From Persia under Date 23 September 1734. And Pollux is hereby ordered immediately to weigh anchor, and under the pilotage of the pilot who recently returned from Bassouna with that vessel, who is returned with them again for that purpose, to set sail, taking their course inside the island of Kissim through to Bassaidoor, in order to convoy the Duke Mhamet Lettiesschan, who departed thither yesterday evening from this roadstead on a small English vessel, if found there, further to the island of Keijs, or in case of failing to encounter him at that roadstead, nevertheless to continue their voyage through to the just-mentioned island of Keijs, where arriving, they shall, after a stay of 2 days at the very utmost, request their dismissal from the aforementioned Chan to return back hither; yet in case of refusal, or postponement of departure after the said Duke has beforehand shown preparation thereto, they must nevertheless return without making further stir or commotion on that account. After this business was concluded, it was given into consideration by the well-mentioned Lord Commander, his present successor, and the Council, concerning the present condition of the Court and the Company's true interests in these regions, with sincere sentiments, how Thamas Coelichan, currently ruling this Kingdom alone and maker of conditions of victory at his own arbitrary discretion, following his atrocious intentions according to rumors recently received from Spahan, had there put to death 20 of the first persons of old who had been of high rank, among whom even some remnants of the royal blood were said to belong, under a mere pretext, pretending that if they remained alive and the King came to the throne, they would only cause him harm, thus fearing, he the Commander as well as our letters that had come to speak to him of this tyranny, it might very easily happen that both companies would shortly be stripped of their good friends, upon whom at one time they had still dared to rely to push their interests as occasion permitted, having at the same time given to understand in a deliberate manner whether one could form much other thought of a certain letter written by Thamas Beeg, than that in all his dealings he would certainly acknowledge the loan of the ships to have occurred in the service of the Crown, or to speak properly, of Thamas Coeli Chan, but not for their private etc.; ordering thereupon, after reading it aloud, to have the same inserted herein, and which then was also done. Translation of the Persian missive from the Serdaar Thamas Beq to the Honorable Leendert de Cleen, Senior Merchant and Commander of this Persian Directorate, noted and brought here by the Company's runner named Toher on 7 June Anno 1734. Where, after preceding compliments regarding the purchase, in the manner proposed to me by Your Excellency, that a trustworthy man on behalf of Duke Mhamet Lettiesschan ought to be dispatched to Bhender Zouratta with such recommendation from Your Excellency to the Company's plenipotentiaries there, I judge on the contrary that it will be by far the best to let those of Your Excellency perform that work entirely; wherefore it is my desire that Your Excellency send me the Company's interpreter, whereupon I shall place into his hands the necessary funds for the ship trade and send him back with them to Your Excellency, to the end that subsequently, through a competent person on behalf of Your Excellency at Zouratta, the purchase of some ships in the service of Kamas Coeliechan may be brought to full effect. Further, that Your Excellency's wealth may increase and his life be prolonged will be pleasing to me, which I sincerely wish. In the margin stood: the communication concerning the sending of ships to the island of Keijs has pleased me, but of its effects no knowledge has yet come to me. Send the ship of Your Excellency with speed to Bhender Cang to take in my soldiers there, for the destruction of the cursed rebellious enemies, and let an answer to this reach me with speed. 543 From Persia under date 23 September 1734. by such persons who were known to be concerned only with receiving presents, according to the custom of the country yet otherwise insatiable, and at the same time possessed an abundance of power to do both good and evil, and asked to that end whether one ought to proceed to make a magnificent gift, as the English seemed to have quite prepared, or rather to refrain from doing so. Upon which arguments, after attentive listening, everyone found themselves inwardly convinced of the friendless times in this realm, and that the pretexts easily occurring to the great minions of Chamascoeliechan who hold power in Persia to act by fair means or foul wherever the least bit is to be scraped were necessary to prevent in the most cautious manner; the dukes Thamas Beecq, Lettiefschan, and theirs, of which first two persons it convincingly appeared effective that they held sway over all actions with the usurper; and moreover, if they were remembered by the English and not on our behalf, the same, according to the nature of the matter, would undoubtedly also have to produce a disadvantageous impression. Thus, after having considered and examined many pressing motives, it was finally judged and resolved with a unanimous voice for the welfare of the lords and masters in these regions to bestow upon the said two dukes Thamas Beecq, Lettieff Chan, Miersa Takkie, Miersa Bakker, and the first-named's principal servants, according to the condition