Your Honors' displeasure, expressed in the aforementioned letter of 10 June regarding our negligence in detailing the Company's state in these parts, having become evident to us, we hope, after tendering a humble request for pardon, that by our copious last letter of 25 May last (of which we are not sending a copy at present because reliable news has been received that its carrier has long since arrived safely over there) it will have been remedied, and thereby brought to light all that has come to concern the principal interests of the Honorable Company at this office during almost a full year; just as, in what follows here, we shall likewise endeavor to render the required account as accurately as possible, after first expressing, as in duty bound, our humble thanks for approving the 3 pieces of basins gifted to the English, who (as long as we reside here) are never to expect such an extraordinary favor from us again, as we shall no longer subject ourselves to any censure on their account. It was a great comfort to us to perceive that the capital of ƒ52264:17:— gained by us last year appeared very pleasant to Your Honors, but it grieved us to the soul that the same could not be dispatched along with the books, for such reasons as have previously been fully explained. The profit gained this year is indeed not so considerable, yet in a better state to please Your Honors therewith, as will be shown below in its proper place as in duty bound. It was likewise of a pleasant fragrance and comfort to us, and consequently we remain very humbly grateful for Your Honors' kind precaution through the recommendation of our persons into the favor of Lord Lettiefschan; but heaven be thanked that in the presumed case we had no need of the same, and that this duke had to retreat with his business unaccomplished, for his progress would undoubtedly have served for nothing other than a total ruin, since the fleeing Turks as well as the invading Persians would presumably, the one as little as the other, have spared us in the first fury and confusion; and therefore we wish that Thamas Chan may never again forge such designs aimed hitherward to put into execution for a second time, but that we may be left in that tranquility which we, praise be to God, have enjoyed until now since the said retreat of the Persians and the conclusion of peace with the outer Arabs; except, however, that our governor Mhemies Pasja, through his iniquitous rule, has now and then brewed some mischief, whereby he not only extorted and ruined every townsman, but moreover frightened off the merchants, both small and great, from all trade in such a manner that he had to see the grain from his mill transported to that of another, that is to say, the commerce completely transferred to Baghdad, as will be mentioned somewhat more circumstantially in what follows here. Yet for some time it has seemed as if he had filled his treasury to satisfaction and experienced a change of heart, as his rule is now somewhat more tolerable and the townsmen have thereby become in a somewhat better frame of mind. Since we closed our trade books under ultimo August last, only one set in copy, with its relevant enclosures, is presented to Your Honors in all respect under Letter A, begging your gracious indulgence on account of the haste we make with this dispatch, hoping that the same will be found without objection by Your Honors, and that the achieved net profit of ƒ30634:—8: will not be found unpleasant, in view of the bad, indeed deplorable trade year in which they were kept; the said book is also provided with its annexed return and comparison of the expenditure items of this office, in which former, by insertion below, a net advantage of ƒ13921:13:— or 37½ percent on average is demonstrated, namely: Return

Namely, that which at first glance, in comparison with previous yields, seems indeed to show a very large difference, yet essentially upon all the goods in their respective sorts, approximately the same profits have been obtained, considering that the cloves alone, thus resulting in lower charges this year of 1508½ r=m, the pound goods 116=½ s=s, and piece goods 16 1/3 per Cento r=m come to yield; wherefore necessarily, through the small sale of the spices and the charges of these two years consist as follows below: the ration monies. . . . . . . . . . aforementioned and highly respected letter must have been unusually encumbered with other and more important affairs and hindrances in the service of the Honorable Company, whereby His Honour was diverted and frustrated from his ordinary and well-known accuracy, and this the first signatory dares to propose with all the more reassurance and ground, having for the most part, and on many occasions of importance, been associated with His Honour, as well as having followed and observed step by step in the service of the Honorable Company His Honour's good examples and prudent footsteps as a predecessor in both our successive attained promotions, an affair having succeeded with good fruits: still steadily wishing that His Honour's edifying admonitions, so highly valued by him, may instill in him more and more the effect of close attention in his duties for the service of the Honorable Company. At this roadstead lies a Moorish three-masted vessel named Tawakkul, belonging directly to the renowned Turkish merchant at Surat, Achmed Tjelebi, whose Nakhuda or Captain was inclined to set sail within a month by that coast towards Surat; now comes the Pasha and desires to seize that vessel for himself, solely on a pretext that Sheikh Shabara, who claimed to have some right to the same, and presently seems to possess a fair amount of influence with the Turks, had made a written request to the said Pasha to appropriate the aforementioned vessel for his own account and rightful claim; whereto the Pasha, having let himself be persuaded, is said to have presently arrested that vessel, without one being able to truly ascertain the Pasha's intention regarding the same; yet from what we can perceive somewhat, the English consul Mr. French seems to be eyeing its ownership, either to obtain it from the Pasha or from the true owner for a small price, and to carry on his private trade with it. In case he should happen to succeed in this, we do not doubt that he will shortly employ that vessel via Gamron to Bengal, Mocha, or Surat, and that being so, or indeed that it must sail that way for the account of someone else, we shall, highly honored well-meaning friends, send our further writings with the moneys, goods, etc., in God's name to Your Honours, just as we shall also make every effort to get ready as soon as possible our humble letters accompanying Your Honours' Homeland packet for dispatch, as well as our reply to Your Honours' aforementioned esteemed letter of the 30th of September last, with whatever further concerns it, so that by doing so we may have the honor to serve our illustrious Lords Majors with the copies of our reports to Your Honours, and again Your Honours with those to Europe; from which it must follow that we shall dispatch the couriers to Aleppo and the dispatch by sea at about the same time; which is also the reason that we, with requested indulgence, shall postpone until that time the exact demonstration of our cash deficits on merchandise, yield calculation, and further due notifications, in the expectation of what has been concluded in the aforementioned terms, and adjusted to the weight of time, to see it confirmed with the approval of Their High Honours.
