From Persia under date 30 9b:r 1733 Honorable, Valiant, Wise, Prudent, Discreet, and very Generous Gentlemen, Honorable Ruling Gentlemen, Because the Bakhtiari Lurs, before and since Lord Thamas Chan suffered the defeat by the Turks—of which more in the following—have kept all the roads around this city blocked and plundered passing and coming travelers, and even massacred some of the rahhdars or road guards at Orsini, 6 to 7 miles from here, we have therefore not been able to write to your Honors for such a long time, or since July 10 last. However, the roads having now become a little safer, we hope that the bearer of this, the Honorable Company's runners Petrus and Pooges, who have both received their full wages until the end of this coming month, will be fortunate enough to get through safely. Therefore, in this confidence, we have the honor to inform your Honors that, having learned for certain on July 27 that the regents were to depart from here according to the Duke's order, we sent the interpreter Elias Sahid to Lord Mirza Rahiem to request his Honor that, since the interpreter Joseph Sahid had not yet arrived with the original talega of the Duke, and we had learned his Honor was about to depart from here, and since his Honor was pleased to make difficulties about returning the known obligation without that warrant, he might kindly be pleased to leave the said document here with someone so that it could be returned to us as soon as the original talega was brought. But if he were pleased to return that paper to us before the arrival of the said interpreter, he would certainly do us no less of a favor, because we were only waiting for it to be able to send runners to the Coast. The interpreter then having returned to the lodge, brought as an answer that the same, having initially raised some difficulty regarding this, had finally, through the intervention of one Mahomed Cassum Beeck, the Duke's chief fowler—whose father, when the little Shah Abbas was at Qazvin, was previously a good friend of the Honorable Company—written an order on the back of the copy of the warrant to the mustawfi of the city to return the said obligation to us. Whereupon the interpreter also went to the mustawfi three days in a row, and the same continuously put off the interpreter, saying on one occasion that he had no time to search for it among his other papers, and again that having searched for it he had not found such a paper, and even that no entry of it had been made in the books. Thus we thought that this gentleman, like others, was looking for a bribe, or else that Mirza Rahiem might have written that order to please the said saras basje and secretly instructed him, the mustawfi, to turn us away with one answer or another. We even had it conveyed to the mustawfi that if he would send us that document, we on our side would not fail to present him with a gift. But he nevertheless persisted in what he had said with costly oaths, and the interpreter having gone repeatedly to Mirza Rahiem for that purpose, we nevertheless made no progress thereby. Likewise, afterwards, upon obtaining the original talega on the 31st of the said month of July with the arrival of Joseph Sahid here, we did not obtain the said document. For it happened that on the 2nd of the past month of August, we paid a visit to the governor currently here, Ibrahim Chan—former steward of Shah Thamas—to welcome his Honor in person upon his arrival here, as the other nations had also done before us; and that very same day, due to the defeat suffered by Thamas Chan, a counter-order arrived that the regents here should continue until further orders, and that the often-mentioned Mirza Rahiem likewise appeared before the said Governor while we were still there. The bookkeeper Van Leijp addressed his Honor in polite terms, saying that whereas his Honor was initially pleased to make difficulties about returning the known obligation because the original talega had not yet been brought here, but had nevertheless afterwards had the goodness to order the mustawfi to return the same to him, the bookkeeper; and that that gentleman had nonetheless bluntly said that paper was not with him, and he, Van Leijp, was therefore certain that the same might also have said so because the original warrant was not present, which he, the bookkeeper, having now received, hoped that his Honor would be so good as to have the said obligation returned according to its contents, so that the required notice thereof could be given to your Honors, since the ships were only being delayed for that reason in order to provide the necessary report thereof to their High Excellencies at Batavia. And that order having been handed to his Honor by Joseph Sahid to read, his Honor, together with the two other regents, namely Mirza Fatulla and Mirza Cassum, who were also present there, admitted and swore that the said obligation was with none of them, and they firmly believed it must still have remained with Mir Abdul Cassum. From Persia, under date 30 November 1733 that the promissory note was not with him and consequently must have remained with Mier Abbul Cassum, and that upon the arrival here of the same (of whom His Honour said he had received news that he had arrived at Tjemen Hooft, situated