From Persia under date 23 September Anno 1739 places situated on the other side of the river Arax, and that a legitimate heir of the Shah ascended the throne to ratify the articles, or whether they would rather continue the war, for which purpose a powerful army already stands prepared near Diyarbakir and Mosul under the command of Abdul Pasha, descendant of the notorious Koprulu, to act offensively and defensively; what will now come of this, time will tell, as we are presently unable to elucidate Your Right Honourable, Highly Esteemed, and Highly Respected sirs by true reports in that regard. Right Honourable, Highborn Sir, Under the dates of 23 March and 4 June 1730, we had the honour, in answer to Your Excellency's respected letter of the date 20 December of the previous year, in all respect to write to Your Excellency over Aleppo, 725 - From Persia under date 23 September 1734 over Aleppo to Your Excellency. Although we do not doubt its good delivery through the care of the former Aleppo consul, the Honourable Daniel Bouwmeester, nevertheless, for greater assurance, the copies thereof accompany this, so that if the originals should, through some unexpected accident, have been lost, they may serve in their place. 727 From Persia dated 23 7ber: 1734 to check his intention, whereafter, according to reports received, he had indeed boldly scattered and put his adversary to flight. But having subsequently united with some rebellious Arabs, Agwarens, and other peoples of the empire, he has on two diverse occasions so battered the troops of Thamas Chan that he kept the field, and as it appears, Thamascan with much fear among them. In the meantime, nothing is currently heard with certainty of the last-named, except that wherever he has marched through and been, he has ruined the country and inhabitants in a violent manner, and also a rumor as if he had gone to Spahan in order to restore the dethroned king to his seat there again, which is to be wished. Here everything is in peace and quiet, and trade fairly prosperous; and a caravan which departed over the deserts via Aleppo carries, besides some heavy goods, a considerable parcel of 500 bales of diverse Indian linens thither. Since the first undersigned is to depart from here shortly via Gamron, he cannot omit to request Your Excellency to have the honor of being permitted to continue the friendly correspondence with Your Excellency from there, and the Honorable Mr. George Gutchi, who will remain here as first resident, on the contrary presents his service and very respectfully begs Your Excellency for your highly valued favor and goodwill. While we, with Your Excellency's esteemed permission, conclude this with the wishing of all desirable prosperities, subscribing in humble greeting with high esteem and respect. Noble Sir, The 729 From Persia dated 23 7ber: 1734 Having received on the 17th of the last expired month of March from the gentlemen from Gamron a small packet of writings for Your Honour, wherein is enclosed a packet under Pa. A for our Right Honorable Lords and Masters, as well as a missive for His Excellency Mr. Cornelis Calkoen at Constantinople, we take the liberty herewith to send them to Your Honour and to request you kindly to forward the same, as well as what we have further added for the Right Honorable Directors of the General United East India Company, our masters, and to the aforementioned Mr. Ambassador Calkoen, by the most secure means of address, in doing which you will highly oblige us and find us ready for return service. For the present, everything here is in peace and quiet, and trade reasonably well; but if one may continue to enjoy the peace, we hope it will improve further. With the caravan now departing from here, besides a few costly goods, well 500 bales of linens are being carried. We wish that the same may find a good market, in order to encourage the merchant, who for some time has suffered only damage, and bring him to recovery. From Persia dated 23 7ber: Anno 1735 Of Thamas Coulie Chan nothing is heard at present with certainty; it is only claimed that after he had made peace with Achmed Bassia at Bagdaet, he marched with all his might against one of his defectors, Mhamed Baeloedschan, in order to prevent his intention, namely to raise followers and restore the dethroned king, and having overtaken him, had defeated him near Chiraas and put him to flight. But having afterward united with some other malcontents and rebels, he has on two diverse occasions again defeated the troops sent by Thamas Coulie Chan, and that he on the one hand, and Thamas Coelie Chan on the other hand, God help us, miserably ruin the country and the poor inhabitants. Regarding the peace with the Porte, we can learn nothing accurately here, some claiming that it has been accepted, and others on the contrary saying