of the times and the weight of the matters, such gifts as can be ascertained not to differ too greatly from what the English intend to do, and whereby one wholeheartedly hopes to obtain with these powerful lords at least as much insinuation as is sometimes utterly necessary, and now having no old friends left at the desolate court. To Persia, under date 23 September 1734. thanking them for their otherwise to be taken trouble. Furthermore, the testator having been asked by me, provisional secretary, whether he also wished to remember the poor, answered no. Further, the testator institutes and nominates as his sole and universal heir his wife Iohanna van Hoorn, residing at Zwolle, or in the event of her decease, the next of kin ab intestato, over all movable and immovable property, actions, and credits, etcetera, in order to accept the same as her own and according to her pleasure, and to dispose freely thereof without anyone's contradiction or hindrance in the world. For the distribution of his credit balance and the monthly wages still to be earned, and nothing further, the testator requests the noble gentlemen directors at the Chamber of Enkhuizen, for which he sailed out in the year 1730 on the ship de Geertruijd, that they may be disbursed by their Right Honorable Lordships where and in such manner as their Honors shall deem proper. There also appeared for this purpose the authorized agent mentioned in the heading of this document, who declared that he voluntarily accepted the charge conferred upon him, under obligation according to law. 453 From Persia, under date 23 September 1731. All the foregoing having been distinctly read out to him, the testator, he attested to holding the same as his testament, last and final will, desiring that the same shall be punctually complied with and observed in all parts, whether as a testament, codicil, or in such manner as may best stand according to the form of law, even if any strictly required solemnities might have been omitted herein, since he, the testator, considered the same as inserted, imploring hereto the beneficial privilege of all judges and magistrates. Whereof, at the session of 10 May and 13 June prior, a report was ordered from the aforementioned vessel by Gijsbert Hageman, to prepare a complete and circumstantial report concerning his cruise, his actions in conjunction with the English, and what transpired in that regard, in order that the Council might be informed of the principal events of that cruise, and furthermore that it might appear from his conduct that he, the master, strictly observed the instructive orders sent successively from here. In compliance with that charge, the aforementioned master submitted the following today: Report rendered to the Honorable Leendert de Cleen, Senior Merchant and outgoing Director, and the Honorable Damis Heij, Senior Merchant and incoming Commander, together with the Council of this Gamron Directorate, by the master Gysbert Hageman, commanding the Honorable Company's ship Eesbroek, concerning what occurred during his cruise around the islands of Congo, Keijs, etc. Commanding Gentlemen and Honorable Sirs: In compliance with Your Honors' esteemed orders, I set sail on 12 April past to keep a watchful eye behind the island of Kissen and thereabouts on the fleeing rebels. On 22 ditto, close to Bassaidoor, the English galley The Prince of Wales, Captain Louis, joined us with a letter from Your Honors. After reading it, we jointly continued our journey to the aforementioned island, where we arrived on 25 of the aforementioned month of May, and where we found Captain Toaklij with the galley Britannia, together with Sheikh Rasjet with two of his ships and 5 to 6 vessels, still lying in the roads. Subsequently, the aforementioned Captain Toaklij related to us how, in our absence, he had gone ashore in order, if possible, to lure some of the rebels on board with sweet talk under the pretext of transporting them to Bassoura, and thus get them into his power. This would also have succeeded had it not been for Sheikh Rasjet's people. The Captain, noticing that this ruse had failed him, subsequently attempted to seize some vessels, of which they had already cast off the ropes and thrown them to Sheikh Rasjet's vessels in order to tow them away. But upon refusal thereof, this attempt ended in failure, and he was forced to sheer off with a loss of 2 dead and 5 wounded. Whereupon we resolved, namely Captain Louis, Toaklij, and I, to act in concert in everything for the execution of one thing or another. On 30 May we learned that one Sheikh Tabara had positioned himself to the west of the aforementioned island and had sent a request to the English Captains asking to speak with them both, whereupon they saw fit to send their mates to him. The English Captains would not have let me know anything of this had I not happened to be on board with them and seen these preparations. I asked them whether they should not let the aforementioned Sheikh know that a Dutch ship was also lying there. They answered that it was of no consequence. And I asked them in turn whether this vessel and flag were not worthy, and also that I thought we were to act in unison according to our agreement, and that I would brook no slight whatsoever. After which reading, going back a little to the consideration of how the English ship captains had acted with the said skipper Hageman, in what suspicious manner, which ran directly against the agreement made or entered into by us with the heads of