinds and quantities of merchandise remain in the warehouses here, which we deem highly necessary to insert here as well so that Your Honors may see at first glance what they consist of, namely: 1598½ lb of nutmegs 3864 lb of Ceylon cinnamon 770 lb of mace, and 460 pieces of chintz bedspreads. And although nothing of either the one or the other has been delivered since, we would ask Your Honors not to attribute this to our lack of diligence or to the slackened trade here, but to the reasons that we took the liberty to make known to Your Honors in our humble, aforementioned latest letter. Meanwhile, trade here still makes reasonable progress, and the town is bare of all kinds of merchandise, except, however, for some unwanted Bengal linens held over for 3 to 4 years by the English and other Armenian merchants. The merchants' desire for a new supply is very strong. Furthermore, after the departure of our humble latest letter mentioned herein, no ships have arrived here for trade, but a lot of one thousand bales of coffee beans was brought in from Mocha with some tarankis. This, partly because a full thousand to fifteen hundred bales less were brought than was annually customary, and partly because the merchants were unable to obtain a sufficient assortment of goods to invest their cash, rose in price up to number 70, or 29:17 florins the maund of 25 lb, and thus 16 mahmudis or 56:16 more expensive than when we last had the honor to provide Your Honors with the price current. From Persia, dated 30 9ber 1733 Although in our humble last letter we feared that we would have to present a gift to the then newly arrived governor according to the ancient custom of these lands, we have nevertheless remained unaddressed and freed from that expense. However, on 28 7ber last, having been obliged for many reasons to accept the invitation made by the powerful sjeeg annees to the wedding of his son named sjeeg derwies as irrefutable, we proceeded on that day to his garden, where, alongside the English gentlemen, we were magnificently entertained for an entire day with local food. We were consequently obliged, a few days thereafter, to regale that gentleman, because he is of great stature and influence here, with a present to the value of f 340. Therefore, seeing that we have debited that amount to the account of gifts, we very humbly request to obtain Your Honors' esteemed approval for this, and likewise for the specifications of 422. But now people here claim that the first-mentioned Majesty or Shah Thamas, at the 423. From Persia, dated 30 9ber 1733 request of the united army commanders, has been recalled by the imperial general Thamas Coelie Chan and restored on condition that he should not interfere with the government for some time, but leave it entirely to the said Chan and his subordinates. But whether this is the truth, time will soon reveal. The rumor still continues that the oft-mentioned Thamas Coelie Chan intends to make war on the Turks, and that he has marched out of Spahan to that end, but where he has directed his way is not yet known with certainty. From Persia under date 30 November 1733 We have had the honor to receive Your Honors' respected letter of the 4th of the past month of July, on the 9th of February last Your Honors' previous letter of the 8th of January, with all such enclosures and further writings as the register indicated. It would now indeed be our duty to reply to these fully and as required, but since the time of two to three hours does not permit it, we shall only assure with the humblest respect that we shall promptly observe all the orders contained in the aforementioned transmitted enclosures, and that it shall always be our endeavor to uphold the commands of our high-commanding Lords Majores. Likewise, in compliance with Your Honors' order, we communicate the state of affairs here and state that, praise and thanks be to God, we presently live in peace and quiet, having no enemies nearby whom we need fear. We have indeed here, from the beginning of the month of April until the middle of May, been constantly threatened with being visited by a party of Persians joined by some rebellious Arabs, whom Thomas Coelien Chan had dispatched hither while he held Bagdaad besieged; but these, having dared undertake nothing due to the diligence of the rulers of this city, and in the meantime, upon the approach of the Turkish army, whose numbers were greatly exaggerated—which we may rightly report was sent for the relief of Bagdaad under the supreme command of one Topal Osman Basia—having been recalled by the aforementioned Thamas Coelie Chan, they returned again to the main body of the Persian army, and we were spared the visit of those unsavory guests. Now people here accept for certain and sure that the two armies have engaged each other near Bagdaad, and that the Persians have suffered a total defeat, whereby Bagdaad has thus been relieved; but although this news has arrived here four or five times in succession from various