that strong preparations are being made to continue the war, which is not to be wished. Persia under date 23 September 1734 From The English ship the Fame, having the intention to sail to Your Honours' directorship, and notice thereof having been brought to us, we could not let this opportunity pass to send Your Honours herewith a copy of our respectful letters, dated 14 and 30 March of this past year, in order to be able to refer thereto with greater peace of mind. Added thereto for company is the copy of our humble letter of 30 September, with an addendum of the ultimate of November of the said year, presented per the ships the Jacoba and the Windhout to their High Noble Great Respectabilities at Batavia, to the end that Your Honours may be served with all that has passed in this confused region, concerning the trade as well as other material matters. Since then, we have been informed of the progress that the rebel Thamas Coelie Chan has made against the Turk, that through three defeats, and the loss of their generalissimo, one Topal Osman, Honourable, Strict, Valiant, Prudent, Far-sighted and Very Generous Sir and Honourable Sirs, one compelled - 733 From Persia under date 23 September 1734 compelled, and to evacuate his victorious troops, which however does not prevent the cabals and conspiracies forged against that tyrant by some disgruntled persons, and openly begun by one Mhamed Boloeds and other rebels, but what will finally become of all this will have to be awaited from time. To 73 735 From Persia under date 23 September 1734 To the authorities of the Honourable Company's Yacht ship Elsbroek Cusam Saom Discret The letter from the shipmaster Gijsbert Hageman, dated off the island of Keijs the 26 May of the past year, was duly received by me on the 29th thereafter, from which was seen with satisfaction the receipt of my letters to him dispatched per the English Captain Louis, and that which he communicates further concerning the actions of the English Captain Ioaklij, which agrees with the reports of the English gentlemen, particularly the suspicion regarding the people of Sjeeg Rasjet, which, appearing unfounded to His Excellency Mhamed Lettieff Chan, has moved that duke to make such a request to me on that account as the accompanying translation will show Your Honours, and which you are most strictly ordered [illegible] From Persia: under date 23 September 1734 herewith, according to its form and contents, to follow up and carry into execution just as if that which is contained therein had been ordered directly by me to you by ordinance, or were inserted herein word for word, with this understanding nevertheless that you shall have to act in everything concerning this communicatively with the English captains, and not undertake anything separately and without previously, after preceding ripe deliberation with them, having resolved and decreed in accordance; which I recommend to you with all the more emphasis and seriousness, as the agreement entered into with the English gentlemen here in this respect, and the good harmony maintained with them to this day, require such. Since the death of the prominent Moorish merchant Mia Iha Metalie during his detention without exact investigation will certainly not be laid directly at the door of the Mogul ruler, or at least not the departed Imperial Chancellor, the old prince Nesaam-ul-Mulk, just as the veneer of a good government has been drawn toward civilities by the greed inherent to this nation, although we nevertheless remain unmolested and have received full restitution of the Honorable Company's disbursed monies, as Your Honors will be able to see in greater detail, if you please, from our humble advices under dates of 15 and 30 April of this year dispatched to Her Right Honorable the High Indian Government at Batavia, as well as what further occurred in this directorship up to the said date, since copies thereof are presented herewith, and attached thereto such writings as were sent with the further humble letter of the 4th instant via Malacca, item the letters to Bengal and Cochin to the ministers, on 10 and 17 June, as well as the 24th of this month, in the expectation that the packets will be safely delivered, principally to the Commander and Council at Malabar, in order that Their Honors, gaining knowledge of the progress that the Sewas, combined with Angria, have made against the strongholds of the Prince Sidie Sacoetchan, may in good time devise such precautions as they shall find necessary to keep the Company's ships, which are sent via that command to Your Honors' directorship, Mocha, and Surat from Batavia, out of danger if possible. From Persia under date 23 September Anno 1734 Persia To the Honorable Leendert de Cleen Senior Merchant and Commander over the Honorable Company's interests in that realm, together