an 18 to 19 days' journey from here, to come hither shortly), he will without delay have to restore the said paper to him, Van Leijpzigh, at the earliest opportunity, according to the contents of the honoured talliga, with which we then also had to content ourselves for the time being. And immediately beneath the aforesaid copy, the same was approved by the other two and, sealed by the three of them, handed over to us. And as we came to learn for certain a few days thereafter that the steward of the aforementioned Mier Abbul Cassum, named Aga Fazibulla, was staying at Cassian, we, in order to test whether the said promissory note might also have remained with him, had another authenticated copy of the aforementioned tallega prepared. Which, together with aforesaid letter, we then sent to him on the 13th thereafter by the Honourable Company's runner Hadje Isoph; just as aforementioned Miarsa Rahiem has also had the goodness to dispatch an express letter regarding that matter to the vizier of the said small place, with orders to search among the people of the oft-mentioned Mier Abbul Cassum for the promissory note in question and to forward the same to us at the earliest opportunity. But the bearer of those papers having returned here after remaining away for eight days, we received from him the answer from the aforementioned steward that his master, upon departing from here for Bagdad, took the aforementioned promissory note with him, and that in case he should not have delivered the same to the duke, it would certainly still have remained with him, and that we would therefore not do amiss to send an express messenger to Gorassan to demand the said document from him. Whereupon we, also being assured by the interpreter Joseph Sahid that the said paper had not been with the duke, as he would otherwise certainly have retrieved it and returned it to him, and also that that matter has been annulled in the books of his secretariat and the excerpt registered on that account has been torn out from them, have indeed resolved to have the aforementioned runner make a short journey to Gorassa to that end. For which purpose we also again had a letter requested from the so frequently mentioned Miersa Rahiem for Mier Abbul Cassum, and obtained it from him forthwith. But as we have learned from good authority that the duke has sent people to all the roads of Gorassan to allow none other than his own chappars or post-riders to pass, we, in the hope of Your Honours' favorable approval, thought it best in such a dangerous time to wait with this until a quiet occasion, so as to avoid all ill suspicions that might be raised by the sending of such a courier, and which could bring us nothing but trouble. Meanwhile, the aforementioned second interpreter of the Honourable Company, Joseph Sahid, as already mentioned hereinbefore, having arrived here on 31 July, declared to us that he would have departed hither from Bagdad a few days earlier than 26 June last past, had he been able to find a secure opportunity and had the roads not been so unsafe to travel. Just as he almost ran the danger of falling into the hands of the robbers and murderers, for not an hour before he had set out from one manzil to go to the other, 7 persons had newly been killed on the public road; besides that the Lors kept the roads from Persia and Gorsaar hither closely blocked, which is also the reason why he had to tarry 14 to 15 days longer on the road. Thus living in the hope that Your Honours, having well considered those difficulties, will be pleased favorably to excuse him in that regard, he further hopes from Your Honours' goodness that Your Honours will kindly be pleased to pass the travel expenses incurred by him on the journey to and fro, amounting to the sum of 3404 mahmudis or 1446:14:— guilders according to the enclosed copy specification, assuring that in that regard he observed nothing but the so highly commanded frugality in all parts. Furthermore, he also eagerly awaits Your Honours' favorable approval concerning the fact that, due to the urgency of the matter, without Your Honours' obtained license, besides the goods taken from here and specified by ours of 1 May last and presented to some persons (with which he could by no means get by), he was forced to execute promissory notes for a quantity of 750 pieces of gold Moorish ducats to the gentlemen Hassan Alie Chan, master of the hunt, Miersa Zachie, the duke's jester, Malla Mhamed, treasurer, and the first clerk of the ordinances, Miersa Megdie Astarabadie, to be paid to their families here, in order to stop their mouths therewith, so that they should be helpful and not opposed to us regarding the settlement of the matter in question, namely the unjustly demanded three-year recognition goods; for they otherwise could have caused us trouble enough, since