that nation here, they had withheld from him the necessary intelligence whenever something of note was to be undertaken, as seen in the report, and therefore with good reasons it is assumed that they did not wish to let him participate in the honour sought by him as well as undertaken by us to the respect of the Honourable Company; and once again with mature attention having made all pros and contras regarding this point, and the whole conduct of the English having been found full of finesses and infidelity, just as wishing to insinuate themselves in that manner at court, or having to do so for want of a more honourable opportunity: so it has been unanimously resolved, for all these and more adduced motives, in order not to let the respect and interest of the Honourable Company undergo in the future any, even the very least, disadvantage, to rescind the resolution dated 21 November 1733 held concerning the contract, and now to establish to let the said English enjoy, as before, only outward friendship, and for the rest to let them steer their own course; whereof the Honourable Lord Director

Deficiency in weight on the entire quantity of nutmegs in the year 1729 per the [vessel] brought to Bassoura, it is out of consideration of the alongside—. Proceeded to the matters concerning the Bassoura office, and produced for review a sworn declaration drawn up by the Honorable Mr. Heij during his administration there, vessel Binnewijsent, together with the assistant Willem Slaars, brought— — regarding the deficiency in weight found on the nutmegs sent thither per the vessel Binnewijsent in the year 1729 to the quantity of 5235 lbs; so that after retail or delivery of the same, a deficiency in weight was detected, as demonstratively cited below, as— Against that received over there per the aforementioned vessel . . . lbs 5235:—. Per cash sale successively up to 11 May of the current year Net lbs 4996½. Collected successively in dust delivery . . . 70:— lbs 5066½. Gave a deficiency in weight of 3¼ percent or lbs 168½. Taking into consideration the elapsed time which was required for the turnover of that quantity, as also because there are more examples at hand of such losses at that office on other kinds of spices and weighed goods, From Persia, under date 23 September 1734. Granted by the joint ministers to write off the dust in their [books]— at least that we have applied our utmost effort to preserve them as well as possible, and have directly nor indirectly profited from the aforesaid deficiency in weight, nor stand to profit, we testify to be the pure truth. From Persia, dated 23 September 1734. 14595 lb of that same sort is, in which the spoilage by dampness had already been observed at Gamron; and it is therefore very easily conceivable that the said quantity retained some moisture, besides the great quantity which inevitably becomes crushed due to the jolting between the canassers, packages, etc., and remains clinging inside them; not yet calculating the quantity that normally gets lost during processing, so that the ship's officers testify that against this, no greater care could have been applied beyond all the caution that was taken. 150 canassers of candy sugar, containing 43825 lb, and have yielded only 43168 lb, thus this gives a shortage in weight of 657 lb, being 1½ per cent, which could not have been prevented because some canassers, as appeared externally, had absorbed some moisture, whereby some syruping and consequently these honey shortages were caused. 300 ditto powder sugar should weigh according to invoice 88397 lb, but have yielded no more than 87293 lb, ergo shortage 1104 lb, making 1¼ per cent, which for the same reasons as just presented for the candy sugar are now also alleged. 30 small chests of cloves should have contained 4004 lb, but have yielded here in the scales house only 3969 lb, wherefore shortage 35 lb. Thus this gives a shortage in weight of 5/8 per cent, concerning which the ship's officers in all sincerity testify to be able to apply no other cause than that this precious fruit, by the heat of the ship's hold during a lengthy time, both at the Gamron roadstead and on the voyage hither, surely must have dried in, besides that some of the small chests being in somewhat poor condition and having parted from one another, here and there some cloves were spilled during handling, etc., against which however everything possible was done for prevention. From Persia, dated 23 September 1734. 20 bales of Javanese cardamom should according to invoice yield 938 lb, and have upon reweighing yielded only 930 lb, so that on this there is a shortage of 8 lb, or rather 3/9 per cent, of which underweight drying in must likewise have been the cause, against which it must furthermore be taken into consideration that the same had been poured into single gunny sacks, whereby during handling and the underweight of the crushed grains, dust came to fly away, which likewise could not be prevented. Sappanwood should have been according to invoice 10000 lb, and upon reweighing there was obtained only 9904 lb, wherefore likewise a shortage of 96 lb, being scarcely 1 per cent, which notoriously is to be attributed to the drying in inside the ship, together with the splintering during handling. 4 chests of various cloths, being numbered 1 to 4, 1 small chest with cambric cloths, numbered 3, 1 ditto spice oils, numbered 2, 6 pots of preserves, 1 small chest with writing materials, marked No 10, all of which goods, having been found well-conditioned and inspected, were received in that manner and stored in the warehouses. 