with the Council Honorable Sir and Friends Under date 28 August we had prepared such writings to Your Honors to send with the small ship de Swaluw along with its annexes according to the register, as the duplicate thereof enclosed herewith in the absence of the original, which however I hope will not show, and by further copy of the endorsement on 28 September the reasons why the said letter could not be dispatched earlier, and the annexed papers became incomplete. Now through the offered readiness of the English President Mr. Henry Lowther, who is about to depart for Bombay, an opportunity was obtained to prepare this follow-up letter in all haste, solely to accompany the duplicate of the aforementioned letters with the writings that had to be detained here, not doubting that when the gentleman arrives at the said fortress he will grant the further address with such vessel as lies ready there to undertake the voyage to your parts. Meanwhile at this place nothing else of importance has occurred beyond what we have already communicated, other than that the lord Qamar-ud-Din Khan, first minister of state of the Mughal court, has returned again to Delhi to the monarch, and to date no new governor has arrived in the province of Gujarat, but it is administered by the deputy of the Maharaja Abhai Singh, ruler of Jodhpur, who has departed for his country, who having not much power with him worsens the decay more and more, without anyone yet rightly knowing who will appear for redress to bring these lower lands into better peace, truly lamentable not only for the inhabitants but even for strangers who come here to market. If no speedy change comes, the trade in this directorate is also finished. Nevertheless hoping for the best, we further inform Your Honors that from the aforementioned English Chief we have received with much joy that the small ship de Windhond has been brought back again to the Gamron roadstead by the crew still remaining thereon and thus undoubtedly into Your Honors' hands, and we are thereby freed from making further attempts to recover it. The agent of the ruler Sidi Yaqut Khan, residing here, is ready to sail to depart with some vessels to the aid of his master, but it is feared that if the former state Chancellor the lord Nizam-ul-Mulk sends no auxiliary troops thither, the said Sidi will not well be able to regain the lost places. All of them departed by English vessels via Bombay. We were frustrated in the dispatch of the first dated missive by the detention of the small ship de Swaluw, which was nonetheless sent without annexes by the promised care of the English President Mr. Henry Lowther via the overland route to Bombay, to be forwarded further from there. The third was taken along by that gentleman himself to that government. What the reasons for the non-delivery are we do not know, yet we remain confident that both will indeed be delivered; if not, the aforementioned copies may serve in their stead. And as regards the annexes belonging thereto, we shall say no other in this than that what was respectfully reported to to the High Government is now sent to Your Honors in two different letters under date 4 August anno passado and 20 March current. Besides the state of present affairs in the Mughal empire, there is described therein the villainous abduction of the yacht de Windhond with the means we were obliged by duty to employ to regain it. It is a desired outcome that those remaining on it sought their own place. Among the unfaithful are often upright servants. Time and occasion compel those who are in the forest to howl with the wolves, and we have thereby remained freed from pursuing our begun efforts any further. After the departure of our two letters dated 7 November and 10 December of the past year, as well by the English ship Nieuw Kessel as the Company's vessel Elsbroek, the ships Jacoba and De Winthout were seen appearing in this roadstead on the last day of December of the said year, whose officers also duly delivered to us Your Honour's agreeable letter dated the ultimate of September, but only dispatched on the 30th of November following. And whereas inside of the same were also found two packets of writings addressed to the Ceylon and Coromandel ministers, the same, together with the goods belonging thereto, have been sent to Ceylon by our yacht Anna Catharina, with a serviceable request to the Honourable Commissioner Jacob Christiaan Pielat and the Honourable Governor Mr. Diderik van Domburg, together with the Council, to grant transport thither for that which belongs to Coromandel at the first good opportunity; while we hereby kindly thank Your Honour for the provision of 8 cases of rose water for the service of this Commandery, and no less for your promise made to satisfy, upon receipt, all that is still missing from our requisition sent over on 2 January of the past year by the ship Barbeszeijn; as also for sending hither the copy of the letter dispatched to Their Excellencies the High Indian Government at Batavia under date of the ultimate of September aforesaid, together with the muster roll of the wrecked ship Borsselen, and all the copy accounts of the bookkeeper Jan Jacob Korsgens. 