Persia, the 23rd of December 1734. Of arrested by his own sergeant on the 28th of August, and on the 14th as above sentenced to the gallows with branding and to be shackled in chains for 10 years to be employed in the public works at Batavia or elsewhere; furthermore, the confiscation of his goods in favor of the victim of the theft and to the costs and expenses of justice, executed on the 18th ditto as above. Dirk van der Linde, cadet, Frans Pietersz, sailor, Pieter Jansz de Raad, ditto, and Blaas van Bodegem, ditto, prosecuted here by the fiscal on the date as above for unseasonable and illicit gambling at night on the ship Barbestijn, sentenced—with the exception of Dirk van der Linde on the grounds of his being impotent—to be severely flogged before the mainmast, with the forfeiture of 2 months' wages by the sailor Frans Pietersz because he had acted as banker, and the other three each of 2½ months' wages, together with the forfeiture of the gambled money according to their own statements to be examined under piece No. 3 among the trial documents, being 30 rupees by the one and 10 by the other, or 40 rupees together, for the benefit of the deaconry poor at Batavia. Cornelis Rommer of Amsterdam, provisional skipper on the Barbestijn, brought to court by the fiscal for illicitly usurped authority against the magistrates of this shore, condemned to forfeit 2 months' wages, namely 2 for the deaconry poor at Batavia and two for the treasury. Persia, the 23rd of September 1734. There therefore treasury, and a request for pardon regarding that transaction of justice was carried out in the council, as above. Jabaar of Java, arrested on the 11th of this month for theft and committed violence, was thereupon sentenced on the 17th ditto to be whipped and branded, as well as to be shackled in chains for 25 years, with confiscation of his property, outstanding monthly wages, and goods found, for the indemnification of the victim of the theft, in addition to the costs and expenses of justice, the execution of which was likewise carried out on the 20th thereafter; and whereas copies of all the trial documents served concerning them have been enclosed herewith, we humbly pray, with that same council request, that we may partake of Your High Noble's highly valued approval thereof, submitting ourselves further thereto with equal reverence. We shall further acquit ourselves and humbly inform Your High Nobles that the aforementioned new authority, during the presentation to the public in a solemn manner at the handing over of the keys, was also presented with such memorial drawn up at that time as the departing authority from this directorship humbly hopes will be favorably confirmed by Your High Nobles. 297 and Of Persia, the 23rd of December 1734. and for that purpose, the copy of the same is sent herewith. To conclude this, the cargo of the 2 vessels now departing is dutifully presented for Your High Nobles' convenience, and firstly of the ship Barbestijn for the Fatherland: 44063 lb Kerman wool in 490 bales; for Batavia: 107280 copper long and round pipes, 47000 pieces of shalats, light kind, 3419½ heavy shalats, 3147 ¾ Spanish reals, 636¾ ducats by weight in smelted gold, 402 reals in silver, 100 new gold ducats by weight, 429 lion dollars, 538½ reals in old abbassis, 26 gold rupees, 100 silver dittos, 100 cases of rose water, 1000 lb sal ammoniac, 643 lb old copper, 81 pieces of native vessels of red earthenware, 1 small box wrapped in wax cloth with samples, 8740 lb mitted nuts, 479¾ lb of nuts and cloves dust, 3829 lb spoiled cinnamon, 1260 lb pepper, 393 lb pepper dust, 30 pieces of Kerman he-goats and sheep, amounting altogether to ƒ250949:17:—. By the ship Castor and Pollux for Batavia: 9500 pieces of European gold ducats by weight, 29 vessels of red earthenware; for Ceylon: 20 cases of rose water, 575 lb of medicines and drugs, 29 pieces of Kerman he-goats and sheep; for Coromandel: 12 cases of rose water, 7 lb asafoetida; for Malabar: 8 cases of rose water. The goods laden in this vessel amount to ƒ66011:7:8. The cargoes of these two ships total ƒ316961:4:8. amounting 249 Persia, the 23rd of September 1734. Of Referring ourselves finally in all obedience to all the aforementioned and unmentioned enclosures annexed hereto, humbly praying to God for an accident-free and prosperous voyage of these ships, and that His Divine Majesty may deign to bless Your High Nobles in everything with His gracious assistance, both for the welfare of the Honorable Company, the glory of Your High Nobles in particular, and for the joy of all of us together, since with unceasing devotion we shall continue in this as well as in observance of the fulfillment of our duty; remaining thus with all high esteem and deeply indebted respect, High Noble, Valiant, Great Persia, the 23rd of September 1734. From Persia under date 23 September 1734. Resolution Taken in Council of Gamron Thursday the 31st February Anno 1733 Present. The Honorable Upper Merchant and Commander Leendert de Cleen Merchant and Trade Bookkeeper Carel Koenad Honorable Ghaligbashou First George Gutchi Honorable Storekeeper Cornelis Engelsen Honorable Under Fiscal Michiel Heijnitsz Honorable Bassouras Secunde Abraham van Suchtelen Bookkeeper and Provisional Secretary Jacob Ollart The completed and delivered inventory of the ship Barbesteijn, handed over by the acting storekeepers the Honorable George Gutchi and Cornelis Engelsen to the Honorable Commander Leendert de Cleen, and produced by His