645 From Persia under date 23 September 1734 expenses incurred by the originally. as on the occasion of the cruise undertaken by the vessel Elsbroek to the Islands Reijs, Congo etcetera, as appears from our resolutions of 7 and 18 May passed, and by the report of the master navigating the said vessel, Gijsbert Hageman, in session on the 5th of this month concerning his actions, circumstantially shown, as well as regarding the launch of the ship Castor en Pollux, purser from which by resolution of 13 June last dispatched to the convoy of the Duke Mhamet Lettief Chan to the aforementioned Islands; on hire of vessels, interpreter and pilot money disbursed in cash by the purser, amounting together to 1305 mamudis or 554 florins, 12 stuivers, 8 penningen, all to be observed in his submitted Specification of such expenses as were incurred regarding the expedition of the ships Elsbroek, and Castor en Pollux, to the Island Reijs, Bassaidoor, Congo, etcetera, since 31 April until 6 July thereafter, and by the undersigned were paid, namely for a large native vessel that on 13 April in company of the vessel Elsbroek departed from this roadstead, and on 18 May on hire. there, From Persia under date 23 September 1734 it was resolved to said account to thereafter, with the said vessel returned here, manned with 18 natives, at 3/4 mamudis each per day, comes for 36 days to 486 mamudis. Regarding the rose water and plums, we must likewise express our regret that those little goods were delivered in such a poor condition, concerning which, however, we dare confidently assure Your Honors that, with regard to their purchase and packing here, the work has always been carried out in the required and most circumspect manner, applying all possible care in that regard, so that we cannot understand where those advanced complaints about their dilapidated state are to be laid, unless one were inclined to believe the disparaging rumors that try to persuade us that, during the further shipment of such goods from Tuticorin, etc., the rough sailors act completely improperly and roughly when loading and unloading them again, and thus in fact cause no little harm to the fragile assembly of the rose water cases and brittle bottles, but that the damage observed in that regard, for the reasons just mentioned, may remain imputed to such handling. March of the past year, sent hither via Batavia, from which it has appeared to us with particular regret that Your Honors had not yet received any more recent serviceable reports from us than those of 30 April anno 1730, which, among other fatalities of this directorate, has been caused now for such an unusual time, as if inseparable, by the sad wrecking of the ship Borsselen in anno 1731 on the coast of Mallabaar; yet we wish from our hearts that already long ago, or shortly after the dispatch of Your Honors' latest letters mentioned above, Your Honors may have been served not only with the copy of our missive dated 15 May anno 1731, sent from here by the very same unfortunate vessel, but also with that which we allowed to go out in duplicate at the same time for delivery on 19 July anno 1732 via the ships Schoonauwen and Hopvogel. That the successive fulfillment by Your Honors of the old requisition of 30 April 1730 aforementioned until now, and that the latest provision also had to take place in like manner, cannot in fact, when one takes serious notice of it, tend to the benefit of the Honorable Company or bring it about, given the state of this afflicted directorate, where trade has declined due to the still daily aggravating and imminent troubles throughout this realm, and particularly not when, through the scarce vent of most types of the received linens, which, increasing through the successive shipments in the manner aforesaid, remain occupying the warehouses here to our disadvantage. From Persia under date 23 September A:o 1734, 7 November and 10 December last year, as well as 16 and 24 February of this current year, and the same received on 15 January by the English ship Nieuw Castle, 28 ditto by the Company's small yacht Elsbroek, the 1st of May by the British small vessels the Sarah Galley and boyer, the first accompanied by 3 packets from Ceylon, Coromandel, as well as Mocha, with yet a small chest belonging to the packet of the second-mentioned government, beside the copy letters from your Right Honorable Commandment to the lords masters in the fatherland and to their High Mightinesses at Batavia, charted of four diverse dates. With the second we found a fatherland and Coromandel packet with the second chest, and lastly two packets of fatherland writings with the 3rd and 4th, for which taken trouble and good dispatch we offer our grateful acknowledgment. We heartily wished we might find ourselves in a position to be able completely to satisfy your Right Honorable received demand by your last and hereinbefore-mentioned letters, but the present times and circumstances withholding this ability from us, your Right Honorable will please be pleased to accept the sending only of 8 chests of rosewater, according to the enclosed small invoice to the amount of ƒ418: 6:— and to discharge this directorship thereof; this also further accompanying the copies of our humble fatherland and Batavia advices under 6 February last, dispatched to their High Mightinesses, so that your Right Honorable, if you please, might observe the true condition of this realm, still bobbing in misery, as well as how we, regarding the known 20 chests of wine, still remain looking forward to the requested honored order of the aforementioned their High Mightinesses. From Persia, dated 23 September 1734 will bring about a desired success in time, if only merchants appear, which God grant. Meanwhile, we have seen with satisfaction from Your Honours' pleasant latest letter mentioned above how, shortly after the report arrived of the defeat of the Persians near Baghdad, Your Honours were able to dispose of 725 lb of nutmegs, and 175 lb of cinnamon at the fixed price, item 100 pieces of chintz bedspreads at 45 mahmudis or ƒ19:2:8 a piece, and thus with barely 62 percent profit. On the contrary, however, it is very