773 From Persia under date 23 September 1734. 781 From Persia, dated 23 September, Anno 1734. still in the land of the living, and has arrived from Asserav to Sari, also a small place in Maseenderoen and situated close to Casbien, with permission from the duke, in order to recover his former health through the change of air; and for his use, also by order of the Lord Thamas Chan some time ago, a quantity of rich and medium fabrics and chintzes and more have been sent thither from here, which makes everyone among the King's faction believe that the duke does not have such ill intentions for that prince as is commonly thought, and that his restoration must ultimately, indeed even in a short time, follow. This is said mainly for the reason that the Lors, to the number of 24000 households, have been transported to Gorassan, and he, Thamas Chan, likewise having neatly packed away all the best goods, both those stolen from one and another and those still found here in the palace, has sent them to those regions with his Afshar or Gorassan family, together with all the households of the grandees in his service, writers, soldiers recruited here, and inclusive of those of the present governor. Thus, that restoration being considered certain by many for that reason and finally coming to pass, the same will nevertheless be nothing other than a king of very few and entirely ruined subjects and places. From Persia, dated 23 September, Anno 1734. places; besides which, it is also assured that he has ceded the entire province of Gilan, where the plague now rages severely, to the much-mentioned duke, whereby he will for a long time be unable to undertake anything against his so ungrateful subject. In the meantime, the Boelaeds Mahmed Chan, after having helped many others into the greatest misery in the world, has finally played his own part very poorly; for on the 16th of the recently passed month of June, having been brought here in irons with 2 others, namely another Boelaeds his vizier or steward, and his wife's brother, together with the Achwaar Dellawer, murderer of the junior merchant Laan, they had both his eyes gouged out with a pointed knife on the following day, and beheaded the other two, which favor he had also requested for himself; however, such was not permitted to happen, but he died a few days thereafter in his prison. Meanwhile, requesting Your Honours that we may very humbly refer you to the accompanying extract from our daily register regarding the further current news, we shall nevertheless still mention in this letter that on the 28th of May last, From Persia, dated 23 September, Anno 1734. last, the Russian ambassador Galietskien made his entry into this city, and having sent word of this to us, and also that the English had prepared themselves to go and welcome that gentleman, we nevertheless, with permission from the duke, also rode out to meet him outside the city; who having then entered with a retinue of fully 120 Muscovites, was conducted to the audience with the said duke on the 2nd and 5th of June past. But after all efforts exerted, we have not been able to learn what his embassy may properly consist of; though as is generally said, his mission hither is for nothing other than to animate this duke against the Turks, that he must continue the war with them, promising him thereby that he shall win mountains of gold; and this is presumed the more because the same has followed the Persian army with 55 persons, having left the remainder of his suite here, in order to assist the Lord Thamas Chan in everything with counsel and deed. 789 From Persia, dated 23 September Anno 1734 Honorable, valiant, highly esteemed gentlemen, and consequently also Your Noblenesses, may take complete pleasure therein; at least we shall apply everything thereto that our human ability, according to the condition of the times and the readiest mercantile means, will allow us, especially if the apparent success of the times, which have already changed for the better in this quarter, may continue under Heaven's blessing, for which is heartily prayed, so that we may always acknowledge and constantly remember the received benefits from our highly respected lords and masters through the fruits of our due vigilance and faithful servitude, as true obligors and sincere servants. Pursuant to Your Noblenesses' honored letter regarding the cloths and broadcloths sent along for trial, inquiry has been made regarding their debit or non-debit, and it