places, we cannot yet report it for certain, even though the native population doubts it not at all. Here there have successively arrived five ships in the roads, namely two English and one French ditto from Bengal, and one of the first-mentioned nation from Surat; but trade having been interrupted by the Bagdaad affairs, they await better times outside the same, which apparently is to follow as soon as the road becomes open; and we are in great desire then also to see the ship Castor en Pollux here with such goods and merchandise as Your Honors shall be pleased to send us, in order to profit therefrom for the service of the Honorable Company. Concerning this matter and how it transpired, we have learned that the Persian Imperial General Thamas Coelie Chan, having been informed that the Turkish army, whose numbers are estimated at 250,000 men, sent for the relief of Bagdaat—before which he had lain encamped since the month of January—had approached within two days' journey of the besieged city, he, leaving behind Mehemet Chan Boloets with 15 to 16,000 men for the siege of Bagdaat, marched out to attack it with his entire army, estimated at 150,000 men. Having encountered it on the morning of the 17th of the month just ended, he attacked it with so much fury that the Turks had to retreat and abandon their artillery; but being driven forward again, the Turks nevertheless, after a stubborn battle lasting until after sunset, brought matters so far that Thamas Chan, who personally had fought like a lion and received two wounds, was forced to retreat with his men.

From Persia, dated 30 November 1733 to retreat and, under cover of the night, take flight, whither is not known for certain, though it is said via Hamadan toward Spahan. Meanwhile, Mahomet Chan Boloets, having learned this news from some fugitives, fled toward Soester with 3 to 4,000 horsemen, leaving behind 12,000 infantrymen, that is, 12 field pieces and a large portion of provisions in his camp. Achmet Bascia, being informed of this by deserters, ordered all his forces outward, who were fortunate enough to put to death everything that drew breath, and subsequently returned to the city with the obtained plunder, where, due to the heavy siege, fully 60,000 people perished of hunger, and 70 lb of wheat or barley had been sold for 8,000 mamoodies or ƒ 340, and scarcely 2 horses of the Bascia remained, though grain or wheat has now dropped to 18 mamoodies for the aforementioned weight. After this victory, the serasker or commander-in-chief, Topal Osman Bascia, arrived at Bagdaat with his entire army, held a verbal conference with Achmet Bascia, and sent a certain Polat Bascia with 50,000 horsemen to Kirmansja to protect that place and to ruin Hamadan and surrounding regions; subsequently, after a stay of 3 days, he marched with the remainder of the army to Karkoek to await further orders from the court there, as it is claimed the aforementioned Osman Bascia had no other orders than to relieve Bagdaat. From Persia under date 30 November 1733 Permission having been granted, whereby one of us two was licensed to undertake the journey to Batavia in order to appear before the illustrious presence of the High and Mighty grandees there, and to contract with their High Excellencies for the establishment of a favorable trade in the path of friendship and on the most fitting footing, this was brought to us in the most fortunate time. However, since it has pleased God to take our aforesaid father into His glorious majesty, and moreover since that time until now this entire realm has fallen into such confusion and devastation that no one may consider himself master of himself or his goods, and furthermore that everything undertaken in these times steadily appears to turn out amiss without the blessing of Heaven, it is thus that, subject to your Excellency's highly esteemed favor, we must desist therefrom for so long until Heaven may be pleased at last to have mercy upon these thoroughly ruined and oppressed regions and poor people and to grace them with a new blessing. And notwithstanding that according to the content of the former old decrees, by which it appears that whenever the silk trade is not conducted the gift goods must be delivered, We have nevertheless—in consideration that between these powerful states there has always been a sincere and steadfast friendship, and that the highly exalted Lord Alie Merdoem Chan, Ambassador, has brought your Honour's good services to our knowledge, and also that at this time the highly exalted Lord Mahamed Allie Chan, having arrived at Costij to depart for Hindoustan, likewise received great satisfaction from your Honour's manifold good services and expressed this to me, as well as that the servants of the said Company have continuously been of service to this crown—gifted the aforementioned three-year gift goods that remained with your Honour under protest. And regarding this, the Isfahan regents have also been ordered to make no further claim on those gifts.
