1368 Persia under date 23 September 1734 From to make full for the residents at Bassoura, then had told him that he should wait until evening because these two half leagers were not yet ready, which he had to take with him, which the appearer had then done, and received the same in the evening, when he had noticed that the bottom of the pipe was very leaky and that the whole vessel was old, of which he had also immediately given the necessary notice to the purser, who then sent the coopers from this shore to make the same tight and furthermore had it carried into the boat, with which he, the mate, intended to go on board, but that the wind had then begun to blow so strongly from the west-southwest that the boat was thereby knocked off its grapnel and all at once was driven by the wind onto the sea beach, became full of water, whereby the bottom of the aforesaid half leager had yielded a good three finger-breadths inwards due to the laboring of the boat, and the wine that was inside it came to turn into salt water, just as everything that was in the boat was driven out of it and washed ashore, except the two aforementioned half leagers, which he, the appearer, declares after all possible and applied effort to have been utterly unable to preserve from the aforesaid damage caused to it by weather and wind. All that is written above the appearer testifies to contain the upright and sincere truth, which he also remains prepared to confirm under oath at all times if required. Today, the 3rd of March 1734: Appeared before me, Jacob Diepenbach, sworn clerk at the Gamron secretariat, under the authority of the Honorable Leendert de Cleen, senior merchant and commander of this Persian directorate, present the witnesses to be mentioned hereafter, the valiant skipper Gijsbert Hageman, commanding the Company's vessel Lesbroek lying here in the roads, who handed over to me, the sworn clerk, a certain sea protest executed on the voyage hither on the 31st of October 1733, with the request to make the same an instrument in due form, which is done in this manner by recording the said protest in the protocol, which reads word for word as follows: We the undersigned, Gerbrand de Jong and Josias Ruts, both second mates, Jan Belhiel, boatswain, Jan Clooster, boatswain's mate, and Stephanus Lapperson, gunner, all in the service of the Honorable Company, stationed on the ship Elsbroek, declare at the request of the officers of the said vessel that after the calking was done between decks, the same was watered and found tight, and likewise the second deck, and also calked all around From Persia under date 23 September 1734 all around calked, and having put out to sea, the hatches were battened down tight with new tarpaulins, and also new mast-coats around the mast, and the grating on the deck provided with double tarpaulins; but due to heavy laboring and a rough, hollow southern sea, the said keel above water became very leaky, so that with tubs and buckets we caught the water against the ship's side, and kept it as dry as was humanly possible in the lower deck with swabs, having to pump every two to three glasses, as during that time we got 10, 12, and 13 inches at the pumps; so that in case any goods of the Company's cargo might have become wet, the same has nevertheless not occurred through any neglect of our ship's officers. From Persia under date 23 September 1734 Gerbrand d'Jong, second mate, Josias Ruts, ditto, Jan Clooster, boatswain's mate, and Martijn Carstens, boatswain's mate's assistant, all appointed in that capacity on the Company's vessel Elsbroek, who, at the requisition of the skipper Gijsbert Hageman, likewise appointed on that ship, all together and each of them in particular declared it to be true and truthful that, at this roadstead during the unloading of the hold in the same, they discovered that the rice at both waterways of the side was very wet and suffocated, the quantity of which consists of 1373 pounds, and also some 50 to 60 canassers of candy and powder sugar were hereby turned to syrup, and 3 of the same, namely 2 powder and 1 candy, were completely leaking away, presuming this notoriously must have been caused during the voyage hither by the considerably heavy laboring of the said vessel, whereby a heavy, great leakage arose at the said waterways, which they had noticed occasionally during the voyage, but against which all precautions taken could avail nothing, because the leakage originated from the outside and also needed to be stopped from there, which, due to the rolling of the ship at sea, was impossible to have done as required. The appearers furthermore gave as their reason of knowledge that everything contained in the aforesaid terms is the upright, sincere truth, which they remain ready at all times, if required, to confirm by oath. From Persia under date 23 September 1734 1377 On this day, the 4th of March 1734 Appeared before me, Jacob Diepenbag, First Sworn Clerk of this Gamron secretariat, under the authority of the Honorable Leendert d'Cleen, senior merchant and director of this Persian Directorate, in the presence of the witnesses