has been learned that not only the last-mentioned extra coarse, but also the 32 half pieces of fine ditto, will in time still be convertible with some, though certainly no high, profits; and regarding the chintz ambersia, moeramath, and boutidaer, some good prospects have also been presented to us, but the contrary concerning the bedspreads and gingham pinas, which for that reason and to avoid useless toll charges have, according to honored orders, been left on board ship to be sent back, the amount of the aforementioned invoice consequently being reduced thereby to ƒ2139:11:1, since the said bedspreads cost ƒ5713:4:8 and gingham pinas ƒ431:6:—, thus together a sum of ƒ6144:10:8. We shall use as an instructive guideline the extract of the Gamron resolution dated 11 September of the past year sent to us previously, in order to regulate in the sale, according to the well-founded intention, not only the four main spices but also all other types of merchandise to the true content of each contracted specie, so that Your Noblenesses may derive as much pleasure in that future business as we were pleased to observe regarding the sale of goods from our then meager remaining stock on hand, which then also, as we quite fervently hope, will properly soothe the pain that Your Noblenesses felt regarding the closing of our trade books of 1732/33 with very meager profits of ƒ4574:19:8, or to speak more properly, a deficit of ƒ3678:10:8, which was rightly to be attributed to the fatalities that war, wherever it is waged, often produces, as well as the further consequences that contributed thereto; yet we live in hope that with the newly arrived cargo matters will turn out somewhat more advantageously than happened with the remainder still in the warehouse of 3520 lb or 44 bales of cinnamon and 770 lb or 5 sacks of mace. From Persia under date 23 September anno 1734 favorably showing an inclination toward ratification of the peace made by Achmed Pasha at Baghdad, but nevertheless with the addition and removal of some articles which Thamas Kouli Khan had caused to be inserted into that treaty according to his own arbitrary will, and then furthermore that the said Persian general will formally have to declare in whose name and to whose favor that weighty matter of peace shall be solemnized, as they in no way pretend to enter into the least formality with that upstart, as he entitles himself under the name of Nezar Kouli, but rather to apply everything that may contribute to a mutually satisfactory alliance between His Ottoman Majesty and His Persian Majesty, the true King Thamas Khan; to which end, and so that this might be effected with the most illustrious ceremonial, a numerous army of fully 200,000 men has been brought in full arms and readiness by the Porte, and the supreme command thereof entrusted to the renowned Koprulu Oglu Pasha, who, as plenipotentiary on behalf of the Ottoman monarch, will have to effect that remarkable expedition either in front of his army or between the two armies, or else, upon meeting any expiration obstacles, de facto and in plano give battle and pursue them to utter destruction. What the truth of this may be now or will become in the future, one must defer to time for decision; at least we hope that they may both incline to dear concord. 801 Anno 1734 From Persia under date 23 September concord may incline, and reason may so govern them that both princes, through the same industry, may be united into an unshakable bond of peace, for the well-being and respite of both their subjects in general, the so long-desired flourishing of trade for the re-establishment of the merchants in particular, and further to the satisfaction of each and every one who finds himself interested therein for his share, but especially our true, most benevolent refuge, the Honorable East India Company, for which we are bound to watch to the utmost with service and life; besides the successive notes in our daily narrative, which also goes out in copy for inspection from date the first of October of the past year to the ultimate of April last, we shall here further cite as a notable event how on the 10th of this month an Alif Effendi arrived in loco, sent hither by Achmet Pasha of Baghdad as musselim or lieutenant, with orders not only to demand an accounting from the former governor Ibrahim Kahya regarding his government and revenues, but even to strangle the same after having performed this task; and this, as is alleged, because this condemned man, having been summoned to the court at Constantinople, might possibly have presented a multitude of complaints there to the charge of Achmed Pasha, which could well make him suspect to the Horde itself; wherefore his questioning conscience caused him to consider this precaution, in order to prevent his own ruin by the massacre of the other; yet.
