but those of the said ship, which appeared exceeding to us, From Persia, 23 September Anno 1734 ship officers one has proceeded therein in conformity with Your High Excellencies' order and according to the nature of the case to the best of our knowledge, as Your High Excellencies, if it please you, may inspect in the aforementioned resolution, wherein the corresponding sworn and unsworn written certificates (all of which accompany this in separate enclosures) are inserted; as also that in that decree it was considered and approved to have the indicated dust of pepper, collected upon receipt, amounting to 305 lb out of a delivered quantity of 224250 lb, packed to be returned unassessed thither on account of the remitters, without charging the deceased for the same; but regarding the cinnamon, of which 100 bales or 8000 lb were on board to be delivered here, and we were forced, due to visible spoilage to the said bales, to have them garbled, the said officers were charged in purchase value for a refuse of unusable scented bark in the quantity of 420 lb, and otherwise directed to keep company above the said pepper dust; but regarding a quantity of 750 lb, or 15 barrels of spoiled gunpowder out of a parcel of 120 barrels, in that matter handled just as with the said cinnamon, and after that date by Your High Excellencies' highly esteemed letter to the Cochin ministers, written on 2 October of the past year, your displeasure over Anno 1734 From Persia, 23 September: weight on the mace over a similar case having been met, one has for those reasons, and with Your High Excellencies' pleasure, thrown that spoiled gear directly into the sea, and yet let the charge remain as it had occurred; further, those officers also demonstrated that on the aforesaid voyage they had consumed for necessary ship's service 14 pieces of teak planks out of a quantity of 1000 pieces destined for this directorship, so it is on that account also resolved, according to Your High Excellencies' sent order, to place the same to their expense account; concerning the rest of the deficits relative to the warehouse goods, and likewise noted in the often-mentioned resolution of 31 December (it is most obediently brought before Your High Excellencies' eyes, how in the last closed half book-year, that is from the ultimate of February to ditto August of the past year, in the sale of 46¼ lb nutmeg dust, nutmegs, 46¼ lb dust was collected by the warehouse master, whereby the 1¾ pieces sent by the Globo appears that with a parcel already sent by the Jacoba, and consisting of 14¼ lb, in the whole year 61 lb of the said dust has been collected, as we have already most respectfully mentioned hereinbefore); in regard to the deficit, presumption on the mace found at the stocktaking, in the quantity of 249½ lb on 1722 lb, it is by presumptive deficit unanimous votes judged to await Your High Excellencies' worthy orders thereon, in the manner whereon supplication 173 From Persia, 23 September Anno 1734 ship Castor and Pollux left for Basra supplication was made in our humble letters of 19 July and 30 September of the years 1732 and 1733; in this last we had the honor also most humbly to inform Your High Excellencies that of the salempores, 262 pieces from several bales were necessitated by the washers to be cleaned, and whereof the packing notes have also been sent over; further serving in that regard how since then, out of another bale numbered 106, of which the delivered note from the respective packers we consider ourselves obliged now also to seal with the enclosures, 28 pieces of stained ones likewise had to be made deliverable by washing, and further to let the wages of all be charged to the account of merchandise expenses; accompanying this for the rest everything separately that of the Company's remaining effects was written and indicated by the general stocktaking of the provisions, gunner, ensign, etc., and found agreeable with the books, for Your High Excellencies' convenience and peace of mind. Regarding the pepper, upon arrival in the ship Castor and Pollux, the delivered pepper for Basra according to the estimate on 30 March of last year, and concerning which Your High Excellencies' our humble notice has already been offered, having been left to prevent spillage and unnecessary expenses, there on the last of September by the provisional and still appointed to that vessel skipper Jan Valentijn Visser, by verbal report was notified to the outgoing commander after a close inspection

From Persia, 23 September Anno 1734 40 bales packed, proceeding therefore further with the business, it was decided to let the good ones continue on the books here, to have the Bassoura profit and loss account of the previous year bear the refuse, and to favor our office in contra, as well as to let them accompany the goods to be sent unassessed, just as is also to happen, in accordance with the previously mentioned decree, with 65 lb nutmeg dust, because the entered quantity of 70 lb weighed 5 lb less locally upon storage, and has accumulated at the office there in a year's time to 5235 lb, of which no more has been charged to the merchant from anno 1729 until 11 May of this year than lb 4996½. Adding the aforementioned dust, according to the notification, 70 lb makes lb 5066½, as appears, and on which there was a deficit of 3¼ percent or 168½ lb, making again lb 5235. From Persia, the 23rd of September 1734 Honored missives and further writings, wherewith Their High Noble, Valiant, and Right Honorable Lordships in the fatherland and Your High Nobilities have successively honored this Directorate, were, in our meeting of the 29th of January, or the day after the arrival of the ship Elsbroek, examined for that purpose by the merchant and warehouse keeper