painful to us that the closed trade books of 1733/34, of which the first set was received by us and also found to be correct in all parts, were not able to raise any more profit than a very small amount of ƒ4574:19:8, whereas the general expenses, on the other hand, were ƒ8253:10:—. Thus it becomes apparent that Your Honours' residency has fallen behind by the said books in an amount of ƒ3678:10:8. However, the unprecedented troubles and the heavily oppressive war being the prime cause thereof, one has had to bear it with Your Honours, the more so because these fatal events did not depend on us, nor could they be prevented. And therefore we hope for the future from the Almighty that it may go more blessedly with the sale of the remaining stock listed in Your Honours' aforementioned letter, consisting of 873½ lb of nutmegs 3689 lb of fine Ceylon cinnamon 770 lb of mace, and 360 pieces of chintz bedspreads, as well as with the merchandise now arriving in general. Regarding the cinnamon and mace set down here above, it will appear to Your Honours from the aforementioned extract of the resolution of 11 September that in case they might still be unsaleable, they must be remitted by these shipments to prevent further loss to the Honourable Company through longer retention there, on this vessel, in order to be able to act therewith here according to findings and the opportunity of the time. Conforming ourselves to this, Your Honours will also find among the annexes of this letter another extract from our estimates drawn up there on 31 December, serving to show how, for the reasons given and without exceeding them, the disbursed monies were approved by us, which fell under the representations of the former Governor-General, the High and Noble Lord Mr Diderik Durven, and his illustrious successor, the Right Honourable and Highly Esteemed Lord Mr Dirk van Cloon, amounting to ƒ669:7:8. Likewise that which was paid to the hired Armenian soldiery for 36 days, or from 3 April to 18 May, for the security of the Company's residence, goods, and Your Honours' person, to the amount of ƒ688:18:—, as having been considered an urgent precaution; and also the gift of ƒ352:15:— to the new lieutenant-governor after a paid visit, for to deviate from the customs of the land would, according to all experience, no matter how much the necessary economy is recommended, cause only resentment with such a man and his adherents. But on the other hand, that of the assistant Willem Slaars has been debited for the remainder of ƒ181:1:— according to the received receipt as per custom. And since we are speaking of the same, Your Honours are informed that at the frequently mentioned meeting of 11 October regarding him, it was approved to let him return there to his former employment, and upon receipt of this letter to transfer that which is incumbent upon the second in command there and observed by him in the interim, to the junior merchant chosen for that purpose, Abraham van Suchtelen. It has been deduced, and in our humble opinion requires Your Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed Illustrious attention, to let this accompany it, intending, as soon as another opportunity presents itself, likewise to dispatch the duplicate together with whatever might occur in the interim, in order to be able to hope with tranquility that at least one of the two, although the best is equally wished for both, may enjoy the good fortune of arriving properly, commending ourselves thereto in all humility; so we further take the liberty to begin the occurrences since that time with the report concerning the trade, and what profit has been found thereby in the most recently closed book-year ending ultimo August, the entire turnover of merchandise having yielded in one full year at the main office according to the books, after deducting 1 per cent brokerage, an advance of f 230335:15:—, which is diminished to f 168087:3:— in the net return arriving in copy; at the Bassoura office, in that book-year according to the enclosed copy return, a profit was made of f 3210:2:8; and after the aforementioned ultimo August, up to the 11th of this month, through Heaven's blessing, we have been able to calculate on the realized sale of goods at this place a gross profit of f 84841:17:—, as the same is to be found reviewed in the copy of that shown turnover, living in humble hope that the same, after the present troubled state of the realm and ruined state of commerce, in comparison with former flourishing times, may yet bring Your Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed worships as much satisfaction as it gives us, respectfully speaking, wonder that any trade is still being conducted. And notwithstanding that, through incoming reports in the month of December of last year, and on the 14th of this month, some prospect presented itself toward the restoration of the King's throne by one Mahomed Baloots, who abandoned Thamas Coelie Chan's side in order with his troops to deliver the said monarch from his exile, according to the pretended claim that is reasonably supposed thereof from various brought reports; but all these, and some other accounts, both of the highest mentioned prince, the usurper Thamas Coelie Chan, and the newly invented rebellion of Mahomed Baloots, insofar as they can be investigated, examined, and reflected upon, one finds in the latter a cunning to fish in troubled waters according to the old proverb, considering that he has joined himself at once with the greatest rebels against His Majesty, named Sjeeg Agmed Madennie, to push through his enterprise; among the appendices accompanying this is a copy translation dated the 23rd of the said month of December from Kirman, received locally from the Company's wool factor Auwannees, showing thereby an ill treatment of the King caused by Mahomed Baloots's desertion from Thamas Coelie Can; and as it appears that if the latter remains accompanied by an equally lasting fortunate progress in his advances against the Turk, it is very easily deduced therefrom that, as he triumphs, he will still be capable of keeping the King in confinement, and also in time to prevail over such