5 pieces of house beams, 3 Jassem beams, 50 teak boards, 6 bundles of binding rattans, 30 lb of assorted nails, 6 lb of packing twine, 18 pieces of staging stones, together with 1 gold qalyan, likewise delivered ashore in good order, were also stored as such in the proper place, free of damage. 420 cans of French wine contained in half a leaguer, an aam, and three carboys turned out well, and as such were delivered on board. In the New Office at Bassora, 5 April 1734. Underneath stood: For the delivery, signed, whereto answered Jan Valentijnsen Visser and H. v. Homoed; at the side stood: For the receipt, was signed, A. v. Suchtelen, Wm Slaars; underneath stood: Agrees, A. v. Suchtelen. Exhibiting further the Honorable Commander the underweight on the returned cinnamon, mace, and nutmeg dust received back from there concerning, perceived upon the drawn up here Finding of some painted chintz bedspreads, gingam pinasse Coast, as well as finding on the of some spices, from there by and dust of nutmegs per the ship Castor en Pollux, with its return from Bassoura 601 From Persia under date 23 September 1734. Bassoura on 9 June of this running year, brought in loco, specifically as below Things, as: 2 packages with painted chintz bedspreads 1 ditto gingam pinasse Coast 3 packages as above, which upon opening, counting, and inspection of the pieces were found all in order, and complete according to the packing notes, and stored. 44 bales of odorless and tasteless cinnamon, being former Ceylon, which according to the Bassoura books at 80 lb iron each, ought to weigh net lb 3520. And have yielded here on the scale all together in gross lb 3680. From which deducted the tare as usual upon delivery to the merchants at 6 lb each comes to lb 264. And thus for the whole net lb 3416. Therefore an underweight of 2 1/2 percent or lb 104. From Persia under date 23 September 1734. Because of the request of the broker Moeltjent for his discharge from there, first seek another and give notice of his status; the ministers regarding this will have to proceed in the most economical manner possible, according to the economy so often recommended to them. The broker Moeltjent, according to the letters from those ministers, having requested his discharge from that service for reasons of bodily debility and physical decline during his stay there, as well as permission to travel hither in order to be employed here in some other capacity in the service of the Honorable Company; and also, reflection having been made upon the request of the ministers to be allowed, upon the discharge of this man, to appoint another broker of their own choosing, it was decided in that regard to notify the Residents there by the next opportunity that before the said Moeltjent is discharged from that employment, they shall endeavor to search for another capable person of good credit, and then communicate to us his status and circumstances, in order to await from here the approval and thereupon the confirmation or rejection of the same, and the further orders regarding it. After which, having reflected that the delivery made of 100 maunds, or 7500 lbs, of firewood and 11 ditto, or 825 lbs, of pitch to the officers of Castor and Pollux, upon their petition submitted there, had taken place in accordance with the respected orders dated 20 June 1733 sent hither from Their High Nobilities in Batavia, so for the proof thereof the contents thereof are inserted here: Request by the officers of Castor and Pollux for obtaining firewood and pitch presented there, inserted here. And to conclude the Bassoura business, the Honorable Commander produced the original demand for goods obtained from Bassoura, bringing at the same time into consideration the arguments alleged in their oft-mentioned letter, to await those goods with the utmost speed, many prospects of a quick sale being assumed by those ministers because the merchant there, arrived with cash from far and wide, is merely waiting for the ratification of the peace treaty between the Porte and the Persian Empire. However, which seemed truly founded on such weak grounds, it is still to be feared that on account of the caprice of Thamas Coelie Chan, by which that usurper forces everything through, that region might at some time again be set in the fire and flame of war. Upon this the Honorable Mr. Heij considered that one did not need to proceed quite so quickly to the fulfillment, but rather that the ships Barbestein and Castor and Pollux must necessarily be prepared for their departure to Batavia, and in order to afford no reasons of hindrance therein, it was unanimously approved to suspend the fulfillment of the Bassoura requisition—also considering the unspent capital, the recorded amount there both in goods and money to the value of f 196,246:4:—, until after the departure of the aforementioned ships, when that factory can satisfy the demand, either in whole or in part according to possibility, out of the goods on hand or from the goods to be brought in that demanding period from Batavia. According to our Resolution of 31 March of the current year, having been resolved upon the resumption of the findings of the ship Beesbroek to have the quantity of 1,373 lbs of rice that was found wet and suffocated thrown into the sea according to custom, so today, as proof of that performance, the report pertaining thereto was presented in this council, as appears from the following.