From Persia under date 30 9b 1733 since they had in the beginning been commissioned by the duke to examine the Honorable Company's affairs anew, whereupon they had then sharpened their teeth very much to bite us in the most venomous manner, particularly the first-mentioned gentleman, who had repeatedly enjoyed ample and rich benefits from our competitors the English, and having never received anything from us, was thus very incensed against us; and in the first matter, as this itself had been gifted by the duke through the intercession of the well-known Monsieur Lazare, he had not been able to counter it, yet through the incitement of the other three he insisted very firmly that one should demand a new obligation from us for the gift goods of this current year, for everything to be delivered here; besides and in addition to which Your Excellencies would have to send someone from yonder to Resht and Lahijan to receive the silk there, although this was contrary to the contract, which would have caused nothing but new troubles; whereas now that the mouths of those barkers have been stopped therewith, the Honorable Company has remained freed from those troublesome matters. Wherefore we, together with the said Joseph Sahid, hope that Your Excellencies will be pleased to approve those gifts made to such a brutal and tyrannical court in such confused times, which in our opinion, subject to Your Excellencies' favorable interpretation, are passable; as also that we here have caused those moneys to be paid through the Honorable Company's broker's proxy Sendel Das to the families of the aforementioned four persons, by whom we were harassed enough on that account, the gifts thus amounting in total to a sum of ƒ7140:10:15, as the inserted copy of the account thereof will demonstrate to Your Excellencies. And we have had the three purchased pack mules sold here again on the horse market, but could not get more for them than 900 mans or ƒ382:10:— in total, while for 600 mans or ƒ255 of that amount we have credited the account of travels and journeys, and for the remaining 300 mans or ƒ127:10: the account of gifts, as being the purposes for which those animals were purchased and used, which we hope will meet with Your Excellencies' favorable approval. Since our last of 10 July, we have been approached here for a loan of money both by the rulers and by Lord Ali Mardan Khan, but we turned them down with polite expressions and our own embarrassment to meet our expenses; yet the last-mentioned showed some dissatisfaction thereat, for he retorted to the interpreter Elias Sahid, as if offended, that he, the interpreter, should say with his compliments to the bookkeeper of Leipzig what he was then good for in the world; but we have nevertheless let the matter rest there in the hope of Your Excellencies' favorable interpretation, and live in confidence that no one will trouble us for any money in the future; but if such should happen contrary to our expectations, everyone will be turned away with the same polite answer. Meanwhile, when the English were likewise approached for money by the rulers, the chief of that nation, Mr. John Geekie, offered them a reasonable sum in merchandise, but as that is abandoned in these times due to the continuous taxation, no buyers being found, they did not accept it, about which the Briton is no less pleased, for it would certainly have had to be considered as lost. Because we cannot obtain large-format paper here, we are unable at present to send Your Excellencies the trade booklets, wherefore we most obediently request Your Excellencies to provide us with not only that but also with other writing stationery, as we requested of Your Excellencies in ours of 22 March, by the first opportunity, so that we may thus become able to prepare the booklets and dispatch them to Your Excellencies, God willing, before the end of the year; while we live in hope of learning in due time Your Excellencies' approval that at present the original Persian letter addressed by Lord Tahmasp Khan to the Honorable Governor is not transmitted to Your Excellencies herewith on account of the insecurity of the roads, for which the first quiet opportunity will have to be awaited. How the news here is still varying as before, Your Honours will, if it pleases you, be able to perceive from the enclosed extract of our daily register, to which we then for the most part very humbly refer ourselves; we shall only mention here that on the 2nd of August last we received the sudden news here that Lord Tahmasp Khan, having put the Turkish advance troops to flight and attacking the Ottoman artillery with a mad fury, was greeted with such an unceasing fire that he was forced to take flight to Hamadan with the loss of all his baggage and artillery, without our ever having been able to learn the real truth of how many men he actually lost or still retained, while it is indeed said that the loss was more than 50000 men who mostly, while fleeing, are said to have perished of thirst for lack of water. In the meantime, some preparations of other artillery, tents, and clothes were made here by the master of ceremonies and other regents, with which they departed from here for Hamadan on the 4th instant. It is now said that this arrogant general will yet risk a desperate battle to avenge himself on the Turks or to lose his own life in the attempt; thus we must now wait for time to reveal who will ultimately triumph over this army, as well as how he intends at the very last to deal with the wretched king, for it is generally said that he has had him brought to Mazandaran, without however being able to know for certain whether he is still closely guarded as before.