to be named hereafter, the persons Jan Belhiel, boatswain, Stephanus Lapperson, gunner, and Jan Clooster, boatswain's mate, all serving in that function and for that purpose on the ship Elsbroek lying here at the roadstead, who, at the requisition of the skipper Gijsbert Hageman, likewise appointed on the said vessel, certified and declared it to be true and truthful that, on the 15th of February last, being commanded by the said skipper, they went into the water-hold of the aforesaid vessel in order to break open the same and bring forth some empty water casks from it to fill them again with fresh water. Arriving there and having brought up some of the said water casks, among which some other casks with sweet oil and vinegar for the voyage from Batavia, given as rations for the crew, also had to be stowed because the provision room was full, they, upon inspection, discovered an aam of sweet oil of the said rations to be entirely empty and leaked out. Which, being brought up and into daylight, was found to have been caused by two staves of the said cask that were completely broken and had separated from each other. Furthermore, the appearers declared that upon further investigation they saw, as far as it appeared to them, that the stowage was accurately attended to according to the custom of ship's lading and had been provided with dunnage in such a manner that sufficient play was observed under it and consequently the bilge was securely tiered. Finally, they the deponents declared in like manner how they also on the 14th of the said month of February of the named year and on the said voyage at the height, by estimate 2 miles from the Slangen Island, in the morning during the day watch with the flood, around the lifting of their small bower anchor, which was so powerfully sucked into the ground that first the messenger had broken to pieces upon it, and thereafter the purchase was used to lift the said anchor, the rope of which, being a virgin rope, came to break, and thus the anchor with 12 to 14 fathoms of rope remained in the ground, after which, through all seamanship practices and practiced vigilance, there was no chance, both due to strong currents as the water was then underwater

However, Your Honour can take for your information and guidance the trade books of this office, where Your Honour will be able to find what the Company's merchandise, which is usually brought on the Company's account, has been successively sold for. Thus having briefly dealt with the sale of merchandise, it will also be useful to say what the returns must consist of. These have always been in cash, namely European gold ducats, Spanish reals, and imperial dollars. Therefore, considering that to these two persons, who both made themselves guilty of the irresponsible abandonment of their companion, of whom the one is still charged with several already noted bad matters, and the other has shown himself not to be in his right mind, the command over the Company's precious vessels could no longer be entrusted with peace of mind, it has, with Your Noble Grand Honors' kind approval, been thought best and resolved for the greatest service of the Honorable Company, that, taking the same away from them, one shall have skipper Hoekeling sail on Haaften, and Van de Graaff on the bearer of this, to Batavia, without their having any authority to exercise on the voyage, in order that Your Noble Grand Honors may further act with regard to them, From Cape of Good Hope, the 1st of February 1734. the papers received here concerning them being sent along with this in original changes which one has been forced to make on that account on the ships Haaften and Noordwijkerhout in such manner as Your Noble Grand Honors shall be pleased to deem fit, for which reason we also have the honor to convey herewith in original to Your Noble Grand Honors all the papers, declarations, and reports received here concerning these matters, the report that was given by the mates of Haaften having been sworn to according to the request made in this regard by skipper Van Graaff, but the others we thought best to leave unsworn, so that the path of further investigation might not thereby be cut off. Meanwhile, the command over the said ship Haaften, which still remains provided with four good mates and on which account no further changes will need to be made thereon, has provisionally remained deferred to the chief mate assigned thereto, Evert Kiekebosch, being a very capable seaman, just as there has been placed on the bearer of this the skipper of Noordwijkerhout, Jan Mijndertsz.; there having been appointed thereon as chief mate, instead of the deceased Jan Tieman, the commander of the brigantine Victoria stationed here, Pieter Arendsz. of Ameland, as well as second mate, also in the place of the deceased Dirk Janse Roof, the sailor Lourens Backer of Amsterdam, who, having already sailed twice as third mate, fully possesses the required capability for this; both, however, subject to the honored further approval of Your Noble Grand Honors, from whom they will also have to obtain the wages fixed for these offices.