Commanding Gentlemen and Honorable Gentlemen, In pursuance of Your Honors' respected orders, we, the undersigned, as ordinary committee members, proceeded to the Company's warehouse, where a quantity of 1373 lb, say thirteen hundred and seventy-three pounds, of spoiled rice brought here per the ship Elsbroek, which, in the presence of the Dispenser and the ship's authorities of the aforesaid vessel, we caused to be thrown into the sea, whereby, Honorable Commanding Gentlemen and Honorable Gentlemen, we hope to have fulfilled our commission according to duty, therefore taking the liberty to sign ourselves, that is, with the utmost respect, underneath stood: Your Honors' bounden and obedient servants, was signed: S. Clement and E. Abel, drawn up in the presence of and delivered to the Honorable Gentlemen Leendert de Cleen and Dames Heij, senior merchants and commanders of this Directorate with its dependencies, together with the Council, by us, signed: G. Hageman and I. W. Prove. In the margin: Gamron, the 26th of June Anno 1734. After all these proceedings, the Honorable Commander showed the members the short strengths of all such European seafaring persons as were assigned here ashore and on the ships Elsbroek, Barbesteijn, and Castor en Pollux, and finding the same, after addition made, to consist of 207 heads in being, as: 23 dittoes ashore here, 63 on Elsbroek, 73 on Barbesteijn, 48 on Castor en Pollux, 207 heads, as stated. Thereupon, he asked in round inquiry in what manner the Council judged concerning this, and in case Castor en Pollux—according to the report of a chappar arrived this morning from Congo, that that vessel was already on the return voyage—should return in 1 to 2 days, and from the suffering on the Basra voyage were recovered regarding the crew as well as the cargoes, the arrangement should be made. Thus it was deemed good to hear the masters at hand, Gijsbert Hogeman of Elsbroek, whose charter equaled that of Castor en Pollux, and C. Bommer of the ship Barbesteijn, in the meeting about what each would require to undertake the voyage to Batavia, the first named giving a number of 45 to 50, and the latter a number of 95 to 100 men. These people having been dismissed, after further deliberation it was unanimously voted: Firstly, to allocate 186 heads to the 2 aforesaid vessels, to wit: Barbestein: 124 heads for Barbesteijn, whereof 100 Europeans and 24 Buginese; Castor en Pollux: 62 heads for Castor en Pollux, as 50 Europeans and 12 Buginese; 186 heads, as stated, not counting some others who through expiration of time will increase that number. Concerning the partition of cash and goods, the last-named vessel shall be given 1/3 and Barbestein the rest, but as for the remainder, regarding stipulating the time for departure, it was judged proper by the well-mentioned Commander to take a delay, though everything without stipulation of time owing to the absence of Castor en Pollux, until Castor en Pollux had returned, in order then, according to requirement, to make the one and the other proceed in God's name. In compliance with your Honors' always respected order to burn all such books and papers which, according to a certain report of 29 June that served in council here on the 5th of this month, were found to be completely unusable through time and illegible due to the white ant, and thereby properly and principally preserve the good and still somewhat legible ones in a condition against further decay or marks from those harmful creatures; as the same was also concluded in similar terms by the aforementioned resolution, and upon ocular inspection; and whereas by the said report it also specifically appears of what year and nature those are which are entirely useless and irreparably infected, we shall, under your Honors' respected permission, make no other mention in this than that all of them, after taking careful inspection of their invalidity in general, were burned by us and turned to ashes. The Honorable Commander gave the reasons why, during the recent session deliberating on the disposition of the ships Barbestein and Castor en Pollux, the exact date or time of their dispatch to Batavia could not be stipulated due to the absence of Castor en Pollux, which keel had already returned the following day, or on the 6th of this month, from Bassaitoor. Thus, following the proposal made on that account by the Honorable Commander in this assembly, it was determined by unanimous vote that the departure of these ships shall take place on the 10th of the coming month of August. Following this, the aforementioned Honorable Commander pointed out to the council that prudence and regulations alike required that the vessels undertaking the voyage to Bassoura be provided with one or more experienced navigators; and considering that upon the departure of Barbestein and Castor en Pollux, one would be devoid of such a person for that service, His Honor proposed to place the chief mate of Castor en Pollux, named Bernardus Heijmans, onto the small ship Elsbroek, since that small vessel, in accordance with our recent resolution mentioned above, is to be dispatched thither, and that this pilot had gained at least some experience on those waters during his recent voyage. In exchange, the chief mate of Elsbroek, Van Alphen, could transfer to Castor en Pollux in place of the first-mentioned. All of which having been taken into consideration by the council, it was generally agreed to let this exchange take place in the manner described above.