Cornelis Engelsen, together with the under-merchant and fiscal Michael Heijnits. To that end, the secretary was at the same time instructed to make a perfect inventory of all papers in order to afford those members a proper start. This was also presented to the assembly on the 31st of March following, whereby, upon its delivery, everyone who attended this session offered a helping hand for the execution thereof. The said commissioners are also occupied with that matter and perform those honored orders to the best of their ability during healthy hours; they would undoubtedly make much more progress in that work were it not that sickness, which takes its turn with most people alike, is furthermore accompanied by the unbearable heat, which impedes the same. Nevertheless, no zeal or diligence shall fail to be applied in all respects in this matter, and we request, in order to achieve a complete result, that Your High Nobilities might be so kind as to permit our humble request that we may obtain a copy of the highly esteemed missive from the fatherland under date of 28 March 1648, which is no longer at hand here. By a recent decision, or on the 7th of May, our trade bookkeeper made a verbal request that, seeing that many books and writings were illegible and consumed by vermin, he might, in debita forma, take stock of his office to separate what was still good from what must cause unforeseen damage to the trade office. This was granted to him, and a written report of his findings was submitted by him and the specially assigned commissioners on the 5th of July. After exact resumption and by common consent, in conformity with previous practices, the fiscal was ordered to reduce to ashes the books and writings indicated in the said report which were inept, entirely illegible, and no longer usable. All of this concerning this matter is very humbly demonstrated to Your High Nobilities by the accompanying copies of those resolutions, with the most obedient plea that we may trust not to have acted improperly in not inserting that report into the resolution on account of its great size, but having annexed it in a separate copy to the enclosures of this letter. The execution by the said fiscal in this regard has also been dutifully accomplished, and his report was incorporated on the 14th of July, as just cited. In our humble last letter, we dutifully brought to Your High Nobilities' knowledge that, on account of an amount of f 752:2 for 20 cases of wine previously sent from here to the Malabar Commanderies of Cochin, we had also written in the first-mentioned time requesting them to please return to us the packing slips that had accompanied them, because that amount had in the meantime been entered into the account of suspense matters in favor of the general office (by the said missive erroneously said to be previous year's profit and loss, for which we humbly beg pardon). We now take the liberty, in terms of goodwill, to mention this again herewith, since we have been informed since that time by Cochin advices under date of 16 February of the current year, and because the true elucidation from Cochin was not obtained, that the ministers were unable to send the said slips, seeing that the cases had to remain at Tuticorin for an entire bad monsoon; and, having been received, those slips had completely perished and become illegible due to all kinds of vermin. Having fully deliberated upon this in our session of the 7th of May, we have not been able nor allowed to take any other action regarding that matter than to keep ourselves at peace regarding that subject for so long until the decision is left to Your High Nobilities' equitable judgment and gracious order, because not a single commissioner who was present at the unpacking of that wine is any longer available here. With respect to this realm, whose governance and lamentable condition, since our humble last letter, indeed showed a small ray of hope for a good change, but contrary to everyone's wish has been placed again on the same footing: Your High Nobilities were at that time informed of everything with all reverence in those humble letters. Accordingly, on the same day, to the Duke and those who departed with him, as well as to those who remained behind here after that date, their respective gifts were sent home according to the custom of the country, and were accepted with extraordinary gratitude. From Persia, 23 September Anno 1734 delivering his report in council, it was then found upon reading the same that he had conducted himself properly, but had also discovered that the British skippers were plagued with false acts contrary to their own resolution taken among themselves there and what had been personally contracted among us here, in order to share alone in the honour; yet by his conduct the same was frustrated, his actions were approved by us, and that report, Lettief's aforementioned letter, and further circumstances were incorporated into that resolution. In our humble last letter to their High Noble Right Honorable Lordships in the homeland of 6 February often mentioned, we were obliged, in execution of their highly respected order concerning a person named Pieter de Vos of Leeuwarden sent, and a memorial received here in mid-January of this year of a monthly voucher granted by him for the benefit of his surviving wife in Europe, Ietje Hotses, to show our inability, since the same was placed on 20 June 1728 as butler on the ship Samaritaan and also departed therewith thither, taking therefore with all veneration the liberty to present herewith to your High Noble Lordships that honored writing in original, just as received with respect, to the end that according to their highly wise judgment such further orders may be given as might be necessary.