Honor for reconsideration after convocation of the members in council; thus, after accurate examination concerning the condition of the goods and findings upon discharging and storage here in the warehouses and dispensaries by weight, count, measure, and gauging, it was unanimously approved and determined to make such arrangements and necessary proceedings in this regard, and that the quantity and quality of those merchandise and provisions shall be shown on each separate item by marginal notes, and also that after ripe consideration and pondering of the given reasons in that document, supported by such declarations as will be indicated by insertion hereafter in like manner, it has been judged most necessary that the interest of the Honorable Company should be as demonstrated by the following. The ship's officers declared regarding this that they could produce nothing other than that it might be that the deficit was caused during the counting at Batavia. From Persia under date 23 September 1734 has obtained, they have together been so accepted and stored in the proper place in the warehouses. Regarding the adjacent 305 lb of dust, and the underweight of 18348 lb, it was decided after weighing was performed to charge the first mentioned with a further 6072 lb, making 2½ percent, to the profit and loss account, and to keep the mentioned dust of the shipment according to custom, but for the remaining 12276 lb, being 5 percent, which constitutes a considerable underweight of roughly 7½ percent, and deemed excessive, it is decided to charge the officers salary accounts, each for one half, and that against the most recent purchase price, to be charged; and because in this matter it was considered that the present captain Cornelis Bommer, at the time of the shipment acted as chief mate and therefore received none of it on shore, bagging it, nor otherwise sending it on board, just as from such person it was received and stored, the demonstrated underweight can with good right be imputed rather to the deceased captain, together with the still present bookkeeper by name Jan Est and Hendrik Huysden, they having been present at that time; so it is therefore deemed fit to proceed herewith as already indicated. Black Bantam pepper had to be accounted for according to the invoice lb 242903. Persia, dated 23 September 1734 Regarding these missing 14 pieces: passed for the alleged reasons, resolved to charge their purchase account for them. 2 copper plates, namely 1 ditto red, and 1 ditto yellow, likewise complete up to 89 lb. 2179 iron bars, should according to the above weigh 100,000 lb. This underweight is indeed considered passable; however, considering the 9 pieces of bars delivered too short, which as assumed could be lost through negligence, it was unanimously resolved to deal with it as follows: 413 lb, being the amount of the 9 bars by calculation on the entire received parcel at Batavia, to have their purchase account charged for it, and 1546 lb to be allowed to them; 1959 lb as above. Yet here in count and reweighing only 2170 pieces and 98,041 lb were found, so that 9 bars or 1959 lb are missing from this, which amounts to 1 3/10 percent short in weight. For this, the frequently mentioned shipmates present as reasons that the iron, being stowed for some time below in a hold and under the other goods, undoubtedly caught considerable rust due to the humidity present there as well as the vapors of the mineral coal, which then, during handling to and from on board, onto and off the scale, unexpectedly flaked off, and thus reduced the quantity; not counting the probability that several bars or pieces must have been stolen by nimble thieves during loading or unloading, which with all circumspection could also not be prevented. 4 pieces of iron lock plates, weighing according to the invoice up to 83 lb. Teak planks according to invoice 1, 1 1/2 inches thick, 1000 pieces should have been delivered, and no more than 486 pieces were received here, thus short 514 pieces. Regarding the adjacent 750 lb in 15 small barrels of wet and spoiled gunpowder caused on the voyage from Batavia to this place, as appears from the incorporated declaration under Letter B, it is resolved to charge their purchase account for it, and subsequently to send the said small barrels with other cited goods to Batavia. The officers declare to have been in the highest need of these 514 pieces of small planks for ship requirements, for which they were used, as their ship's timbers were already worn down to the bottom; but for what reason the remainder, or those safely brought, are in such miserably bad condition, most barely 2 inches thick or 1/3 foot wide, split through from end to end and middle, and completely unfit for any carpentry of note, those people cannot report, except only to have received them in such condition at Batavia. 120 barrels of gunpowder, each at 50 lb, should contain together 6000 lb. Of which 105 barrels or 5250 lb of good powder was received here; further, 15 ditto or 750 lb of wet and completely spoiled; comes together as above, 6000 lb. Regarding the spoiling of this combustible material, the ship's crew exercised the foresight to arrange a declaration in good time, under date 25 August 1733, as drawn up here at the secretariat for further validation, an act in due form, and annexed hereto under Letter B; clearly meaning 15 small barrels from the parcel for this office, and the remaining five from their own or ship's powder, as they verbally claim.