We have not yet visited and welcomed this lord to date, but have excused ourselves under various pretexts, only in the hope of receiving a ship in a few days so as to kill two birds with one stone, as they say. But should this turn out contrary to our expectation, we shall indeed be compelled, in order not to endanger the Company's precious respect among this grasping and greedy nation through any slight, to give 7 to 800 mann in presents again with Your Honors' pleasure and approval, the more so since the newly arrived governor mentioned above is a son-in-law of the bascia. But since the Russians were unwilling to grant them passage through their borders, and these forces had to clear a path for themselves by force, something unpalatable for the Turks might well result from this in the future. However, the election of a new king in Poland gives apprehension of new troubles, on account of the many pretenders who exist for it, consisting of King Stanislaus, the Electoral Prince of Saxony, the Prince of Prussia, Prince Sobieski, the Prince of Bavaria, the Prince of Portugal, the Spanish prince Don Carlos, the English Pretender, the Prince of Württemberg, and the Duke of Lorraine. France and the Grand Lord would gladly have Stanislaus, but the Roman Emperor, Muscovy, and Prussia oppose them with all their might and have formed an army of 50 thousand men to oppose Stanislaus. Prince Lubomirski, governor of Cracow, has an army of 16 thousand men together to strengthen his faction, but in the month of July it was not yet known for whom votes had been cast, although in general it is doubted whether Stanislaus will attain the throne. From Persia, dated 30 November 1733 sea, and the Emperor is having 12 thousand men march to Italy in order to keep a watchful eye in that region. On the 29th of the past month of October, ninety-seven Persians were brought here from Baghdad, mostly the notables of the district of Kirman, and among them one Ganadan Beek, a man of very great power, so it is said, in Kirman, who was taken prisoner of war and, ransomed at 2500 tomans, sent hither to raise that money. With the consent of the regent here, they visited us to see whether we would lend them that money; but as we lacked the means to do so, much less having Your Honours' orders in the matter at hand, we politely turned them down, and consequently were not approached about it any further. Now it is said that they have already collected half of that sum from various Georgians, Greeks, and Banians, and paid it to the regent, and are continually doing their best regarding the other half to settle it as well, and thus obtain their freedom. As for the further changes and arrangements regarding this Directorate brought about by the said Right Honourable, Highly Esteemed Gentlemen and by ourselves through circumstance, that which accompanies this letter in writing will be able to elucidate fully; whereto we affectionately refer, further offering to the new Honourable Mr Commander all the further papers required for His Honour's information, in order to be informed of what has occurred here, it being our intention, with all that is on hand and its consequences, as soon as the ships Jacoba and Windhond shall have been dispatched towards Batavia, to offer to Your Honours at the earliest opportunity, on the Castor and Pollux, along with the further requested merchandise. 289 From Persia, dated 30 November 1733 3 being voyages, upon the preservation whereof depended the principal trade, which was being conducted here very quietly within a very narrow scope, it was outstanding in every respect from the writing of Madenni his ill will and absolute desire, if it were possible for him, according to his own letters, to treat this city as with Bassaidoor, to ruin everything, or to proceed with it just as badly or even worse with murders, robberies, and burnings, as they had already done to the aforesaid place. Wherefore the Commander believed that he ought not to neglect the necessary precautions in this regard, but, being ourselves obliged thereto as far as possible, to accommodate the said merchants by securing and protecting them alongside us for the greatest benefit of the Honorable Company and the preservation of trade, etc. Annexing hereto also some instructive reasons serving for further elucidation of the two newly admitted members, the members collectively once again recalled the precarious condition and the above-mentioned voluntary offer made by the Englishman without inducement or persuasion toward a mutual alliance with us, remarking the same to be of very useful perspective for the Honorable Company in order thereby in time to be able to bring some advantage or other to our lords and masters, asking the members what they judged most precious in this regard, and in case of consent to an alliance with the Briton, to what extent one might engage herein with the same.