rebellious vassals as Mahomed Balootschan has declared himself to be; for all such reasons and motives as appear more broadly in the appendices, and will also become evident hereafter in this letter, that for the present one can make no certain reliance that this realm will be ruled by a sovereign without internal strife and confusion, and consequently no boom in trade will be experienced, for everywhere is in turmoil, and the present condition in Ispahan and Kirman caused by Mahoemet Baloeds Chan, as well as the design which the common birds of prey, the Baluchis, have to come and plunder this city and the lowlands again, promises absolutely no good; and notwithstanding that some of those reports are doubted, it is nevertheless a certain truth that the merchant will thereby remain deterred from purchasing any merchandise, especially if the last-mentioned rabble should come down this way; and it would be considerably worse if the frequently mentioned Mahamed Boloets, with his followers, took to flight and plundering, since, being supplied mostly with national weapons and powerful enough, he could totally ruin everything around here; still hoping for the best in this regard, and in order not to be too tedious herein, we shall, in hope of an honored favorable interpretation, presume the honor to mention briefly the condition in Turkey, and first of all dutifully say regarding the war that the above-mentioned Thamas Coelie Chan, after having encountered several disadvantageous engagements with the Turkish troops near Bagdad and thereabouts, as shown to our humble, highly mentioned Supreme Indian Government above-mentioned, has nevertheless brought matters so far that the Ottoman military force, through a capital defeat, has been exceptionally diminished, dispirited, and for the greatest part put to flight, whereby the city of Bagdad is brought into dire straits, and, if the reports on 21 and 28 December, received through the English and the former with a Moorish skipper, merit any credit, could not hold out long with Bassoura, but would be compelled to surrender; of this, a Roman Catholic father named Don Joan, arrived with an English vessel from Bassoura in 7 days, and having been highly regarded with the Turkish general Topal Osman Pasha in the army, has given a remarkable account of the great defeat by

From Persia, dated 23 September 1734 Living in hope, as we have not exceeded custom and usage, that Your Right Honourables and the Gamron Council will be pleased favourably to approve our actions, we now pray the same of Your Right Honourable, Right Wise, and Most Respected Honours, as we can assure Your Right Honourable, Right Wise, and Most Respected Honours that nothing was given away beyond utmost necessity; and since on the 26th of the past month of March two of the Company's Buginese servants from the ship Castor and Pollux ran away and quit their service through desertion, intending to enter the service of this local population, but upon our strong and urgent request to prevent more harmful consequences, matters were so far settled that these fellows were sent back home to us by the Regent, we having promised and assured, however, not to be permitted or required to punish their committed crime, and we having had to present the bringers to that end with a small sum of ƒ 42:10:—, we therefore hope, as well as for the aforementioned given to certain lesser servants of the Regents to the sum of ƒ 55:5:—, to obtain in due time the highly esteemed approval. Having respectfully promised Your Right Honourable, Right Wise, and Most Respected Honours hereinbefore to give further news regarding the war, we shall, in fulfillment thereof and in continuation of what Your Right Honourable, Right Wise, and Most Respected Honours will find mentioned in the currently departing Gamron missive regarding this, state that after Thamas Chan had by surprise defeated and scattered the Turkish army under the command of General Topal Osman Pasha near Samarra, he directly thereupon advanced again with his whole force before Baghdad and besieged that city. But having learned of the movement of one Mhamet Bolootch Chan to restore the deposed King Thamas to the throne (as Your Right Honourable, Right Wise, and Most Respected Honours will find mentioned in the Gamron writings), he was said at the same time to have sent commissioners inside to offer peace to Achmed Pasha if he would agree to persuade his court to observe the articles of peace established in the times of the Turkish Emperor Murad and the Persian Shah Safi (in accordance with which the Turks must restore to the Persians all the conquests they had made in the latest internal troubles). This having been accepted by Achmed Pasha, and one hundred days having been granted to one another not to commit hostilities in order to obtain an answer from the court of Constantinople, Thamas Qoli Chan, around the middle of the month of December of the recently past year, broke camp from before Baghdad and marched directly against his enemy, the aforementioned Mhamed Bolootch Chan (who was then staying in and near Shiraz to reinforce his army), to confront him. Meanwhile, we have learned that these two parties met each other near Shiraz and engaged in battle, wherein Thamas Qoli Chan emerged victorious, and Mhamed Bolootch Chan and his men had to seek a safe retreat. But having joined with the well-known Sheikh Achmed Medanie, this united force is said to have subsequently completely defeated Thamas Qoli Chan's dispatched troops on two different occasions and held the field on that side, while Thamas Qoli Chan has marched to Isfahan, without anyone knowing to what end other than some rumours which allege it is to restore the dethroned Shah Thamas to the throne, which is to be wished for and prayed from Heaven, so that the nearly entirely lost empire of Persia may catch its breath again and trade may flourish as before. It is now believed that the Turkish court is inclined towards peace, but not on the conditions of Thamas Qoli Chan, but rather on the terms as concluded by the lately dethroned King Thamas, namely that the Porte shall retain for itself all the places
